Picnic connects locals NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
E
den Safety and Security Residents’ Association (ESS) in Wynberg has spread its wings beyond safety and security issues as part of their first anniversary celebrations. They brought the community of Wynberg East together by hosting a picnic for all at one of their parks on Worker’s Day, Tuesday 1 May. Hundreds of people gathered outside the comfort of their homes and mingled with residents, shared ideas and laughed together. There were treats for everyone and the
children enjoyed various games while the elders mingled over snacks and drinks or at the braai stands. This community outing in the park is said to be the first of its kind in the area. ESS secretary, Yumna Abrahams, says: “We gave the community a day to come out of their homes and enjoy the day with us. A big thank you goes out to our sponsors and for other donations received from residents who greatly contributed to the growth of ESS. Although we are doing various community upliftment programmes, we continue with our mandate of fighting crime in our area. We have a close relationship with our police,” she says. She says they have made it their mandate
to clear their community of social ills by making sure everyone is cared for, including assisting the needy with food and clothing. “We currently run a food drive every Thursday. We receive a donation of a 100-litre pot of food, but this is unfortunately not sufficient to meet the need in the area which has grown substantially over the past year. “We are trying to feed approximately 500 homeless people as some of these folk are coming on the trains from other areas like Lavender Hill and those areas and we therefore require additional donations to achieve this objective. We appeal to the public to come forward and assist if they have the means to do so.” One of the residents who enjoyed the pic-
nic, Vyonne Snyders, says she hopes this was the first of many initiatives that will bring the community together once in a while. She says it not only allowed them as adults to mingle but also created a safer entertainment space for children. Snyders says her children cannot stop talking about the fun they had at the picnic. “I hope everyone can come forward and make this the first of many. It is a muchneeded initiative in our community but we cannot expect the same people to always do it on their own. They have shown us the way – let us make it a success,” she says. V More volunteers and sponsors for the food drive are needed. Anyone wanting to assist can contact Yumna on 078 220 7241.
