A

game of rugby between two dozen children, played in the street only metres in front of a row of burning tyres, symbolises just one of the complaints of Bo-Kaap residents who protested for several days last week.

Several youth, their faces covered with scarves and cloths, added tyres to the blaze while demanding action from Council.

On Wednesday, community members handed over a memorandum to City of Cape Town representatives.

According to Bo-Kaap Civic Association chairperson, Osman Shaboodien, the memorandum addresses grievances that the community has been raising “all these years”.

“Lip service is just being paid. The City doesn’t listen to you. They just tick boxes,” he says.

The memorandum demanded that “no City land be sold to developers and that land be made available for cooperative and affordable housing to address overcrowding.”

The memorandum also calls for the implementation of a traffic plan and a MyCiTi bus route and that no tourist buses be allowed to park in the area, except in designated spaces.

Shaboodien says the community has attempted to work with the City on these issues and has over the last several years submitted proposals for traffic plans and affordable housing opportunities.

They have also been forced to pursue legal action against developments that have been approved.

Some of their “requirements”, says a resident at the protest who did not want to be named, are more facilities for the youth.

ll the turtles which have exited the Two Oceans Aquarium’s turtle rehabilitation centre would have had a 100% mortality rate had they not been brought to the aquarium­.

This sentiment, voiced by the aquarium’s curator, Maryke Musson, celebrated the work done by the aquarium in protecting turtles at a World Turtle Day event on Wednesday.

The event, held at the aquarium, invited “friends of their turtle rescue, rehab and release programme” to celebrate the success of the programme.

“All these turtles were found on our beaches … where they do not belong. Because of people, and people who really care, they ended up here. So today I want us to really

celebrate everybody who has contributed to caring for turtles and giving us the opportunity to rehabilitate them and get them back into the ocean where they belong,” Musson said at the event.

The aquarium boasts an almost 80% release rate of turtles brought to the aquarium for treatment, Musson says. Since the aquarium started tagging some of the turtles released, Musson said, they have been able “to validate their work”.

“We put healthy turtles back into the ocean and what a reward it is to see them swimming up past Angola or, with (recently released hawksbill turtle) Otto, swimming past Madagascar. It’s fantastic,” she said.

This year, the programme launched their turtle rescue network. The network includes 10 points across the coastline, such as Shark Spotters in Muizenberg, at which organisations act as contact points for residents who find stranded turtles, Noble explained.

But the most important guests were not forgotten – a special cake was made for the aquarium’s turtles, Moya, Bob and Sandy.

All are green turtles and the cake was made to suit their mostly vegetarian diet, boasting layers of cabbage, peas, carrot, cucumber, seaweed, peppers and white mussels – bound together with gelatine and nutrient gel.

Themed cupcakes were provided for those attending the event.

Turtles were the theme of the day, with temporary tattoos embraced by those attending the event.

New home for pig’s paintings Nestled among the public art at St Andrew’s Square is the work of an artist of a different calibre.

The Oink Gallery – the official travelling gallery of the world’s first ever painting pig, more fondly known as Pigcasso – is open at the square and the paintings, all created by the pig, are for sale, with the proceeds going to the Farm Sanctuary of South Africa.

St Andrew’s Square is managed by the Green Point City Improvement District (GPCID), and CEO Marc Truss facilitated the new addition to the area.

Joanne Lefson, the woman behind the discovery of Pigcasso’s unusual talent, saw that when paintbrushes were put in the pig’s pen, she chose to delicately handle them while duly eating nearly everything else.

After being provided with paint and a canvas, this piggy proved to be unstoppable, even signing each painting with her trademark snout. It’s pretty remarkable when you consider that she was rescued from a slaughterhouse where her only purpose would have been to end up as a pork chop. Now she impacts many other animals by providing resources at the Farm Sanc-

tuary, Lefson’s other great love.

Quiz to boost VWS

A

working group has been suggested as a means to gather differing opinions over local lanes.

Following an earlier public meeting, ward councillor Dave Bryant suggested the working group.

“The meeting gave those present an opportunity to ventilate concerns and ideas around the management of the Green Point lanes.

There were a variety of opinions on the matter and disagreement on certain aspects, but there was a general consensus that more needs to be done to improve the overall safety of the lanes, along with more regular cleaning and maintenance,” Bryant says.

“It is clear that there are very different approaches as to how best to address the matter and it was my recommendation at the conclusion of the meeting that a group of people representing different opinions come forward to see if a more cooperative approach could be pursued.”

Bryant has made funding, from the ward allocation budget, available to clean up Green Point’s lanes, following concerns raised by the community (“Funds sweep clean”, People’s Post, 3 April).

“The cleanliness of the lanes has proved to be an ongoing challenge, as public lanes are only cleaned

three times a year in line with cleaning frequencies for residential streets. This project will commence from July,” Bryant previously told People’s Post.

Liz Knight, Green Point Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association vice-chairperson and founder of Friends of Green Point Lanes, says a group of volunteer residents have been maintaining the lanes.

The residents have been upgrading the lanes by first clearing building rubble and weeds and then planting drought-resistant plants.

Residents living alongside the lanes have been encouraged to also maintain them and use them for exercising and dog walking.

“The objective of the Friends group has been to make the lanes safer for pedestrians than the main roads where pavements in many instances have been appropriated for parking,” she explains.

One of the biggest complaints around the public lanes is litter (including plastic, glass, polystyrene and paper) that is dumped in the lanes, Knight says.

“Some four lanes have already been planted and the Friends have just under 100 signed petitions supporting open lanes from residents who live near or work alongside.

Residents have also given financial support to assist with employment to clean and garden the lanes.”

VWS has been combating dangerous and sometimes deadly runaway fires for almost 18 years.

Bryant says: “It is hoped that the group will be able to look at how best to improve the overall safety of the lanes and investigate different options as to how best this can be achieved.”

Knight adds that the working group will look to find a “common group among the disparate views”.

“As far as we are aware, the only volunteers who have come forward unanimously support the City’s spatial planning policy of keeping the entrance to the lanes free from obstruction in any shape or form.

Those lobbying to close the lanes did not communicate a willingness to be part of this working group at the end of the meeting nor since. The group will therefore continue to further their objectives to increase use of the lanes and ensure that they are clean and safe.”

FROM PAGE 1 He also lambasted high rates, saying the area’s rates are on par with suburbs such as Camps Bay. The memorandum demanded the “new tariffs (electricity, and water) ... be scrapped, reviewed and made affordable and that no new water meter be installed as punitive measures”.

The memorandum also demanded that the Heritage Protection Overlay Zone (HPOZ) be signed into effect immediately.

The Bo-Kaap HPOZ came under consideration when then ward councillor Dave Bryant submitted a motion in 2013 to have the suburb named an urban conservation area.

The HPOZ would place limitations on development in the suburb, one of the oldest communities in Cape Town, to protect the heritage and traditional homes in the suburb­. The delay has now been attributed to a legal dispute between the Bo-Kaap Civic Association, the City and the developer of a proposed high-rise building (“City is ‘delaying’ heritage zone”, People’s Post, 19 August 2017).

All landowners are entitled to exercise their development rights subject to the same regulated processes to get approval, explains Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development. “I want to state from the outset that there is a lot

of misinformation about the heritage protection status of the Bo-Kaap, and the so called ‘developments’ in the area in general. The City is not prioritising development in the Bo-Kaap over protection of heritage assets.”

All development applications are submitted to our Development Management offices across the City on a daily basis. These applications are being dealt with in accordance with the Municipal Planning By-law and are subject to the applicable statutory processes – inclusive of those that fall within the BoKaap, Herron adds. “Every development application needs to comply with the range of checks and balances that are in place to ensure that appropriate development takes place in the appropriate location.”

Several protection mechanisms are in place to ensure the protection of heritage homes within the Bo-Kaap, Herron says, including a Grade 1 (national significance) rating, and portions of the area are included in a Heritage Protection Overlay Zone.

“In fact, the Western Cape High Court is currently dealing with a review application concerning the decision to permit a development on Buitengracht. Some Bo-Kaap residents are seeking to review and set aside the planning approval. The residents base part of their case on the heritage status of the ar-

ea. In other words, no development can take place in an area that has heritage protection without the approval of the heritage authority – Heritage Western Cape.”

The City offers support in terms of rates and tariff rebates to indigent homeowners to ensure that residents can afford to stay in their homes, Herron says.

“The provision of a MyCiTi feeder service in the Bo-Kaap poses a number of challenges – the most difficult being the fact that the streets in the Bo-Kaap are very narrow and that the nine-metre low-floor buses cannot be accommodated on these roads, nor is there space to turn around.”

The memorandum called for upgrades and sporting facilities to be provided by the City, as well as the creation of partnerships with the community through civic organisations­.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services, says afterschool programmes such as karate classes take place at Schotschekloof Hall, as well as an Early Childhood Development Centre. “A satellite clinic is available for mothers and their children to receive primary healthcare and on Wednesdays a dispensary operates from the facility for the treatment of tuberculosis patients.”

T

he V&A Waterfront desalination plant is expected to come online in the next few weeks.

This was stated by subcouncil 16 chairperson, Matthew Kempthorne, at a recent ratepayers’ meeting.

The waterfront desalination plant was originally expected to start producing water in March.

The City of Cape Town then stated the plant would be ready in April or May, but it was delayed due to “water quality issues”, Kempthorne says.

This was confirmed by staff at the City’s media office, who said “there were slight delays to ensure that the water quality is within the SANS prescripts. This is a normal process though and it has been completed.”

On Monday last week, deputy mayor Ian Neilson visited the temporary desalination plant in Strandfontein, which is now delivering high-quality, treated desalinated water into the supply system.

The Strandfontein plant was initially expected to supply its first water in March, with the full completion in May. The City’s third temporary desalination plant at Monwabisi was expected to reach full production in May. This plant is injecting almost five million litres per day into the reticulation system and the water is being delivered to customers. It is foreseen that full production of seven million litres will come online during June, he says.

“Our reverse osmosis desalination plant in the Waterfront area is close to producing two million litres of drinking water per day, while progress on the desalination plant at Monwabisi is also progressing well, with first water expected to be delivered by June and full production to be reached by July, if all goes according to plan.

“This plant is also set to produce seven million litres per day.These projects provide only a small contribution of our daily water requirement as a city,” Neilson says.

“The desalination projects, in conjunction with our groundwater and water reuse programmes, are part of our efforts to make our city more resilient to future drought shocks and to ensure that we thrive despite climatic uncertainty,” he says.

Social spaces ‘on the rise’ NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

he food industry in the Central City is booming, and the rise has been linked to the need for a social haven for those living a downtown lifestyle.

The Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) recently released their State of the Cape Town Central City Report: A Year in Review – 2017, which noted the increase in “third spaces” in the CBD area.

As the move towards a “downtown” lifestyle has continued to grow, residents are moving away from the bigger homes found in suburbia. This has seen the rise of a need for public-friendly spaces where people can interact, referred to as “third spaces”, the report states.

These spaces allow people to interact with their surroundings and are increasingly being used in the retail industry to bring together the sale of goods and services with social engagement.

Following on this trend, it is envisioned that anchor tenants will no longer be large chain stores, but rather spaces where people can meet and be entertained, such as gyms, restaurants, markets, galleries, theatres and the like, the report states.

“Third space is that all-important space between work and home, where you ‘relax’,” explains author of the report and CCID spokesperson, Carola Koblitz.

“People who live in suburbs can get this from their own gardens, or

have homes large enough in which they can entertain for instance, or they have urban parks in their neighbourhood, but in a densifying downtown, where apartments are smaller and gardens pretty much non-existent, you need to seek this ‘third space’ from other venues and thus the quality of those venues and accessibility to them speaks enormously to the quality of life you live in a downtown. Indeed, the whole attraction about living downtown is that, while you have to sacrifice both personal indoor and outdoor space, you live in close proximity to options that will provide you with alternatives.”

Cafes and restaurants are the Central City’s primary third space, the report finds, and the number of

them is increasing.

In 2014, 64% of residents who took part in the CCID’s Central City residential survey said they eat out on a weekly basis. In the latest report, this had increased to 73% of respondents. In addition, 82% of respondents in the survey said they visited coffee shops at least once a week.

Bars, clubs, eateries and takeaways make up the bulk of the retail offerings in the Central City, the report found.

Koblitz adds: “In 2016, we had a total number of 209 eateries and in 2017 this had risen to 225. While this is not an enormous increase, it is the first year that we have actually seen an increase. If you break this down further, you no-

tice that we have had an increase in the number of takeaway establishments (from 44 in 2016 to 61 in 2017), as well as a significant rise in coffee shops (from 34 in 2016 to 50 in 2017). What we believe this demonstrates is that the range of food options is definitely changing, and the variety of what’s available is greater.”

But it’s not just the food industry embracing the idea of a third space, says Koblitz, with a number of retail options starting to diversify to include this.

“It is definitely a trend that is starting to catch on and it depends on retailers creating customer experiences – often multiple experiences in one venue – rather than just carrying stock. Other exam-

ples include a restaurant that is also a tattoo parlour, wine merchants that also sell meals, laundries where you can eat dim sum, drink great wine or coffee and even purchase art, barbers that are also bars, bicycle rental and purchase outlets that are also coffee/wine shops, bars that also sell clothes and service motorcycles, art galleries that also serve meals and hold evening dance classes, and a bookstore that regularly holds launches and does story readings for children on a Saturday morning. These are destinations designed specifically to make you linger longer and enjoy a variety of offerings over and above you just spending a few minutes inside them to make a quick purchase.”

You should get what you pay for The City gets praised for spending public money on cycle routes so that private interests like hotels, bed and breakfasts and restaurants can benefit financially. In the meantime the taxpayers have to pay more for all our services because the City doesn’t have enough money.

This is an outrage.

The tourist industry should be funded by the people who benefit from it, not the taxpayer.

What we get from it is increased congestion and higher prices, based on what overseas people are willing to pay.

The same thing applies to the electricity outage in Hangberg.

Do these residents actually pay for anything? Or do they just expect the taxpayers who are already overburdened to pay for this as well?

Remember The Lux So my teenage son asks my older daughter recently: “Do you remember when going to the movies was R20?”

What? I remember going to the movies costing eight cents.

Every Saturday, two movies, “shorts” of the next releases, an episode of “Johnny Robot” or other series, and adverts – eight cents! Imagine that.

That ticket would allow you a seat downstairs, not against the back wall or upstairs, as that was 12 and 25 cents.

But after the lights went out: action. No, nothing of that sort.

We were kids. I’m talking about getting a seat upstairs where the older and more fortunate were

seated. Whether they saw any bit of the movies, I don’t know.

But the back wall with its double letter designation was the place to be if you were older and daring!

Then sneaking in the dark hoping that the usher, Hannes, would not be onto you and “politely” ask you to vacate the upstairs seat which you did not pay for.

But where are we? The Luxurama – The Lux as it was affectionately known. Only 50m from my house, my home away from home. And home to so many others.

The lights would dim, the curtains would reveal the

biggest screen in the south. I was amazed at the ads. American voices, motor racing clips, people playing golf. Yes, this was “After action, satisfaction.

Lexington, alive with flavour.”

But my best memory was on the way home, acting out what we just saw.

Everyone wanted to be the “outjie” or “roeker” – the main dude.

We were drawing imaginary guns out of imaginary holsters faster than Clint Eastwood or Terence Hill. Our Kung Fu moves were on a par with Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris.

Cowboys and Indians? Nothing political here. No motions of no confidence. Just pure, childhood fun.

n a cosy little shop, underneath a balcony, sits a world-class chocolate factory that could give Willie a run for his money.

With a small team of chocolatiers hard at work processing 8000kg worth of cocoa beans every month, the team at CocoaFair creates memories in each bar.

“Chocolate is emotional and we should not feel guilty about it. It really has an effect on you physically and mentally, especially when you find the right one that brings back that nostalgia,” says chocolatier Zonja Penzhom­.

As one of the very few chocolate makers around, CocoaFair has a unique tasting experience to help each person find their sweet spot – 100% chocolate – and it is like nothing you have ever tasted before.

“We are chocolate makers because we actually make the chocolate ourselves. We roast the beans and from that you get cocoa mass and cocoa butter and that is what the chocolate is made from,” she says.

Everything from cleaning the beans to flavouring and packaging the final chocolates, is done on site with the store shipping internationally as well, ringing true to their slogan “from bean to bar”.

“We do clean labelling because people want to see what is in the products. We don’t use anything artificial. It is cocoa mass, cocoa butter and sugar. That is all that is in the chocolate,” says Penzhom.

This is of course besides their flavour-infused range of white, milk and dark chocolates as these include extracts from a variety of spices, herbs, fruits and roots.

Creating an extensive range of flavours and products to choose from, CocoaFair definitely has chocolate for every pallet.

From a refreshing but more conventional mint known as “peppermint crisp on steroids”, to a coffee, chilli or ginger infused chocolate, or for the more adventurous, a liquorice, lemongrass and cilantro or passion fruit and pepper combination.

And with continuous experimentation, these gourmet, hand-crafted treats will continue to please.

“We try to explore with South African flavours and flavours that are unique but that people may not have been used to before.

Our main thing when doing these flavours is that we want people to taste the chocolate first and then the flavour, because you are buying the chocolate,” says Penzhom.

“We make what our tastebuds want. We are constantly exploring and creating new products­.”

F

or critically acclaimed novelist and poet, Patricia Schonstein, poetry is “like a door into a magical garden”.

She’ll be unlocking this door during a session at the Jewish Literary Festival (JLF) on Sunday 17 June. Schonstein will be sharing the mic with Elisa Galgut, Elisa Kentridge, Justine Joseph and Stuart Kantor.

“We’ll have readings and questions. I am interested in the source of a poem, its inspiration, the ‘well’ that nourishes it. We’ll explore these,” she says.

African at heart For Schonstein, Africa itself is the inspiration behind much of her work. “[My love for poetry started] when I was at school. The curriculum in those long-ago days was rich in literature. We studied Shakespeare and all the great English poets.

In Latin we read the poems of Ovid. This gave me a strong foundation. I was fortunate.

The modern curriculum seems much reduced, by comparison,” she says.

“Over the years I kept copies of poems that made an impression on me.

At a certain point I realised they would make a wonderful anthology. So I compiled Africa! My Africa! which became the first in the Africa! series.”

Schonstein’s fourth work in her Africa! series, Absolute Africa! An Anthology of Poems, is expected to be released by Patricia Schonstein.

“It is rich and beautiful. It contains some 300 poems. The range of voices is broad and generous,” she says.

“I like to think of poetry as a ‘gateway’ into literature, both the writing and reading of it. It’s like a door into a magical garden.

African languages are by their nature poetic. Xhosa, for instance, is onomatopoeia and always defers toward harmonious sound and tone. So one could say that Africa itself is naturally poetic. Although the anthologies are in English, the poems are all ‘touched by Africa’. I like to think that through them, I’m giving something of Africa to the world. And I hope to inspire emerging poets.”

Schonstein is also the curator of the Poetry in McGregor anthologies and co-editor of the poetry quarterly, Stanzas. She has written several novels and children’s books. Her works have been translated into seven languages and endorsed by the Nobel Laureates JM Coetzee and Archbishop Emeritus

Desmond Tutu.

She began her work in children’s literature looking to create stories with more African characters, which would resonate with local children at a non-racial preschool which she ran in Grahamstown during apartheid, in the 1980s.

“I wanted to expose my pupils to stories set in Africa with African characters. But most of the books in the public library were Eurocentric. So I began writing poems and songs and stories for the children. Eventually these were published,” she explains.

Wordsmiths The JLF offers face-to-face interaction with more than 100 wordsmiths over a day full to the brim with fascinating events.

With the aim of promoting constructive dialogue and discussion in the true spirit of Jewish life without promoting any single political or religious agenda, this is a day on which to immerse yourself in words. Authors, poets, illustrators, journalists, writers and educators who have a Jewish connection or are engaged with subjects of Jewish interest have come together to present a wide-ranging programme of more than 60 events which explore a variety of genres.

Schonstein will be involved in another session at the JLF which will talk about the Holocaust and she will explain how she has dealt with the Holocaust’s effects on her own family by “healing” through her novels, and looking at the Jewish characters who populate them.

“Five of my novels hold, at core, questions of the Holocaust and the Inquisition. They address the repeating narrative of intolerance and persecution. These are variously experienced by my fictitious characters.

My own questions about the recurrence of war and genocide are debated by them. This is not to say my novels are dark or depressing. On the contrary, they are sensual and beautiful and magical. They resolve with hope,” she explains.

“My family’s experience of the Holocaust has profoundly influenced my life. I think it has shaped a great deal of my attitude. It has certainly caused me to seek meaning.

Without doubt, it has contributed both scaffolding and depth to my novels.”

Africa Day celebrations excite THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

he Artscape came alive on Friday 25 May as about 100 people attended the entertainment hub to celebrate Africa Day. Representatives from the provincial government and African dignitaries also attended, to commemorate the day.

The provincial MEC of cultural affairs and sport, Anroux Marais, said that Africans are the only people capable of telling African stories to the world.

“Africa oozes with natural beauty, diversity, excellence and a multitude of culture.

[As Africans] we all have a part to play in sharing the African story so that the world at large is aware of the realities of our continent,” she said.

“We need to make them aware of our achievements, successes, food, languages and cultures, because who better to tell our stories than us?”

She said Africans need to take pride in telling the rest of the world that this continent is home to 33 Nobel Prize recipients, has over 2000 languages, and the concept of Ubuntu comes from this continent.

Marais paid tribute to world record-breaking sports stars like Caster Semenya, Chad le Clos and Wayde van Niekerk for their contribution in putting Africa on the map.

Zimbabwe’s consular general in South Africa, Boniface Mugobogobo, said 25 May will forever be special to people across the continent­.

“It is a day when we pause to celebrate our rich heritage, diverse cultures and backgrounds, our noble aspirations and ideals, and to reflect on how far we have come,” he said.

“It also makes us aware of how far we still

have to go to advance the principles of democracy and governance. It is a day when we commemorate the founding of the African Union in 1963 in Addis Ababa.”

Many attendees stuck to the theme of the day by dressing in their traditional regalia and indulging in African cuisine.

Former Orlando Pirates player Mark Fish says they’re looking for the next Bafana Bafana star. “We need to develop players mentally, physically and emotionally to become footballers and also so that they can understand what it means to be a footballer,” he says. Fish says the one-year contract with Orlando Pirates is a wonderful opportunity for any young aspiring footballer. Fish says it’s fantastic to play football in South Africa, but why not aspire to play abroad? “As a footballer you never stop learning, and exposing yourself to international football can only be good for the development of South African football,” he says.

Once the three players return, one deserving player will receive a one-year contract with the Orlando Pirates FC development team to continue a career in football.

Former Bafana Bafana defender Siphiwe Mkhonza, along with Dumisani Thusi and Orlando Pirates coaches, will scout for talented young players during the campaign.

“Shield South Africa is invested in the development of local football talent and through the Shield Sbonis’ iDiski campaign, we wish to demonstrate our support to those who know that winning comes with hard work and dedication,” says Gareth Marshall, Shield brand manager at Unilever South Africa.

“This opportunity will motivate players, but even if they fail they should continue,” says head coach Mkhonza. He says the coaches don’t specifically look at positions, but rather for players with game insight, precision and understanding of the evolving game, he says.

MTB series to start T

he first of four Western Cape Spur Schools Mountain Bike (MTB) League events kicks off in Somerset West on Saturday 9 June at 08:00.

Young MTB enthusiasts are encouraged to saddle up and come out in full force to represent their schools this season. Currently SACS, Wynberg Boys, Sun Valley Primary School, Camps Bay Primary School, Kirstenhof Primary School, Bergsig Primary School, as well as Western Province Prep have all entered to take part in this year’s mountain bike league event.

The MTB League was launched by Spur Steak Ranches and Amarider in 2009 and aims to provide a level of regional and national structure for the sport at school level, thus encouraging schools to adopt MTB as an official in-school sport.

As the second biggest region in the league, the Western Cape is expected to see yet another healthy spike in participation numbers this year.

The Spur Schools MTB League is the country’s largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport.

The league has developed exponentially

and to date attracts close to 13 000 entries from 500 schools annually.

This statistic is expected to see another dramatic increase this year as more schools look to be included in what is one of the largest school MTB programmes in the world.

In order to grow a stable base in South Africa for a fast-growing, international competitive sport, the league seeks to introduce more learners to MTB and encourages South African schools to adopt mountain biking as an official school sport.

And while mainly focused at high school level, the league does allow for primary

school participation in selected regions to help grow a feeder system for the league.

Through Amarider’s facilitation, a sustainable sporting model has been established and continues to work at paving the way forward for school versus school competition.

The Spur Schools MTB League has managed to build a strong cross-country racing format, with events taking place in each province between May and September­.
