Headscarves to spread love Shaqeel Dareis and Shinaaz Adjiet hope to collect 1000 scarves to be distributed to less fortunate girls ahead of Ramadaan. The pair are running a scarf and sanitary drive and hope to distribute items donated to mosques in Khayelitsha, Philippi, Montrose Park and Heinz Park. Adjiet started the drive in 2014 and continued this year and hopes to double her intake and add new collection drives in the future. Read more on page 3.

PERFECTLY POSH HIGH TEA

The secret to staying in style NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain tyle never goes out of fashion – a mantra that stylist, image consultant and fashion PR guru Cathy Steed has been living for over three decades.

Steed’s first step into the fashion industry was when she was scouted as a model at age 15 and introduced to Elite Model Management. She spent almost a decade modelling before opening her own modelling agency, Steeds Model Management, at 24.

“All my steps in the fashion industry have led me to the next step,” she says.

After the better part of 10 years as a “model boss”, Steed took the next step of her career into marketing and magazines.

She was appointed as director of fashion at Glamour magazine, a post she held for another decade.

“I guess my proper entry into the fashion industry was when I was appointed director of fashion at Glamour, [where I was] able to create and shoot and be in the very privileged position to hopefully inspire and uplift women of all ages,” she says.

One of the highlights of her media career would be flying to Vogue House to be interviewed for the position at Glamour.

“And then having the honour of being asked to come back and cover the fashion department 10 years later. Such a privilege!”

But this was not the last step in Steed’s journey through the fashion industry.

She was approached to enter the marketing industry and leapt at the opportunity.

“I am a sole parent and sadly magazines don’t pay very well. I was headhunted as marketing manager for Green Cross shoes.

An exhibition that is entirely curated by sex workers, about sex workers, is currently on display at Iziko Slave Lodge.

Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) in collaboration with Iziko Museums of South Africa Slave Lodge brings a multidisciplinary collection of photography, video and writing. This will be done through a one-of-a-kind exhibition curated by the Sex Worker Feminist Collective titled I Am What I Am: Places, Faces & Spaces.

The exhibition has been three years in the making by the Sex Worker Feminist Collective. The collective was formed by sex workers at Sweat out of a desire to speak out against South African feminist movements that continue to exclude sex workers and make them invisible. The exhibition comprises the work of nine members of the collective.

The project is a collaboration between photographer Irene-Grobbler-Lenoble and writer Amy Kaye. The participants learned how to document their own realities and write their own stories.

Participants were given cameras to go into their communities and document their lives, as they saw fit, in the intimacy of their everyday lives.

“What you will see at Iziko Slave Lodge is an exhibition that is entirely curated by sex workers about sex workers, through the photographs they have taken, through the captions they have written and through the thoughts they have penned.

The I Am What I Am: Places, Faces and Spaces exhibition will run concurrently with the Enough is Enough and Still Figuring Out What It Is To Be Man exhibitions at the Slave Lodge and will be open to the public until 31 August.

sexy and to change the perception of the brand. “ I had to find a way of working with fashion brands I love and growing them in the marketplace and still be able to bring up my two extraordinary girls alone,” she says.

The move to marketing was not just a salary bump, with Steed finding she relished the challenge of transforming a brand’s image. “[My favourite campaign would have to be Green Cross and] the challenge of taking a brand that was perceived to be an ‘orthopaedic’ and ‘ugly’ shoe brand and making it sexy by reshooting the campaign,” she says.

“I also love last year’s Burberry campaign, which they shot with models wearing absolutely no makeup.

“It’s authentic and real and doesn’t pretend to be anything else.”

Steed chooses to work on campaigns that inspire her passion.

“It’s a great honour to be entrusted with such great brands. Quality is always better than quality and I never drop my standards.

I could never look after a brand I don’t love.

I am far too passionate about what I do.”

Steed will be sharing her passion for all things fashion at the Perfectly Posh High Tea Party taking place at the Kelvin Grove Club in Newlands on Thursday 19 April at 10:00.

She will be sharing tips on fashion trends and how to dress well without being “a slave to fashion trends and having to spend a fortune to update your wardrobe”.

And after her years in the fashion industry, Steed has learnt that there are only a few secrets to staying on trend and in style.

“Have an open mind to everything. Never be afraid and never for a second think might you be getting old,” she says.

“The only two rules in fashion should be ‘dress your shape’ and ‘dress your age’.”

An Athlone school was the beneficiary of five bicycles and apparel from Active Bodies Sports Development last week.

ctive Bodies Sports Development, a nonprofit organisation in Cape Town, donated five bicycles and cycling apparel to Alexander Sinton High School in Athlone last week.

Abbass Harris, chairperson of the group, says the handover forms part of their vision to give back to the community and was done with the aims to introduce the sport of cycling to learners at the local school.

The team’s intention is to introduce and develop 20 youth in cycling and take them to the Cape Town Cycle Tour next year.

Harris says the organisation will build on the first donation and hopefully get it up to

20 bicycles in the coming months.

“The cycling club was established in 2011 and is dedicated to promoting cycling. We are highly focused on supporting the development and nurturing of young and aspiring cyclists from disadvantaged backgrounds and have handed over several bicycles to schools thus far.

“The club also took over 40 kids to the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2018 and entered an invitational road cycling team, made up of some of the best riders in the country, to cycle for the cause of ‘dreaming big and doing what you dream’ in the Coronation Double Century 2017 race in Swellendam in which 275 teams participated, where the team not only won the race, but broke the previous record.”

Hijab for happiness ahead of Ramadaan SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121 Two locals have joined forces to bring happiness to at least 1000 girls ahead of Ramadaan.

Shinaaz Adjiet started a scarf drive ahead of her pilgrimage to Hajj in 2014.

“We have so many scarves that we don’t use and I encouraged my daughters to also donate their scarves. I used social media to spread the word on the drive and I accumulated more than 400 scarves. I did not realise it would be so many,” she says.

“I did not continue until this year. I realised that it is almost Ramadaan and I decided to do it again.

“We put the call out on social media again for pre-loved scarves and we have already received 650 scarves,” she says.

Adjiet and Shaqeel Dareis decided to combine the scarf drive with Dareis’ sani-

tary drive that seeks to collect sanitary towels, treats, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and other toiletry items for girls that will also be distributed.

Reaching other communities Adjiet has already approached several mosques and hopes to distribute the scarves to women and girls in Heinz Park, Philippi, Khayelitsha and Montrose Park.

“This is priceless for me because everything we do, we do for the sake of Allah.

People not only brought scarves, they also wanted to know what else they could donate. There are things that still have prices on. I was stunned,” she says.

But with the success, Adjiet says they have set themselves a new goal.

“We want to collect 1000 scarves before Ramadaan,” she says.

The pair were so inspired that they plan to register an organisation called Precious

Gems to continue the drive and expand to a winter drive and other initiatives.

“Precious Gems was selected because I do life coaching and it stood out to me. Our motto is ‘Hope, Light and Love’.

“This project brings hope and I hope it brings light and love as well,” she says.

They thanked the residents for assisting in donations for the drive as the support has been overwhelming and unexpected­.

One of their biggest donors thus far was the Medina Institute in Beacon Valley­.

“They donated scarves, sleeves and so much more,” says Adjiet.

Adjiet says her love for giving stems from her family.

The Adjiet’s own a string of businesses at the Colorado Park City Centre, called the Amazing Group Holdings.

“The whole family gets excited about the drive and donate of their own clothing and scarves,” she says.

“I believe we need to help. If we all help our neighbours, who will need help?”

They are not looking for recognition, but rather to give back to the community who have supported them.

“It is not just about running a business, we are giving back as well to others,” Dareis says.

The pair have also collected clothing that will be distributed along with the scarves.

Adjiet says they have several friends and family who have offered their shops and premises as drop-off sites and will gladly also arrange pick-ups for the scarves.

Scarves can also be dropped off at Amazing Parties at the Colorado Park City Centre.

They will run the drive up to a week before Ramadaan.

I watched my first video on disaster relief aid that was distributed by IR on the ground in other countries, and it sparked the intention in me that one day I too could travel to those countries and physically assist in delivering the aid to people, and to stay there for a while to help rebuild their homes, and in essence, their lives. We can still go back home to our lives and families, but those people do not have that luxury.

“Charity work grows you as a person, to be placed in all kinds of challenging situations so you are conscious of your strengths and weaknesses, and how to handle that accordingly. It allows you to be exposed to people that have different backgrounds, and you learn how to coexist regardless of differences. Spiritually, God makes certain facets of your life easier for you, since you have made life easier for others. You are just filled with this immense sense of contentment and happiness, knowing that God has chosen you to be a means in which He assists the rest of His creation,” she says.

“God blessed me to meet pure and compassionate souls that have the best of intentions and this allowed me to be exposed to different charity initiatives, both locally and internationally. The abundance of blessings one receives through charity, from God spiritually, mentally and physically cannot be limited to words, it can only truly be experienced firsthand,” adds Holland­.

Human rights workshop for disabled AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem

T

he Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled in Bridgetown treated several clients to an informative human rights workshop and lunch on Thursday.

Members of the organisation say that despite hosting the annual event late this year, their team still felt the need to create a platform for the disabled individuals to know their rights.

The organisation, which provides social development services to enhance the quality of life for persons with locomotor disabilities, hosted more than 50 clients on the day, in the presence of various guest speakers, including members of the Department of Labour.

Ferosa van Rooi, a social worker and community development practitioner at the centre, says the event was of great importance to the clients, many of whom hail from the underprivileged communities of Manenberg, Hanover Park, Mitchell’s Plain, Philippi and surrounding areas.

“Human Rights Day for these disabled clients is nearly every day. Although we hosted the event late this year, it was more of us creating awareness and giving them access to information. One of the guest speakers was from the Department of Labour. For a person with disabilities to get to their offices is very difficult, especially when putting themselves on a database to know what services are provided for them,” she explains.

More than 50 disabled clients were treated on the day.

“We decided to bring the department here instead, as it is their right to have access to that information despite their conditions.

We also had other guest speakers with disabilities who shared their journey with us, and how they used their human rights, leading to where they are today. This was the purpose of the event and to mainly celebrate their human rights as disabled people.”

In addition to clients sitting in on an informative workshop on the day, they also enjoyed a programme filled with exciting entertainment and delicious foods. Wilfred Diedricks, spokesperson for the Cape Town APD, says despite welcoming clients from all over the City, financing the organisation and skills workshops remains an issue.

“We provide several workshops to these clients on a current database of 800 clients, to help them uplift and empower themselves. We have seen many clients leave successfully, with outstanding skills.

But financing these workshops and the building is one of the major challenges for the organisation at the moment,” he says.

“This is our own building and we have large grounds, but it is more of a burden when we don’t have finances to sustain it. We herewith have to do fundraisers every now and then, despite getting an amount from the Department of Social Development. But it is never enough, especially with a support staff and 18 qualified workers that need to be paid.

“To add, we no longer house patients at the centre but we would

like to get a project running as we need housing for our very vulnerable clients. Our dream is to develop this huge land and build a hospital on these grounds to accommodate them. It will take a lot of work, but I am engaging with people already in order to get there.

“We provide these services free of charge to our clients and there is much that is still needed for them, especially with their disability. To add, transport is a major issue when it comes to getting the clients to the centre or our workers dodging bullets in their community, to get to them. We are always in need of assistance from the community and their help to grow these clients and organisation will be appreciated.”

RED CROSS CHILDRENS HOSPITAL

F

rom a simple sock, a symbol of gratitude is being spread around the world by a Sea Point family.

Jed Kagan (10) and his mother Shana have started a non-profit organisation called Jedi Tedi, which creates teddy bears out of socks to raise funds for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

The funds raised by Jedi Tedi are channelled to the Red Cross Pain Clinic – a facility which became home to the Kagan family after Jed contracted a rare disease.

In September 2016 Jed experienced severe pain in his knee after playing with his older brother, Liam. The cause of the pain left many specialists stumped.

“Jed returned home from school to play cricket with his older brother. After coming in to rest he revealed he had severe pain in his knee and struggled to get up. Not thinking much of it, we carried him to the bath, thinking warm water would help. Jed screamed blue murder and there was nothing we could do about it,” recalls Shana.

By the next day, Jed’s pain had elevated and he was rushed to hospital. An X-ray and several blood tests revealed nothing out of the ordinary and Jed was sent home with anti-inflammatory medication.

His pain continued for days, prompting the family’s doctor to run a blood test to look for the strep virus.

“The virus settled in his knee making him unable to walk with-

out crutches. Jed’s pain appeared to be escalating despite being prescribed with a lot of medication.

After two weeks the medication showed no results,” says Shana.

The family was eventually referred to a paediatric specialist with years of experience treating children suffering rare illnesses – and Jed was then diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

CRPS is a disease brought about by a previous injury or illness, which causes extreme pain in a region. The pain results from a series of incorrect nerve signals sent from the affected joint to the brain.

“We didn’t know what was wrong, and when we did, we didn’t know what to do about it.”

The family eventually found themselves at the Red Cross Hospital, where Jed finally found treatment: The hospital’s anaesthesiology department had previously dealt with children with this disease and to date is one of the only institutions in the world equipped to help those suffering from the condition. The Red Cross team – Angeline Schrikker and Rukaiya Mowzer in particular – formed a special bond with Jed and always kept him in positive spirits.

“We felt so accepted. It is a difficult disease to explain and to comprehend. Here they had seen it all before and they were encouraging and nurturing, caring and empathetic to Jed and to all of us. We so needed to be understood, as it is a disease that makes one question one’s sanity,” says Shana.

Jed is the tenth child in Africa to be treated for this rare disease. He was discharged after only four days at the hospital, and was walking without crutches a month later due to extensive physiotherapy.

During their time at the hospital, Jed and Shana were introduced to a number of families who had suffered a similar ordeal and were inspired to have a positive impact on those affected by this condition.

“We decided to pay it forward and make a Tedi a day. We started selling them and everyone wanted one for themselves,” Shana says.

Jedi Tedi was formed, and they began making unique teddy bears from socks – which Jed had been unable to wear during his illness.

The organisation focuses on raising funds for the Red Cross Pain Clinic by selling the handmade Tedis.

Jed has done a number of motivational speeches about CRPS and his experience with beating the illness, and the teddy bears have become popular with those who hear him speak.

“We get bombarded with people wanting them,” says Shana.

The organisation has empowered local women to make them, but is also in desperate need for volunteers to assist.

“Our house has turned into a sewing factory. We do our work in the morning and then sew in the afternoon. We have sewing day on Thursday for volunteers to come make them. We can’t keep up with

Cassiem says the planning of the trip came after several home visits to elderly residents in his ward.

“I came across people who were wheelchair bound, and a few of them informed

me that they haven’t seen what the City of Cape Town looks like for many years.

I thought, let’s set up an event in order for them to explore what the new City looks like.

“With this trip being part of the ward’s allocation, these senior citizens were able to explore a trip around the Peninsula to see what Cape Town looks like after two three decades of development, and since their last visit too. It was a bit of a challenge with some of the seniors, but in the end we made it known that they should not see it as a burden to us, but rather that we all enjoyed the day. It was a great pleasure for us to allow them to see the City again after so many years.”

“We’re honoured to be involved with the hospital. This sickness changed our lives and gave us such humbleness. We’ve never experienced such care as we did at the hospital.”

Lovers’ quarrel turns deadly AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem The community of Manenberg has been left in shock after the gruesome death of a 20-year-old woman.

Zeenit Cupido died inside her boyfriend’s home after being stabbed in the back on Good Friday. The suspect, who has been arrested and identified as Cupido’s 20-year-old boyfriend, made his first appearance at Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and has since been released on R1000 bail.

According to police, the young girl was at her boy-

friend’s mother’s home in Manenberg Avenue where he allegedly grabbed a bread knife from the kitchen cupboard and stabbed her through the left side of her back.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 22:00 on the day to find the body.

According to relatives of the two, it is believed that a quarrel broke out between the two, just minutes before the incident happened. The two had been dating since high school and were set to get married later this year. Captain Ian Bennet from Manenberg Police Station confirmed that the suspect was arrested at the crime scene shortly after the incident and spent the

weekend in jail for the murder of Cupido. He is due for his second court appearance soon.

Residents of Manenberg were left in panic after several gunshots were fired in the area on Wednesday morning.

Locals say gang members could be seen roaming the streets with visible guns just before police arrived in the area at 10:30.

A 34-year-old suspect was arrested soon after, as Manenberg police took to the streets to do high-density patrols in the vicinity of Pecos Road, one of many hotspots in the community.

“They (police) heard gunshots and managed to turn the vehicle around quick enough to see a male running down Pecos Road with a firearm in his hands.

“They chased him and cornered him at an address in the same street. They found him still holding the firearm in his hands,” says Captain Ian Bennet, media spokesperson for Manenberg Police Station­.

“The suspect was charged and arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“An additional charge of possession of a prohibited firearm will also be added as the serial number had been filed off. He will be appearing in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon.”

Brigadier Enolium Joseph, Manenberg’s station commander, says the area has been saturated with additional police members lately, as they continue to clamp down on gangs and gang violence.

“During this time it has been noted that gang members cause sporadic shooting because they are either testing weapons brought into the area or creating panic and fear in the community.

“We will not tolerate this lawless behaviour and any person found shooting or testing weapons in the residential area will be charged for the possession of that weapon and the setting off or firing of a shot in a municipal area,” he says.

“This means communities can report shooters that are going about setting off gunshots randomly. Even if no firearm is found we will conduct the necessary investigation and charge the suspect. We cannot allow our community to be held hostage in this unsafe environment­.”

The angry group of people, who come from different backgrounds, have now raised concerns about the upholding of religion at various children’s homes across the Cape Flats, after witnessing the feeding of pork to several Muslim children.

One witness claims that while volunteering at Christine Revell Children’s Home they found that staff members were feeding Muslim children pork for dinner. “Upon questioning, it was discovered that it was due to the fact that noone is prepared to supply halaal meat to the home. This is terrible!

I know many other homes and schools that are going through similar situations and I really hope to be able to find a halaal meat supplier for them,” she says.

“At an educare in Mowbray where I volunteered, their children are also facing the same issue.

Muslim children are being fed pork due to the fact that there’s a lack of Muslim influence.”

Another distraught volunteer called on the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) to step in. “This is wrong, no matter what the situation. The MJC, which represents the Muslim community in the

Western Cape, can assist our people to ensure that steps are followed at these homes for our vulnerable Muslim children. This is an issue all over the country and some organisations are not bothered with the fact that they are feeding children things that they are not supposed to eat, no matter what religion they practice.”

Alicia Rhoda, the director at Christine Revell Children’s Home, has denied the allegations and says the meat used for the children’s food is purchased from a halaal meat supplier.

“We trust that the meat sold to us is halaal. Even though we only have one confirmed Muslim child at present, we continue to prepare halaal meals even if Muslim children are in the minority, because we are obligated to use halaal meats by the Department of Social Development,” she says.

Rhoda stressed that some of her staff are Muslim and eat halaal meats, and the food preparation for the children, specifically cooking utensils and pots, are under no circumstances mixed. We have separate microwaves for that purpose too. I hereby confirm that under no circumstances do the children eat non-halaal meats.”

Mishka Darries, media spokesperson for MJC, says their organisation has not received any complaints from the community regarding the Home. The MJC Halaal Trust will investigate the matter and will provide a full report.

Conrad Koch from Woodstock has been challenging South African politics and other controversial issues through his satire and comedy on the local scene since he was a young student and has become one of the best known comedic ventriloquists in the country since.

“It was an amazing place. They teach you how to do magic, juggling, how to do balloon modelling, how to ride a uni-cycle and the person who runs the place does and teaches ventriloquism,” says Koch. “I was inspired by the College of Magic because I got to see some of the best ventriloquists of the time there and that showed me that this was a really fun thing. This little dude became alive, he can go out there and wreak havoc and he can say, ‘it wasn’t me, it’s the little guy’.”

Although he has only been on the scene for the last 15 years, he says he has been perfecting the art of speaking without speaking since he started out at the age of 11.

“How ventriloquism works is you learn the basics and then spend an enormous amount of time practising on your own and then an even more amount of time dying on comedy stages until you get good. You then combine stand-up comedy and character comedy with puppetry and not moving your lips.

There are a whole lot of skills involved there.

His first character was Sedrick the snake, a sock puppet that came out of a basket. He then developed other characters before the successful political analyst Chester Missing was born.

“When stand-up kicked off post-apartheid, there were a group of us at UCT who were all in the same year and we all had something in common with comedy happening in Observatory. We did not know there was a career in comedy.

There was not

much of a politically-conscious audience.

We never thought we could do comedy. It kind of just happened and we saw we could make money off it,” he says.

Koch (41) is an academic with a Masters Degree in anthropology and majored in drama, anthropology and psychology while at UCT. “I thought I would be a therapist of some sorts, a drama therapist or something like that. I stopped doing drama and psychology and really became interested in anthropology because I realised I did not know much about my own country,” he says.

He grew up in Rondebosch and was a selfprofessed odd-ball, always doing something outside the norm.

“I lived a very privileged, sheltered life in many ways and I was an outsider on a very wealthy inside. I got bullied a lot at school because I was odd and doing magic tricks. I did not know how to fit in with that group but it wasn’t that I wasn’t part of that group, I just could not fit in,” he says.

N Rangers were forced to produce extra effort after they narrowly beat Hanover Park 3-2 in their tense away fixture at the Hickory Road Astro Turf in an SAB Safa Cape Town home derby played on Saturday.

The log leaders, with seven games remaining, weren’t guaranteed any victory after Hanover Park played mouth-watering football.

Danny Molopo gave Rangers an early lead, while Shane Jacobs further strengthened Rangers’ position authority with a volley.

Hanover Park strikers Roderick Francis and Malcolm Fourie levelled the score and brought panic in the Rangers camp, but it was Thabiet Baartman who managed to find a way to salvage the victory for the log lead-

Goal 50 United caused a stir after they humiliated Silver Spurs 2-1 in Heideveld.

Mario van Niekerk’s United were determined to settle the score against their rivals.

Santos continued their upward trend in the ABC Motsepe Western Cape standings after beating Royal Blues FC 3-0 in Lansdowne on Friday night.

Goals from Abucele Notywala, Keeno Shellar and Ashley Hartog ensured that Santos now find themselves in sixth place on the log, usurping Glendene United, who succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat to log leaders Steenberg United.

Steenberg United now lead the standings on 61 points after playing 26 matches, with their closest rivals Ace FC on 57 points, but having played an extra fixture.

This means that Steenberg United will only need seven points from their four remaining fixtures to capture the title and book a

place in the national play-offs at the end of the season.

Enduro Western Cape (EWC) will be launching its three-race series with round one taking place on the prestigious and unraced Hoogekraal trails on 22 April.

The series is made possible thanks to Giant Bicycles and Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club.

Enduro racing in its most basic definition is a type of mountain bike racing where the downhills are timed, and the uphills are not.

Riders are timed in primarily downhill sections (special stages or SS), with neutral “transfer” stages in between (liaisons).

Winners are those who accumulate the lowest combined time from the timed SS. “EWC welcome all riders and our courses are totally rideable as long as you are enthusiastic about being challenged on fun single-track. It’s like a weekend ride with your friends – regroup at the top and race each other down the trail,” says iRideAfrica’s Daniel Dobinson.

While the racing is fiercely competitive, “the vibes are super chilled” and enduros are a great way to gain technical skills and fitness.

Enduros can be raced on all types of mountain bike, but full-suspension trail bikes with travel between 120 and 160mm with dropper posts are recommended. Protective clothing such as long sleeves, knee covers and full-finger gloves are advised.

Open-face helmets are fine while some riders choose to wear full-face helmets.

he NFC Central Athletics 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run event that was scheduled to take place on Sunday has been postponed. According to Central Athletics race director, Wafeeq Williams, the City of Cape Town requested that the race be held on an alternative date due to compliance issues. “We are actively engaging the City, working towards resolving outstanding queries to ensure we may proceed. By Friday afternoon we already received thousands of entries and expected more runners to register on the day.”

According to the City’s executive director for safety and security Richard Bosman, no application was made for road closures for the date of the event and that there was no notice to impacted residents, while no medical plan was approved by the City’s emergency medical services.

“Based on the available information, the organiser failed to secure public liability insurance for the event. The event orgniser indicted

that the proposed event will attract a crowd of approximately 2000 to 5000 people,” says Bosman.

He adds that the events application to the City was submitted too late and that it had to be submitted at least 20 working days prior to the event.

“The event permit application is dated the 2 March, but was only submitted to the City on 22 March 2018. This was extremely short notice, especially since there was non-compliance with the requirements of the events by-law,” he adds.

Bosman says that as a result, the event permit application was withdrawn and confirms that Central Athletics Club will provide an alternate date when submitting a new events permit application.

Meanwhile, Williams thanked the entrants for their patience and understanding.

A new date will be finalised before the end of the week and communicated to all participants via email, SMS and social media.
