City makes way for fishmongers Mixed feelings about proposed move to Klip Road cemetery fleamarket site MELISSA LE ROUX

A

PLAN to have the fishmongers of Grassy Park and Retreat incorporated into the fleamarket along Prince George Drive is under way.

About 15 years ago, around the time the M5 was widened, the Princess Vlei Fish Market offered fish hawkers a place to sell their stock.

But since 2006, the Rondevlei Subcouncil has expressed its unhappiness with the operational habits of the fishmongers, and sellers were eventually removed from this area due to poor on-site waste management and the lack of a cleansing and disinfection programme.

Ward Councillor Jan Burger says Grassy Park residents complained about fish offal littering the roads.

The fish market then became notorious for criminal activities in 2009, after three bodies were found at the vlei within a period of 12 months.

On 14 March, the body of Brent Fortuin was found dumped at the market. On January 11, Warren Eckhardt’s body was found dumped close to the market and in the same month, the body of Shafiek Leonard was also found

at the vlei.

The market was closed down and Law Enforcement moved the fishmongers to other sites.

“They are still carrying on with their business but the main rule was that they had to dispose of their waste at Vissershok Disposal Facility in Milnerton,” says Burger.

With assistance from the Department of Economic and Social Development – in terms of planning and executing a proper waste disposal facility – the fleamarket, at Klip Road cemetery will be used by the fishmongers in due course.

The Princess Vlei fleamarket, like most, is held on a Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00. However, Philip Bam, chairperson of Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy Park Residents’ Association (Logra), says that when he drove past the area where the market is held at around 09:00 on Sunday, there seemed to be no activity.

“From our budget, we bought more gravel to make better floor space and ensure comfort for the stallholders,” says Burger, adding that the plans “need to go through all the correct channels” before the fishmongers will be incorporated into the fleamarket.

“These plans take time – you can’t do everything at the snap of fingers; all sorts of things must be looked at, from each and every angle. We need to look at how we are going to put fishmongers together with people selling fruit and other household items.

“The flies and smell from the fish would cause chaos among the other stallholders if we don’t prepare properly – we also need to find out from them if they would be okay with it,” says Burger.

He adds that the plans for the incorporation are still in their “foetal stages” and could take some time. “The department is still supposed to get back to us on what the plan would be for proper waste disposal. A system was tested at the fish market in Athlone and we are going to be provided with feedback,” he says.

Dawn Weaver, who has been selling fish on the side of Klip Road for 13 years, says she is happy where she is.

“It’s not only a convenient spot for my customers but they can also buy fish freely, without hassle. I’m very happy here; the people are friendly, it’s nice, cool and not cramped like it would be on a market.

“However, I do hope that they will open up a market for us somewhere, sometime, because they are going to chase us away from here soon,” she says.

Weaver has concerns about the market.

“They would have to appoint someone who will oversee the market. People mess and throw their waste down the drain and it’s not healthy.

“There needs to be a proper system for us to get rid of waste,” she says.

According to Paul Williamson, service coordinator within the Department of Economic and Social Development, a market is specifically established to create opportunities for people to make a living.

“The plans for the fleamarket and fish market to work as one, are still in discussion. It’s in the very early stages still because with the idea of having fish trading together with a fleamarket, one has to be very careful.

“We also need to make sure that the fishmongers would want to go into an established area such as a market. They are used to selling their fish from the back of their bakkies – it’s like a tradition – and it would be unfair if they didn’t have a say,” he says.

HAPPY MOMENT: The Eoan Group and the School of Performing Arts were invited to perform two of their dances at the FNB Dance Umbrella at the Wits Theatre in Gauteng on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 Febru­ ary. It is the premier dance festival in South Africa. Called “The Mirror Crack’d” and “Words without Voic­ es”, the dance pieces were choreo­ graphed by the sister/brother duo of Abeedah and Ebrahim Medell. They relate to the different challenges of life, and were performed by nine young people ranging between the ages of 14 and 26, from areas such as Kewtown, Silvertown, Bonteheu­ wel, Samora Machel and Mitchell’s Plain. These previously disadvantaged young people took the FNB Dance Umbrel­ la to new heights with their stirling performances. The tour was arranged and paid for by the Eoan Group, and allowed these young people to tour for four days without placing a financial burden on their parents. Some of these young dancers had their first experience of travelling and performing on professional stages.

A PLACE OF LEARNING: The Sunbird Envi­ ronmental Education Centre, the only edu­ cational centre left in the entire Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), was launched on Tuesday 10 February. The cen­ tre, located in the scenic Silvermine River Valley, may be hired by schools, youth groups, clubs, churches, environmental groups and any other groups for camps, workshops, seminars and meetings. MILESTONE: Retreat resident So­ phie Norling (seated) celebrated her 99th birthday on Wednesday 16 Feb­ ruary with a lavish breakfast with three of her daughters. Norling, who has been living in the area for 56 years, and her deceased husband had six children. Her eldest son has passed on. She also has 10 grand­ children, 15 great­grandchildren and one great­great­grandchild. The ac­ tive and green­fingered senior cur­ rently resides with daughter Hazel (standing). Police survey community to determine needs MELISSA LE ROUX

DOMESTIC violence, drug-related, contact crimes, burglaries and sexual offences are the top five crimes reported at Grassy Park and Steenberg police stations.

That’s according to a survey conducted by the Department of Community Safety to identify how to provide the best possible service to the community.

The Wynberg police cluster, which includes the two stations, together with Community Safety, used a sample of about 30 people to identify policing needs and priorities.

The findings of the survey, conducted in October and November last year, were discussed at a meeting between CPF chairpersons, police officers and other roleplayers in the community on Wednesday 23 February.

The self-completion questionnaire allowed respondents to give their honest and, if they chose, anonymous opinion without fear of intimidation.

This survey was spread across communities throughout the Western Cape. In total, 1 340 forms were completed.

Findings from the survey mentioned gangsterism as “frequently” being at the root of crimes in communities across the Western Cape.

The study also included questions about service delivery concerns in police stations – such as police resources not being effectively used, insufficient police members and lack of trust about the witness protection programme.

The survey shows that 73% of residents are dissatisfied with inadequately equipped police stations.

Residents raised the issue of the police’s response time – 83% said that it should take fiveto 10 minutes to respond to a crime.

“The information that was gained in the survey will be forwarded to the South African Police Service so that the results can be incorporated into the safety plans of the designated areas,” says Steenberg CPF chair-

person, Kevin Southgate.

In a report on the identification of policing needs and priorities in the Western Cape, MEC of Community Safety Albert Fritz said: “Crime creates a web of fear and impacts on the daily lives of many people in the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole. Increasing safety is imperative to improving the quality of life of all South Africans.”

The Department of Community Safety recommended that: . Community police forums be assisted to develop indicators to monitor police performance at local police precinct level. . The skill of detectives be improved so that their evidence-collecting could be improved; and .Awareness of the witness protection programme be promoted in communities, to encourage community members to testify in the prosecution of criminals.

Other issues raised in the survey for Steenberg and Grassy Park police stations were: . The relationship between SAPS, the CPF and neighbourhood watches needs be improved. . Police members should be trained in communication skills. . That schools form part of policing by having a representative of Safer Schools attending CPF meetings,and workshops, which would address the key findings of the survey. . That police officers be equipped with specific skillsto deal with gang violence; and . That there should be more visible policing.

Philip Bam, chairperson of Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy Park Residents’ Association (LOGRA) says: “The survey does not reflect the concerns of the Grassy Park community. More action must be taken against shebeens, which is a very big concern. And housebreakings, which don’t receive high priority.

“We want foot patrols in our area, we want to see more stop-and-search operations and a better response time,” he says.

‘She was called home’ DALEEN FOUCHÉ

A BELOVED and wellknown face in Muizenberg, Lynette Manasse, passed away on Saturday 26 February after suffering a heart attack.

The Strandfontein resident worked as the “friendly” front end controller at Checkers in Muizenberg for the past 19 years, and died at the age of 42.

To the regular customers at Checkers, Manasse became “a part of the family”, says Natalie Petersen, administration manager for Checkers in Muizenberg.

“She was a real people’s person,” says Petersen.

She says since passed, many customers had come into the store to inquire

“Our regular customers knew Lynette on a first name basis. She would always pray for people and genuinely ask how they were doing.”

Petersen says it was a “tremendous shock” to find out Manasse had died. “I was on leave and Lynette sent me an SMS on Friday to ask when I was returning and to tell me that she missed me.”

Petersen says she will always be grateful to Manasse for introducing her to Christianity.

“Lynette was called home.”

Manasse leaves behind three children, a daughter and two sons.

She was laid to rest on Saturday 5 March, after a service in the Metropolitan Church in Lavender Hill.

‘Lance Armstrongs’ in the making MELISSA LE ROUX

YCLING has always been a great passion of Igshaan Isaacs, founder, member and chairperson of Muhammadeyah Cycling Club in Ottery.

Isaacs named the club after Muhammadeyah Primary School in Wynberg, where he has been teaching Grade 6 for 12 years.

Starting out in 2005, the club has helped many youngsters accomplish great success with their cycling skills.

Isaacs says if young cyclists have potential and want to enhance their cycling skills, the club helps push them in the right direction, enabling them to compete in races – and possibly become the next Lance Armstrong.

“I started this club as a way of giving back to the community.

The main focus is to provide ways for children to have fun and learn how to ride their bicycles in a skilled way, but the club is open to adults too.”

The club, which has 112 members, meets regularly at Ferndale

CYCLE TOUR: The members of Mu­ hammadeyah Cycling Club are trained to prepare them to partici­ pate in various cycle tours and rac­ es.

Since 2009 the club has been funded by the Pedal Power Association, which donated 10 road bikes and eight track bikes to them. “They have been very good to us. We need other sponsors as well as biking is a very expensive sport.”

The club teaches its members a range of skills, such as those needed for competitive racing and how to control the bike by “playing around” with it, eventually learning how to stop without using the brakes.

Some of the club’s top riders include 20-year-old Dwayne Fisher of Manenberg, who participated in the Giro Delcapo last year. He was part of the first group to leave in the Argus Cycle Tour.

Isaacs’ son, Ay-Yoob Isaacs (under-14) came first in the South African Track Championships and Ammaar Dolly came first in the Boxing Day Track race last year.

“This is just some of the potential out there and if they want to follow biking as a career, we can help them go to a high level as we can provide them with full racing licences to go to provincial.”

The next annual Muhammadeyah Cycle Club Criterium (a short course race) will be held on Sunday 24 April and local clubs are invited to participate.

FROM counselling abused women to renovating and revamping the room of a first-year law student, Steenberg-based organisation Women of Worth (WOW) continues to grow from strength to strength.

Established in February last year, WOW, which is run by five women from the community, has launched several successful projects.

WOW’s vision and mission is based on Christian principles, but the organisation does not turn away practitioners of other religions.

The women initially began hosting breakfasts and motivational talks, but the initiative grew into a resource at which victims of gender abuse are able to be counselled and helped to patch up their lives.

This was done through the provision of counselling sessions, support groups and assistance in gaining employment and finding shelter.

Last year, the women glammed out a matric pupil from Crestway High School in preparation for her matric dance.

“We assisted her financially with her dress and shoes, had her makeup and hair done and found a car to take her to the glamourous event,” says founder and coordinator of WOW, Shireen Dreyer.

“We decided to do this after we realised that there was a need for youths in the community to feel special on that one day.”

And from this year on they are hoping to sustain this project. “We want girls from Crestway and Sibelius high schools to write an essay of 500 words about why they deserve to be pampered for their matric dance,” Dreyer says. “We will then choose one girl from each school as the winners of this gift.

However, the girls need to come from single parent or widowed families.”

In June last year, WOW also gave the room of a first-year law student from the area a makeover. “We got together and realised that she could not study in that environment,” Dreyer says.

“So we all chipped in with goods from our own home, painted the room and refurbished the furniture. Her room really looks lovely and we want to give that to so many more aspiring youths from the community.” Another project launched

by Dreyer and WOW member, Carmenita van Harte, is the Breakfast Ministry, which sees scores of youths from the community flock to Dreyer’s home every morning for a bite to eat.

“A child cannot learn on an empty stomach and, through my visits to schools I noticed that the children were eating their lunches in the morning,” she says.

“So we decided to give them a bowl of porridge each morning. It has been so successful, especially with the generous donation of a businessman in Mozart Street.”

At the end of the month, 16 women from the abused women support group will be taken on a camp to Betty’s Bay, while the organisation’s hair-cutting drive will commence at primary schools in the area during the first week of March.

“We have so many plans and are so grateful for everything we have already been able to do and have received,” Dreyer says. “Last year was a challenging year, but we will continue to do our best for the community through the grace of God. We will continue with our ministries through projects, as well as the counselling for abused women, HIV/Aids patients and marriage.

Two shootings in Steenberg, one fatal THE body of a 20-year-old man was found in Botma Street, Steenberg, with multiple gunshot wounds to the hip, chest and head.

Constable Grant Oaks from Steenberg Police Station attended the scene at 17:20 on Sunday 6 March. At this stage gang involvement has not been not ruled out. Police have opened a murder docket and request anyone with information regarding the death of the young man to come forward.

When he looked behind him, he saw two unknown men on bicycles who came straight at him. He ran into a yard, pursued by the two suspects

on their bikes. Four shots were fired at him, but he managed to hide from his assailants in a garage. Another three shots were fired. A case of attempted murder is being investigated and gang involvement has not been yet been ruled out. . In the early hours of Friday 4 March, Steenberg police officers were conducting regular crime prevention operations when they arrested a man for allegedly dealing in dagga in the Village Heights area of Lavender Hill. Warrant Officer Hermanus van Dyk, of Steenberg Police Station, says the suspect was caught red-handed with a plastic bag containing six parcels of dagga.

Van Dyk says the man tried to justify the dagga by saying he was a Rasta, but he was charged with dealing in illegal substances. . In an unrelated case, 51 parcels of dagga were recovered in a house in Village Heights Lavender Hill on Friday 4 March at 13:00.

THE 2011 SA-Kirstenbosch Chelsea Flower Show exhibit has been saved, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC) and the SA Gold Coin Exchange.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from Monday 23 May to Thursday 26 May in London and this will be the 36th year that South Africa has been represented.

People’s Post launches new column by veteran journalist

Give value for money TONY ROBINSON

E

XACTLY why the City Council decided to table its draft budget on the day the national budget was presented in Parliament is difficult to understand.

Cynics would say it was a case of dumping bad news on the public while their attention was on Pravin Gordhan and the upheaval in North Africa and the Middle East.

Bad news? Well, every single increase announced is above the present inflation rate – and that makes it bad news for most of us.

On the other hand, it could have been worse, as the increases are certainly lower than they were last year.

But one would expect this to be the case a few months before the municipal elections.

My own view is that the City bosses think they have done a good job and they certainly don’t see it as bad news. They just want to get it out of the way before the electioneering begins in earnest.

So let’s look at the facts. Rates are to go up by 5.9%. Electricity will go up by nearly 20%; water and sanitation charges will go up by 8% (and 10% for each of the two years following the election) and refuse collection fees will go up by 5.5%.

And the cost of running the City (the operating costs) will rise by

more than 12%.

All this while the current inflation rate is under 4%!

Last year we had a 14% increase in operating expenditure; an average increase of 24.6% in electricity tariffs; an 18% increase for refuse collection; a 10% increase for water and sanitation and a theoretical 9.3% increase on the average rates bill.

So the budget may be less painful than last year’s one, but that is little cause for comfort to people who do not get the kind of pay increases the City Council has handed out in the last few years.

Mr Gordhan told us in the national budget that the cost of public service salaries has doubled in the last five years.

Whether or not municipal salaries were included is uncertain, but municipal workers and councillors have done pretty well.

Perhaps well enough to lose touch with the economic realities that beset the rest of us. While the private sector has had to endure wage freezes, retrenchments, reduced working hours for reduced wages and other desperate measures to survive the recession, the public service has prospered.

The bitter irony is that the private sector pays the taxes to keep the public services going in the style to which they have become accustomed.

How much longer can we afford to finance these growing bureaucracies that are not exactly noted

Participating staffers donated R50 for a haircut and R25 for a hairspray. They were served by professional hairdressers from Salon Eve and Steve from 09:00 to 14:30 in the foyer of the Naspers Centre.

There is every reason to demand greater efficiency and better value for our money. . Tony Robinson is a veteran journalist and commentator on civic affairs in Cape Town. His columns, “City Diary” in the Cape Times and later “Civic Diary” in the city’s first free newspapers, won the Sanlam national award for the best column in a community newspaper in 1993 – and some unusual praise from the judges, with one of them remarking, “I would hate to be a councillor in your town!”.

RAIN doors shut on a commuter’s shopping bags … trapping them momentarily until a fellow passenger opens the doors.

Just a moment sandwiched in the bustle of a train journey, but recorded on film, it becomes part of a “metaphor for the journey of life we travel daily”.

“Because life is a journey” is freelance journalist Munyaradzi Makoni’s observation on the voice over of his short documentary film, “Train tunes”.

A man with a weather-beaten face sits on a train platform and has a long drink from a cooldrink bottle.

“A theatre” is the succinct voice over.

Of commuters who read on the trains, Makoni remarks quietly: “The noise boosts their understanding.”

Makoni recently completed a two-week documentary filmmaking course at the University of Cape Town.

The course brought together five youths from Khayelitsha and three women from the Saartjie Baartman Centre in Athlone, a centre for abused women.

The course was taught by South African-born Paul Yule, a veteran filmmaker who has produced more than 31 documentary films on six continents, some of them award-winning.

Each person or team had to produce a four to five minute film, recording, editing and packaging it.

Makoni says the name of his film refers to the tune that always accompanies a train journey.

“The tune takes many forms. It could be music from blind sing-

“It can also be a tune of people turning a train journey into a business enterprise.”

Makoni says he chose the subject of the trains to awaken people to what happens daily with a lighter look.

And he adds that he loves the trains, in spite the overcrowding and the occasional delays.

He adds when you imagine how many have to use trains, you appreciate that they have to use them, whether they love it or not.

Makoni says the challenge was getting the best shot on a moving train and confining his observations to a film of four minutes and 21 seconds.

He adds he would love to do more of these fascinating stories in future if he had the means.

“Stories focusing on social lives are things that contribute to our humanness.

“A life that if we look closely is also political and economic,” he muses.

IN CELEBRATION of 25 years of service, the Islamic Social and Welfare Association (ISWA) will be hosting a gala event at Cape Town College in Kromboom Road on Saturday 12 March.

The anniversary also marks the start of a five-year project for ISWA, which is situated in Belgravia Estate, to acquire their own premises and develop a learning centre for their school.

ISWA offers counselling services, social intervention strategies, further education and training, poverty alleviation (through educational subsidies) and youth and children’s development programmes.

These services are offered to people of all religions.

ISWA’s doors were first opened in 1986 by Nurounihar Minton and Fowzia Ryklief, who are still involved with the organisation.

“The two women saw the need for trauma counselling and the nonprofit organisation was born during the apartheid era.

Families were dying from abuse and drugs and ISWA decided they must do something as the communities were disintegrating,” says Rushdy Siers, the CEO of ISWA. “As they continued to counsel people throughout the years they saw the need to do more to help the communities and started a few projects.”

In 1987, ISWA rallied to support the international call for the rights of children, becoming one of many organisations which rallied to support the Rainbow Children’s Day campaign.

In 1994, ISWA alone carried on the tradition of the Rainbow Children’s Day. The campaign came to an end in 2004, when the weekend was dis-

rupted by a severe storm which hit Cape Town.

A week later an appeal was made to the Great Moscow Circus and a special show was staged for more than 1 000 children and their caregivers.

In 2004, the Minton School of Development was launched to help children.

At the school they offer two-year courses in project management for counselling, paralegal counselling financial management and a social auxiliary course.

Participants must have completed matric. Classes are currently held at Athlone High School.

With ISWA’s formation of the Sing-Osman Education Fund, the burden of pupils who want to attend the school has been made lighter, as they receive a bursary and pay only R13 000 instead of the usual R23 000.

ISWA has also introduced a Learn Self-Esteem Forum.

“We have recognised that many things influence people; the circumstances they live in, drug abuse and family disintegration and we need to look at ways to help in the home, school, working and social environment,” says Siers.

He says the aim is to reach thousands of people for the next 25 years and make a difference in their lives.

“We are in talks with schools to include this programme in their curriculum.”

Mirza Parker, the gala-event organiser, says he is planning a “great” event with a line-up that includes local talents; Ganief Parker and guests, the George Werner Band, Little Giants, Emily Bruce and flamenco duo Wathiq Hussein and Rajissi.

Bumpy ride WESTERN CAPE MEC for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, boarded a train from Khayelitsha to Cape Town last week to experience for himself the troubles that frustrate regular commuters.

Fortunately for Metrorail, which is thought to have been unaware of the MEC’s trip, everything ran smoothly, aside from the fairly empty peak-hour train arriving at its destination seven minutes late. In reports, Carlisle dubbed the journey “excellent” when compared to conditions on the same line a year ago.

But while Carlisle’s efforts should be commended, his single novelty rail trip cannot compare to the everyday horrors that mostly poor commuters are forced to endure.

For them there are no alternatives, and the recent 41c per litre increase in fuel costs may see their numbers swell in future.

The flood of complaints from frustrated rail commuters seems never-ending. Last year, when Metrorail increased ticket prices and cited Eskom’s increase in electricity tariffs, imported materials used on the railway, labour, and the absence of automated ticket sales as reasons for the price hike, they also promised to raise service standards with the introduction of better facilities at stations just in time for the World Cup. But all too often commuters still find themselves stuck in overcrowded trains during peak-hour, targeted by criminals, and at times are even forced to disembark and walk to nearby stations alongside railway tracks because trains suddenly grind to a halt without any explanation. To the average commuter it would appear that Metrorail shows no respect to its customer. Carslisle has promised to meet with Metrorail to gain answers on faulty doors, security problems and generally poor conditions, demanding of Metrorail consistent service delivery.

National Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndbele has promised 8 000 new coaches for the rail transport network, 1 000 of which should be sent to the Western Cape by 2015. One can only hope there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Until then, commuters face a long road ahead.

Your SMSes Honour community workers BEING involved in community outreach programmes and other community work, I have never felt so lost and without hope for a brighter and new positive place where our people can enjoy what was given to them many years back.

A place where Lavender Hill, the greater Retreat area and poor informal settlements can be called home, sweet home.

We have so many non-profit organisations, community-based organisations, sports clubs, religious establishments and schools with massive problems, but what are we doing to make to make a change in the lives of our people?

We spend more time sorting out the lives of those we don’t want to see in pain, without food, unemployed, abused in all forms of abuse – forgetting about ourselves.

We carry the burdens of others on our shoulders because we keep saying others’ problems are not heavy, because he’s my brother or my sister.

We do all these things and yet we all work so far away from each other, we point fingers at each other, we deny each other access to success and growth. We are afraid that one will gain more than the other.

But in community outreach there is nothing to gain because, most of the time, what you gain is more than you give – and most of the time heads of organisations give out their pockets, with the exception of those receiving foreign funding.

Remember, this letter caries no hate or jealousy, but admiration for all those com-

munity workers in the greater Retreat area who give selflessly. There are so many people who talk – I won’t mention names – who have never visited an informal settlement.

There is no communication with the esteemed big talkers and bench-warming development officials who make promises – they know who they are – and I am so disappointed in them.

For five years, in all the wards, you have never seen anything good done by them.

But my letter is still about the community workers who rise above adversities, who commit themselves, who are insulted, verbally abused and criticised just for the sake of the beloved communities and its people.

In closing, I feel more at ease but I need to salute the following people, organisations and volunteers: Aysha Davids and Women Hope of for the Nation, Mullah Flatwell and Women Against Poverty, Friends of Hope, Lucinda Evans and Philisa Abafazi-Bethu, the Ellen Pakkies Foundation, Jeffrey Fick and his wife, Susan of Lazio Sports Club, Doris Nel for her feeding scheme, Jenny Benjamin and Nazeem Sonday. And to my volunteers – you know who you are – I love you; without you I will not exist.

May 2011 be a good year for your organisations, and I wish that the Department of Social Development would pay us all a salary for the hard work we do as volunteers. But alas, the word volunteers no longer exists in this democratic South Africa.

It was written by University of Cape Town professors and graduates and is published by GetSmarter, a Rondebosch-based firm headed by a UCT graduate.

The textbook is available as a free downloadable PDF, or it can be read directly on the Internet Super-User site.

Sam Paddock, a UCT graduate and managing director of GetSmarter, initiated the Internet Super-User project because he saw a growing need for internet education in South Africa.

Arendse gets tough SAFA Cape Town was forced to adjourn a general council meeting in Old Crossroads on Sunday after two ineligible LFA Crossroads members refused to leave the meeting.

The situation became heated when Safa CT president Norman Arendse told Mike Siheke and Mlungisi Bleki from Crossroads to leave as they “were not accredited to attend”.

Siheke and Bleki both served as president of LFA Crossroads

before a task team headed by Safa CT vice-president Eric Gum was appointed to take over the administration.

Arendse said yesterday it would have been “disrespectful to the accredited task team” if he tolerated the presence of Siheke and Bleki at the meeting.

Arendse said only accredited delegates will be allowed to attend the adjourned meeting on Sunday 13 March at Athlone Stadium, starting at 10:00. .
