ILD animals in the southern suburbs will in future be treated at a R4,6 million medical facility.

In a first for the City, a short-term Wildlife Care Facility opened at the Grassy Park SPCA last Wednesday.

Construction on the facility started last September with primary funding from the national lottery and R600 000 from the SPCA. The facility will provide emergency treatment to a range of injured, sick and errant wild animals.

SPCA CEO Allan Perrins says the wildlife unit “serves a critical role in responding to reports of displaced, injured and sick wildlife and investigates reports of cruelty to wild animals.

However, until now our ability to provide optimal care and treatment to the myriad of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish rescued each year, has been limited by the lack of specialist facilities to properly house and care for them.”

The need for such a facility was identified in 2000 when the SPCA first started responding to wildlife emergencies.

SPCA Wildlife Unit supervisor Brett Glasby says: “The facility has been designed and masterfully built to enable us to simultaneously care for different types of wild animals that require short-term treatment

and care before being released back into the wild or, where appropriate, transferred to a long-term rehabilitation centre.”

He says displaced animals need a safe, warm and quiet place to recover before being released back into the wild.

“For those with injuries, such as burns or wounds, or those that are emaciated and dehydrated, we now have facilities to provide specialist treatment and care.”

The facility will be operated to “internationally recognised standards” and will play a big role in protecting and conserving wildlife.

During the last fiscal year (April 2010 to March 2011) the SPCA Wildlife Unit responded to 230 wildlife rescues involving more than 1 000 animals.

The team investigated nearly 200 wildlife cruelty cases and was involved in over 450 human/wildlife conflict issues.

The unit also undertook inspections of 14 captive wildlife facilities.

They expect these numbers to increase. Although construction is complete, the cost of running the facility is budgeted at just under R1 million a year. The SPCA is looking to individuals, foundations, trusts and corporate donors to support the initiative.

My mother, my hero Dear reader, I dedicate this column to my mother who has been living with breast cancer for more than two years.

I’ll never forget the day my mom’s doctor diagnosed her cancer and her response after crying.

She said: “I will have to live with this”, unlike most people who express fear of dying at such news.

With these words, my mother had inadvertently created a message of hope for herself. Remarkably, she has kept this hope alive, without invasive treatments which our family initially insisted on and retaliated angrily to when she persistently refused to even consider the best known conventional treatment available.

Ultimately though, we had to respect my mother’s right to live her life and manage her illness as she chooses.

Faced with the headstrong, determined matriarch that is my mother, our family fully supported her decision and tried everything we could to strengthen her immune system and give her a fighting chance.

Among the many things we have tried are apricot kernels, vitamins, bitter herbs, olive leaf honey, massage, oils, holy water, prayer, dark chocolate and green juice.

These have brought some relief, but I am constantly amazed at how my mother lives with her pain.

She seldom takes painkillers and even now, after a few teaspoons of morphine, she has lowered her dose. Throughout her illness, my mother has remained her usual talkative, authoritative, smart, wickedly funny self. Despite becoming very frail and thin, she has retained her ability to walk and sit while eating her meals, and have

a puff or two. Who’s counting?

A woman of remarkable faith, willpower and resilience, my mother is an inspiration to her six children and many who know her.

My father would differ somewhat, as it has become his destiny to take care of this strong, wilful woman and their three cats and two birds. His best culinary efforts are often criticised by her and feedback to visitors is that he does not provide her with the balanced diet she requires.

My siblings and I take this with a ton of salt as we know how much effort my father puts into my mother’s meals; in fact, everything he does for her.

To keep the peace, we humour my mother in her diatribe against my father, and then tell him in private we know the truth.

If my mother were to read this, I’d be in trouble.

In the past few months, my mother’s health has deteriorated rapidly and physically she has become a shell of her former self, but her mind is as astute as ever and I still turn to her for guidance on matters finance, career and personal.

I do my best to visit her throughout the week, but Sundays are our days when we talk, feel sad, reminisce and laugh at our silly comments, especially my mom’s gossip about my dad.

What I love most about my interaction with my mother is her brilliant sense of humour and ability to appreciate a good joke – not mine though, as I’m notoriously unfunny.

I cannot believe when looking at my mother’s beautiful smiling face that she is riddled with pain; it is only when I focus on how thin and fragile her wrists and limbs are, that the reality of her illness sinks in.

My mother’s journey has been painful, traumatic and terrifying and I am humbled by her strength and grace. She will always be my heroine and I thank God for every moment I still have with her.

DUE to fuel price hikes, an increasing number of City residents are switching to public transport.

Responding to this, the City of Cape Town’s Transport Department is in the process of expanding its Park-and-Ride network.

The City had 26 Park-and-Ride stations in place as part of the overall Transport Operations Plan for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The second phase will focus on the stations that have the highest number of public transport users and will see the roll-out of more facilities during the next five years at a cost of more than R50 million. Most of these users were on the central and northern line from Cape Town to Khayelitsha and Bellville – which includes Retreat.

Mayoral committee member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Councillor Brett Herron, says a number of station precincts have already been upgraded since the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Herron says: “Park-and-Ride facilities offer a stress-free way for commuters to get to their destination during the most

He adds the facilities also serve the needs of commuters who live beyond practical walking distance from railway stations or bus stops.

August says they are now looking at replacing the copper cables with wire that has no resale value.

Budget constraints, however, may hold up this project.

“We are definitely looking into fixing the problem, but until then, we ask that community members report vandalism and cable theft.”

Resident Shumeez Salie says she is afraid to go anywhere at night because robbers may take advantage of the darkness.

“I stay in my house at night,” she says. “I don’t go out if it isn’t absolutely necessary. There is enough trouble here in Capricorn with gangsters and illegal shebeens, but now we have to worry about this as well.”

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says socalled “tik-koppe” are the ones to blame for the darkness.

“They are so hooked on the stuff that they steal anything they get their hands on.

The street lights are an easy way to make money to support their habit. They crack the plate open where the cables run through and quickly take what they need.

“It’s unfair to the rest of us because we live in fear at the end of the day.”

Driving down Drury Road, People’s Post found that for each street light that works, three are not.

Drury Road is the main artery into Capricorn.

Pastor Trevor Trout, Chairperson for the Concerned Residents of Capricorn Association, says the streetlights get fixed, but a short while later the problem recurs.

Trout, who is pastor of the Throne Room Tabernacle Church in Drury Road, says “evil thrives in the dark”.

He is the first to admit the community needs to take responsibility for their areas, but he also feels the City needs to do more to try and stop cable theft.

“It is so easy for thieves to open these poles and steal the wires,” says Trout.

“Why not look at putting the opening slots higher so they don't have easy access to them?

“The social issues need to be worked on, but I feel the City needs to play a part in trying to stop cable theft from happening, thus making the community safer.”

Ward councillor Shaun August says the City is at its wits’ end and is exploring alternative ways to stop cable theft.

Books for less privileged THOUSANDS of books have been collected in the Juta and Company drive.

The book retailer and publisher hosted the drive which started on 23 April, World Book Day. Working with The Bookery, they aim to help build libraries at schools and in communities where none existed previously, and to bolster resources at others.

Cosmas Mabeya, project manager at The Bookery, says those books which were fully prepared are currently being catalogued onto the computer library’s lending system: “This is the final stage in the process before this collection of books is shelved at a school library.” Juta and Company kick-started the initiative by donating R700 000 worth of books which volunteers began

sorting, covering and cataloguing along with books donated by the public.

Lynne du Toit, Juta & Company CEO, says it was wonderful to see so many people volunteer: “Students, professionals, even the Western Cape Education MEC, Donald Grant, as well as visitors from overseas turned up to donate or cover books.” Du Toit adds she is hopeful the book donation drive will grow into an annual event. “Our efforts will be ongoing and in future we hope to continue to work with The Bookery and set ourselves targets, while encouraging further community involvement.” She says used books in a good condition can still be dropped off in the donation bin housed at their flagship Juta bookshop in Dreyer Street, Claremont.

Community prays together to find solutions GOOD samaritans in Lavender Hill showed their support beyond religious lines last week.

Shafiek Rademeyer and Farieda Adams from the Mumtaaz Madrassa hosted a prayer day where Muslims and Christians had the opportunity to pray together.

The madrassa, in Hilary Way, was established in 2010.

It offers spiritual guidance and helps to feed the community.

The prayer day was to bring the community together. They prayed for a safer community and discussed how to uplift residents.

Community leaders Clive Jacobs, maulana Noor Moses and Maulana Redewaan Berry showed their support.

“At first it was a bit uncomfortable, because they prayed in Arabic and we, as Christians, didn’t understand, but it was really good to see them reach out to the community,” says Jacobs.

Catch early train, Grant tells school children PUPILS using the train have to get up earlier to make it to school on time.

That’s the advice from education minister Donald Grant.

Grant, together with Minister of Public Works and Transport, Robin Carlisle, last week made a whistlestop at the Golden Acre in the City Bowl to determine the impact of train delays on pupils.

Many pupils using the trains cut through the Golden Acre to get to school on time. Delays in train schedules due to, among others, cable theft and faulty signals, have last week prevented pupils and workers from getting to their destination on time.

An education department clamp-down on late-coming at schools have proven a difficult task as a result of late trains.

Grant says: “I have often received complaints from pupils that delays on Metrorail trains were the cause of them being late.

While I am fully aware that many of these learners simply do not wake up in time, one has to feel sympathetic for those learners who did plan to get to school on time, but were delayed because the train was late.”

Grant says he roped in Carlisle to see first-hand how late Metrorail trains affected “one of their biggest clients, the pupils”.

Pupils told them trains were frequently late on rainy days, Thursdays and Fridays.

“My message to learners is to please take these delays into consideration when planning to travel to school. Wake up a bit earlier on these days to make provision for delays.

“While it is unacceptable that they can’t consistently rely on such a service, this is the sad reality they face. So, unfortunately, this could mean getting up an hour earlier on these days until Metrorail becomes more organised and reliable.”

Carlisle says: “The prevailing conditions of Metrorail’s lack of access control and general security, shortage of trains and an outmoded signalling system have made it inevitable that the trains will not run on

This musical romp, produced and directed

by Jayson King, was a sold-out success at the Joseph Stone in Athlone last year. It will be brought to life again at the same venue for two performances on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 June at 20:00.

I have never smoked cannabis. Nor do I intend to. I still feel wholeheartedly that it should be legalised.

Banning it deprives the world of a commodity (hemp) as useful as bamboo to the Chinese. Without hemp, there would be no Cape Town – all those hemp ropes on which sailing ships relied.

Imagine a world where not one tree has to be sacrificed for paper. The American Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Hemp grows easily almost anywhere and without fertiliser, unlike cotton.

Yet you can make longlasting fabric from it.

Hemp is a nutritious foodstuff, both for people and animals. It

is a brilliant insulator and has been used in the construction industry. I have not even touched on its painkilling properties. If it is such a panacea, why was it ever banned? Ask Dupont and the other producers of nylon and synthetic fabrics. Ask the tobacco giants who had to vilify cannabis to divert attention from their own problems. Ask Monsanto and other fertiliser multinationals.

Why take my word for it? Go to the internet encyclopedia wikipedia.com and look under the entries on cannabis. You can download films made about legalising cannabis which I believe will convince you as readily as they converted me.

Banning cannabis is as daft as banning petrol because some idiots like to sniff it!

Itheko bursting at the seams LIAM MOSES

IN THE four short years since its formation, Itheko Sports Athletic Club has grown into one of the largest running clubs in Cape Town – and one of the most well-known.

The club started when founder and current head coach, Farouk Meyer, decided to personally train two heavily overweight acquaintances in 2008. Since then it has grown exponentially into the 1000-strong running force it is today.

However, despite this incredible growth

and the success of the club’s first race, the Jive Slave Route Challenge, which will be hosted for the second time on Sunday 27 May, Lion of Africa Itheko has stuck to its original focus of working with newcomers to the sport.

“The main reason (I started the club) is the instances of ailments like cardio-vascular disease, obesity and high blood pressure that you see around you all the time within our community,” says Meyer.

“All it means is that people need to do some form of exercise. Combined with eating healthily, it will make a difference. My biggest letdown is that I don’t have enough time to document the life-changing experiences people have.”

The club started its speedy growth in size immediately after Meyer took on his first trainees and once people witnessed the change those men had gone through.

At first the newly-formed club met and trained at Rondebosch Common, but once their numbers soared to around 400, they were forced to move to the Rhodes High School in Mowbray.

The club has once again outgrown their home and today they will move to a new location in Willow Road, Observatory.

Meyer says while the number of members on Itheko’s books is impressive, what is more important is the fact that most were novices before they joined.

“I have been running for the last 35 years, but four years ago I realised there is no actual running club that caters for people who have never done sport in their lives before.

According to Meyer, Itheko is now the biggest of the 85 running clubs affiliated to Western Province Athletics.

The club’s name – Itheko – means ‘a big occassion’ in isiXhosa, and over the last two years it has become increasingly appropriate due to the growth in size and the inception of the club’s own road race.

Meyer points out, however, that the club aims to make any run a big occassion for each and every member taking part.

“Most people come here and say ‘I cannot run’, but what we say is that if you can walk you can run. All we do is teach you the difference between walking and running.

“The type of person who will enjoy being part of Itheko is a person who wants to make a difference in their lifestyle in terms of their health.

“We’ll show you how to enjoy the sport and then you’ll enjoy all of the healthy benefits that come with the sport.”

Major netball tournament to be hosted in Cape Town CAPE TOWN will host the first ever World University Netball Championships (WUNC) at the Good Hope Centre in July this year.

The tournament is the biggest netball event outside the world championships, and the Mother City’s netball fans will have the opportunity to see some of the world’s best players in action.

The tournament will be under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the second biggest multicode sports organisation after the Interna-

tional Olympic Committee.

Helene Botha, FISU Netball chairperson, says that the tournament would benefit netball players and Cape Town’s community as a whole.

“Netball is the most popular woman’s sport in South Africa and the world, and hosting a tournament of this standard in South Africa will enable student players to experience international netball in their own backyard. “Even those who are not playing will benefit from being involved in the organisation of the tournament. The tournament

will also provide the community of Cape Town and the surrounding areas (with the opportunity) to experience netball at a very high level.”

Young netball players will also be able to benefit from coaching clinics to be held in and around Cape Town by coaches and players from the 12 participating countries, as part of USSA’s goal of developing sport at grassroots level.

Botha encouraged schools and clubs from all parts of Cape Town to watch the games being played and attend the coaching clin-

ics.

The 12 teams taking part will be divided into three pools, with the top two teams in each pool qualifying for the Elite Six. The cross-pool matches and quarter-finals will be played on one day, with the semifinals and final being played the next day.

The Good Hope Centre has been selected as the venue because it can accommodate two wooden court floors next to each other. It also has all the facilities required by IFNA and FISU, and has ample seating for spectators. .

This year Ottoman CCs second team won their Knockout Final and also secured pro-

motion to the Reserve B league, while the third team won their league.

Nine 100-run scores were posted by Ottoman players during the past season, the best in the club’s history, and this included a double century by Rihaan Goliath in a one-day match.

Solomons to mentor Mitchell’s Plain coaches LIAM MOSES

THE football fraternity in Mitchell’s Plain will be able to pick the brain of one of this city’s top coaches.

Cape Town football legend and former Santos head coach, Boebie Solomons, has been appointed as the head of a programmeto improve and develop football in Mitchell’s Plain.

Solomons has assumed the role of director of coaching at the Mitchell’s Plain Local Football Association (LFA).

Along with assistant director Melvin Macdecorney he will take up the task of ensuring that all club coaches in the area have the skills they need to nurture the abundance of talented young players the LFA believes the area will produce.

According to Solomons, his first step since accepting the post has been to help clubs take a more organised approach to coaching their teams.

“Coaches don’t put enough time into organising their coaching structures. So the first thing I did was set up a coaching structure.

“Now is the time to set up the method of coaching; what is important to know at the beginning and what to coach the different age groups.

“Like a school curriculum, you have to lay a solid foundation, and once you lay that foundation you have to add to what it will take to make a professional player.”

Solomons’ appointment came about after the Mitchell’s Plain LFA and Santos Football Club, his full-time employers, met to discuss how the two organisations could assist each other in promoting football.

To get local coaches up to the level de-

sired by the LFA, Solomons and Macdecorney will host coaching seminars and forums where they will give in-depth, technical lessons on how to coach players of every age group.

“My biggest task is to try to empower the coaches because they are eager and willing to do something, but don’t know when and how to do it,” Solomons says.

“I want to give them the tools and ideas so that when they go out during the week they know exactly what to do.”

Four seminars have already been hosted since the project kicked off two months ago. The coaching courses and Solomons’ appointment form part of a grand plan by the LFA to help talented juniors to progress to the professional ranks.

Rezaan Jacobs, development officer at the LFA, who will be coordinating the project, says the area’s most talented players have not progressed as they should have in previous years.

“We definitely believe that there is a lot of raw talent. I have been in coaching for the past 10 years and there have always been players going to the Old Mutual Academy, Ajax, Santos itself and Vasco da Gama, but we never hear from them afterwards.

“We have all the players here, but we haven’t equipped the coaches to deal with the players we have.”

Jacobs added that improving coaching was just the first phase of the plan to develop football in the area.

The LFA has also invited all coaches from Mitchell’s Plain and those from other LFAs around Cape Town to join the courses at no cost.

Badminton is back LIAM MOSES

A FORMER Retreat resident has set out to revive the sport of badminton in the area, almost 40 years after he says it died out.

Dr Charles Jampies, who grew up in Steenberg, is at the forefront of a decision to move the South African National Defence Force Badminton Club from the military base in Wynberg to the hall in Cafda.

Jampies, now 73, says Retreat was previously a hotbed of badminton in the Southern Peninsula. He says the sport started to slowly die out during apartheid and was finally killed off when the two racially separated provincial associations which controlled it, amalgamated.

“In the early years there were two existing associations, the white association and let’s call it the coloured association. These two associations amalgamated for no other reason than they wanted the top players to meet,” says Jampies.

“When they amalgamated we had many socalled coloured clubs. There were clubs like St Jude’s, Steenberg, Retreat, St Paul’s and Corpus Christi. Wherever there were halls, there were coloured (badminton) clubs.”

However, he says, “when the amalgamation happened all these coloured clubs disintegrated because the sport was taken out of the community”.

Jampies says clubs from privileged areas often refused to play in areas like Retreat or Steenberg because of the stigma attached to the Cape Flats.

“The white clubs were very reluctant to play in Steenberg, which is quite a rough ar-

ea. So we always had to travel and that became a problem, so people stayed away.

“The clubs folded and those interested in badminton then joined the white clubs.”

Jampies, who started playing badminton at the hall in Cafda, has been involved in the sport for around 46 years. He currently coaches the SANDF club.

The team had been based at the hall for several years, but have now been forced to move after the military decided to use the hall for another purpose.

Although the team initially decided to move to Cafda simply because they needed a venue, Jampies believes the move could be beneficial to the area’s youth and the sport of badminton as a whole.

“Badminton is a dying sport within all communities. When I say ‘dying’ it is because in the Western Province Badminton Association 85 plus (players) are over 40 years old.

“It won’t be the older people who will be attracted. It is the younger people whom we hope to attract, which will keep them off the street. Because this is a game that’s played inside a hall, it can be played at night.”

Jampies adds that if young people from Retreat took an interest, adults in the area could also join the team.

“You find that it isn’t like soccer or rugby, where the parents stand on the touchline. My daughter and my wife are doubles’ partners.

It is a family sport where the parents can come, bring their children and play as a family.”
