Statistics stir up concern TASMIN CUPIDO
THE seizure of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs remain a problem in the Steenberg police precinct. This is according to crime statistics released by the national Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa on Thursday. These crime categories are heavily dependent on police action. A total of 39 cases of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition were opened from April 2011 to March 2012, compared to the 101 cases opened during the same period the previous year. From April 2011 to March 2012 a total of 1 352 cases of drug-related crimes were reported, compared to the 1 711 of the previous year. But despite the large number of reported incidents, the Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) has expressed its concern at the failure to get more guns, ammunition and drugs off the streets of these areas. “This is a huge concern for us and, to a great degree, this ties in with the community’s complaints that they cannot trust the police,” says CPF chairperson Kevin Southgate. “The police often call for the community’s assistance, but the community are afraid that their safety will be jeopardised.” Southgate adds that the decline in opened cases also coincides with the community’s sentiment that the police are not visible enough. Restoring the relationship and trust between the community and the police is high on the organisation’s priority list. “The police has categorically stated that their success is limited without the assistance of the community,” Southgate comments. “We have discussed this with the acting station commander and we are in unison that we need to identify the issues. We know there is not a lack of personnel or resources, so perhaps the problem lies in the management and deployment of resources.” Southgate also questioned the credi-

The statistics showed a total of 23 murders from April 2011 to March 2012, compared to 36 murders the previous year. “It is difficult to understand how this is possible, but if it is a true reflection, we are happy,” he says. “But if you look at the violence we have experienced, it is difficult to contextualise this and despite the silence, there is still ongoing gang activity.” He continues: “I am also concerned

that the statistics do not indicate the proper domestic violence numbers, as we know this is one of the precinct’s greatest concerns.” . In the Muizenberg policing precinct the total reported murders declined from 33 to 26, while assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased from 152 to 212. Burglary at residential premises remains a concern, despite a decline from 788 to 649 reported cases. The statistics also show a marginal decline – 36 to 32 – in cases opened for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

However, drug-related crime cases showed a small increase from 357 to 359. People’s Post contacted both Muizenberg police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Knapp, and Muizenberg CPF chairperson, Gerri Gordon, for comment. Both declined the opportunity to comment, saying they would first like to study the statistics.
