HOUSANDS of people from poorer communities are expected to attend a mass-meeting and “take over” Rondebosch Common recreational area during the weekend – despite no authorisation being granted for the gathering.

Although the City has warned that the meeting will be regarded as an illegal gathering and organisers may face criminal prosecution, plans for the occupation are being finalised and contributors are determined to go ahead, despite the repercussions.

Participants from Hanover Park, Pinati Estate, Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Lavender Hill, Hout Bay, Gugulethu, Athlone, Bonteheuwel, Delft and even Stellenbosch, will march from the Athlone Stadium to the common, for the three-day summit on Friday.

Topics to be covered during the summit includes a call for the development of open spaces in “the leafy suburbs”, the scrapping of rent arrears for those occupying council properties, as well as a demand for the City to transfer ownership of its rental units to the tenants.

Organiser Mario Wanza says the occupation of the Rondebosch Common is symbolic of all spaces in affluent areas which are underutilized while “people on the Cape Flats don’t have space to move.

“The coming together of civil society organisations reminds us of the days of united democratic action in taking forward the struggle. We have once again reached the point of building a united front, this time to rid ourselves of the divide between rich and poor.

The common is a stark reminder

of this barrier dividing us.

“It is a public open space which is hardly ever used by the rich to walk their dogs. This is happening while the poor are living on top of each other only a few suburbs away. Those with money have the luxury of acres of land at their disposal and it’s about time this spatial inequality is properly challenged,” he says. “Cape Town is still as divided as it was during the apartheid era”, Wanza continues.

“The poor live a different life compared to the those in privileged areas. These areas have hectares of manicured lawns, used for golf courses and other luxuries, while there is a desperate need for

land to be developed in order to provide housing for people who have been on waiting lists for years. It’s time that these areas are integrated.”

But while the organisers are finalising the details before the mass action, the City said that staff will be on site to discourage people from using the area illegally.

Richard Bosman, the City’s director for Safety and Security, says a meeting was arranged for Wednesday, so that organisers and the City can sit down and allow the applicants to motivate their application and answer questions.

“The group was between 15 and

30 minutes late. The panel assumed that they were not coming and continued with the afternoon’s proceedings. A letter was sent to the organisers on 19 January, indicating that no permission for the march and/or gathering had been granted.”

In addition to the summit, a march to the common will also take place on Friday.

The first participants will meet at the lookout hill in Rocklands at 07:00 that morning, and will walk through through Mitchell’s Plain to Manenberg. The group will meet with Heideveld, Bishop Lavis and Valhalla Park participants out-

side Manenberg police station, and proceed to the corner of Vanguard and Klipfontein Road, where Bonteheuwel and Langa participants will assemble.

Muslims will be excused to attend mosque. All participants will assemble at Athlone Stadium at 14:00.

That same morning, participants from Stellenbosch, Kraaifontein, Bloekombos, Elsies River and Ruyterwacht will gather at Goodwood station and march past the Epping market along Jan Smuts Drive to Athlone Stadium.

The group will then march to Rondebosch Common, and are expected to arrive at 17:00.

Bosman says that despite an application being made for the march, the City has informed the organisers that approval has not been granted.

No safety plans has been lodged with the police.

Wanza adds that Mayor Patricia De Lille’s “disinterest” in attending the summit shows that “not even she is interested in finding solutions to the plight of the poor.”

But De Lille responds that she had already committed to another engagement long before the organisers sent the invitation.

The Mayor’s Office advised the organisers that their request could not be considered until formal approval for the gathering had been granted in terms of the relevant legislation.

It was further pointed out that the threat to occupy state and privately owned land is fundamentally illegal and therefore could not be supported by the Mayor in any way.

Man drowns at Mnandi beach MELISSA PAPIER

THE body of Igshaan Ariefdien, who went missing on Wednesday at Mnandi Beach, washed ashore at Swartklip Beach during low tide on Sunday.

Ariefdien (27), was from Lost City.

Police divers were assisted by National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Strandfontein volunteers and law enforcement officers during the search.

Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, says on Wednesday at 19:12, eyewitnesses

reported seeing two men being swept out to sea on a boogie board. One of the men, Igshaan, disappeared in the surf but the second man, believed to be his friend, managed to reach the shore injured.

“At least six other swimmers (bystanders) got into difficulty trying to rescue the two men but all got to shore safely and were not injured,” says Lambinon.

“A law enforcement officer swam out to begin searching and he was joined by sea rescue craft and by the Skymed helicopter.

But despite an extensive sea, air and shore search, no sign of the man was found.”

Opportunities for matrics THE Mitchell’s Plain Education Forum (MPEF), Mitchell’s Plain Youth Unemployment Prevention Project (MPYUPP) and Mitchell’s Plain ANC Parliamentary Office will hold a Post-School Opportunities Seminar for all 2011 matrics, whether they passed or failed, on Thursday 26 January.

The seminar takes place at Spine Road High School hall from 15:00 until 17:30. Registration starts at 14:30.

Learners will be able to apply for learnerships, apprenticeships, skills programmes, bursaries and experiential learning opportunities.

EMPOWERING THE YOUTH: Yaseen Andrews, owner of Oasis Appliance Training Centre, is calling on matriculants of last year to join his centre, to learn basic electrical skills.

Andrews has over 12 years of experience in electrical engineering. The centre offers courses on how to fix faulty appliances. Chatting to People’s Post, Andrews says his reason for starting the training centre was the number of unemployed people in the area. “They can do something with their hands and become self­supporting. I want to share my skills with these people There is always work for people doing repairs,” says Andrews. He is renting premises at the shopping complex in Morgenster, which will serve as a workshop for the centre. Students who complete the course will receive a Competency Certificate. The three­month course entails a basic introduction to elec­ tricity, the uses and dangers of electricity and a theoretical and practical section. “The students will learn how to fix all domestic appliances and I will provide them with techni­ cal support after completing the course. All candidates will be interviewed and assessed before starting the course to see what their strengths and weaknesses are,” he says.

Dark deed by conman MELISSA PAPIER

RESIDENTS are urged to be cautious when it comes to exchanging their light bulbs for low-energy ones as a group of people claiming to work for Eskom are going around to home selling bulbs to residents.

People’s Post was alerted after residents in Lentegeur were tricked into paying for the extra bulbs.

Mymoena Pillay, of Lentegeur, tells People’s Post that last Tuesday she was ap-

proached by a man who said he was working for Eskom, exchanging light bulbs.

“I could only find two old light bulbs for the exchange and I asked how I could get more as I needed about six more for the rest of the house. He said I could contact him, as he was working for a commission.

The bulbs cost R10 (cost price), and he would get R4 for every unit sold. He said he would return the next day with a box of 10,” says Pillay.

The man returned the next day and Pillay paid him R100 for the box and he gave her a form as “confirmation”.

60 arrested in 72 hours

“My daughter read the form and noticed that there was no acknowledgement of payment for the globes. This made me suspicious and I called the contractor, who was shocked at what had happened.”

Pillay approached the chairperson of New Woodlands/Lentegeur West CPF subforum, Basil Coetzee.

Coetzee says: “I was informed and when Mymoena contacted the people named on the form they agreed to meet her. However, they said she could be charged with buying stolen goods. This was unacceptable as the person who sold the bulbs to her came across as a legitimate worker; Mymoena was not aware of the situation.”

The contractors met with Pillay and reimbursed her, apologising and acknowledging that the worker had acted “unlawfully”.

Suraya Gallows, one of the owners of Lite-line Electrical, the service provider contracted by Eskom, says the man was dismissed from his job.

“We will not tolerate such behaviour by any staff member representing our company. Residents with further complaints are welcome to contact us and we will follow up the matter,” says Gallows.

Coetzee cautioned residents to be vigilant. “Insist on a proper invoice or receipt when paying for these globes,” he says.

MITCHELL’S PLAIN Cluster executed several searches from 06:00 on Friday 20 January till 06:00 Monday 23 January which led to the arrest of 60 suspects for drug possession and two suspects for the possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On Saturday 21 January at about 11:50 members were doing a routine vehicle patrol in Lekkerwater Street, Tafelsig, when they noticed two suspicious men walking in the street.

The suspects were stopped and searched Police found 20 stoppe dagga. Two suspects, aged 39 and 45, were arrested.

Later the same day at about 16:30, crime prevention patrols at the corner of Swartklip and Lansdowne roads noticed a black VW golf with two men inside.

It was discovered that the vehicle had earlier been used in a business robbery in the Mandalay area.

The vehicle was searched and members discovered a 9mm pistol with four live rounds hidden.

The men, aged 30 and 31, were arrested.

They will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court today, on charges relating to the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

On Sunday 22 January at about 11:30 members were doing another vehicle patrol in Viscount Street, Rocklands, when they noticed a suspicious looking man in the street. The suspect was stopped and searched and members confiscated two 9mm rounds and one 7.65 live round.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was arrested.

He will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court.

The Mitchells Plain Police Management want to thank the Street Committees and Sector Sub Forums who joined the Mitchells Plain police in combating crime, and community members are urged to contact their respective sector commanders with information.

Family homeless after blaze MELISSA PAPIER

A WOODLANDS family has been left homeless, with the just the clothes on their backs, after a fire at their home.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning at 21 Helios Close, Woodlands. Six occupants of the house was left homeless – with three people suffering smoke inhalation and an elderly woman suffering severe burns to her arms, face and hands. She was asleep when the fire broke out. The fire also caused smoke damage at unit 19 Helios Close.

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, acting head of the Disaster Operations Centre, says the Disaster Risk Management Centre had “made the necessary arrangements for the provision of humanitarian relief aid”.

He said the cause of the fire is as yet unknown and the “author-

ities are investigating”.

Michael Pietersen, councillor for Wards 75 and 88, says the city’s building inspectorate was called upon to inspect the building and it was established that the fire had rendered the two units structurally unsound. An order has been issued to effect repair work.

“The City’s insurers have been notified and will initiate repairs to the units,” says Pietersen.

“The community liaison officer working on the CRU (Community Residential Upgrade) Project made arrangements for the victims of the blaze to be accommodated at the Haven Night Shelter nearby,” he added.

The family are in dire need of clothes, blankets, food and furniture to help rebuild their lives and their homes.

A TWO-day crime blitz has led to the arrest of 28 suspects by the Mitchell’s Plain Police.

In a separate operation on Tuesday afternoon, officers seized and impounded a badly injured pitbull terrier at a Primary School in

Mitchell’s Plain, after receiving a complaint of dog fighting. The dog was handed over to SPCA officials for impoundment and a case of animal cruelty and participation in dog fighting will be lodged against the owner.

During the operations police confiscated drugs and ammunition. Constable Jerome Voegt, spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, says on Tuesday at 16:00 members were doing a routine vehicle patrol in Perdeberg Street, Tafelsig, when they noticed a suspicious man in the vicinity of a known drug outlet. “The man was searched and officers found 60 packets of tik. The 28-year-old was arrested, facing a charge of possession of drugs,” says Voegt.

The following day at 13:00 officers were doing vehicle patrols in Mopanie Street, Eastridge, when they searched a man and found seven dagga stoppe and 10 mandrax tablets. A 28-year-old man was arrested.

Later the same afternoon at 14:20 another vehicle patrol in Atletiek Street, Beacon Valley, searched a man and nine live 9mm rounds were confiscated. The 23-year-old was arrested. Voegt thanked the street committees and sector sub- forums who are assisting the police in combating crime. He urged the community to remain vigilant and to contact their respective sector commanders with information.

Robbery suspects nabbed City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers apprehended several robbery suspects in Tafelsig, while also exposing a dog-fighting ring in the area.

On Sunday morning, 15 January, officers arrested four robbery suspects and recovered stolen goods. The officers were responding to a complaint from two members of the public who had been assaulted and robbed of a cellphone, money and a watch in the Wolfgat area near Mnandi Beach. Sax legend remembered GARY VAN DYK

THE musical legacy of sax man Winston Mankunku Ngozi comes to life on Sunday 29 January.

Music lovers will gathern at West End in College Road, Rylands, for Yahkal’ Inkomo, a tribute to the pioneering saxophonist who died in 2009.

While Yahkal’ Inkomo (the bellowing bull) refers to the 1968 recording by the sax man, recounting the slaughter of a cow. The other cattle in the kraal look on and cry for their kind. The bulls bellow in anguish and despair.The bellow of anguish from Mankunku was inspired by his treatment during the apartheid years, when he had to play behind

a screen in the City Hall, while a white man billed as Winston Mann mimed the saxophone parts on stage, because the white authorities found it unacceptable that black musicians should be acknowledged as capable of playing such “sophisticated” music.

Metaphorically, they were slaughtering black jazz musicians. Mankunku fell into despair. When he eventually recovered he released the album which still remains a milestone in the history of South African music. The song became an anthem for jazz musicians and jazz lovers.Yakhal’ Inkomo has become one of the biggest selling jazz albums of all time in South Africa. It was recorded with the Early Mabuza Trio featuring Mabuza, the legendary drummer, bassist Agrippa Magwaza, and pianist Lionel Pillay. The recording

has become one of the all-time classic South African jazz albums, re-released in 1975, 1985 and 1989, and since 1996 available on CD. At West End that legacy will be celebrated when sax men Barney Rachabane, Khaya Mahlungu and Mark Fransman illustrate just how far we have come because of that bellowing bull. Each sax player will be playing two songs of their choice and for the finale all three will join forces in a mega celebration of Mankunku’s legacy. Featuring with them will be George Werner on piano, Errol Dyers on guitar, Spencer Mbadu on bass, Victor Kula on sax and Ivan Bell on drums.

Minstrels Champs of Champs cancelled TAURIQ HASSEN

ALTHOUGH the minstrel season got off to a good start, organisers now face having to cancel the prestigious “Champs of Champs” after discovering that a holy day for Muslims takes place a week before the finals.

This means the competition dates will have to be rescheduled, but this creates a problem as the soccer action returns to Athlone Stadium on Saturday 18 February.

Moulood takes place on Saturday 4 February, which means that the competition will have to be postponed.

Kevin Momberg, chief executive for the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association, initially confirmed the new headache last week and said: “We are still looking to discuss the matter in detail, but it’s looking more likely that the Champs of Champs will have to be cancelled due to the venue not being available.”

Richard Stemmet, chairperson for the CTMCA, was not disappointed at the prospect of having the event postponed until next

year, as he felt that respecting the community’s holy days and events should be the “number one priority”.

“We are now setting up meetings with the different captains and generals in order to inform them about the postponement of the event, but generally we are happy and will respect the community,” says Stemmet.

Now confirmed, the final day of the minstrel season will be at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday 11 February, where events such as the group songs and exhibition marches will be held.

Normally, at the end of proceedings, the champions are named, with the coveted Carnival Trophy being handed to a deserving troupe, among many other prizes for events performed over recent weeks.

“That is really what everybody looks forward to and we end the minstrel season on a high and look forward to hosting yet another successful event next year,” Stemmet added. He confirmed that all teams under the CTMCA carrying marching permits will be allowed to parade their trophies through areas such as the historic Bo-Kaap area and Lentegeur in Mitchell’s Plein.

A family gathering of note THE Van Nelson family held its first family reunion on Sunday 18 December at Westridge Gardens, Mitchell’s Plain, which saw members come from all parts of Cape Town and abroad to meet the rest of the clan.

The reunion was initiated by Shahied van Nelson,who went to great lengths researching and contacting everyone.

We are trying to tracel family in Port Elizabeth, the US and England, so the next reunion will be even bigger,” she says.

Summer brings ‘swimmers’ ear With summer in full swing many people will suffer from the dreaded Swimmer’s Ear (Otitis externa).

This condition is a common infection affecting everyone, especially children and teenagers.

Gyms, swimming pools, dams and even the ocean can serve as a breeding ground for germs and bacteria and Swimmers’ Ear is brought on by excess water trapped in the ear canal after swimming or showering.

This moist environment provides the ideal environment for bacteria and fungi.

The moisture causes irritation an eventually breaks down the skin in the ear canal, allowing bacteria or fungi to penetrate. The condition can also be caused by eczema, vigorous cleaning with earbuds and inserting foreign objects such as pens or pencils into the ear.

They all increase the risk of damaging the layer of skin lining the ear canal and exposes this area to bacteria and fungi.

Symptoms appear within a few days of swimming and include itchiness, redness, swelling of the ear, pain when pressure is placed on the ear and puss draining from the ear.

This often painful condition is not contagious and can be treated with ear drops.

In severe cases, consult your GP.

Game takes stress out of back­to­school shopping IT IS back to school time again – that highly stressful period which not only puts a strain on the family budget but also sees harassed moms and dads struggling to tick off items on uniform and stationery lists in crowded stores.

IF there’s one “back-to-school” item that’s worth spending a little extra on, it’s a backpack.

According to both medical experts and those who specialise in selecting luggage for Game, unsuitable and poorly fitting backpacks filled with heavy books and stationery are one of the major causes of back and neck pain, poor posture and headaches amongst school children.

Game’s Jacqui Nel warned that heavy or poorly fitting backpacks make children lean forward, and have more serious long term implications such as poor posture, rounding of the shoulders and distortion of the natural curves in the middle and lower back.

Muscle imbalances result in muscle strain, muscle spasm and back pain that can last into adulthood.

Overloaded school bags also pull on neck muscles, contributing to headache, neck and arm pain.

The Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of the Free State found that a child carried a school bag for an average of 30 minutes per day.

Game’s message to parents is: . Make sure the backpack is appropriate to your child’s size and sits no more than 10cm above his waist to prevent strain on the shoulders. Adjust shoulder straps so that the bottom of the backpack is just above the waist – don’t allow your youngster to wear a backpack slung low over his buttocks. . . Choose a backpack with a moulded frame so that the weight of the filled backpack rests on your child’s pelvis instead of on the shoulders and spine. . The shoulder straps should be adjustable and both straps and the rear of the backpack should be padded for comfort. . Check the weight of the backpack once it has been filled.

Your child should not carry more than 10% of his body weight.

A heavier bag will make your child lean forward or to the side. . Buy bags with different sections to help distribute weight correctly. Pack the heaviest items closest to your child’s back.

My wife had an open wound on her leg for seven months.

All this time she could not sleep as the pain was excruciating.

Superstars at Mardi Gras 2012 LOCAL superstars Jody Williams, Ladylicious, The Rockets, Salome and Karen Kortjé will appear at the annual Mardi Gras, at the William Herbert Sports Ground in Wynberg.

Hosted by the Cape District Football Association, it is held over two weekends, starting on Thursday 26 January and rounding off on Saturday 4 February.

partner. The carnival was revived in 2006 after a 15-year absence and acts as a fundraiser for the football association’s member clubs.

Included in the entertainment are fun rides, various stalls selling

everything from food to knickknacks, and a tea garden and beer garden.

Strandfontein woman honoured MARK WARD

STRANDFONTEIN resident Gladys Bullock was amongst several former sporting greats honoured by the Western Cape sports community and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport as “legends” during a recent awards ceremony.

Bullock (56) is a highly respected dance coach and over the years she has won numerous awards for her role in uplifting disabled persons.

She pioneered the teaching of ballroom and Latin dancing to disabled persons in South Africa and is still active in promoting competitive dance sport amongst the disabled community.

In 2008 she received the SOS Children’s Village “Woman of Courage Award” for her perseverance and dedication.

Bullock was one of 33 legends honoured during the ceremony.

This was the seventh edition of the awards function, which took place just before Christmas at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

These awards honoured pioneers of differ-

ent sporting codes who have contributed to the transformation and development of their particular sport.

The recipients were recognised for their contribution, not only on a national level, but specifically to the Western Cape.

This year, legends in rugby, canoeing, dance sport, badminton, sailing and netball, were honoured.

Ivan Meyer, MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, was the keynote speaker at the event, and lauded the recipients for their contribution in upholding true sportsmanship.

“A legend is not a hero. A hero is someone who will be remembered for now but a legend is someone who will be remembered forever.

Today I am honoured and proud to be amongst you because you are true legends,” said Meyer.

“We lived through painful times when the colour of your skin prevented you from stepping out onto the sports field, no matter how much talent you were blessed with.

“We lived through a time where our own brothers and sisters left South Africa to go and play for other countries, which welcomed

them and saw only a great sporting star.

They didn’t see in black and white. Thankfully that time has passed.

“For this I am honoured to be in your presence.”

“Through your refusal to be put down by a racist political system, through your commitment to uplift your community and train your neighbours and their children, through your fighting and sporting spirit, we now live in a true democracy. A democracy that is colour-blind.”

M’Plain teacher raises R100 000 for schools figure in the name of the project was mainly to spark interest from the public.

“The R1-million was always just to catch the attention of the people. We knew we were never going to raise that in two months,” said Abrahams. “But I can safely say that raising over R100 000 between nine schools is a success. It wasn’t only about the money. It was about giving the schools an opportunity to be part of a project with humble beginnings.”

The principals of the schools agree the programme had value apart from the money that was raised.Achmat Chothia, principal at Glendale Secondary in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain, says that all of the money that was pledged to the school by the pupil’s parents has not been collected yet.“I think the timing wasn’t good. But we can’t tell the New York marathon to change its time,” said Chothia.

“The parents are still paying in money, but we hope to raise close to about between R20 000 and R30 000.”Over R33 000 was raised at Rylands High in Athlone, but school principal Kay Pillay believes that they could have reached the R100 000 mark.“Just before we were offered participation in this project this school raised R100 000 for the victims of Somalia and we had just concluded with that project when Irafaan approached us,” said Pillay. “So we took this on knowing that we had exhausted our learners and their parent’s contributions.”Pillay added that his school offered up incentives to the students who raised the most money. A MITCHELL’S PLAIN teacher has helped nine schools across Cape Town raise a total of over R100 000 by taking part in the New York marathon.

Irafaan Abrahams decided to run the world’s largest marathon last year to raise money to complete the construction of an unfinished building at Rocklands High School, where he teaches.

“Once the project started I decided that I couldn’t just focus on Rocklands High and that I needed to throw the net wider across the greater Western Cape,” said Abrahams.

“Teaching has been getting a bit of negative publicity over the last couple of years. As a teacher who is still passionate about teaching and about the upliftment of learners – especially in Mitchell’s Plain – I wanted to show the community that educators still have an important role to play in the inspiration of learners.” The schools which Abrahams selected to be part of the project are Rocklands High, Trafalgar High, Darul Arkam High, Rylands High, Glendale Secondary, Sea Point High, South Peninsula High, Chapel Street Primary and Parkhurst Primary.

The initial aim of the New York Marathon R1-Million Challenge, as Abrahams named the project, was for each of the schools to raise at least R100 000 each.

According to the school’s principal, Nadeem Hendricks, only R700 was raised.“The saddest part is that we didn’t have enough time to roll out the project and we didn’t do too well,” said Hendricks.

to us because then I can make the project really work for the school.”

Hendricks added that the money would probably be used towards a sporting bursary for one of the schools pupils.A Wynberg charity will also benefit from Abrahams’ exploits.The Ommiedraai, Itheko and Top Form running clubs managed to raise over R30 000 for Abrahams’ own charity, the Beitul-Aman old age home in Wynberg. According to Abrahams, the project will continue this year and, hopefully, until 2017 .“The 2012 project will again be the running of the New York marathon, where we will be hoping to assist 10 schools nationally,” said Abrahams. “We are hoping to have four educators join me this year in the race and we have put together a five-year plan to complete the big five of marathon running, one race per year, and raise funds for 55 schools by 2017.”
