Allegations rubbished LAILA MAJIET
CRIMINALS now have a better chance of getting rid of stolen goods thanks to a number of scrap yards open around the clock in Heinz Park. Lentegeur resident Nazeem Sedick says there are four scrap yards in Heinz Park which operate throughout the night. The 40-year-old man’s home was recently burgled. He says criminals stole taps, cables as well as carpentry tools and sold them at one of the scrap yards. He says despite having footage of the criminals, police initially suggested closing the case without making an arrest. However, an arrest was made on Friday. “I had laid a charge at the police station on the same day the breakin happened. I have even gone as far as taking the police to the house of the person who stole my things. Only after I threatened to take the matter into my own hands did police arrest the suspect,” Sedick fumes. Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Constable Jerome Voegt says: “This office can confirm that a 40year-old man opened a case of house break-in. The break-in occurred on 12 November at a house in Bamboo Street, Lentegeur. The 23-year-old suspect gained access to the premises by breaking open the garage door. Tools were stolen from the garage.” Cassiem Jirie, who works in his father’s scrap yard, disputes claims that they’re open around the clock.

“We are not open for 24 hours. We have had a scrap yard in Heinz Park for more than five years. We are open from 8:30 until 21:00,” he says. Jirie says police often come to search the place for stolen goods. “They come here often, but have never found any stolen stuff. We take in scrap metal and pay R1.20/ kg for light metal and R1.50/kg for heavy metal. We then take the scrap to a bigger scrap yard in Lansdowne,” he explains. Jirie was uncertain whether his father had a licence to trade. Councillor Michael Pietersen says he has received numerous complaints about scrap yard owners operating throughout the night. However, enforcing bylaws is challenging when people refuse to report problematic scrap yards, he says. “Law Enforcement cannot serve notices to illegal scrap yards or enforce the law if they don’t have the physical addresses of these places. People need to give us the addresses of the places they suspect to be buying presumed stolen goods so that we can take action,” he says. Pietersen says it is likely that 24hour scrap yards are also exacerbating the problem of cable theft in the area. “If the scrap yards are open all night, people have an opportunity to exchange the copper at whatever hour. However, this is something that is difficult to prove,” he says. People are being urged to report illegal scrap yards.
