SA’s own snooker champ Marchelino James (19), from New Woodlands, won the title as South African Snooker Championships in Johannesburg last year and is now set to head to China to partake in the World Championships. The trip will cost him more than R20 000 – money he does not have. He is therefore appealing for help to make his dream of competing internationally a reality. group of youth and community organisations hosted a career expo at The Church in Westridge, which was held on Saturday 15 June. Courtney Edwards, an Afrikaans teacher by profession, and Malcom Darvel, a youth leader at the church spearheaded the event’s organising team. They pair said they saw the need to bring expo’s of this nature to the people and “the scripture instructs them to go to the communities and serve”. “We came together with different Mitchell’s Plain community development groups and felt that it was laid in our hearts to organise something like this,” explained Darvel. He said they do a variety of other activities in the community to help take youth off the streets. When people show appreciation by attending the events in numbers, that always humbles them, he said. “It is always more than you expect and that excites us. We want to push more and more of these events,” he expressed. The church hall, which was almost filled to capacity, was abuzz with activity and interaction. This was as different colleges and development organisations were dishing out much-needed information to youth. The event was opened with a prayer and spoken word poetry session. Information pertaining to applications to tertiary institutions or how to apply for jobs was shared. Educational institutions participating in the event included Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), False Bay College and Northlink College. They were joined by job placement organisation Harambee.

Also, in attendance was member of provincial parliament Cameron Dugmore and director for EduBiz, Zaida Julius. EduBiz is an App that assists communities in empowerment and education. For him, this will not be a once off event; there will be more to come. He reckoned in order for youth to grasp something, it has to be recited to them continuously. For Edwards, the event was all about making information accessible to the youth. “For me, this was all about bringing it (the expo) closer to the youth. Some do not have money to travel to the colleges to ask all the questions they got to ask (today),” Edwards explained. Edwards said the expo is the result of them realising there was a need for career guidance and access to educational resources. He agreed with his colleague that the turn out impressed them and they appreciate the support from all partners that attended. In an interview with People’s Post Dugmore said events like these are needed in the communities and that they should be continuous. He said he was honoured to be part of the event and encouraged the youth to push harder and be positive. He said he was impressed with the turnout of the youth. “I am incredibly happy – an amazing turnout, such a lot of energy, such a lot of enthusiasm. Like I said, we have to do these career exhibitions in all of the 402 wards in the Western Cape,” Dugmore expressed. He said they, as leaders, have to be instrumental in bringing the change and it is not just about the now, but tomorrow. “What we did today is about the future, it is about grabbing opportunities and I thank everyone involved,” he said.
