Pagad on call in Kenwyn TAMMY PETERSEN
P
AGAD wants to establish a branch in Kenwyn due to strong support from locals after they visited three known drug dealers in the area on Wednesday night. Representatives from People Against Gangsterism and Drugs responded to desperate pleas from the affluent community on Tuesday by “visiting” the houses of the trio of alleged merchants, who are all youngsters under the age of 30. Osman Sahib, an executive member of Pagad, says the group responded to the “people’s call for intervention because of the escalation of drug trade in the area”. “We went to three houses but only one of the residents was home. The man, who lives in Block Road, is the biggest dealer in the area, and, after we applied pressure, he admitted it. He even showed us where the drugs were kept. He was given a stern warning and committed to stop what he was doing.” This is not the first time the Block Road property has come under the spotlight. The house was one of the main reasons 1 300 locals took part in an anti-drug march on Friday 25 February. The family, consisting of a man, his sister and her toddler, moved into the property on 1 January and, according to residents, have been “wreaking havoc” ever since. A woman who lives near the house says people are “absolutely sick and tired” of watching children, some even dressed in school clothes, “make transactions” at the gate of the neat-looking house. “They are destroying the lives of
our families and young people from all over the Lansdowne area. What kind of community would we be if we just sat back and turned a blind eye to what they are doing?” She says she and other residents have challenged the man, who is in his 20s, about his “wheelings and dealings before”. “All he does is laugh and say he only sells dagga. Does that make it alright? Besides, we all know that that isn’t the only drug being sold there. He knows exactly how we feel and we will keep on harassing him.” Locals claim that from as early as 05:00 until the early hours of the next morning, the house is like “a McDonalds drive-through”. “It’s busy from morning to night,” a resident with a clear view of the house says. “They drive up in their fancy cars, hoot, he comes out and takes their money, returns to the house and hands over the drugs. Even children knock at his door. You would swear he runs a legitimate business, that’s how open he is about it.” Another resident claimed the police do “absolutely nothing” to apprehend the alleged drug pedlars, as neighbours nodded their heads in agreement. “They knock at the door and if no one answers, they drive away. They are lazy. Where is the passion for upholding the law? Why are they so neverminded about something as serious as this? They search and seize with vigour in areas like Manenberg and Hanover Park. Why can’t our police do the same here?” Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Robert Lakey says the house has been under observation. “However, there has been a lack of information in recent months. We need proper, detailed information. No one has come to the station and shared this information with the
FIERY PERFORMANCES: “Burnt”, a new play by internationally acclaimed, awardwinning playwright Ian Bruce, opened at the New Africa Theatre at 43 Golf Course Road, Sybrand Park on 18 March and runs until 3 April. The production is 80 minutes long and has no interval. There is ample parking in front of and around the theatre. Performances are at 20:00 from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays at 15:00 and at 20:00. Ticket prices are R60. Pensioners, students and block bookings of 10 or more cost R45. Scholars pay R20. station commissioner or the Community Police Forum. However, this house is known to us and our eyes are on Block Road,” he says. The owner of the house, Linda Abrahams, says she threatened to evict the woman and her brother. However, the sister, who is the leaseholder, sometimes claims she is not involved with drug dealing, and at others totally denies that there are any drug-related crimes committed at the house. “I feel for her – she’s a mother. of gaining evidence in the investigation. It’s an ongoing operation and people should share their information with the correct authorities for it to be followed up on,” he explains. He advises people to forward any suspicious activity directly to the police. “What is the point of phoning Pagad? Procedure has to be followed and the correct law enforcement agencies have to be contacted. One group can’t solve the problem.”

her, which was a month ago, she told me she had put her brother out, but the neighbours say he’s back. “I even sent her a written warning advising her that she has until the end of March to get her brother out of the house.” Majidie Abrahams, the chairperson of the Lansdowne Community Police Forum, says it’s important for residents to understand that investigations are “not competed overnight”. “The house has been under surveillance, which is an essential part
