Flamingo ‘here to stay’ RESIDENTS living in Flamingo Crescent may be empowered in a bid to deter the community from crime.

An initiative has been proposed to equip residents with practical skills to improve the shack dwellers’ living conditions.

Businessman Shaboodien Roomanay initiated the idea and says while it is still in its planning stages, he is hoping for organisations and residents to come on board.

improved. Empowering their parents is always a good place to start.”

The settlement’s committee chairperson Winston le Roux says they welcome the idea.

“Over 80% of the 800 to 1 000 people staying here are unemployed. The youth who are unemployed will be interested in gaining skills to improve their lives.”

Career Junction has advised they may be able to assist in accessing funds from the Sector Education and Training Authority, Roomanay says. “There are lots of unemployed youth living in the informal settlement. We need to see how we can educate these youth and break the cycle of poverty.

We will start by doing an audit of the people staying in the settlement to determine their needs,” he says.

Ward councillor Anthea Green says the empowerment scheme it is an excellent idea.

She says: “You cannot go wrong by empowering people. However, people prefer handouts and it will be interesting to see how many of the residents climb on board.

“Residents staying at the informal settlement are a part of Lansdowne and if they wish to be empowered, we should assist as it may mean they will move on and out of Flamingo Crescent as they can afford a place of their own.”

Provincial Community Police Board chairperson Hanif Loonat says Lansdowne residents’ need to stop wishing away those living in Flamingo Crescent.

“We failed by condemning them. We failed to remove them. We now need to get the concerned leadership around a table and come up with a plan to integrate these residents into our community,” Loonat says.

“We need to change our tactics and help bet-

ter the lives of these people. If we leave them to live under the conditions they are currently, Flamingo Crescent will continue to breed criminals. We need to partner with government to come up with an empowerment project. We need to educate and train them in practical fields like carpentry.”

The squatter camp is to be reblocked, meaning the area will be organised into a cleaner and more liveable space.

This process is still in its planning stages.

“We hope to rearrange the shacks and put the toilets on one side to reduce the risk of a fire rapidly spreading through the settlement,” says Green.

When People’s Post visited the informal settlement, young men could be seen landscaping and tidying up the area in front of their home. Women were sweeping their stoeps while children played in the road.

Remember your spirit Dear reader, We are well into the first week of Ramadan, a holy month during which Muslims throughout the world go without food, drink and physical intimacies from sunrise to sunset.

The month is spent performing extra prayers (Taraweeh), remaining spiritually contemplative and repentant, and showing empathy and charity towards those less privileged.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and is known for its spiritual and health benefits.

Those who have fasted for many years will know how testing a journey it can be. Foregoing food and drink is the easier part.

Remaining steadfast in your spiritual resolve and resisting provocation is the hard part.

It is especially trying when, in addition to the usual demands of your professional and personal life, you are faced with extra challenges.

The beauty of being in a state of fasting though is that your body and mind automatically transcends base urges and, even if you wanted to lash out in anger at someone who has annoyed you, you invariably find yourself unable to.

Usually by the end of Ramadan, Muslims feel sad for a host of reasons.

Some regret not optimising the spiritual growth opportunity, others feel a sense of loss of the unity experi-

enced, and many undertake to uphold the practices of kindness and sharing.

My challenge as I progress through this month,will be to act selflessly and contain my emotions as I brace myself for one of the toughest challenges of my life; that of letting the little boy who has known me as his mother for five of his six years learn that he has another mother.

Two weeks ago, my foster son’s life was turned upside down when he met his birth mother, whom he hadn’t seen in four years.

She took him one side and quietly told him that she was his real mother and wanted to take him home with her.

He protested by drawing a picture of me, complete with long hair – as opposed to her short hair – and then showing her who his mother is.

To her telling him that the name he is known by was not his name, he promptly wrote down the five letters of his name. Although I was angry at the bad timing, I was very proud of my son for standing his ground and asserting his identity.

I was also proud of his confidence; and ability to spell and draw.

Sadly, he was traumatised after this meeting, constantly expressing his fear at being taken away from his

home and parents.

Through mutual agreement, a series of regular visits aimed at reuniting my son with his biological family has been scheduled, with the first one meant to have taken place today.

I was relieved when the social worker informed me yesterday that the visit had been cancelled.

But I know that future interactions are inevitable and that I cannot control the processes that may stem from them.

What I can do is protect my son from hurt, remind all parties concerned that decisions should be made in his, not the adults’ best interests and continue to provide a safe, loving home for him.

In a perfect world, I would have protected my son from some of his life truths, but as the older and responsible one, I know that life seldom goes according to plan.

As I look forward to Ramadan and the peace and strength it will bring me, I am also aware that it will be a crucial time for me to choose the correct responses to influence a positive outcome for the child entrusted to me. ’Til next time, go well!

Businesses hit by gang violence LAILA MAJIET

SHOP OWNERS in Hanover Park say the recent gang violence has slashed away at their business.

Wanie’s Takeaways, which has been around for the last 30 years, have had to cut down on costs as they reported a 50% loss in profit due to gang violence.

The store is opposite the taxi rank and is in the middle of where the shock and horror unfolds.

“People are scared to come out. I have tried everything to ensure my business stays afloat. I have even dropped prices,” says shop owner Ridwaan Richards.

“I have been forced to consider scaling down on labour, as well as renting out half of my store as it is quite big – all in a bid to try and cut costs.”

He says more visible policing is necessary to keep the gangsters at bay.

“Additional policing is necessary especially at the terminus,” says Richards.

An employee says gang violence has dealt a blow to business.

Speaking to People’s Post on condition of anonymity he says: “Gangsters are scaring customers away as they stand in groups on street corners close by.

“Customers fear being shot. Business has not been the same since gang violence swept through Hanover Park. Even the taxi associations are complaining as the gangsters operate close to the terminus.”

He adds that visible policing no longer acts as a deterrent for gangsters.

gang-related incidents have scared customers away.

A worker spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, fearing she would be targeted if she discloses her identity.

“While it hasn’t really affected our business all that much, when there are shootings our customers stay away and will only return once they are sure that gangsters have retreated,”she says.

“It is only then that everything goes back to normal. We have loiterers, but they are not necessarily gangsters and do not pose a threat to staff or customers.”

She says gangsters do not aim and shoot, but open fire at random.

“Gangsters are as young as 11,” she adds.

Traders operating at the taxi rank say they have had to close shop because of the gang violence.

Fruit and veg vendor Mogamad Noor Daniels, whose father has been trading at the terminus for the last 35 years, says they don’t know what to do.

“When there are shootings, the shops close their doors and we are left outside with nowhere to run. This is our daily bread.”

Newspaper vendor, Dawn Hughes (57) says she once had her own stall, but business has died down and she was forced to close down.

“The terminus is a hot spot for gang violence, yet government does not want to bring in the army.”

Anthony Daniels, chairperson of the Hanover Park Community Police Forum, says all the gangs met on Monday to discuss a peace resolution.

“All gangs felt that they need one month of cease fire,” he says.

Lights out at Athwood Primary LAILA MAJIET

PUPILS at Athwood Primary have been left out in the dark.

Fluorescent lights in classrooms were stolen at the school in February and the provincial education department is yet to replace them.

The Hanover Park school is one of 27 in the Western Cape facing closure.

Provincial education department spokesperson Bronagh Casey was unable to furnish People’s Post with any further details about this at the time of going to print.

Athwood Primary’s looming closure may

be saved as the public will be given an opportunity to express their concerns about the matter.

Principal Franklin Phillipus says he is hoping the upcoming public participation meeting will help keep the school open.

“We are currently drawing up a petition and urge the community to get involved,” he says.

Education minister Donald Grant cited a high incident rate of vandalism as one the reasons for his intent to close the school.

However, Phillipus says the school has not been vandalised or broken into for the last five months.

“The learner’s interest should be of para-

mount importance. In the interim learners are suffering. When it is dark teaching cannot take place effectively.

This environment is not conducive to quality teaching and learning.”

Casey says the intent to close the school “is to improve opportunities for the children concerned at the affected schools.

“The department would like to place them at schools that are better equipped to provide quality education.”

‘Lansdowne Road’ to remain unchanged LANSDOWNE has spoken, and most have given their support to one of the area’s busiest roads’ name remaining unchanged.

Should Mayor Patricia de Lille and Cape Town councillors give the go ahead, Lansdowne Road – between Wetton and Turfhall Roads – will keep its name.

However, sections of the throughway have been earmarked for renaming.

The stretch from Turfhall Road to Palmyra Road could become Imam Haron Road.

Imam Abdullah Haron was an outspoken activist who was widely re-

spected for his condemnation of apartheid.

He was detained on charges relating to terrorism in May 1969 and was tortured and killed four months later.

From Swartklip Road to Wetton Road may be renamed Jeff Masemola Road.

Masemola was one of the founding members of the Pan Africanist Congress and, as a teacher, exposed many young minds to politics and the injustices of segregation.

Charged with conspiracy to commit acts of sabotage, he was imprisoned on Robben Island for 26 years. He was released in 1989 and was killed a year later in a car crash.

The section from Baden Powell Drive to Swartklip Road could be renamed Govan Mbeki Road.

The father of former president Thabo Mbeki, he was a president of the ANC and spent 23 years on Robben Island for terrorism and treason.

The health building at Glasgow Caledonian University is named after him in recognition of his commitment to political change.

Last week the City of Cape Town finalised a series of proposed new street names for De Lille’s consideration.

In an extensive public participation process earlier this year, residents were asked to comment on the proposed renaming of 24 streets, two civic

centres and a footbridge.

The Naming Committee’s chairperson and Mayoral Committee member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Brett Herron, says almost 19 000 comments were received and in many instances council has agreed to leave certain names unchanged.

“We are determined that the renaming process is one that leads to an inclusive Cape Town, and one that it is free of the divisions that have regrettably characterised similar processes in other metros in South Africa,” he says.

Once De Lille has studied the proposal, the suggested changes will be submitted to council for approval.

New Honda CR­V headed for SA SINCE its launch in 1995, more than fivemillion Honda CR-V units have been sold globally and the forthcoming generation sports a new design as it hopes to build on its predecessors’ success.

South African fans of the Japanese SUV will have to wait until October or November to get behind the wheel.

The initial range gives a choice between two-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power remains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine, at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions for the manual version have been reduced from 171g/km to 153g/km.

The i-VTEC petrol sees marginal power and torque increases to deliver 115kW and 192Nm, while emissions have fallen from

192g/km to 174g/km.

In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has a CO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of range sports all-wheel drive with hill assist and descent control.

Compared to the previous generation CR-V, the new model takes on a more assertive stance with a bold front design. The bumper is joined by a horizontal grille and deep-set headlights. The model’s signature vertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remain but feature a three-dimensional style.

The headlights feature LED daytime running lights.

Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says: “The CR-V has always been a car for every occasion. It can be both casual and formal, but the appearance must always convey solid-

ity and reliability.”

The length and height of the SUV has been reduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively compared with the current model, without reducing interior space.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot capacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to 1648 litres and with the seats folded up, boot capacity is rated at 589 litres.

The load length has been increased by 140mm to 1570mm, while the height of the load lip has been reduced by 25mm making it easier to load heavy or awkward items.

Keyless entry and a power tailgate have been added to enhance its practicality.

The centre console sports a five-inch display which controls audio, telephone and navigation systems (where fitted).

Beltbag gets green light MERCEDES-BENZ’S inflatable seatbelt strap, first seen on the ESF 2009 experimental safety vehicle concept, will go into production, the automaker announced.

The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Beltbag, will be made available in a “luxuryclass model” Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.

The strap is designed to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by reducing the strain placed on the ribcage.

BREMBO, the world leader in the design and production of high-performance brake systems for major car, motorcycle and commercial vehicle makers and for the aftermarket and racing, has landed in South Africa with its aftermarket products.

Brembo will partner with Sparepro as its official aftermarket distributor. As part of the long-term agreement with Sparepro, which has a network throughout southern Africa, Brembo hopes to achieve a 20% market share in the premium aftermarket with brake pads, callipers and discs.

The company said it is intent on placing its experience and expertise at the service of the parts market.

Once the vehicle’s crash sensors detect an impact, the airbag control unit triggers the airbag deployment and the multilayered strap inflates to nearly three times the normal width to better distribute the forces acting on the passenger.

It is used in exactly the same way as a conventional seatbelt.

Karate kid wins gold LIAM MOSES

A YOUNG Rondebosch East martial artist has beaten out competitors from 36 other countries to win a major international tournament.

Farouk Mayman won the under-13 division at the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Florida on Saturday 14 July – just five years after taking up the sport.

Mayman, who attends Cannon Creek in Pinelands, says he enjoys the sport because it’s as much about resolving differences, as it is about fighting. “It’s not about hurting your opponent, it’s about making peace with your opponent. When you’re done fighting, you don’t go back and say I’m going to hit you,” comments Mayman.

“The only way to test yourself is to fight other people.”

The 13-year-old adds that the sport offers something offer to those not interested in the full contact or semi-contact fighting. “There are different divisions. If you are not good at fighting then you can be good at kata or you can be good at breaking. They also have high kick, where there is something that’s really high and you have to jump and kick it.”

His excitement at having been crowned champion is evident.

Mayman first got involved with the sport because his older sister was participating.

He trains at his dojo twice a week and twice a week at home, while also take participating in hockey and waterpolo at school.

Two years ago Mayman finished third in the US Open and he believes this experience gave him confidence to win this time. “The last time I was so nervous that my legs were shaking. I was confident, because I saw what they did and I knew what they are about,”

“I fought people before and I knew their style of fighting. Other people were just staying back, they didn’t want to go in and fight and that’s how points were lost. So each time I made them go back, they lost points. It comes from confidence – if you have confidence you will win.”

The martial artist hopes to continue with the sport for the rest of his life, and eventually open his own dojo.

THE Pinelands Athletic Club celebrates its 75th anniversary with several events in August.

On Sunday 5 August the annual McKenna Scott 10km road run and 5km fun run starts and finishes at the Lower Oval in Pinelands. The club also hosts a cocktail party at the clubhouse for exchairmen, vice presidents, sponsors and VIPs on Tuesday 7 August.

They are also arranging for as many members as possible to run in the annual Don Lock 8km road race in Claremont on Sunday 19 August. Each Pinelands runner will be given a specially designed balloon to run with and finger snacks will be served to all members after the race. THE long-awaited battle between Ajax Cape Town and Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium.

The match, which had been eagerly anticipated by both teams fans since its announcement, was played in wet and rainy conditions. This, however, did not stop fans from donning their team’s colours to the match to watch the somewhat disappointing match.

Ajax drew first blood when substitute, Alcardo Van Graan, chipped in a cross, catching Manchester United’s solid defence off-guard.

The 19 time English league champions waited until the 93rd minute of stoppage time to spoil the Urban Warrior’s party, when another substitute, Bebe, skilfully slotted in the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Ajax proved their worth against a Manchester United team missing big names such as Wayne Rooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic.

Khama Billiat was one of the stand out performers for Ajax, giving United’s young left back, Tyler Blackett, a tough day at the office.

The Zimbabwean winger, who was named man of the match, had the Cape Town outfit’s first real chance, striking the ball just wide of the right hand post. Minutes later the winger tore United’s midfield, which featured experience campaigners in Micheal Carrick and veteran Paul Scholes, to shreds before losing his footing and the opportunity was lost.

Chances were few for United, with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez getting on the end of few chances missed in front of goal. Winger Antonio Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajax stubborn defence stood tall. A close range

“It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s why we made a number of substitutions to ensure that we keep our players fresh, but we will continue to work hard on the training field so that at the start of our season, we can continue where we left off,” says the proud Stekelenburg.

Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was impressed with Ajax’s performance when he told MUTV: “They caused us a few problems and we decided to make changes and bring on the younger players, but it was a very competitive game.”
