LIGHT THE WAY: The City of Cape Town’s 2011 switchingon of festive lights on Sunday 4 Decem ber had Capeto nians awestruck. Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille of ficially kicked off the festive season by switching on the lights, watched by more than 80 000 peo ple. There were LED screens along Adderley street to ensure all present got a good view of the event. All set for softball excitement LYNN PRINS

THE Softball Junior Women’s World Championship has one day to go before the first ball gets pitched. People’s Post – being the media partner – will be covering the event and has been involved from the start carrying profiles on individual players, and introduced the South African side and the management team. The JWWC, which consists of 16 teams and lasts just under two weeks, starts Wednesday 7 December with an opening game between two African countries, South Africa and Botswana. Botswana took out time to have a training session yesterday morning. Participating teams are South Africa, US, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rica, Chinese Taipei, China, Argentina, Russia,

Germany, Botswana, Brazil, Czech Republic, and Zimbabwe. Supporters had an opportunity of watching world class Softball during the warm-up games on Thursday evening, when New Zealand played local teams Glenthorn A’s and Falcons-Normies. The warm-up games continued over the weekend with great support, when South Africa, US, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia played each other. New Zealand fell short losing 4-2 against Japan, South Africa lost 13-0 to Canada, and US beat Australia 7-2. On Saturday a minor error occurred when the technical team found fault in the lights of the B field. The game, between South Africa and Canada, was to have started at 19:30 but was postponed until Sunday. “We had a small problem, but we can now safely say that all slight problems have been resolved. It’s

important that we have warm-up games in terms of field facilities, and warm-up games are relevant to team preparations too, so playing faults can be dealt with,” said Noore Nacerodien, head of the Local Organising Committee. “Being the first such event in Africa, the LOC and I are confident that we will host an event of unprecedented quality. This event will put us in good stead for hosting any future international events in Cape Town”, he added. People’s Post caught up with US coach Paula McGovern, whose team played against Australia on Saturday. When asked about the field conditions at Turfhall and the stadium, she said: “My team and I are happy to be here and the city should be proud to have a world class Softball venue like Turfhall.” When asked whether New Zealand would follow in the footsteps of their rugby team

and fill their sport cabinet with the JWWC trophy, Coach Venita Hokai commented: “I have a team full of youngsters that can play in the next world champs, but they will have to be on top of their game if they want to win the tournament. However, I will be happy if we can end up in the top six”. Nacerodien also delivered a message to the teams and everybody who helped organise the event. “From my side I wish everyone best of luck. The community of Belthorn has been superb, and they are ready to welcome the world to their area.” Tickets cost R20 per day from Computicket. For more information visit the website at www.jwwc2011.co.za Stand a chance of winning a set of double tickets with People’s Post. To enter, SMS your name, contact number and ID number to 34586 by 11:00 on Wednesday 7 December. SMSs cost R1,50.

Creating jobs, touching lives – it’s a gift THIS week, Proudly South African (Proudly SA) features essay GIFTS and the role the company plays in making a real difference in touching lives and creating sustainable jobs in South Africa. “In May 2006 essay GIFTS secured its first order from the City of Johannesburg for 5 000 gifts and this created temp jobs for 50 people, in an area with an 80 percent unemployment rate,” says Beatrice Delpierre, operations director for essay GIFTS. “We delivered on our promise to the City and presented them with world class gifts in time for the 2010 World Cup hand-over ceremony in Germany.” The company achieves its success by facilitating business opportunities between the formal economy, corporate entities and government clients and the informal sector. “Specifically, we work with rural crafters and young designers in the corporate, promotional, complimentary gifting and the conference accessories industries,” says Delpierre. “We act as a bridge between our clients and our partner factories and manage the process to ensure

that these small businesses deliver a world class product on time, every time. Our aim is to assist specifically disadvantaged communities that lack access to the market and don’t know how to engage in the business economy.” She says they also promote the meaningful integration of low technology, hand-made and lowcost products into an economy that today competes with Chinese products. The integration requires expensive technology and is mass produced. The main task of essay GIFTS is to motivate the clients and market to invest their promotional budgets in the partner factories. Although locally produced gifts can be more expensive than imported items, the additional cost of producing gifts not only in South Africa, but specifically by rural producers, provides the client with a valuable brand building opportunity – namely, demonstrating that they support employment creation. This in turn assists with building their social capital and goodwill among their stakeholders. She says one of the biggest challenges for essay GIFTS has been to access the market, as the industry

She added that anyone could

achieve any dream with “hard work, passion and believing in yourself”. “But the biggest reward in life is not the money you make but the journey you take to become successful. We also believe in the words of Anton Rupert: ‘The more you give away, the more you will receive.’ essay GIFTS is an example of a business that was started with little cash and has since worked on contracts with some of the top brands in the world.”

Positive plan to counter Aids ON World Aids Day Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA) reinforced its commitment to fighting the HIV/Aids pandemic and Gender Based Violence (GBV). The HIV/Aids rate in Southern Africa is the highest in the world. In South Africa, 900 people die from the virus every day, and at least 10% of orphaned children live in child-headed households. In most cases, children are victims of abuse. IRSA runs a “Positive Living” programme aimed at prevention, care and support for people living with HIV/ Aids and victims of abuse. “We host a number of activities throughout the year such as work-

shops and weekly support groups for those affected by and infected with HIV and also offer counselling for health and social problems,” says Shanaaz Ebrahim-Gire, IRSA media manager. “A hundred beneficiaries attend weekly sessions where they receive support and access to education. Nutrition is important and all beneficiaries are encouraged to start food gardens.” She says partnerships are critical in the fight against HIV/Aids and GBV. “Therefore, IRSA partners with local government, NGOs and UN agencies like UNAIDS for different projects.” For more information, email sherifa@islamic-relief.co.za.

“If they don’t protect us, who can?” asked Sumaya Haffejee after she and her son, Enver Smith (34), were allegedly mishandled. It all started when Smith’s girlfriend laid a charge against Smith for domestic violence. Smith allegedly assaulted his partner and broke her arm. Haffejee said: “I saw police and Enver’s girlfriend at his wendy house in my yard and then they asked him to come out. “He told them to wait as he was using the toilet. They then ripped the door open and I heard my son screaming that the officers were beating him up.” Haffejee says her son was naked at the time. “They were so aggressive with him and they wanted to take him out to the van while he was naked.” Haffejee said she tried to tell the officers to let her son dress but they initially refused. “There were children and people standing around and I wanted to cover him up so I asked them to let him put on some clothes. That’s when the officers pushed me away, swore at me and pulled a gun on me. They treated us like animals,” she says. Station Commander of Grassy Park Police Station Colonel Leroy Nolan said Smith resisted arrest and therefore officers had to use force to arrest him. “When officers and the suspect’s girlfriend arrived he refused to open the door. “The officers then opened the door and told him they were there to arrest him and he said he wasn’t going to be arrested. A scuffle broke out between the officers and the suspect.” According to Nolan, Haffejee refused to let her son be arrested and the officers had to push her away in order to get

Smith to the police van. Haffejee claims she later received a call saying her son had been admitted to Victoria Hospital with bruises to his wrists, back, chest, face, neck and bleeding from the ears. “I believe they beat up my son after he was arrested, at the cells. There was not a scratch on him when he left my house,” says Haffejee. “These police officers say he sustained the injuries when he ‘resisted arrest’ but it’s not true, and even if he did resist arrest, that doesn’t give them the right to beat him up so badly.” Nolan said: “The suspect’s mother was trying to stop police from arresting her son and that is how she sustained some of the bruises she had. She was supposed to be arrested because that is against the law.” Smith is currently at Pollsmoor Prison awaiting an appearance in court for a bail application. Haffejee has opened a case of assault against the police officers involved. Nolan said the case against the officers would go to court and if they were found guilty, they would be reprimanded. Smith’s girlfriend refused to speak to People’s Post about the incident. According to Jacque Sibomana, of the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) anyone who had been abused by their partner needed to lay a charge against the suspect. “They need to go to the police station, then they will be asked whether they feel in danger. “In most cases, if there are obvious signs of abuse, police will immediately go out and arrest the perpetrator. In other cases, police first have to investigate the incident. “In this incident the woman’s arm was broken so it gave police ample reason to arrest him immediately.”

Young wife battles deadly disease REYANA STEYN

A

YOUNG woman and her family’s lives have been turned upside down for nearly a year after she was diagnosed with XDR (extensively drug resistant) TB. Andaleeb Rinquest-January (27), a bubbly, strong and independent woman, was in her prime when she discovered she had a rare form of TB which is life threatening, in February. Since her diagnosis it has been an uphill battle for her family and friends. Andaleeb’s health deteriorated as she lost her appetite. She has to take 10 tablets a day, is bed-ridden, needs 24-hour care and weighs only 30kg. “It has been a difficult to see my eldest daughter like this,” says her mother, Shanaaz Rinquest. “It all began in November when she had a bad cough. She regularly saw the doctor and the diagnosis would always be flu/cold or throat infection, followed by a course of antibiotic treatment, but she never got better.” In February Andaleeb noticed a growth under her armpit. The gland was drained in a surgical procedure but the growth returned. “This prompted doctors to take samples of the gland and send them for testing. The test returned positive for TB. Andaleeb was then put on firstline drugs in the treatment of standard TB. “She was feeling tired all the time and resigned from her job, losing her medical aid.”

Victoria Hospital doctors discovered she was resisting the standard treatment. More tests were done and the results showed strains of resistant TB cultures. Andaleeb was then classified as having MDR (multiple drug resistant) TB. Doctors said that she would have to be on second-line drugs for two years and also receive a daily injection at the clinic for six months. She was discharged from the hospital to be treated at home. Riedaur Rinquest, Andaleeb’s brother, says the family watched as Andaleeb’s health deteriorated. “Her appetite decreased to such an extent that she wasn't consuming much needed daily nutrients. After a collapse she was sent to Brooklyn Chest Hospital. This is when it was determined she was a pre XDR (extensively drug resistant) TB case.” The family tells People’s Post that this is where Andaleeb’s health took a turn for the worst. “She no longer felt positive with this news and from then on her condition became much worse,” says her mother. “She was in a ward where three patients died and Andaleeb had to see all this. We then made a tough decision and took her out of the hospital to care for her at home. It was really difficult journey,” says Shanaaz. “She needed 24-hour care as her medication needs to be given at certain times. During the day I would care for her and at night her husband did.” Refaat January, Andaleeb’s husband, investigated and he discovered that the UCT Academic Pri-

vate Hospital was the only private medical facility able to treat these TB cases. Andaleeb was examined by professors who said she needed to be hospitalised for six months. That would cost R120 000 upfront and R120 000 each month she is at the facility. The Rinquest and January family managed to gather the money, but now they need to continue to raise R120 000 a month. She has been admitted in UCT for two weeks now, and the family say they are hopeful she will get better.

“I am looking forward to the day Andaleeb is cured and can walk out of here,” says Refaat. “I need to be strong and positive for her.” Refaat says Andaleeb seems to be on a slow road to recovery. The newspaper visited Andaleeb’s facebook page and although she has a life-threatening illness, she was posting positive messages encouraging people not to feel sorry for her. In a bid to raise the funds the family has set up various shows. They are also aiming for a minimum of

about 2000 people to assist with a donation booklet of R60 per month for the six-month period. The Rinquest and January family appeal to all to assist to save Andaleebs life. They would also like to thank everybody for there support so far. Anyone who would like more information about Andaleeb, the variety shows or would like to support in anyway should call Refaat on 082 301 7733 or Riedaur on 084 311 1163, or visit the facebook link: Support Andaleeb RinquestJanuary.

AFRIFORUM has launched a website where the public can send messages to the President’s personal e-mail address to object to the Protection of Information Bill. The public can visit www.thebillstopshere.co.za and lodge their objections. The website forms part of the organisation’s fivepoint action plan to encourage the public to get involved in the battle for freedom of information. Ernst Roets, deputy CEO of AfriForum, says that as this is a judicial process, the battle against the Bill has to a great extent rested in the hands of opposition parties; however, the status quo is changing and the major battle is starting now. “Even if this means that we have to take this matter to the United Nations, we will not rest until we have succeeded in putting an end to this legislation.”

The e-mails will be sent as a petition to President Jacob Zuma’s personal e-mail address, as well as to that of his assistant. Petitioners only have to fill in their details on the site in order to take part in this protest. AfriForum intends to use this petition as part of legal action against the Bill and, if necessary, to take it to the United Nations. Members of the public can also contribute R10 towards the cost of the legal action by SMSing the word “FORUM” to 38655. “It seems most members of the ruling party simply ignore the public’s appeals in this regard. As soon as the President adds his signature to this document, it will become the most devastating piece of legislation of the last 20 years. Should we have to flood the President’s e-mail address with complaints from members of the public, we will do so with the greatest of pleasure,” Roets says.

LIGHT THE WAY: The City of Cape Town’s 2011 switchingon of festive lights on Sunday 4 December had Cape tonians awestruck. There were LED screens along Adderley street to ensure all present got a good view of the event. Amazing acts such as Hip Hop Pansula, Jozi, Larry Joe, Karen Kortje, Alistair Izobell and Loukmaan Adams took to the stage. Photo: Bruce Sutherland

New kids rocking the block TAURIQ HASSEN

THE Santam District Six Entertainers may be new kids on the block, but they are certainly proving a force to be reckoned with. Last week, People’s Post featured one of the oldest minstrel teams, in the form of the Pennsylvanian Crooning Minstrels, “Top team aiming for top prize (Tuesday 29 November)”, which incorrectly indicated they were the reigning champions. However, the real winners were in fact Santam District Six Entertainers, who walked away with the 2011 Carnival Trophy for the second time in their six-year history. Early in 2005, a group of individuals with over 50 years of minstrel experience behind them saw the need for a minstrel team to be originated in the very place the minstrels culture began, District Six. “The vision of this team is to become one of the best entertaining klopse cultural groups promoting the klopse culture and lensuring a klopse legacy,” says Mallick Laattoe, owner of the troupe. In their first year, the troupe “rewrote the history books” by becoming the first troupe to walk away with the highest honours in their debut competition. The team obtained first prizes in English and Afrikaans Moppie, Junior Drum Major, Juvenile Sentimental and Best Board. They received second prizes in English Combined Chorus, Adult Drum Major, Grand March Pass, Exhibition, Juvenile Combined Chorus, Minstrel Song and Adult Sentimental.

They also received third prizes for Afrikaans Combined and Senior Best Band. In total, the troupe clinched 14 of the 16 trophies up for grabs, justifying the statement, “Our record speaks for itself”. For around four years, the troupe could smell the sweet scent of victory, but failed to lift the coveted Carnival Trophy, always ending up second – until last year. But they did walk with first prize in six various categories in the last six minstrel competitions. “We set ourselves attainable benchmarks and through consistent communication and networking, this was achievable,” says Laattoe. Over the past year, the minstrel troupe has become involved in social upliftment of the society, particularly the youth. It aims to provide youngsters with viable alternatives to the social ills facing the community. The troupe successfully launched a school for those interested in brass bands, and this now has more than 80 members. Speaking on the upcoming competition, Laattoe said: “The task ahead is much greater, being crowned champions and maintaining the statue in the klopse fraternity is a daunting task, but we are up for it.” Santam District Six Entertainers are based at the Bo-Kaap Civic Centre and are firm favourites with the local residents. “We are 100% geared up for the coming season. “Our slogan is ‘Impossible is nothing D6’ and this we emulate throughout our preparation and during the carnival,” Laattoe concluded.

Bright future seen for youngsters LILLIAN AMOS

T any graduation event you’d expect a certain level of excitement and delight, but for pre-schoolers and parents from the League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) pre-schools’ graduation was an extra special day. Six low-vision and blind children will be facing a whole new adventure when they head for “big school” next year, after graduating on Wednesday 30 November. For one five-year-old boy it is an even bigger milestone because he will be going to a mainstream school. Daryn Jordaan, who has low vision caused by his Albinism, is joining the Grade R class of Fairview Primary at the beginning of next year. His proud mother, Melonique Jordaan (20), beamed at her son on the stage as he received his certificate. The family moved to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth last year and since then Daryn has attended the LOFOB pre-school for the blind. “It has been difficult, I was young when I was pregnant with Daryn, I was scared, I didn’t know how my family would react or how the community would react because at the end of the day Daryn was different.

PROUD: Daryn Jordaan will be going to Fairview Primary next year. Pictured here is Daryn with his mother, Melo nique Jordaan. Then I realised that I have to be strong for his part,” said Melonique. Asked how she felt about Daryn going to a mainstream school, she said: “I’m worried how he will fit in at the school. He will meet new children, how will they treat him? How will the teachers treat him? I’m thinking about all these things.” Philip Bam, executive director of LOFOB, says the staff have prepared the children well. “We strive to lay the foundation for them to become independent adults. We want them

to contribute and add value to society.” Bam said low vision and blind children don’t often go to mainstream schools. “We give parents the option of sending their children to mainstream schools. Most of the time the schools aren’t resourced but LOFOB gives them support, such as training teachers and advising them.” Fairview Primary principal Aubrey de Wet says they have had many experiences over the years with children with different needs. “We have a special class where we have trained teachers who specialize in children with barriers. Daryn, however, will go to the mainstream grade R class and we will assess him from there. We have psychologists and staff who come in and do the necessary assessments. “Even if Daryn needs a special curriculum, we will do our best to make him comfortable.” De Wet said the school started special classes 10 years ago. “It was difficult but they have made a lot of progress.” Asked how being in a mainstream school would benefit a low-vision child, Bam said: “It helps with integration. The children need to know that they are not different from society and for the rest of the learners at the school it is a chance to see that a low-vision child can progress and achieve just as much as the rest of them”.

Santa and his cart LILLIAN AMOS

A RETREAT man is known as the Santa of his community, but instead of the usual sleigh, he depends on his cart. Edward Killian (55) started a stall in front of his home in Twelve Avenue three years ago. He collects items that people throw away and sells them. But when the festive season draws near, he takes his cart and collects toys for underprivileged children in his community. “There are a lot of parents who cannot afford to buy presents for their children and there are also a lot of parents who don’t even care about their children. Other kids don’t have parents. I’m just trying to make these children happy,” he says. The cart is made of wood and decorated with trinkets such as Santa dolls, Christmas decorations, flags and dolls, such as Barney and Winnie the Pooh, that he has collected

over the years. With a BMW badge and the number plate CA 67, the cart is so eye catching that one can not help but take a second look. On Fridays and Saturdays he sells his “collections” to provide food for his wife, children and grandchildren and Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays he walks around Meadowridge, Bergvliet and Constantia to collect toys. Last year, Killian made sure he was part of the World Cup ceremonies and took off with “everything”. “I walked all the way to Rondebosch, slept over there for the night and made my way through to town early the next day. I wasn’t going to miss the biggest event, and my cart carried me through.” Killian says he wants to give the children of his community a party in his yard on Thursday 20 December, when he will be handing out the gifts. He has appealed to people to do-

dog would take away their income. Back home, there is a mom and she will continue to be exploited. If there is no market for pups such as these, then more and more people will accept help to sterilise their animals when it’s offered.” She says although Tails recently managed to sterilise many Eerste Rivier dogs and cats, they were turned away by countless people with huskies, pitbulls, boxers, fox terriers and “braks” because the owners said they needed the puppies for their own survival. “There is hope, but we have to search deep and work hard to find it,” said Cox. Other ways to help include donations, or you could sponsor a sterilisation. Tick collars, kennels, food, leashes, collars and blankets are always in demand. African Tails services Du Noon Township (near Table View), Joe Slovo Township (near Milnerton), the Vissershok dump site (on the N7) and Eerste Rivier. Unlike the SPCA, they do not have premises where the animals stay in kennels. Michéle Kruger, of Kirstenhof, has been fostering dogs since March. She says the group even provides food if one cannot afford it. Kruger admits it is difficult to part with the foster animals, but knows that she is helping more to find good homes this way. Reading the group’s newsletters is heartbreaking. But among the tragedies there are moments of hope. General manager Lola Cox says: “South Africa is full of little pockets of areas where there is untold human and animal suffering. There are also places where people and animals lead blissful lives, but Eerste Rivier is not one of them. There is a massive dog and cat overpopulation and many live below the pellet-line.” Cox adds: “Despite years of continuous work in these areas, we’re nowhere near to having any of them fully under control. We know that these are just four specks on the globe where we work fervently and feverishly to alleviate the plight of the animals and that the problems of mass overpopulation, neglect, suffering and abuse are widespread.” Cox said she dreamed of being able to have these areas cleaned up “so we can spread our work further afield, to areas where no animal welfare assistance is currently rendered”. She warns people not to buy puppies from people on the side of the road. “When help is offered to get the mother sterilised, the help is refused as a sterilised

Keep sewers running smoothly THE City of Cape Town incurs a cost of around R60 million a year to clear sewer blockages.

GRAND OCCASION: Yesterday (Monday), Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille (far left) unveiled the new name for Oswald Pirow Street, which will now officially be known as Christiaan Barnard Street. On the right are Barnard’s children Deidre Visser, Armin Barnard, Lara Barnard and Christiaan Barnard Junior. Photo: Lulama Zenzile

As it has a limited budget which is divided according to needs, the money spent on repairing and clearing blockages could rather be spent on other community requirements. Blockages are generally caused by foreign objects such as sheepskin, sheep skull, shoes, clothing, cutlery, newspapers, sanitary towels, disposable nappies, tyres and many

more items that are disposed of via toilets and manholes into the sewer on a daily basis. Foreign objects are either flushed or dumped deliberately into the sewer system. This causes the system to block because it was not designed for these items, resulting in sewage overflowing into the streets and illness caused by waterborne diseases due to exposure to such unhealthy environments. This also, inevitably, causes damage to municipal infrastructure. In an attempt to reduce or

eliminate future blockages, the City’s Water Pollution Control Department encourages residents to ensure that all foreign objects are disposed of in refuse bins and skips. To ensure that sewage systems run without a glitch, report broken and missing gully grids, rodding eyes and manhole covers as well as also blocked and overflowing sewers and water pollution to the City’s call centre on 0860 10 30 89; via SMS to 31373 or send an e-mail to WaterTOC@capetown.gov.za.

HE SPCA Horse Show on 10-11 December at the Constantia Valley Riding Club (CVRC), Brommersvlei Road, Constantia, is the largest charity horse show in the Western Cape. Funds will aid the Horse Care Unit in Grassy Park, which cares for abused, abandoned, sick and injured horses, ponies and donkeys. The weekend event is co-sponsored by Abax Investments and Mr and Mrs Jack Mitchell and family. Saturday’s gymkhana starts at 09:00. Show-jumping starts at 08:00 on Sunday. There will be a Christmas market, food stalls and children’s entertainment on both days. Endorsed by the Western Province Horse Society, the show is open to riders of all ages. Cape riders consider it an excellent practice event for young riders and novice horses. “It’s fun for riders and spectators alike,” says SPCA Events Manager Juan August who has organised the last six

THE killing last week of a young bride by her husband defies the 16 Days of Activism campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children. The international campaign is from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). On 3 December, Eunice Mhlewa (27) was fatally stabbed in her Manenberg home, reportedly by her husband, who afterwards tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat. The couple had been married just eight months when the man apparently accused his wife of having an affair Neighbours ran to the house when they heard the woman’s screams, but were too late. While they couldn’t save Eunice’s life, what matters is that they took action; instead of turning a blind eye as society is prone to do, in the name of “it not being their business”. Preventing violence against women and children is everyone’s business and since 1999 the South African government, civil-society organisations and the business sector, have made it their business. The global campaign focuses on violence against women only, but South Africa added children to its campaign because of the country’s high prevalence of child abuse. The theme for the 2011 campaign is “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Proliferation of small arms and their role in domestic violence” and government will mobilise communities to reduce arms, commonly used in many domestic violence cases. There are many ways society, including men, can help to end the unacceptably high levels of physical, emotional and sexual abuse on women and children. Speak out, make sure female victims get help, report child abuse, encourage children to report bullying, volunteer for groups that support abused women and children, join a community policing forum... Help create safer communities and know that you have helped prevent the killing of another woman.

Your SMSes Open your heart and share I HAVE read in the media that certain concerned citizens are encouraging the privileged not to give or donate any food or monies to those knocking on our doors or shouting at our gates. Instead, we are encouraged to do the right thing and take money and goods to an accredited organisation that would in their wisdom make sure that the right people receive it. But suppose my wife and son and I live on the street, have not eaten for two days and now the nagging hunger forces us to go to the suburbs. We knock on door after door and leave empty handed because the occupants state

they are following a criteria and their donations were given to an organisation that helps us people. We ask where this oasis of charity is and are told it might be in Wynberg. How are we to find money to travel to this oasis? Is this how you or your family want to be treated if you should fall on hard times (and with today’s global climate and economic state, this is not impossible). That neverland oasis must be created right here in our homes and I will give until it hurts because it is my choice. KEITH BLAKE Ottery

Local church desperately needed I AM a member of Vineyard Revival Ministries (Old Lotus River high School), Edward Avenue, Ottery, and would like to make a request on behalf of the congregation. We were established on 23 June 1974, yet we are still looking for a plot of land to build our church on. We started out at our Pastor, Pastor Noel Tomlinson’s house in Ivan Road, Ottery, and now use the Lotus River High School, but we are really in desperate need of a church.

If there is anyone out there who can assist us, please help. We would like to have a church building of our own for services, funerals and marriages. Those who have a church building and enough money, spare a thought for all those who do not have. I know God will provide, he always does. We are a non-profit organisation. CHARMAINE JACOBS Ottery

My child was attacked by three dogs whose owner declared his dogs were “under control”. My child now has a grave fear of dogs and does not want to go to the beach for fear of being attacked! I say no dogs should be allowed in any public place. Let them have designated beach and forest areas where they and their careless owners can go. More animal matters . Some people want to spoil everyone else’s fun with fireworks just because they won’t train or control their animals. . Become a resident tourist Re the letter in the People’s Post of Tuesday 1 November stating Cape Town is fast becoming City of the World: I most wholeheartedly agree as a Capetonian. Those who have lived for generations in the Cape and those who have emigrated all agree that Cape Town is the best place to be. Also, the advert that says experience cannot be bought is priceless. That is what I have experienced in where I live in Plumstead. From the top of the various bridges in the area, one has a panoramic view of the Constantiaberg mountains, with Elephant Eye prominent, the farm lands and the fullness of the rear of Table Mountain

right to Devil’s Peak. While living in Steurhof I explored Princess Vlei, Elfin dale area, Wetlands in that vicinity and further afield I discovered Die Oog in Bergvliet. In Constantia there are discovered various places where one can park and either explore on foot the diverse trails which lead one through the tranquil area. And there is a panoramic view of the mountains, farmlands and the expanse of nature – priceless. This is much better than having to organise a major holiday to recharge the batteries. KEITH VINCENT Plumstead

My son’s brand new Totem BMX bicycle was forcefully taken from his nine-year-old friend by two skollies on Sunday evening at 15:45 on the corner of Lansdowne and Joanne roads. Needless to say, my son was extremely upset. We reported the matter to Lansdowne po-

Mom would love the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could do with an upgrade, and I know I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. Okay, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people are great. They make jewellery, pottery, knitted stuff, Teddy Bears, paintings and home preserves etc. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, people, do you really need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a R50 string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mail man, trash guy or baby-sitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining South African pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about us, encouraging small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other South Africans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. This should be the new South African Christmas tradition. Forward this to everyone on your mailing list, post it to discussion groups, throw up a post in your local newspaper in the Rants and Raves section, your radio stations and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn’t that what Christmas is about? Buy South African, be south african The job you save might be your own UGU CARLINI

Help find child’s stolen bike

AS the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide us with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods, merchandise produced at the expense of South African labour. This year will be different. This year South Africans will give the gift of genuine concern for other South Africans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by South African hands. Yes, there is plenty. It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone, yes everyone gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber? Gym membership? Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car valet’d? Small, South African-owned car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the cash on a Chinese-made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway fixed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or roof waterproofed and painted. There are a Gazillion owner-run restaurants all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks, this isn’t about big National chains, this is about supporting your home town South African with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorbike, done at a shop run by a South African working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom?

The Phantom strikes again TAMMY PETERSEN

AS a child he dreamt of becoming a lawyer, but today the spotlight marks his place in the world – and it is not a court room. Kurt Haupt of Rondebosch has 10 years of acting experience under his belt and plans to stay at centre stage for years to come. The 35-year-old can be seen in Broadway’s longest running musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, which opened at the Artscape last Tuesday. The story tells of a disfigured musical genius, known only as The Phantom, who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom makes her his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for

Derek in the District FRESH from a twelve-city tour of Switzerland, and an intense three days of recording in Knysna with award winning sound engineer Howard Butcher, Cape Town composer-guitarist Derek Gripper plays music from his latest album The Sound of Water at The Theatre in the District, 106 Chapel Street, District Six, on Saturday 10 December at 20:00. Tickets cost R60. to secure a seatPhone to bookon 079 770 4686 .

Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passion collide. Haupt plays Monsieur Reyer, the Opera’s chief répétiteur, or director, whom he describes as bossy, single-minded and “just like me.” He trained at the University of Cape Town and stumbled onto the stage by chance. “After my initial dream of becoming a lawyer, I decided on music,” he says. “I taught myself to play the piano, an instrument about which I am extremely passionate.” Then the acting bug bit. Haupt completed art studies and stepped out from behind the curtain. “My first role was as Tony in West Side Story and I enjoyed every minute of it. But I also had my fair share of roles as a tree in the background.” Since then, Kurt has appeared on

GRANDWEST presents a stellar line-up of reggae, pop and comic entertainment on Thursday 15 December at the Grand Arena, featuring Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, top three 2011 Idols winners Dave, Mark and Crushandra, and comedian Kurt Schoonraad. Legendary pop-afro-reggae group Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels need little introduction. The five-man band has previously shared the stage with musical luminaries such as Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan and, closer to home, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Lucky Dube. They first gained widespread recognition with their rendition of the Eddie

Theatre’s going to the birds EVER wondered where the term cloud cuckoo land originated? Well, this year’s re-staging of an ancient Greek play at the Kirstenbosch Open-Air Theatre will give you the answer. Artscape and the Siyasanga Cape Town Theatre Company bring the Greek classic to life in the tradition of “The Bacchae” and “Oedipus the Tyrant” seen in the theatre in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Aristophanes’ “The Birds”, in the appropriate setting of Kirstenbosch, will open on 20 December and run until 15 January, and is a play to be enjoyed by the whole family. Two elderly Athenians, Euelpides and Peisetaerus, fed up with human treachery and greed, can no longer stomach living in the city among their fellow men. So they travel out into the country and team up with the birds and, after changing into birds themselves, they build a city with and for the birds. This is to be the perfect habitation, cloud cuckoo land. Along the way they meet all sorts of birds, have lots of adventures, avoid a number of dodgy humans who try to get in on their act, and then they live happily ever after. Lots of laughs and good sense

stage in London and Singapore in Car men, Chicago and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. But the thespian is in his element in the current production, describing the experience as “exhilarating and lekker.” “The opening night didn’t go as planned as the paint on the scenery hadn’t dried by the time we had to start. Wet paint would have damaged costumes, among other things. However, the show must go on and we gave a ‘concert version’ and all was well again,” he says, adding that night two went “much better.” “This is an extravaganza that shouldn’t be missed. I hope that as many people as possible get to see it.” It is an artistic feast of jaw-dropping scenery, exquisite costumes and breathtaking special effects. The season ends on 15 January 2012. Tickets cost from R125 via Computicket or (021) 421 7695.

Stand and deliver with Nik FROM Tuesday 6 December to Friday 7 January, Nik Rabinowitz emerges from politically infested waters to bring Cape Town’s Baxter theatre his brave new solo show, “Stand and Deliver”, directed by Brent Palmer. One of only two Jewish boys to have been born in a stable, Nik Rabinowitz always wanted to be an accountant. It was a breakthrough performance reciting a speech at Shmuli Wiseglass’s barmitzvah that really cemented Nik’s future. This was enough to put his dreams of accountancy aside to pursue a life in stand-up comedy. Luckily for us, he chose the road less travelled. Luckily for him, his wife is a doctor. In “Stand and Deliver”, Nik, a

Xhosa-speaking Jew, explores the reasons that have led coloured people to believe that he is coloured, why Afrikaners have settled in Israel, and how a grown man can end up saying some weird things. Warming up for Nik is a hot new talent, Tats Nkonzo. Tats sings really funny songs, in a beautiful voice. This will confuse you. You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll love every minute. The previews from 6 to 9 December and on 13 December start at 20:15 and at 20:45 on 10 December. Thereafter, the shows runs from Tuesdays to Fridays at 20:15 and on Saturdays at 20:45. There will be a special New Year’s Eve performance at 22:00. Tickets cost from R100 to R140 and R190 for New Year’s Eve with dis-

Ajax on winning ways again LYNN PRINS

AJAX Cape Town ended on a positive note after a toughly contested first half against Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday at Cape Town Stadium. George Maluleka opened up the score for Ajax, just after half time in the 48th minute, followed by Matthew Booth’s goal in the 60th minute, taking the score 2-0 to full time. Celtic, who showed less aggression in their attacking, came off lucky as the Urban Warriors failed to take advantage of their given opportunities. Apart from Booth scoring the winning goal, he has also been a revelation at the back for the Urban Warriors and brought stability with first time tackling. He also partners well with Nazeer Allie who joined Ajax this season. In previous games, after Clinton Daniels left for Sundowns, firmness was missing in the team, but Booth’s vast experience is marshal-

ling the troops at the back. And with inspirational captain Granwald Scott and Brent Carelse back from injury, Ajax found their momentum going forward in Sunday’s game. However, despite the Urban Warriors sealed win, a concern for head coach Maarten Stekelenburg must be that his strikers wasted numerous chances in front of goal yesterday. Ajax moved up to seventh place and surely expected to win more games. Who knows, maybe they coming out of the slump they have been in for so long. Lansdowne based team Engen Santos need a desperate win. With the festive break nearing, looming Santos is now three points behind Jomo Cosmos in the bottom half of the log. Cosmos won their first game of the season on Sunday but remain bottom of the log. Santos, who won a game in October against Maritzburg United, struggle with their defence, which is inconsistent and a major concern. They seem to lose

concentration at crucial times, and on Saturday stalwart centre defender Wayne Arendse’s presence was missed when he was replaced by Pere Ariweriyai, former AmaZulu defender. Arendse, who is regarded as “safe” in the backline, was replaced due to injury. Since Ariweriyai’s signing, he has been having shaky starts, and although he has good aerial presence, speedy strikers normally catch him on the break. During Santos’ last two games, goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng was also not performing at his best, especially against Sundowns when they caught him off guard. However, on the bright side, Vuyisile Wana and Eleazar Rodgers are regaining their scoring form with the latter scoring against Sundowns earlier in the game. Santos’ next game takes place on Friday 16 December against AmaZulu at Athlone Stadium. And on Saturday 17 December Ajax take on Golden Arrows at 18:00 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

George Maluleka opened the scoring for the Urban Warriors early in the second half, putting Ajax in the lead. Ajax won the match 20 on Sunday at the Cape Town Stadium. Their win moved them up to seventh place in the log standings. Photo: Rashied Isaacs
