VIOLENCE from car guards towards drivers are raising the ire of businesses in Claremont. Residents are being cautioned against car guards operating on the corner of Harfield and Main roads. Pharmacist Peter Higgs, who owns a business in the area, says he is becoming more concerned about the car guards. Higgs says they have become violent and are targeting women and threatening them with a screw driver if they don’t hand over money. Higgs says: “Customers, especially women whom I have had to walk to their cars, don’t want to come here any more because they are scared.” While most of the harassment has been aimed at motorists, he says, this hasn’t
stopped the car guards from turning violent towards one another. “They fight over cars all the time and a few weeks back one car guard even stabbed the other,” says Higgs. He says it is unnecessary for these individuals to behave in such a manner. According to Higgs one of his employees was recently threatened by a car guard who said he would scratch her car if she didn’t pay him a parking fee. Another employee at the pharmacy, who does not want her name mentioned for fear of her safety, told People’s Post she is afraid to walk in the road – especially at night because the guards are aware they are being monitored by business owners and the police. She says customers are being forced to pay for free parking. “Many customers have come into the pharmacy to make change because the car guards
demanded they pay R5. I always advise customers not to give in to their demands.” Higgs and employees say the car guards intimidate motorists by shouting at them, standing in front of their cars, threatening them with objects or banging on their car windows. This reporter witnessed how a woman motorist, with a baby on the arm, sought refuge in the back seat of her own car to get away from one car guard. None of the car guards wanted their photo taken or were prepared to speak to People’s Post on the record. Ward councillor Ian Iversen, who has been dealing with many of the complaints, says the City has installed a camera on the street to help monitor the guards. Iversen says: “It is unacceptable that a few people can have such a negative impact on a neighbourhood while it seems they can get
away with their criminal behaviour.” Captain Angie Latchman, spokesperson for the Claremont cluster, says no formal complaint was made at the Claremont police station prior to Iversen bringing the matter to the attention of the station commander Colonel Jayce Naidoo. However, the police and the City will be working to rid the area of undesirable individuals. “I have spoken to Naidoo who will be sending a van to patrol the area daily,” Iversen says. Latchman says weekly operations have been put in place to address the vagrants and the car guards. “Regular stop-and-search and high visibility patrols have also been initiated to address this problem.” Iversen advises the community to be careful and take care when parked in these areas. He urged residents to contact him on (021) 794 2493.
