‘Clean our fields now’ REYANA STEYN

THLONE residents are threatening to protest in Lawrence Road if the fields in their area are not cleaned. They say they are “sick and tired” of the mess they have had to live with for a year. They also say that the area is infested with rats “the size of cats”, as well as mice, and they are too scared to leave their doors open. People’s Post went to Lawrence Road and found numerous open spaces covered in rubbish. The dirt ranged from broken couches, mats, clothes, wood and bottles to tyres and papers. The area also reeked. “How can people live like this? No one cleans here, and we are forced to live in this mess,” says Muriel Susa, a resident. “All the residents are furious about the mess, and have vowed to protest if action is not taken. The children need to pass this dump and they can easily get sick or hurt because of it.” Charmaine Less, another resident, says the road stinks from all the dirt. “We are human beings, not animals. We are tax payers, yet we have to live under these unbearable conditions.” Brian Wallace, who lives next to a field, says it is a health hazard.

“We cannot even leave our doors open because we need to be worried about mice entering our homes. You see huge rats running down the street – the rats are so big that you would think they are cats.” Priscilla Wallace says residents try to keep the area clean by sweeping in front of their homes. “We clean the road in front of our homes, but it is not our job. The council would come now and then, but the mess is always there. How can we live like this?” Susa says the City does not work for everybody, but only for a few people. Suzette Little, councillor for the area, says she has taken photos of the dumping and the area will be cleaned soon. “I am urging people to take photos of those who dump and to report it. We need to know who is dumping so that they can be fined, or we will be cleaning and the next day the area will be dumped on again. “Many people don’t want to report it because they are fearing that they would still have to live with their neighbours, but if they don’t report who it is, their names will never be known. If photographs are taken, it would be so much easier. “They need to take ownership of their community, come forward and report who is creating all this filth in the community.” She says all the matters that have been reported so far are being investigated.

Robbery syndicate broken up REYANA STEYN

MANENBERG police have cracked an armed robbery syndicate operating in the precinct. Police say the syndicate was uncovered after a group of four men lured a couple to Cape Town from Durban and robbed them of all their belongings. “The incident happened on Tuesday during the day,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. “The couple came to Cape Town after they posted an advertisement in the paper that they were looking to buy a house and a truck. “They were contacted by an ‘agent’ who told them that they must come down as something had been found for them. The husband and wife flew down and they were then picked up in a Silver BMW at the airport.” He says the couple were driven to Pluto Road in Surrey Estate. “The woman got out of the vehicle as she wanted to go to the shop. At that moment two men jumped out of a black Golf and robbed the woman at gunpoint.

“The men took R1 000 in cash, her cellphone, IDs and passports. The husband then jumped out of the car and both the silver BMW and black Golf sped off. “The couple then managed to make their way to the Manenberg police station, where they explained what had happened. The couple also managed to get the registration number of the silver BMW.” Members of the Violent Crimes Unit worked around the clock and arrested three men on Wednesday for the crime. Later on the same day a fourth suspect handed himself in at the police station. The suspects have also been linked to a case where 60 cellphones were stolen from a Chinese man in Surrey Estate on Saturday 2 April. “The man also placed an advertisement in a newspaper saying that he was selling cellphones in bulk,” says Lakay. “After being contacted by the armed robbers, who said they wanted to purchase the cellphones, the man flew down from Johannesburg. The men in the silver BMW met the man in Klipfontein Road, where they drove him to Pluto Road, Surrey Estate.” He says once they were in the road, the black Golf pulled up and the man was robbed at gunpoint of 60 cellphones. Both cars then sped off. “The man reported the incident to the police station, and, during the investigation, 21 of the cellphones were found in the suspects’ possession.” The four suspects appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday on two charges of armed robbery. All four men will remain in Pollsmoor Prison until their next court appearance on Friday 15 April. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who has information about the syndicate is urged to contact the police station on (021) 699-9400.

DID YOU KNOW that pigeons have lived alongside man for thousands of years, with the first images of pigeons being found by archaeologists in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) dating back to 3000 BC. It was the Sumerians in Mesopotamia that first started to breed white doves from the wild pigeons we see in our towns and cities today, and this undoubtedly accounts for the amazing variety of colours that are found in the average flock of urban pigeons. – (www.deterapigeon.com)

Man arrested after police find drugs

Goodbye to Gatesville’s ghastly stench

REYANA STEYN

A MANENBERG man was arrested on Friday after drugs worth R12 000 were found in his house. The man fled his home on Tuesday when police arrived with a search warrant. “Members of the Organised Crime Unit had a search warrant for a house in Thames Walk,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. “When officers arrived at his house on Tuesday, the owner ran away. The officers then had neighbours come over and watch while the search was being done. “The neighbours had to be present so that if anything was found it couldn’t be said that we had planted the evidence.” Lakay says they found one bag containing five grams of tik and 269 units of tik packets ready to be sold on the street. “The 42-year-old owner returned to his home on Friday and was arrested by police,” he says. “People must be wary of keeping drugs. The police will not tolerate any drugs being sold and continuous raids will be done to stop the dealing from happening. “The selling and using of drugs lead to other

ATESVILLE residents and shoppers can look forward to finally breathing in fresh air now that the sewage problem in Hazel Road is being sorted out. The drains in the street have been overflowing with sewage, which causes havoc as traffic comes to a standstill. Traders have had to move their stalls and residents have to keep their doors closed because it spills into their homes. People’s Post previously reported that business owners are furious because erupting and stinking sewage drains are chasing customers away. And equally angry residents say this has been a problem for 45 years (“Drain pong killing business”, People’s Post, 1 February). Philemon Mashoko, director of the City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation department, says they have now sealed the drain covers to prevent gases or odours from escaping from the sewer line. “All blockages in the area are treated as high priority by the depot, as they are aware of the surrounding food outlets and the condition of the existing pipes. “In order to overcome the problem, the City will have an annual pipe-cleaning tender, which is currently in the procurement process, to establish contracts whereby bucket machines would be used to remove the sediment from the pipelines. Tenders for this contract closed on Friday 18 March.” Mashoko says: “Discussions are under way with the catchment planning department for an integrated approach to overcoming the problem, whereby water pollution control officers will assist in in-

specting all surrounding properties for illegal stormwater discharge into the sewer system, as well as the reticulation section assisting catchment planning in identifying stormwater-to-sewer connections and blanking them off.” Naseema Allie, from Golden Dish, says: “It’s about time. We are glad that they are doing something. We’ve had to put up with this problem for years. After even being accused of being the cause of the smell and the problem, it’s good to hear that they are fixing the problem. Not only was there the sewage problem, but also the rodents and rats were there because of this.” A manager of a nearby shop, who wishes to remain anonymous, says it is a relief that the problem will be fixed. “The smell was unbearable and all businesses in the area were losing money. We’re happy about the news, especially now with winter coming because that’s when the problem is at its worst.” Koelthum Fisher, a nearby resident, says she is happy the problem is being attended to as the smell would invade her senses whenever she walked in the road. “In the fast (Ramadaan) it’s the worst, because you don’t eat and you have to inhale the smell on an empty stomach.”

crimes, such as domestic abuse, theft, robberies and many more. “People must take a stand and report any drug dealing taking place in the area. “All reporting of information is handled with confidentiality.” He thanked all community members who have reported crime so far. The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday. People’s Post could not determine the date of the man’s next court appearance by the time of going to print.

Jobs available during elections W

ITH the municipal elections around the corner, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has created 15 630 temporary voluntary employment opportunities for community members. This is in addition to other IEC positions, such as assistant project coordinators and area managers. The 15 630 temporary staff will man voting stations. The IEC is a publicly-funded, permanent body that was established in terms of the Electoral Commission Act of 1996. Its purpose is to promote and safeguard democracy in South Africa. Provincial Electoral Officer, Reverend Courtney Sampson, says the IEC’s task is to put all structures and systems in place for a “free and fair election without showing prej-

udice or favour to any of the participating political parties”. The IEC’s job structure consists of permanent jobs as well as “expansion job structures” – temporary employment for people in the community during the election period. As each electoral project coordinator has an assistant, there are 40 posts for the assistant project coordinator position. There are also 387 posts for the area manager position. These positions are advertised in various publications as applicants would need to have a tertiary qualification. The posts are terminated one month after the election is over. Sampson said: “There are 1 570 voting stations, and during the registration process, three staff members are at each voting station and 10 are present on election day.” However, there are currently no more positions available at the IEC, as they have all been filled. According to Sampson, the IEC does not offer jobs. “The 15 630 positions that are available at the time of elections are voluntary positions, and they get compensated for the time spent working in aid of the elections,” he said. The IEC advertised the available positions and anyone interested could apply at the local offices in Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Strand, Constantia and Bellville. Training is provided by the IEC and began on Friday 1 April. It covered the operations involved dur-

Many of the old boys had not seen each other in over 20 years. They also paid tribute to former club chairman Firgil Adams, who died in Australia. Four old boys assisted Silvertree with cash donations, and two 40yearold baseball gloves belonging to Silvertree legend, Ivan Mehui zen, were handed over to the club for use by two underprivileged children from the Leliebloem Children’s Home in Athlone who play for the club. ing elections. Staff are taught to handle difficult situations, what their duties are and the legal aspects of the legislation. According to Sampson, political party officials or campaigners may not apply for a job at the IEC during

election time. “Having someone who campaigns for a particular political party volunteering at a voting station on election day will put the IEC in a bad light, as they could try to persuade people to vote for that party. “There is a declaration that the

volunteers at the voting station have to sign, saying that they are being truthful,” he says. Any of the volunteers found guilty of campaigning for a political party at any time during the election periodwill be removed from their post.

‘Massive’ arrears protest action planned Poor people to take to the streets in demand of scrapping of municipal backlog were asking for, and we will respond by doing what’s best for the people and protesting. Ons gaan Kaap toe.” The action comes two months after 3 000 residents from Manenberg took to the streets armed with posters asking the City to lower their rent and write off their rental backlog. Wanza says people have been paying rent for over 30 years and they should be given ownership of the council properties. Also under the banner of the CSC, more than 500 Hanover Park residents took to the streets last month and delivered a memorandum to the local rent office demanding that their arrears be scrapped. One of the area coordinators for CSC, Errol Davids, says people are becoming involved in the “movement” because they are desperate and “over their heads in debt”. Davids, who is the deputy chairperson of the Hanover Park Civic Association, says the organisation is in “total support” of the planned protest, adding that they will start distributing pamphlets within the week. Two weeks ago, Mitchell’s Plain residents expressed their concerns about the scrapping of water arrears when they burnt a cardboard coffin containing hundreds of warning letters issued by the City. The coffin was loaded onto a hearse and taken from Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre to the Beacon Valley Rent Office where it was burnt in front of cheering protestors.

HOUSANDS of people are expected to take part in a massive protest which will see residents from 12 suburbs march to the Cape Town Civic Centre under one banner on Tuesday 26 April to demand the scrapping of all municipal arrears for people living in the city’s impoverished areas.

The decision to protest was made by Communities for Social Change (CSC), a coordinating structure of civic organisations representing Hanover Park, Athlone, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay, Heideveld, Lavender Hill, Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy Park, Elsies River and Leonsdale. The decision comes after meetings held with City of Cape Town officials failed to resolve issues concerning the poor, says Mario Wanza, the organiser of the CSC. Representatives from the CSC met Mayor Dan Plato and City officials yesterday to discuss their demands. These include the halting of evictions due to illegal occupations, debt and anti-social behaviour, a call for the scrapping of municipal arrears and the handing over of councilowned units to people who have been paying rent for years. “What upset us is that there was no investigation into the validity of our requests and no committee set up to review our demands. “The City just flat-out refused what we

The CSC’s Mitchell’s Plain coordinator, Sulyman Stellenboom, says another march will take place in Mitchell’s Plain on 21 April when they will return to the subcouncil office and request feedback on their demand for the removal of water management devices behind the incorrect readings being taken from water meters, leading to high bills. “This City has no respect for the poor and is not taking this matter seriously. We are representing the people and although we try to engage with the officials towards finding a solution, they are not coming to the party.” Plato, who was handed a copy of the pamphlet which the CSC has been distributing to invite people to take part, declined to comment on the planned protest, saying only that “it’s their right to march”. However, he says the action seems to be “politically motivated” and that the CSC is making “one demand after the other”. “They are making accusations and allegations without listening to our explanations. They claim there is a lack of service delivery to the poor, but they cannot give us the proof to back this claim. They need to be more organised and give me a list of complaints so that I can follow up on it.” He adds that a follow-up meeting is being planned, although a date is yet to be set.

SANParks’ announcement takes civilian stakeholders by surprise

Not all rangers will be armed TERESA FISCHER

C

ONTRARY to earlier media reports, not all of the 50 additional rangers who will be deployed in the Table Mountain National Park will be armed. Instead, there will be a specifically-trained unit of armed rangers, with one armed ranger per patrol group. These officials will carry 9 mm handguns. It is envisaged that the first recruits will be in action within the next three months. On Wednesday 6 April, the chief executive officer of South African National Parks (SANParks), Dr David Mabunda, announced that rangers are to be armed. The park currently employs 43 rangers and 12 visitor safety officers, who cover the mountain range from Cape Point to Table Mountain. According to Mabunda, efforts will be made to increase the number of additional rangers by 50 over the next three years. There will also be more dogs

used on the mountain. SANParks spokesperson, Wanaka Rusthoi, adds that at this stage numbers of armed rangers cannot be given for safety reasons. The specifics of where these rangers will be deployed and in what circumstances they could use their weapons has not been finalised. Rusthoi says this is partly to maintain the element of surprise, but added that hot spots would certainly be targeted. A spate of mugging incidents, often at knifepoint, flared up in May last year. However, the latest announcement seems to have taken civilian stakeholders by surprise. In February Community Safety MEC, Albert Fritz, initiated the formation of a steering committee to tackle crime on the mountain. This aimed to coordinate park officials, police and groups such as the Table Mountain Safety Action Group and to facilitate consultation. The announcement that rangers would soon be armed followed, but it is understood that no mention of the plan was made at the last Safety Forum meeting. Asked to comment on this, Rusthoi says only: “The steering committee is working well together on all matters regarding

visitor safety on the mountain, including search and rescue efforts. We look forward to working together to make the mountain safer for all visitors.” Asked if the decision was a result of the efforts of the steering committee, Melany Kühn, spokesperson for Fritz, said that the SANParks announcement was driven nationally and that it was the culmination of a process that started “way before” the steering committee was formed. Kühn adds safety on Table Mountain is about involving the community as a whole to bolster existing law enforcement initiatives. According to Kühn, a prime example is that UCT, which borders the mountain on the Rhodes Memorial side, is currently looking at additional state-of-the-art cameras to include the mountain in its surveillance. Mabunda said the impact of crime over the years in parts of the TMNP had resulted in the decision. He adds that SANParks and its partners had to “act decisively”. But it is understood that promises of an armed response team were made two years ago but never materialised. Andre van Schalkwyk, of the Table Mountain Safety Action Group Watch, a group of hikers, mountain bikers and walkers, welcomes the development and

says he is very happy with these new steps. “We believe the constant pressure all concerned mountain users and the media have applied over the past four years has contributed to these developments, especially the data and the statistics we made available recently.” Van Schalkwyk adds that the TMNP has a clear obligation to ensure people are secure within their parks and that not delivering on this mandate would not be in their interests. Noordhoek resident, Louis Liebenberg of CyberTracker, has previously submitted a proposal to the TMNP to train rangers to become trackers. He tracks and maps the paths and hiding places that criminals use on the CyberTracker software he developed, along with an American programmer. Liebenberg says: “The announcement is to be welcomed as the park currently has far too few rangers to make it safe. “The aggressive nature of the incidents makes it necessary for rangers to be armed.” He adds: “However, simply employing more rangers to do visible patrols will not be sufficient. Criminals often simply hide when they see patrols, and then attack visitors when the patrols have moved on.” Rangers need to be trained in tracking skills and stealth in or-

Opening night is Saturday 16 April at 20:00. Shows will take place on Mondays to Saturdays from 20:00 till 22:00, except Friday 22 April (Good Friday). It tells the story of an intercultural couple whose love for each other was spurned in 2010 by their fami-

lies, friends and broader society. The original musical score, composed by Holmes-Ganief, reflects the rich diversity of South Africa’s melting pot of cultural influences, combining classical, Middle Eastern, Asian and African musical elements into contemporary, melodic, world music arrangements. In January this year the CTF adopted “Silence of the Music” as one of its major cultural arts projects for 2011. Tickets are R120 each and can be bought through Computicket, online at www.computicket.co.za or its call centre on 083 915 8000. Tickets can also be bought from any Shoprite or Checkers branch.

Choirs battle it out Things can be much worse for the Silver Fez TONY ROBINSON

TAURIQ HASSEN

COME this weekend, eight top Malay choir groups will be battling it out for the 2011 Silver Fez competition. The 72nd Silver Fez Grand Finale kicks off at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday 16 April. The 29 teams belonging to the Cape Malay Choir Board will compete for the overall trophy, the best dressed choir, the grand march-past, exhibition march, mini float and highest points award. Some of the teams participating include the Young Men and Shoprite Jonge Studente from Mitchell’s Plain, Ottomans from Sherwood Park, Young Zinnias from Bridgetown, Sterlitzia from Kensington and Modern Boys from Ottery. Board president, Shafiek April, was both proud and excited, saying: “This is really going to be something spectacular for the public to see.”

The Silver Fez trophy was donated by Die Burger in 1940, which saw the Young Lions from Manenberg being honoured with the first win. Thereafter, the Boarding Boys dominated proceedings, walking away as 11-time winners of the Silver Fez. “This is the most sought-after trophy in the Malay choirs and the teams will be going full steam ahead in their mission to be crowned champions,” says April. The event kicks off at 15:00, with the gates opening at 13:30. Adults pay R30, children R15 and tickets for the reserved area costs R40. There will also be CDs, DVDs, top eight Nederlandsliedere collections and Nederlands books on sale. “The public should know there will be strict security not allowing liquor or firearms inside the stadium,” he says. For more information phone (021) 692-1450 or 072 369 3387 or fax (021) 691-7860.

MOST of the people who are raging against the idea of exploring for shale gas in the Karoo know very little about the technology and what Sasol has called its “game changing” potential. In fact, most of the knowledge in circulation has come from those strongly opposed to “fracking”. Public relations companies have even been retained to blacken the picture and whip up emotions to a point approaching hysteria. They have plenty of material to work with. In the early days of fracking there were disasters, most of them the result of wild cat operations. But the technology has improved and in responsible hands it might even be acceptable in some circumstances. So it is easy to understand the fears in circulation. I grew up in the Karoo and I know that water gives land its value. Take away the water or contaminate it and one is left with worthless desert. In a drought, a good borehole is the only thing that stands between a farmer and financial ruin. It is an emotional

relationship. You can mess with his wife but don’t touch his borehole. The water of agricultural importance lies at depths of no more than a few hundred metres. Fracking, however, takes place something like 10 kilometres below the surface! That is five time deeper than our deepest gold mine. The temperature down there will be about 300°C and any water would become instant steam. If the hole is lined with steel there should be no contamination of agricultural water. But one can understand the fear. The biggest problems will be logistical ones. The equipment is massive and new roads will be required. What does one do with 10 kilometres of earth from borehole cores? The impact on the Karoo will be considerable. And where will the water needed for fracking come from? On the other hand, holes 10 kilometres deep will give us access to an inexhaustible supply of geothermal heat. And that can be turned into electricity. The US Department of Energy

says geothermal electricity is cheaper than coal or nuclear power and the price does not go up every year along with the cost of fuel and labour. Even if there is no gas we could win. So here’s the question: would you rather have Shell fracking in the Karoo or Eskom trying to run half a dozen atomic power stations? Nuclear power requires consistent good management for at least 50 years. There is no place for CEOs who trim the maintenance budgets to improve the bottom line and their bonuses. And there is no place for cadre deployment. Imagine a future Minister of Minerals, Energy and Nationalisation – someone like Julius Malema – having a hand in the appointment of nuclear mangers. His matric woodwork studies would be of little help. We may be able to survive an implosion in the Land Bank or a foul-up in the Karoo, but mismanagement of a Koeberg could be goodbye Cape Town.

City’s new horsepower does not come cheap TONY ROBINSON

H

AVE you noticed the motorcycles the Cape Town traffic cops are riding these days? They are 1300 cc Hondas and they cost about R150 000 each. Now why do the traffic police need such powerful motorcycles when their operations are confined to the municipal area where speed limits are between 60 and 80 km/h? It is true that speed limits do go up to 120 km/h on the freeways, but that is not where the work is. So what is the point of motorcycles that can race along at speeds in excess of 200 km/h? For less than half the price, the City could have bought versatile 600 cc bikes by the same manufacturer that are also capable of excessive speeds. That means they could have bought twice as many bikes (or saved a lot of money). How much money? Well, it would take a pensioner who lives in a modest home and pays about R500 a month in rates 16 years to pay the extra cost of a single superbike. No doubt the traffic department will have their own story. They will probably explain about the radios and other equipment the officers have to carry, but that’s all bunkum – radios have never been smaller or lighter than they are now and, anyway, the bike was designed to carry two. There is no

way the equipment (whatever it is) could be heavier or less compact than a pillion passenger. Anybody who has ever ridden a motorcycle (and I am one of them) will tell you that a 600 cc machine is more than powerful enough for traffic work. In fact, the lighter machine is better suited for use in heavy traffic. Buying the big 1300 cc superbikes for traffic cops is as extravagant as buying BMWs and Jaguars for building inspectors and social workers. Of course there was a time, under a previous City administration, when the mounted traffic officers disappeared and the new crop of officers tried to do the job in air-conditioned cars that cost even more than superbikes. Somehow it always took two cops to drive one car so this reduced the visible presence on the roads and it reduced their effectiveness because it is darn difficult to thread an air-conditioned Camry through a traffic jam to the scene of an accident. Once there, the car becomes an extra obstacle. The mounted traffic officer, on the other hand, can thread his/her way through traffic to take charge and get the traffic flowing again. So it’s good to see the bikes back, but why the superbikes? We must think of the pensioner who has to pay an extra 16 years’ rates for the extra horsepower.

ON A ROLL: The Kraaifontein community was up and about early on Saturday 26 March as young and old made their way to the third Rachel’s Angels Market Day. The day started off with a 5 km fun walk with the local Cape Town soccer club, Santos. The walk, themed “Superheroes for our planet”, was in support of the Earth Hour initiative, and participants were challenged to dress up as a superhero. The winning school, Bernadino Heights High School, which also played host to this year’s market day, raised R38 000, with Schoonspruit High School hot on their heels with R19 000. Malibu High School’s stall, California, won the bestlooking stall title. A portion of the funds raised on the day was donated to two Kraaifontein charities – the St Raphael PreSchool Centre and the Kraai fontein Home for the Elderly and Disabled. The Drummer Corps in picture appeared on the reality series “SA’s Got Talent”, and entertained the crowds for free in support of their school, Silverstream High School.

Cry, beloved country WHILE most South Africans live in abject poverty, public officials such as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka seem to have been living like a millionaire – if the findings of a Sunday Times report are true. No expense was allegedly spared by Shiceka who – according to documents in the newspaper’s possession – has spent more than R2.5 million on first-class flights and accommodation since 2008. The article states that Shiceka spent R640 000 in one year for him and staff to stay at the One & Only, of which R280 000 was spent on Shiceka alone – by his own admission. Furthermore, it is reported that Shiceka embarked on a first-class flight for him and his personal assistant, rounded off with a stay in a five-star hotel to visit his girlfriend in prison in Switzerland, at a cost of R335 000. The visit to the prison, in a chauffeur-driven limo, cost R32 000. If true, Shiceka’s lifestyle smacks of “blatant abuse of taxpayers’ money”. His alleged wasteful expenditure has attracted widespread condemnation. Shiceka is not the only South African public official whose lavish lifestyle is under scrutiny. In a country that can ill afford to blow millions of rands, ANC youth league leader Julius Malema cost taxpayers more than R886 000 for police bodyguards from October 2009 to October 2010. Malema did not hold any public office to justify having two bodyguards. He was just an ordinary citizen, like the millions of other ordinary South Africans who fork out millions to keep themselves safe. But the buck doesn’t stop there. Flying in the face of a country lacking housing, health and basic services, is Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu’s decision to lease two new aircraft for transporting VIPs, at a staggering R800 million. When South Africans voted a democratic government into power 17 years ago, they voted for democracy, and a better life for all. A better life is being had, but only by a privileged minority.

MINISTER of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka has come under fire for leading a lavish lifestyle at taxpayers’ expense, following

a Sunday Times report into the R2,5 million in state money he has allegedly spent on luxury hotels, limousines and overseas trips since 2008. In a country whose

No rotten eggs at my store WITH regards to the article (“Pensioner cries foul after purchasing rotten eggs”, People’s Post, 5 April), a lady came into my shop late one morning. She came up to me and told me that she bought a tray of eggs from me previously and that the eggs are rotten. I asked her where the eggs were and for the slip. She responded: ‘I don’t have the slip any more.’ She put two boxes of half dozen eggs on the counter with six eggs in each box. I said: ‘But Ma said Ma bought a tray of 30 eggs.” She said she put the eggs in those boxes. I then requested the slip that I gave her. She responded that she doesn’t have it any more. I said: “Sorry Ma, if you bring the slip I will check it and exchange the eggs. No slip, no exchange.’ She then shouted and got angry, throwing a tantrum and left. This lady has been living in the area for no longer than six months and I have seen her not more than

three times, whereas I have been living in the area and doing business here for over 30 years. This speaks for itself. I sell numerous trays of eggs every day and my customers are satisfied. With regards to the lady, I don’t even know her name or where in the area she lives, as I know all my regular customers who have been loyal and supporting me for years. When the lady came into the shop I was here, and my daughter and wife were at the neighbours house inquiring about her grandson who was hospitalised. My daughter never stands alone in the shop and my wife and I are always here. After the incident I have never seen the lady again, as she never returned with the slip. I have always had time for my customers and been offering them service for over 30 years now. I also never told her that I bought my eggs at Makro. RAFIQ KAMANDAN Hasina Cash and Carry

public representatives are often caught out enjoying too much of the good life, his particular blend of lavishness has a bit of a Hollywood ring to it.

Why bother to vote? AS CITIZENS of South Africa we are in for a big demise. The increased cost of living is surely hitting hard below the belt. Petrol, electricity, water, food, transport, identity documents, passports and all the basic things needed to survive are surely becoming a luxury to the poor people. How will we survive? Political parties are geared up for the up-coming elections. What are we actually voting for? Our final demise or a new party to control the country’s money? Politicians earn a fat, good salary while ordinary people are most times earning a pittance, living from hand to mouth. While millions of rands are spent on politicians’ salaries,

their overseas trips, their fancy five star accommodation, and all the financial perks attached to their packages, how can politicians expect people to go and vote on an empty stomach, not knowing what the future will hold? How can we be expected to believe politicians when their salaries are paid from taxes we have to sweat for. In fact they are living a luxury life on our suffering and do they care? It never ends. If we suffer from hunger or deprivation at least the politicians will survive, since their pay packets are guaranteed by our blood and suffering, so vote or no vote what for anyway? Very little effort is required – just buy your petrol/diesel/oil etc from someone else! JOHN RAYNER Bergvliet

BELIEVE it or not, ever since the Nigerian activist Ken Saro-Wiwa’s execution in 1995, during the Abacha regime, and the suspicion of Shell’s collusion, I have not filled up with Shell petrol. A small soap box upon which I stand, I know. Shell is again in the controversial limelight. This time it is in our backyard, and something in addition to petitions is needed. They wish to

Goal the same for Manuel and Giggs THE whole furore caused by Trevor Manuel’s letter to Jimmy Manyi has brought him (Manuel) into the limelight in a manner totally different to how he was portrayed in the last 20 years. Manuel has always been a political stalwart, without the corruption, greed and ignorance. Yet, although the coloured community was proud of one of their own being in such a powerful position and successful at it, he was really not seen as coloured, but as a member of the African National Congress (ANC). I know that this statement seems not to make any sense. Let me clarify. There were many situations and statements made whereby the coloured and Indian communities, although classified as black under Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), never received the benefits of this classification. Manuel, as part of the ANC, is automatically aligned to their policy through his membership and prominence within the party, therefore in agreement by association. His silence on it meant he agreed. This altercation with Jimmy Manyi changed all that. He came out in support of the coloured community with guns blazing, yet in a manner that does not take away from his character and honour. Finally he is seen as a coloured person. Now some might say that we should not focus on race. My question to you is: “In which country do you live? Have you been following the news lately?” This is all about race. A colleague of mine said that coloured people seem so complacent about politics, and I said it’s more apathy than complacency. Why is this? Tell me what has changed for the coloured community from apartheid to now? Absolutely nothing. So yes, they are despondent and looking for a leader amongst themselves. Is Trevor Manuel that leader? Now he could be. But how does he compare to a famous soccer star? He and Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) are in similar positions. Giggs is Welsh and plays for the most well-known English team, not a Welsh

People’s Post Athlone Page 13

one. He holds many records and is recognised as one of the world’s best players. Just like Manuel (within the ANC), he moved through the ranks of United and contributed to their victories. Yet Giggs, due to his allegiance to his country Wales, will never reach the highest glory of any soccer player, which is playing in the World Cup, because Wales never qualifies. This is exactly the situation with Trevor Manuel. As committed as he is to the ANC, and as commendable his contribution to the party is, he will never be President. So why does he remain with the ANC? Probably for the same reason that Giggs has never been tempted to give up his citizenship. Loyalty and years of tradition and history. Giggs will always be remembered as the Welsh guy who was a soccer hero in England, and Manuel will be remembered as one of the greatest coloured politicians in the ANC. When my children are parents and grandparents one day he will hopefully be remembered as one of the greatest politicians (without the race mentioned). Sometimes, however, we have to sacrifice what we feel is right for us personally for the greater good. It won’t be for the greater good for Giggs to change his citizenship to play for England, as it will only benefit him personally. But, what if Manuel started his own party? If he ever doubted the support he would receive from his own community before, he can rest assured that his stand against Manyi solidified his position amongst the coloured community. So, should he start a new party, or should he remain with the ANC? That remains to be seen, and only something that Manuel can answer himself. Whatever happens though, he has made his community proud. NOLENE JULIES Athlone

If they kill flies and mosquitoes they are harming your home environment as well, because you are inhaling these toxins. Make your own pure repellent which is safe for you, but will still get rid of those pesky insects and leave your home with a pleasant smell. You will need a quarter cup cider vinegar, a quarter cup rubbing alcohol (or unflavoured vodka), quarter cup distilled water, one teaspoon eucalyptus essential oil, one teaspoon pure citronella essential oil and two teaspoons peppermint essential oil. Be wary of wounded Lions Stormers forced to re-group after losing first Super Rugby match against the Queensland Reds TASMIN CUPIDO

THE reaction of the DHL Stormers team, who suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend, will dictate the team’s run for the rest of the Super Rugby competition. And head coach Allister Coetzee hopes his troops will take the loss in their stride, get up and learn from the mistakes made against the Australian outfit at Newlands on Saturday. “This is a long and tough competition, and it is crucial that the guys pitch with their A-game at each match,” Coetzee said. “We need to take this loss on the chin and stand up to produce better performances.” Unforced errors and ill-discipline marred the Stormers’ game plan in the 19-6 defeat to the men from Brisbane saw. The Reds, who dominated the lacklustre Cape side in all aspects of the game, were simply the better side on the day – Coetzee is the first to admit this. “We were not at our best; tactically the Reds were much better and their physical intensity was much higher – all credit to the Reds,” he said. TELLING TALE: Unforced errors marred the game of the DHL Stormers in their 196 defeat to the Queensland Reds at Newlands on Saturday. Here eighthman Duane Vermeulen loses the ball in a tackle by Reds front rower, James Slipper. Photo: Peter Heeger/Gallo Images cal kicks to put pressure on the men in navy blue. Stints in the sin bin for Stormers eighthman, Duane

Vermeulen, and hooker, Tiaan Liebenberg, also did not help them. “We couldn’t gain or keep any

momentum and playing with 14 men for 20 minutes of the match did not aid us, either,” Coetzee says.

Despite the loss, they remain in the top position on the South African conference log and third on the combined log. Now the Stormers will divert their attention to the MTN Lions, who they take on at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon. The last time the two sides met the Stormers came out 19-16 victors in their first match of the competition. John Mitchell’s side has had a spate of unfortunate, tightly-contested losses throughout the competition and will be looking to raise themselves from the bottom of the combined log. With nothing to lose, playing for pride in front of their home crowd, the men in red will put up a brave fight in the hope of turning the tables on the high-flying Stormers. Never afraid to run a risk, the men from Egoli will test the ever onsong Stormers defence, while a battle in the engine room can also be expected. Coetzee expects inside centre Jean de Villiers, who was a lastminute withdrawal from the Reds’ clash, to make his return against the Lions this Saturday.

City to host global fest

Phone: 021 713 9440 | Fax: 021 713 9481

THE Safa Cape Town is forging ahead with plans to stage an eight-nation international showpiece for under-20s – believing it will generate a huge financial spin-off for amateur soccer in 2012. So much so that the Safa CT application to run the event – in partnership with the City of Cape Town – has already been approved by the SA Football Association. Safa CT president, Norman Arendse, disclosed that the eight-nation championship will comprise the respective winners of the six Fifa Confederations Cup championships, the SA under-20s and an additional African team. “It is vital that we recognise under-20 soccer as a milestone for the development of our players. It is our responsibility as an amateur association to showcase this talent,” said Arendse. The blueprint for the 2012 championship comes on the back of the successful inaugural Cape Town International Challenge for under-20s that was hosted by the Safa CT and the city in 2010. Ghana, Brazil, South Africa and Nigeria vied for honours on the eve of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Ghana defeated Brazil 3-2 in the challenge final, watched by a 50 000-strong crowd at Cape Town Stadium – with the overall gate-takings from all matches allowing the city to contribute R600 000 to the coffers of the Safa CT. Arendse also disclosed that the Safa CT has secured increased financial support from other stakeholders to stage its senior and junior competitions this year. . Coca-Cola has agreed to increase its sponsorship for the Coke knockout Cup championships from R500 000 to R600 000. . Freeworld Coatings has upped its sponsorship for the club championships for under-11s and under-13s from R50 000 to R75 000. . Peace activist Mary Burton will patron the new Unity Cup for under-16 high school teams from various communities to the tune of R150 000 this year; and . Build It will sponsor junior tournaments in areas close to its branches across the Peninsula.

Brent’s making it happen BRIAN GAFFNEY

BRIAN GAFFNEY

RE/MAX Ultra Select

A

T age 30, Brent Carelse resists thoughts about hanging up his boots in the forseeable future – but rather focuses on what more he can aspire to achieve with Ajax Cape Town FC on the road ahead. What is uppermost in Carelse’s mind of course at the moment, is to help Ajax win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions title for the first time in its 11-year history. “I believe we can finish top if we stay focused and avoid complacency,” says Carelse, who has become no stranger on the champions’ rostrum. Carelse – eyeing a fourth winners’ medal – represented champions Mamelodi Sundowns (2006/2007), whereafter he shared in two of SuperSport United’s three consecutive league triumphs (2008/2009 and 2009/2010). Now Ajax could enhance their championship chances if they notch full points against Golden Arrows at Newlands Stadium on Friday (start 20:00). Carelse, buoyed by Ajax CEO George Comitis’ disclosure that he will sign the midfield maestro next season – after he came on loan from SuperSport in January – is expected to continue his rich vein of form for the Urban Warriors. “I was not only looking for a new challenge when I returned to Ajax from SuperSport, where I felt my game was stagnating because of my irregular appearances in matches. I also felt a need to settle in Cape Town with my family,” said Carelse. The presence of a versatile leftsided midfielder – who has thus far netted four goals for Ajax – has also brought out the best in the freescoring Thulani Serero and Khama Billiat. So often Carelse’s penchant for

engaging his pacey fellow players in quick one-two plays has allowed Ajax to prosper during their recent run of successes. The other motivation for Carelse is to be mentored by Dutch coach Foppe de Haan. “He is professional in his approach and a very honest coach. He constantly tells us that we are better players than what we think we are.” “De Haan’s one-on-one chats with each player really makes us believe in our abilities,” enthused Carelse. The Johannesburg-born Carelse is also thankful to his father Dougie Carelse – a former pro with Cape Town Spurs and Vereeniging Old Boys in the old Federation Professional League – for inspiring him to pursue a soccer career. “My dad insisted that I enrol at the School of Excellence in Johannesburg during my teens. “It was a tough experience but he encouraged me to persevere to ensure my future in the game. “He has always allowed me the freedom to do things my way on the field. But he will occasionally tell me what aspect of my game I need to improve on,” said Carelse junior, who first turned professional with Hellenic FC (then coached by Gavin Hunt) at age 17. But back to the showdown with Golden Arrows. Remember that it was Arrows that drew 2-2 with Ajax in 2007/2008 to deny Ajax the title on goal difference when the clubs tied on points. First choice custodian, Hans Vonk, is also ruled out by suspension and will be replaced by Andre Petim on Friday night. Good news for Ajax though, is that Clayton Daniels returns from suspension and that Saamehg Doutie is fit to play. . Tickets are on sale at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers branches. No tickets will be on sale at the stadium.
