Con hits streets REYANA STEYN

G

ATESVILLE shop owners are fuming at an alleged con artist who is doing the rounds pretending to collect money for a madrassah. The man, who dresses in full Islamic gear, approaches people and claims he is collecting on behalf of the Madrassah-tul-Ilm in Bonteheuwel. He has a list requesting R5 donations. “For about a year this man, known as Shaheed Daniels, has been asking for donations. Some customers suspected it was a scam and that he was taking the money for himself,” says Yusuf Osman, owner of Osman’s House in Gatesville. “I questioned him once and asked him how he was getting paid for doing this and he said he gets a commission for the lists he completes and I thought, that sounds fair enough.” Osman says there had been reports of people seeing Daniels shopping after he had collected money. “One of my staff members said she saw him in Vangate Mall after he collected money; they saw him take his family for lunch and his Islamic gear was removed.” Osman says Daniels collected money outside his shop almost every day. He later discovered that Daniels was using his name. “He was walking around with a letter stating that he had the permission of Osman’s Store to ask people for money. And that was when I knew something could be dodgy.” Osman confronted Daniels, asking who had given him permission to use his shop’s name. “He said that the person whom he was collecting money for, had given him the papers. I asked to speak to that person then, because surely I

should have been consulted, especially if my name is being used. I told him to get in the car and we can go to this person.” Daniels said he could not “at that moment” but would return later that day. He never did. Osman contacted an imam in Bonteheuwel and explained the situation. When the imam went to the address Daniels had supplied, it was discovered that there was no madrassah there. Imam Moegammad Colbie from the Netreg Islamic Society confronted Daniels about the madrassah. “I was concerned when I heard this man was collecting because we only have one mosque and one madrassah in the area and if there was any other madrassah, we would know about it. We went to investigate and found there was no madrassah. “Netreg is a poor community, and many people claim they are collecting for the area, but we would never send people out to the roads or door to door and the only people who will collect is the forum members of the Masjied and they have people who will donate money.” Colbie says when people give money they must be able to report where the money is going and there must be accountability and proof before money is given. “People should always try to contact the organisation and hear if the people are really collecting for them, because you never know where the money is going. And it is wrong to collect on behalf of children or an organisation, when the money is for yourself,” says Colbie. Osman bumped into Daniels again. “I got him one day outside Gatesville Mosque and confronted him again, and he was in such a rush to leave.” After further investigation, Osman discovered that the collection

lists had been printed around the corner from his store in Gatesville. Daniels had allegedly bought paper from a stationery shop and done the printing at a nearby internet cafe. People’s Post visited the internet cafe and the stationery store and they both confirmed doing business with Daniels. A woman from the internet cafe, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that she had typed the letter for him. Osman says Daniels hasn’t been back. “What hurts me is the fact that he is taking money from people who have worked hard for their money, and pensioners. Whenever pensioners were paid he would be collecting at the pay-out point.” Osman alerted Rygate Security and they are looking out for him. Abubakar Roman, a hawker, also claims that the money which is being collected is for Daniels himself. “We see him buying goods at shops with the money he collected and that’s not fair.” A resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says it’s “sickening” the way scams are doing the rounds. Saleem Bray, owner of Bargain Gas, says many people have given money to Daniels. “We all gave money, but we want to warn people to be careful, because people will come with all sorts of stories and sometimes it’s a con and people work hard for their money.” Tawfiq Ismail from Gatesville also gave money. “He operates on a bicycle and you still see him standing at Wembley, Elite or Shoprite. It’s sad that this could be a con because not only did I give money, but elderly people were giving him money too.” People’s Post drove past the areas Daniels is still known to be collecting money from, but he was nowhere to be found. Osman contacted the reporter

HREE thousand Manenberg residents put up a united front on Thursday in the first of a series of protests focused on the scrapping of the rent arrears of thousands of tenants living in the City of Cape Town’s council flats. The peaceful march, which started at the traffic circle in Manenberg Avenue, formed part of the Eers Kos, Dan Rent campaign and saw young and old take to the streets armed with posters asking the city to lower their rent and write off their rental backlog. Among the throng was Rachel Scheffers, a 63-year-old pensioner who owes the city over

In her neat but well-worn shoes, she chanted along with the assembled crowd and walked in the sweltering heat with her neighbours and lifelong friends. “When you know that you have so much debt, it gets to you,” the community volunteer says. “If I had the money to pay up, I would. But when you have to decide between paying for a flat, which you have loyally doing for 30 years, and feeding your family, the decision isn’t all that difficult.” The mother of four adults lives in a two-bedroom flat with her children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. “They are looking for jobs but can’t find any. I can’t throw them out – where will they go? I don’t

know what to do any more. “Where must I get enough money to look after my family, pay my grocery debts, put food on the table and buy electricity? I have no other option but to see that my children and extended family are fed before I see to anything else.” Scheffers says she applied for rent relief and was referred to the Athlone housing office, but still hasn’t received confirmation of whether or not her application was successful. “I regularly go to the Manenberg office but they don’t do anything for me. When they want their money, they want their money. But when you report problems at your home, they take their own sweet time to see to it. I have been waiting for three years for them

to fix my door and my windows are falling out of their frames.” Mario Wanza, the chairperson of Proudly Manenberg, says memorandums were handed to city representatives, who were given seven days to respond to the organisation’s demand for the scrapping of rent arrears, as well as giving ownership of council’s rental stock to the tenants “who have been paying rent for all these years”. “The level of employment is extremely high and up to 80% of residents are behind with their payments. If they want their arrears scrapped, they get sent from pillar to post and even if they give you a rebate, you are still expected to pay. Mense moet a plan maak even though they don’t have money. The people don’t want to pay any more. They want the homes they have paid for for up to 30 years.” Petitions drawn up in support of the campaign have seen 11 088 people stand behind Proudly Manenberg and Wanza says the numbers “will grow in the community as more and more residents have had enough of this abuse against the poor”. A regional manager for the city’s Existing Housing Directorate accepted the memorandum and committed to relaying the organisation’s demand for a meeting “as soon as possible”. The march formed part of a provincial campaign focusing on job creation, a solution to the housing backlog and the scrapping of rent arrears. Other organisations which have taken the campaign to their areas are the Mitchell’s Plain People’s Forum, the Hanover Park Civic Association and Lavender Hill Civic Association. “Our task isn’t just to find a solution for the people of Manenberg, but also for those from Heideveld, Bonteheuwel, Hanover Park and other areas which were given raw deals.”

Kewtown’s ‘mystery container’

Party for cricket THE Victoria Cricket Club will be hosting their fundraiser at the Victoria Clubhouse in Chukker Road, Kenwyn on Saturday 12 March. DJ Dino will hit the decks with drinks on sale at the clubhouse. The event will start at 20:30 and continue until 03:00.

EWTOWN residents – initially mystified by a steel container dumped in their area about two weeks ago, were shocked when the owners came to remove it yesterday.

Free disciples course THE Brothers Prayer Group of Athlone AFM Radiant Church is starting a free, 14-week bible study course on discipleship called “In the Arena”. It will take place every Monday from 7 March until 29 June at 19:45 at the Athlone AFM Church hall, on the corner of Dr Abduragman and Calendula Avenue in Kewtown. For more information contact Brothers leader, Quinton Jefferies on 083 344 5674 or Pastor Errol Parenzee on 082 299 0212.

permission to leave the container where it was. It emerged that the owner intended to use the container as a tuckshop. The city denied permission and the container has since been removed by the owner. Bullocks says that when the owner came and removed the container she swore at them. “When we confronted the woman and the men who were with her, asking why the container was placed there in the first place she began using foul language.” They then took the container and left. Charles Cooper, Media Officer, City of Cape Town, says the environmental health officers inspected the area at 10:40 this morning and found no container on site. “The site where the container may have stood is free of any health nuisance.”

THREE men charged with the murder of a 23year-old man appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The murdered man, whom People’s Post can only identify as Jawaad, tried to help a woman being assaulted by her boyfriend and was stabbed to death in a subsequent attack on Sunday 13 February. Two other men were also viciously attacked. The trio were outside Fast and Furious Foods in Gatesville when they intervened in a fight between a couple. About a hour after they stopped the fight, they were in Rylands outside another Fast and Furious Foods outlet when two cars pulled up, with eight men inside. The men all had knives, bottles and batons.

A stab wound to the heart and leg claimed the life of Jawaad, from Mitchell’s Plain. His father was stabbed three times in the shoulder and his uncle in the arm. The family has asked to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation. Jawaad, a father of two young children, was buried on Sunday 13 February according to Muslim tradition. Three men were arrested shortly after the murder and appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder last week. Two of the suspects were released on R1 000 bail and are expected to appear in court again on Thursday 19 May. The third suspect is being detained at Pollsmoor Prison and will appear in court again tomorrow for a bail application.

Bullocks demanded that the container be removed. Hardien added his voice. “We are urging the city to do something about this.” Their pleas were heard and answered when the container was removed yesterday. In addition, the city shed light on the mystery container and its owner. Grace Blouw, manager for Existing Housing for the City of Cape Town, says the Athlone Housing Office was first made aware of the container on Tuesday 8 February. “Once that happened, officials conducted an investigation to determine its origins. They established who owned the container and asked the City’s Law Enforcement Section to step in and issue a notice.” The notice was issued and the owner came forward to the Housing Office, appealing for

The residents were outraged at the unsavoury behaviour and activities the steel box attracted. Irate residents say drug peddlers were already basing themselves at the container, creating fear among nearby neighbours. Resident Isgak Hardien says people have been asking him to sort it out. “The container posed a massive threat to the community, who were afraid that some gang would try and take ownership of it and create more problems. People’s Post visited the site last Tuesday and found that the container on the corners of Springbok and Cross Boulevard roads was sealed with chains. The area reeked of urine. Law Enforcement was at the site on the same day and placed a notice, fining the owner R2 510, on the container. At that stage noone knew who the owners were. Juliana Adams, whose house is next to the container, was furious. “A lady came to place the container here with a crane and said that she will be back. We told her that she can’t place it here but she said that she had permission from the local housing office to place the container here. “It’s terrible. We can’t sleep at nights,” Adams complained. “People were here right through the night using drugs. It stinks here. People made a noise and urinated here and we have young children in this house, including two newborn children. It was a health hazard.” Mogamad Sardarie Bullocks, a resident and member of the South African Progressive Civic Organisation (SAPCO), blamed the City of Cape Town for the container being there. “The day the container was placed here we asked the city to remove the box, but they didn’t do anything. Residents had to sit with this mess for two weeks. We already have drugs and gangsterism in the area. ”

Cansa Relay for Life on track REYANA STEYN

T

HOUSANDS of people are gearing up and preparing for the third Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay for Life walk in support of cancer survivors and people diagnosed with the disease. The Cape Metro region of the Cansa Association of South Africa will be hosting the annual event at Vygieskraal Stadium on Friday 4 March. To celebrate the upcoming event, the first Cansa day celebration was held on Friday 4 February when various people from different organisations gathered and walked along the track. Among them were Cape Town mayor, Dan Plato, members of the City of Cape Town’s Social Development department, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA,) Athlone police, volunteers and cancer survivors and cancer-diagnosed people. “It was great to see all the people who supported the event on Friday,” says Adeliah Jacobs, the regional manager for the Cape Metro region of Cansa. “The aim of the Cansa Relay for Life is to encourage cancer-diagnosed people to keep on fighting and also to celebrate with cancer survivors and pay tribute to those who have passed on.” After the walk on the track, a candle lighting ceremony was held, where candles were laid out to spell the word “hope”. “Hope is an important element to people recovering and even survivors, and that’s why the mini candle lighting ceremony is impor-

tant,” says Jacobs. Athlone Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, says it important that police get involved in different parts of the communities to serve them. “This is a way we can build up a trust relationship with the community by showing interest in people’s lives. All people are challenged by illnesses such as cancer, and if we as police show empathy and show that we are not just there to arrest people and prevent crime, but also there to care for them and try and support them, then I think we can definitely address crime.” Jacobs says she is encouraging people to find out more about Cansa Relay for Life, but also to advocate for better services and participate in the event held in March. “It’s amazing when you see people coming out in numbers to be part of the event and the love and support they show each other.” For more information call the office on (021) 689-5347 or find them on Facebook under the heading: cansarelayforlife.

Mosque to mask mast MELISSA PAPIER

FIRST there were “palm-tree” cellphone masts in the middle of nowhere. Now cellular network, Vodacom, is installing cellphone masts inside the minarets of mosques. Already cellphone masts have been installed in mosques in Pelican Heights and Delft. If everything goes according to plan, the Al-Masjiduth Thaalith Mosque in Beacon Valley will be next in line. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is being conducted to establish the viability of building a cellphone mast inside the mosque’s minaret. The proposal has been given the green light by the mosque’s trust, says Meiraai Jacobs, chairperson of the AlMasjiduth Thaalith Mosque. “Earlier last year Vodacom made the proposal to the Al-Masjiduth Thaalith Mosque Trust and they gave consent for the mast to be built in the minaret,” said Jacobs. “The board decided it was feasible as there was a monetary contribution which is to be given to the mosque, should everything go according to plan and all procedures followed.” Jacobs added that the minaret was chosen because, at 22 metres, it is the highest point in Beacon Valley. If approved the mast will be built in the minaret, adding an extra six metres to the height and it will be enclosed, posing no disturbance to anyone,” he said. In earlier years minarets were used to make announcements and call worshippers to prayer. In the past the imam physically stood in these structures, calling people to prayers. Today many mosques use a sound system, where the speakers are placed in the minaret. Minarets are also seen as a marker

to indicate to worshippers where the mosque is. Jacobs said masts have been installed in mosques in Pelican Heights and in Delft, without any problems. Ward councillor for the area, Dennis Williams, said the idea of having the masts inside the minarets is “brilliant”. “Now there will be no more funnylooking masts all over the place. It’s a good thing as the mosque will be getting a stipend from the service provider for housing the mast. State your case THE City of Cape Town invites the public to comment on new draft regulations for the Western Cape Liquor Act before Monday 7 March. The regulations will increase the opportunity for public participation in the consideration, granting and possible cancellation of liquor licences throughout the Western Cape. “According to the draft regulations, the application procedures for liquor licences have been made stricter, and the public will be given more time – 28 days – to provide input on each application,” says Councillor Taki Amira, chairperson of the city’s Liquor Policy task team. Applications will need to be published in local newspapers, and be displayed in a prominent place at the proposed establishment. “This empowers affected communities with the necessary information to actively participate in the granting of licences. In the past, an applicant was merely required to lodge an application at a magistrate’s court before this was gazetted,” Amira says. The proposed regulations will also add substance to the 2010-amended Western Cape Liquor Act, such as setting time spans and determining volumes that may be purchased. The city’s task team will also be submitting comments on the regulations. “At the same time, we call on residents, civic organisations, ratepayers associations, neighbourhood watches and community policing forums to provide their input directly to the Western Cape liquor authorities,” Amira comments. The regulations are the final step before the new Western Cape Liquor Act comes into effect later this year, and before the City’s bylaw on trading days and hours, currently undergoing a legal review, comes into force. All information can be found at www.capegateway.gov.za.

Fighting crime together THE Nyanga Cluster Commander, Major General Robbie Roberts, hosted a meeting to discuss the community’s views on better ways to fight crime. Roberts’ area of jurisdiction includes Nyanga, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Philippi, Philippi East, Lansdowne and Athlone. He visited the area on Thursday and Monday and met various organisations at the Athlone Civic Centre and the Joseph Stone Auditorium. “The general invited all spheres of the community, from the education department, namely schools, to security companies and the religious sector,” says Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson. “He didn’t ask anyone to do extra work, but to do what is expected that will make them go the extra mile. “General Roberts pledged his commitment to serving the community and to ensure that the promise of service delivery is up held.” Roberts also invited his staff so he could spell out his vision, and remind them of their duty towards their community so they could also feel the enthusiasm the community about ending crime. “He will only be taking up his new post from Tuesday 1 March and has already shown a passionate commitment to the cause of making the Nyanga Cluster a safer environment for his community,” says

Garlandale is no bed of roses REYANA STEYN

GARLANDALE residents are irate over the lack of service delivery in the area. Issues such as a lack of street lights, blocked drains and parks which are not properly maintained were raised at a meeting at Garlandale High School on Tuesday. Hanif Loonat, cluster chairperson of the Community Policing Forum, says that residents feel as if they are being neglected. “There are many issues in this area which need to be addressed, and residents were quite vocal at the meeting,” he said. “Fire hydrants which are not working in the road are a huge concern for them. A woman died last year when a fire broke out, and it was partly because the fire hydrant was empty.” He says other issues include blocked drains. Residents also suffer when roads flood, especially in winter. “There are almost no street lights and the few that are there are not functioning properly,” says Loonat. “This is a major crime problem; residents’ lives are in danger as criminals

strike when there are no lights and this matter must be addressed.” Other issues raised were the trees on the pavements that have not been pruned and parks which were not maintained. “The residents said that the grass was really long and the play equipment in some of the parks were not in a working condition,” says Loonat. “Residents also want speed bumps in roads, as taxis fail to stop in 8th Avenue, 1st Avenue and Lascelles Street and they fear that an accident could happen.” Furthermore, concerns were expressed that traffic police aren’t visible in these roads, and that there is no security at the subway. Loonat says the fence leading to the M5 has holes in it, giving access to criminals. “The lack of signage on Klipfontein Road was also raised; streets which have never been cleaned, vagrants who are visible in the parks and the lack of sports facilities. “These people’s issues must be addressed as it seems they are forgotten, and we need to fix the area for them and their children,” says Loonat. People’s Post tried to gain comment from Pat Hill, the councillor for the area, but was unable to do so by the time of going to print.

were seized. The value of all the drugs is nearly R28 000,” says Lakay. “Six people were arrested for liquor related offences of which four were arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence,” says Lakay. In total 43 cases of beer were confiscated. Police also searched four schools in the area. “No arrests were made but the purpose of the search was also an awareness for learners,” says Lakay. Lakay also urges people to walk in groups, especially if they use open fields or public roads as many robberies have been reported. “Robberies occur and pedestrians must not make themselves victims by exposing valuables such as cellular phones as cellular phones are common items robbed. “Woman and youngsters walk and listen to music on cellular phones ... they are easy targets for robbers. “Residents are also requested not to park vehicles in streets as vehicles are being stolen and vehicles are being broken into,” he said.

MANENBERG police had various successes in the area, ranging from arrests for drug possession to arrests for dealing in liquor without a licence, from Friday 18 until Friday 25 February. “During the past weekend there were high density operations in the precinct, with one of the focuses being drug related offences,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. “There were 31 cases opened for drug related crimes. Four people have been arrested for being in possession of two parcels of dagga in Don Street, Manenberg. “One person was arrested for possession of drugs after a search warrant was executed in Thames Walk; 51 stoppe of dagga, 25 parcels of dagga and 52 Mandrax tablets were seized.” He says “one person was arrested after police received information regarding a person with drugs in his possession; 250 packets of tik

Losing your hair is a common side-effect of chemotherapy, which is why participants shave their heads as a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Colouring your hair has become an option for those who prefer not to shave. For more information about the Shavathon at Kenilworth Centre, phone Andreana Holmes or Suzette Searle on (021) 6715054.

IGHT women from the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children – survivors of gender-based violence – have been given a platform to share their personal battles with domestic and sexual violence. The women starred in a series of video diaries titled “Beyond the Shadow”, which was produced over a three-month period. The videos give an intimate look at what the women went through in their relationships, with each one telling her story in her own words. The Saartjie Baartman Centre (SBC) offers help to women and children who need to escape their abusive situations, providing them with shelter, food and emotional support. In “Beyond the Shadow”, the eight women take the viewer on a journey through their lives. Their ups-and-downs are all explored to promote awareness of the types of abuse that happens daily. The women were able to explore different ways in which they wanted their stories to be told. Being filmed wasn’t easy for them at first, but as they became comfortable, they were able to express their emotions clearer. “Doing the digital diaries, at first, made me

I felt humiliated because I didn’t want people to know what happened to me. “My challenge was that I could never do it alone; I always had someone with me because telling my story made me feel like I was going through it again,” says one of the women. Their identities cannot be revealed for safety reasons. Irma Maharaj, a researcher at SBC, says the women were put in a diary room where they could record their daily thoughts. “Just talking about their experiences helps them to deal with it. It lets other women in abusive relationships know that they are not alone and hopefully encourages them to pull out. “In the video we tried to mask their faces as much as we could and it won’t be shown as widely as we would’ve liked, for the women’s safety,” she says. Facilitated by filmmaker, Shelley Barry, the video diaries reflect the “real and unmediated experience” the women endured, some for years. As part of International Women’s Day, a screening of “Beyond the Shadow” will be held on Tuesday 8 March at The Labia in Orange Street, Cape Town, at 08:30 for 09:00. Highlights of proposed amendments LIFELINE TARIFF A new inclining block tariff has been introduced as recommended by the National Energy Regulator of SA (NERSA). Block 4 allows for lifeline customers exceeding the monthly permitted consumption of 450kWh due to bulk purchasing or seasonal variations to be charged at the new Domestic Tariff. FREE 50kWh Lifeline tariff customers receiving less than 450kWh per month will continue receiving the free basic supply of 50kWh. DOMESTIC SERVICE CHARGE The Domestic service charge no longer applies as it is now included in the energy charge. VERY LARGE POWER USERS (VLPU) These tariffs have been discontinued to align with the recommendation of NERSA to move to Time of Use Metering throughout South Africa. NEW 2 STEP DOMESTIC TARIFF The Domestic Low and Domestic High tariffs will be discontinued and be replaced by a new 2 step domestic tariff to align with the principles of the inclining block tariff. TABLE MOUNTAIN LIGHTS The current tariff is unrealistic and the new tariff will include the recovery of costs directly attributed to the lights. NOTE:

Monthly Service Charges calculated as Daily Service Charge multiplied by number of days in billing period.

The pilot project will be rolled out in the catchment area of the Kraaifontein Waste Management facility. OLD AGE HOMES Old Age Homes were previously billed for containers equating to a third of the number of living units and had to use the City as a service provider. Old age homes to be reclassified as non-residential and may choose the number of containers required or to use private sector service providers. DISPOSAL - LOOSE BODY VEHICLES Loose body vehicles to be charged at an averaged carrying capacity of the container and not the carrying capacity of the vehicle as is the current practice. Golden education SOME Western Cape educators have been rewarded for education excellence over the weekend – deservedly so. Among them are Norman Henshilwood principal David Millar, who won the National Teacher’s Award in the category Leadership in Excellence in a secondary school, and Surrey Estate Primary School principal, Imtiaz Adams, who was chosen Western Cape provincial winner in the category Leadership in Excellence in a primary school. Their achievements are phenomenal, given the countless challenges modern-day teaching presents. Topmost is technology, providing entertainment and information-on-tap, and arresting pupils’ attention. Worst, though, is the scourge of gangsterism and drugs in some city schools, which detracts from learning, making educators’ jobs fearful and stressful. It is fitting that education is a human right, as enshrined in our constitution and so key that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has allocated more than R189 billion to the sector for 2011-12. While government chalks up billions of rands and resources to education, and educators honour their roles, the commitment that matters most is that of pupils. Measuring commitment is difficult, but the facts speak. Yesterday was World Maths Day, but our nation had little to celebrate as 70% of matrics who wrote mathematics last year failed the subject, which is a requirement for most jobs. That said, it is inspiring to read stories like that of Johanna Barnes who, at 74, was the oldest candidate last year to write Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) exams. Since 2006, gutsy Barnes has been intent on getting her General Education and Training Certificate – and she’s only one mathematics literacy exam away from realising her dream. Her journey has been fraught with challenges, and continues to be. For her, education may be a human right, but not strictly an entitlement.

Where to from here? I AM a mother of three, staying at a shelter for almost a year and six months. The reason for us being at the shelter is because we’ve been victims of domestic violence for more than 14 years. Yes, the move to the shelter was a big step for us; not knowing what to expect, an unknown, unfamiliar place, but it changed our lives for the good. We’ve all had counselling, which we really needed. I, myself, have been empowered with a lot of skills. I attended workshops, support groups and many more to make me assertive and prepare myself for a better future. I am very grateful and thankful for all that opportunities. I stayed in the shelter for four months, after which I applied for second stage. That was a great achievement for me, although I knew it was just for a certain period of time. My great concern now is my time at the shelter is long overdue.I am unemployed and need accommodation. I’ve got nowhere to go, no family support and the question I ask myself: “Where to from here?”The government supports us in many ways, having shelters available with

very good services, counselling, workshops etc. but where they fail us is when it comes to leaving the shelter. Yes, you’ve been empowered but it’s difficult to get a job. So how can you afford a house if you are not financially stable? Are you forced to go back to your abuser/ perpetrator or are you going from one shelter to another? They become diffident because their life is unstable and that causes them to have a low self-esteem. Is that what we as moms want? No. We’ve come so far, and I mean, every parent has this dream all the time, because it doesn’t mean because you were abused you must stop dreaming. I’ve seen many clients that I befriend, come back after a few months of going through the same abuse, because they were forced to go back. What’s the use of having all the services available but there’s no happily ever after? I want to appeal to government, please not to stop at shelters. We need to know: “Where to from here?” If anybody can assist me with a job or accommodation please contact me on 078 145 2453. TÈCHIAH SEPTEMBER Athlone

Apology to all Andaaz customers THE most unfortunate incident happened on Thursday 18 November, the day after Eid. I was on my way to open my shop when I got a phone call to say the shop’s gates had been welded closed. Later the same morning, the landlord broke into the shop (without any court order or sheriff) and took possession of all my stock, including all my customers’ things, and invoice books. I have no means to contact anyone, except to leave contact details with the shop next door. The landlord’s reason for doing this is because we owe him an outstanding balance of rent. This is true, and is due to slow business, but he had no right to do this, which in South African law is called theft.

But according to the landlord, he doesn’t respect South African law and did this the Egyptian way (taking the law into his own hands). Three months later, I’m still in court trying to get possession of all customers’ and my goods. Our next hearing date is Monday 7 March at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court. I ask all customers please try to understand and pray for us. Give us some support which we had from you all the years. Anyone who needs to contact me about their stuff or for any stitching needs feel free to contact me on 073 1696 456. My humble apology for any inconvenience. ANDAAZ BUTT Gatesville

Mulder downs Falcons GLENTHORN pitcher Lauren Mulder recorded a rare no-hitter to shut out Falcons SAPS in a Western Province Super League softball match on Saturday. Mulder fanned one batter and allowed a walk to frustrate Falcons in the six inning’s match at the City Park Sports Complex. Glenthorn scored the decisive run in the fifth inning when Courtney Stevens’ hit scored Alex Fortune. Stevens batted 1-3, Deidre Sasman 1-1, Fortune 1-2 and Mulder 1-2. Falcons pitcher Megan Fillmore fanned one batter and conceded a walk before being replaced by Nicky Jones, who faced one batter to finish the match. This win keeps Glenthorn and Westridge Yankees – with two matches to go in the league race – tied on 28 points after 16 matches at the top of the log. Glenthorn will face Old Mutual Cubs, while Yankees – who beat Cubs 7-1 at the weekend – will challenge Falcons at 18:30 at City Park on Saturday. Wins for Glenthorn and Yankees in their penultimate league matches will see them meeting in a league decider on Saturday 12 March.

Tough tussle awaits Stormers TASMIN CUPIDO

IT WILL be a battle up front when the DHL Stormers take on the Toyota Cheetahs in the third round of the 2011 Super Rugby competition at DHL Newlands on Saturday afternoon. And despite the Stormers managing to pip the Lions 19-16 in their opening match last weekend, Allister Coetzee and his team will need to focus on getting the team to work as a unit. A “rusty” and unorganised display of rugby was produced by the Stormers in the first half, with John Mitchell’s men surprising the men from the Cape with a fast and attacking game plan. Leading 9-8 at half-time, with only Lions’ centre Waylon Murray having visited behind the tryline and all the Stormers points coming from the boot of flyhalf Gary van Aswegen, the Stormers returned to the field without their gutsy leader Schalk Burger, who suffered a blow to his knee during the first half. Pieter Louw replaced Burger and was influential throughout the match, tackling like a demon, dominating at the breakdown, scoring the men in navy blue’s only try and calling the shots in the battle between the loose forwards. But the Lions showed heart and determination, with the match finishing four minutes into injury time. They set up more than 15 phases from the Stormers’ 22, in an attempt score a try and break the hearts of the Stormers and their fans. But the Stormers managed to steal the ball in the loose with a wobbly Dewaldt Duvenhage pass being kicked over the sideline by fullback, Conrad Jantjes. And coach Coetzee was the first to admit that his team did not play to their full potential. “I am happy with the win. One can rectify mistakes and system errors, but you cannot coach guts, never giving up and refusal to be defeated,” he said after the match.

“Derbys are tough and we did well to hold them out. It’s difficult to bye in the first week of the competition. We looked rusty, but when it mattered, we pulled through. The team has matured and gained a lot of experience.” And that experience will have to be proved against the Cheetahs on Saturday. The men from Bloemfontein were unlucky to lose 23-25 to the Vodacom Bulls at home last Friday evening, after leading 23-8 at halftime. In the process, they also lost captain Juan Smith, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon and is in doubt for the rest of the season. However, his replacement, Ashley Johnson, reigned supreme in the company of big names such as Pierre Spies, Deon Stegmann and Dewald Potgieter. He was awarded the man of the match award in the end. Johnson, originally from the Cape, will be looking to show his worth to Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské, by building on last week’s performance. Flanker Kabamba Floors also impressed on defence, while the always-grinding tight five gave the players in the Bulls engine room a run for their money. If the Stormers want to secure the win and an invaluable home bonus point, they have to revert to the running rugby their supporters became accustomed to last year. While the forwards have been securing possession in the loose, the ball seems to be dying in the backline. Perhaps backline coach, Robbie Fleck, should consider selecting star prospect Juan de Jongh at centre, breaking the conventional Springbok centre pairing of Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie. De Jongh was instrumental in the Stormers’ road to the final last year, also getting a Springbok call up. He impressed when he was brought on in the last 20 minutes and his agility and attacking and defensive play, as well as his ability to step, is missed in a rather one-dimensional Stormers outfit.
