arents were able to see the fruits of their children’s labour at Steenberg High School last weekend, in an exciting showcase of young, local talent. On Saturday 29 February, the children who form part of Astrid Abrahams’s community initiative programmes were able to perform what they had learned over the past year in a variety show. The initiative was founded in Hillview where Abrahams enables children from the community to express themselves through
various activities. She teaches a ballet class, choreographs the Hillview Drumline and Indian dancing groups, all while offering children a healthy and safe outlet. These initiatives, she told People’s Post previously, have also created unity among the children who were previously considered rivals (“Drumline brings children together”, People’s Post, 28 January). “Everybody who is here, is here to support these children. We have to do something so that we can help them become something one day – so that they don’t become a statistic,” said Abrahams at the showcase. Harriet Maarman, whose granddaughter Tatum Maarman is part of the Indian dancing group, is very happy that there is a group
such as this for the children. “She hasn’t been in the programme for long – only a month. She didn’t do anything before she started with them but she has always loved to dance. It’s good for her because she’s very happy when she’s dancing.” Tatum and the rest of the group performed a dance at the showcase and invited their parents on stage to join in the fun. Another performer on the day was Genevieve Crowe, who goes by the stage name Lil Miss G. The spunky eight-year-old performed a hip hop dance routine for the audience and stunned the crowd. Her mother, Lisa Crowe, said: “She started dancing when she was six. She started dancing with friends of mine, they go by the name

Retwist. My friend from the group choreographs for her, but at the moment she doesn’t dance with any groups.” They have started a Youtube channel for the promising young dancer to spark interest in her talent and, hopefully, to help her realise her dream. Genevieve said: “I go to Steenberg Primary School. My friends and I make up dances and do videos. I want to go to America and I’ve already got $1, just $1. But I want to go dance and live in America.” This year Abrahams hopes to continue to empower the children and keep them off the streets. V To assist the initiative, contact Astrid on 061 720 9734.
