LAVENDER HILL
Planting seeds of hope RACINE EDWARDES RACINE.EDWARDES@MEDIA24.COM @RAEEDWARDES

he Village Growers are making a mark in their community; turning a space known for anti-social behaviour into a place of hope. The group, which is made up of about 10 men from Lavender Hill, has developed their knowledge of plants to transform a once rundown park in St Andrews Road. After removing burnt tires and litter from the grounds, they began a vegetable garden, started a small worm farm, built a chicken coop and planted trees to beautify the space. Leanne Reid is the founder of Learning in Reach, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that provides foundational educational support in disadvantaged communities. Reid explains how she met the group while assisting a local teacher to set up an early childhood development centre adjacent to the park. “We met the Village Growers when they started greening just a corner of the park, at about the same time that we began setting up the centre in this building in March last year,” she says. “Their whole focus is really to green this park and make it really beautiful. “Last Mandela Day (18 July), we got some funding and brought in someone to teach them to do worm farming; so the worm farming can then feed compost into the green space. “They also started some vegetable gardening and they built these vegetable boxes themselves. But their main focus up until now has been getting the soil right,” Reid adds. Denver Spiers, a member of the Village Growers, says: “We started to form Village Growers and it took us about a year.” He adds that most of them were unemployed at the time. Fellow group member Mario Leonard adds: “We were sitting here and thinking, ‘Can’t we do something here? Look how ugly this place looks; every day we sit in this mess.’ “So then we started cleaning and cleaning, and now it looks like this.” Spiers explains that their initiative has brought about a change in the community.

Gilliano Johnson of the Village Growers shows a boy from the adjacent ECD centre how to plant a slip from a tree. “There were heaps of rubble here; people would just come and dump, so we’ve banned them from dumping here. Then, after planting that first tree, we never looked back,” Spiers says. Reid came on board shortly after they began their work, assisting them to formalise the project and find backing. Jenny Louw, the author of the blog Earth Artist and a garden landscaper, is also involved in the project. She assists and con-
sults with the group on ways to landscape the park. On Thursday 17 September, the City of Cape Town did their part to contribute towards the greening of the park. Jan Botes, coordinator for the City’s nursery in Newlands, told People’s Post that the City donated four types of trees to the park in celebration of Arbor Month. “They’re getting two wild camphor shrubs; a very wind-resistant species and it grows in

this beach sand naturally so they’ll stand up to the wind and create a bit of a barrier. “They also got a carob tree which bears pods and that’s okay for people to eat and even for chicken fodder for their chickens. Another one they wanted was a Milkwood tree and we decided to bring in another kind of fig tree.” The tree-planting event was one of three held in Lavender Hill, and many more around the city, during Arbor Month.
