E
ight out of the 30 gender-based violence (GBV) hotspots in South Africa are in Cape Town (Annual Crime Report 2019/2020). Almost 50% of assaults committed against women over a one-year period from 2018 to 2019 were by someone they knew and one in five women over the same period had experienced physical violence by a partner (Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey 2018/19). Dr Arlene Adams of the City of Cape Townâs Mayoral office shared these statistics at the launch of the new Philisa Abafazi Bethu (Pab) Family Centre on Wednesday 25 November. The launch of the community activism organisationâs new centre came not-so-coinci-

dentally on the first day of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign to highlight the role that the centre will play in supporting victims and survivors of such heinous crimes. Speaking at the centreâs launch, Lucinda Evans, founder of Pab, said: âI want to say to all of you, be welcome in this healing space. I want to give deep thanks that we are here today. Ten years ago, I wrote on a piece of paper in my garage â I envisioned this place, I dreamt this place. It is exactly what I visioned on this paper, down to the colour, down to the shape.â The organisation has, for more than a decade, worked in Lavender Hill, providing safe spaces and homes for victims of sexual crimes; educating youth on sexuality, drugs and gangsterism; supporting abuse victims; activating communities to protest where action is needed; driving difficult cases through the justice system; and fighting for equality for all, among other things.
Their new home at Sullivan Park in Steenberg provides more space than they had previously at the back of Lavender Hill High School â and much more than when Evans ran operations from her home â to continue the fight for justice; Dr Adams added: âThis is not just your problem, or my problem â itâs a problem we all face in our cities and nationally. We thank Philisa Abafazi Bethu for the work theyâre doing by working with victims of GBV. This is a huge task!â The acting United States of America (USA) Consul-General Will Stevens shared his journey with Pab at the event, expressing his gratitude for being part of this project and the important work the organisation is doing. âLetâs be clear, gender-based violence is not a South African problem â it is a global problem. And we can learn from each other. To solve it, it takes partnerships, it takes working together as we have worked together to make this happen,â he said.

The project, as each representative mentioned, came together through important partnerships. Coca-Cola Peninsula Beveragesâ (CCPB) recognised the Pab Family Centre as its flagship corporate social investment project for this year. Together with Rotary Club Newlands, the US Consulate, Breadline-Africa, the Western Cape department of social development and the World Childhood Foundation, the dream of Evans to have a fully-fledged community centre has been realised. While it is not yet fully complete, Evans is excited to begin work in a new space which has all the amenities she and her team could want, including their very own safe house for victims of GBV and LGBTQI+ victims. Visit the Peopleâs Post Facebook page to take a look inside the family centre.
