Eat dinner with guide dogs The South African Guide-dogs Association for the Blind will host its third annual gala dinner at Kelvin Grove in Newlands on Saturday 14 October at 19:00. It is aimed at celebrating World Sight Day. The association appeals to the public and businesses to support the event by buying a seat or hosting a table of ten for the evening of fun and entertainment. Tickets cost R700 each and booking is necessary. Sponsorship is also welcome. All the proceeds will benefit the association.

There will be entertainment and dinner to enjoy and some furry companions will join guests.

Teagan Schwerin, the association’s marketing manager, says: “The gala dinner is our biggest and most important event which raises awareness and substantial funding needed to train more working dogs for Cape Town.

There is no better occasion than hosting this event in commemoration of World Sight Day which this year falls on 12 October.

helmeredene de Gersigny (84) forgets about her age and climbs the hills of Table Mountain National Park to save our natural environment from alien plants.

She and her friends started doing it in 2009. From this group she is the only person remaining who hasn’t considered changing her priority.

De Gersigny is one of the six finalists in the People’s Post Spec-Savers Community Champions Elders Awards. She was nominated by her grandson for the role she plays in protecting the local environment and for being an inspiration for others to start caring for nature.

Her grandson Sean Pitcher says: “My granny has always loved the outdoors and has been an avid mountaineer. Her passion for the mountains led her to start the alien hacking group Kloof Corner Hackers when she was 75 years old. The goal was to clear the lower slope of Table Mountain of alien vegetation. She and her friends have been very dedicated and almost a decade later “they have been rewarded with intensive new indigenous growth in this area”.

De Gersigny still spends all her Saturday mornings with a group of friends removing alien plants.

She jokingly tells People’s Post that while her knees have started “whispering that their years are gone”, her love for the environment keeps her going. She likes the challenge of climbing up the hills and taking walks as it also benefits her physical wellbeing.

“The big love of my life is the environment, plants and all that they stand for. In 2009 I observed with increasing alarm a rapid takeover of fynbos by port jacksons and this compelled me to act. The Mitchell’s Plain Crisis Forum was one of these organisations.

“This list calls for real, on the ground, community action. But not the kind of senseless action like throwing of stones or burning of tyres that gets nothing done,” she says.

Fredericks says a change must be made.

“This could be the list of the top students in our country or the list of most talented

sports girls and boys or just a list of 61 of our beautiful, innocent children. Instead, this list of 61 contains the names of children who were never given a chance because their lights were blown out in the most horrific manner possible, by the hands of the most evil rapists and murderers this country has ever encountered,” she says.

Fredericks says they will not stop here.

She calls on residents to join them in continuously opposing bail, not only in murder cases but rape cases as well.

Wednesday last week was one such day, when the forum took to the Mitchell’s Plain

court to oppose bail in the recent rape case involving a five-year-old Tafelsig girl.

“The forum demands that the accused be kept in solitary confinement to ensure his face is healed and no further assaults take place. This is in the interest of justice. The victim is a child and we need to provide her the opportunity to start the healing process speedily and this can only be done once the bail application is dealt with and the trial starts,” she says. “[The forum] demands a no-bail rule across all rape and murder cases involving women and children.”

Park’s lookout deck is almost ready C

onstruction of the lookout deck in the Westridge Park biodiversity garden is well on its way.

Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South), conducted a site visit to monitor the progress of construction of a timber pergola and lookout deck in the garden last week.

The City of Cape Town’s environmental management department, together with the recreation and parks department, is constructing the pergola and deck totalling more than R500 000.

“This project involves rehabilitating the existing dune in Westridge Park by planting endemic vegetation and creating an outdoor educational biodiversity garden to showcase indigenous, water-wise planting that displays the region’s biodiversity and demonstrates responsible environmental and gardening practices,” says Andrews.

“Constructed at a cost of R553 000, this project is being implemented in phases and includes clearing the dune of existing alien vegetation, constructing timber boardwalks to formalise the desired lines and pathways on the dune, constructing a mosaic wall seating area, constructing a covered lookout point at the top of the dune, planting indigenous endemic vegetation on and around the dune, and installing interpretive signage and interactive displays. The covered lookout point at the top of the dune should be completed before the end of September.”

The aim of the project is to create an attractive and accessible destination point within Westridge Park and to create interest and allow for education in an entertaining and absorbing manner for visitors who may not normally visit botanical gardens.

NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain Public participation is currently underway for a draft plan to manage dune systems and beaches.

The City of Cape Town’s proposed maintenance management plan (MMP) looks to manage various coastal processes, including erosion, accretion and wind-blown sand.

Due to the nature of Cape Town’s coastline, public infrastructure such as roads and walkways close to the coastline are frequently either smothered with wind-blown sand or undercut by erosion, the plan states.

The dune and beach MMP will give best practice guidelines for managing the city’s dunes and beaches, says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

It will provide proactive legislative approvals for doing maintenance that might be required for managing the beaches and infrastructure affected by dunes.

“The city has an extensive coastline which is highly dynamic and is one of Cape

Town’s most valuable socioeconomic assets. Paradoxically, the coastline can also be a source of risk to the city in the form of storm surges, wind-blown sand and migrating dunes.

“For these reasons, it is important that the City manages dunes and beaches according to best practice with the view to optimise its social, environmental and economic value,” he says.

The plan will be applied to all the beaches as necessary, Herron explains.

“The MMP will improve the manner in which the City manages its dunes and beaches. It will also expedite dune and beach maintenance and management, and reduce costs, as individual MMPs will no longer be required and which can be costly and time-consuming in developing,” he says.

Nature trips for kids after fun day

group of children from Eastville Heights have been given a taste of oldschool fun and games at an annual initiative to mark the start of spring.

Local organisation Purpose Driven People Community Projects launched the Kidz Time initiative in 2015. It was changed to the Nature Squad in March this year.

“The main aim of the organisation is to pinpoint the holistic and pertinent needs of the community and the focus of Kidz Time was mainly on bringing back old fun by playing games and children’s interactions in sports activities. On Wednesday 8 March, the name was changed to the Nature Squad because there was a need to show children of the community the importance of nature,” says Zaahirah Kemp of the organisation.

The initiative was started to combat social ills and teach children the importance of positive influences.

“Children in the community only know what they are exposed to every day [which is] gangsterism and drugs. Social media does not offer anything to occupy the free time of children like games or sports. Children don’t realise how important nature is to us and how we won’t be able to survive without it.

“By doing this programme, we want to inform children and keep them active and healthy at the same time, also pulling their focus away from the heartache and danger they see and face almost every day,” says Kemp.

The Nature Squad was closed during Ramadaan and exams and also due to winter, but it was revived on Saturday 9 September to host a special spring-themed event.

“The spring celebration was a welcoming for the children and an introduction to spring. We organised a day filled with fun game activities, such as dancing, racing and bag races,” says Kemp.

Around 200 children from the community attended, among whom were the 60 Nature Squad members.

Neighbours also got involved with refreshments and the control and handling of the event.

“Zubeida Kemp and her family were big supporters, offering to make huge pots of soup for the children and help hand out party packs. Rashieda Gallie also assisted in the park with the control of the event,” says Kemp.

The event was held in Botha Park and was a success despite a lack of support, says Kemp.

“The youth are being dragged deeper and deeper into gangsterism and drugs. By reaching out to them, we are hoping that we can decrease crime in our area and at least save some kids from the horrors of what we face every day,” says Kemp.

The organisation is planning regular activities for October and November and will focus on nature and educational interactions.

A hike in the Wolfgat Nature Reserve is planned for December.

The organisation is in the process of registering. Its board consists of Marshaline Lewin, founder and director, Nuraan Kemp, secretary, Rachel Reeves treasurer, Collin Lewis and Claude Jacobs, additional members, Marshay Lewin, Alexander May, Sydney Meyer, Garunisa Magite and Kristen Harris as marshal leaders and Zubeida Kemp, Sadia Salie, Meagan Williams, Shareefa and Rashieda Gallie as permanent volunteers.

Kids clean beach to preserve M

ore than 500 learners of 18 schools in Cape Town took to Strandfontein beach on Saturday to celebrate this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day event organised in partnership with the Woolworths educational programme, Plastics SA and the City of Cape Town.

The beach cleanup marked the 11th year that the partners have involved learners in the commemoration of this important day that raises global awareness of the impact of human pollution on our oceans and waterways.

Plastic remains the most serious pollutant of the seas, killing more than a million birds and over 100 000 seals, turtles and whales, as well as an immense number of fish annually.

Studies estimate that as much as 8m tonnes of plastic is dumped in oceans around the world every year.

The top ten items picked up at International Coastal Cleanup Day events are plastic bottle caps and bottles, plastic straws and

sticks, food wrappers, plastic bags, cigarette filters, ropes, fishing line, glass bottles and plastic cups and plates.

As part of its focus on sustainability, the Woolworths education programme collaborates with Plastics SA to give learners a hands-on experience of being part of a global movement to care for the environment and take action to protect our beaches and oceans.

Cleanup events were also held on popular Durban and Port Elizabeth beaches.

More than 300 schools in each region were invited to get into the cleanup spirit.

Additional interest and awareness was generated by the beachfront exhibits of other event partners.

WWF-Sassi promoted the vital environmental goals of sustainable fishing and encouraged families to purchase responsibly sourced fish, while the Marine Stewardship Council highlighted the importance of preserving water sources.

ater this month, police officers will swop out combat boots for karate belts as they compete in a national competition.

The martial arts team, representing the Western Cape at a national police martial arts competition in Mpumalanga from Monday 25 to Saturday 30 September, is an ensemble of police officers from Mitchell’s Plain, Woodstock, Pinelands, Hout Bay, Rondebosch, Mfuleni and Eerste River and from as far as Barrydale, Stillbaai, George, Wellington, Swellendam, Robertson and Mokweni. Other officers were also stationed at the provincial office and on the president’s protection service.

The officers all travelled to Yellowwood Primary School in Tafelsig for a week of training, arranged by sector commander

and black belt Captain Raymond Solomons.

In appreciation to the school, the team held a demonstration and life skills activity for the learners in Grades 5 to 7.

“The police are not just there to fight crime and arrest people. In the police we also have sporting codes and this is the team from the Western Cape that will compete in the nationals,” says Solomons.

He was accompanied by sergeants Clive Solomons and Conroy Williams who motivated the learners to stay in school.

“I worked with the gang unit and the things I had to see were not good. I saw young children being shot, shooting at us and whom we had to shoot. It is not nice, and the feeling is something I can’t explain,” says Williams.

Captain Solomons told learners: “We want to present this to you but we also want to warn you.”

The group will participate in a range of disciplines, including full contact karate, semi-contact karate, kick boxing, karate demonstration and judo.

The officials presented principal Donovon Senosi with a certificate in gratitude for allowing them to use their hall.

“I want to thank Captain Solomons for always being here for our school. He really is a pillar of strength in the community and we feel very safe knowing he is here, even when I don’t ask him to be,” said Senosi.

Captain Solomons is the sector commander of the area and also offers free classes to the learners during the week.

Networking event for youth L

ibraries are rich sources of information on careers available to learners, matriculants or even those who are looking for a change of pace, and in light of this, the City of Cape Town has held a host of career-focused exhibitions at its libraries.

“Our libraries offer more than just books and other materials about the myriad career options available. We provide career exhibitions, outline the best way to job-hunt, and host workshops on CV preparation.

“For example, later this month there is a youth unemployment workshop at the Parow Library as well as youth networking events at the Tafelsig and Weltevreden Libraries. While these may seem like simple steps, they lead to greater possibilities,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

Two libraries recently hosted successful events with a career expo at the Bellville South Library and a skills workshop for job hunters at the Wesfleur Library.

And this week such an event will be held in Tafelsig.

“One of the main motivators for these in-

terventions is the high unemployment rate among young people. These events make it easier for them to access the information they need in order to gain skills and find a job. With the library events, you can gain insight into possible careers and identify the skills needed to become successful in your chosen profession,” says Smith.

A youth networking event will be held at Tafelsig Library on Friday. It will also cover CV preparation.

“Many young people are not only unaware of the employment opportunities available, but also don’t know how to access those opportunities.

“Libraries provide a wealth of information on how you can make the connections and find the path to a career, enabling you to become an economically productive member of society. I urge young people to make use of these opportunities and learn as much as possible from their local library. The world is our oyster and the library is the door that leads to it,” says Smith.

Prayer walk ‘the solution’ SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121 The Community Prayer Movement held its monthly prayer walk in Beacon Valley last week.

A group of about 20 people came together to walk a block of streets on Thursday, starting and ending at the Beacon Valley Pentecostal Church in Imperial Primary School.

While walking they said prayers and sang together, before stopping at a point to ask for relief from violence and crime, among other issues.

Police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams says they are fortunate to have partnered with the initiative since its inception.

Williams adds that the area is one of the

hotspots for shootings and crime.

“We want to see this [initiative] grow and snowball and we want more churches to get involved or start their own initiatives,” says Williams.

He adds that initiatives like these are the solution to social ills.

“We need to catch our youth because our youth are falling through the cracks and our churches need to become more community-minded. It is no use there are 200 people coming to the church but there is crime going on around it,” he says.

The initiative is held monthly and is organised based on the needs of the community.

itchell’s Plain police are urging residents to remain alert following a recent spate of house break-ins in Morgenster and Westridge.

According to witness reports, it is alleged that four neatly dressed men have been seen around the area.

“The suspects knock on the victim’s doors to determine if people are home. They then break into the houses with crowbars. In many instances safety gates are forcefully removed before the thieves make off with flat-screen televisions,” says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams.

“The group is believed to be making use of different vehicles. In one report the thieves were carrying clipboards as if they were doing surveys.”

Dagga found in Tafelsig home A 52-year-old man was arrested on Monday last week at 16:30 when officers searched a house in Baviaanskloof Street, Tafelsig.

While searching the premises police found 231 packets of dagga, four parcels of dagga wrapped in newspaper, 3kg loose dagga and

17 dagga cigarettes.

The drugs were confiscated.

The man was arrested for possession of dagga.

He has since appeared in court.

Police believe the man is not a gangster.

Fines at AZ Berman check Officers issued 10 fines during a joint operation along AZ Berman Drive on Friday between 10:00 and 13:00.

Mitchell’s Plain police, in conjunction with Law Enforcement, held the operation in the form of a vehicle checkpoint, focusing

on car checks, road worthiness and searching for illegal items, including drugs, firearms and stolen property.

A total of 27 vehicles were searched and 10 traffic fines were issued to the value of R11 500.

Attend seminars to find courses, jobs after matric The Youth Unemployment Prevention Project will host its annual post-school opportunities seminars soon.

At the seminars the project’s workers will help matriculants make informed career choices and assist them with applications for further study and funding for further study before applications close at the end of the month. They will also help with employment opportunities for those wanting to work next year.

Matriculants will hear about more than 12 000 study opportunities available at UCT, UWC, CPUT, False Bay College, Northlink College and College of Cape Town, and more than 5000 training opportunities available through learnerships and other work-based training opportunities, as well as where and how to apply for bursaries and funding for further study.

Matriculants who plan to work next year will hear about the various jobs for matriculants offered by over 30 businesses, and how to apply for these jobs.

Matriculants will also be able to have oneon-one sessions with advisors to help make

realistic career choices and to assist them with completing applications.

Participants should bring certified copies of their IDs, proof of address and Grade 11 final, April and June exam results.

The seminars are free and parents are encouraged to attend.

The seminars are open to all. High school learners as well as youngsters with matric are welcome to attend to find out more about the opportunities available to them.

The seminars will take place at Lydia Centre, District Six on Saturday from 10:30 to 14:30, at Spine Road High on Tuesday 26 September from 13:30 to 16.30 and at Lydia Centre, District Six on Saturday 7 October from 10:30 to 14:30.

lthough there have been five lead singers and more than 20 changes in the backing line, the standards are higher than ever.

The Drifters’ lead singer, Ray Lewis, along with his three bandmates, will be drifting to Cape Town in May next year. Their excitement is palpable.

In an exclusive interview with People’s Post, Lewis said he was “coming home to the motherland”.

“I love the Cape Town audience. I could put them all on a massive plane, bus or a train and take them all home to live with me,” says Lewis.

Although the Drifters have performed in South Africa before, the band members have since changed. But the music will still be as good, if not better, Lewis says.

He auditioned for the lead role in the 1970s and is the only surviving member of the band from that time.

“I had a very hectic audition, three in fact.

It was a progression of interviews that were very nerve-racking,” says Lewis. “I always wanted to sing but never knew I would get the opportunity to do so professionally.”

Since then new backing singers have come and gone, and this is what lent itself to the name the Drifters, an ode to the group’s constant changes.

Lewis started his singing career as many do, singing in the church choir.

“I always enjoyed singing and entertaining but I never knew I could make a living singing so I stayed in school and went to college for engineering.”

He heard about the audition and “jumped at the opportunity”, he says.

“I did not think about anything. Not even

“I love it. I have such a passion for this and I would like to believe it is a mutual exchange between the people and me. They enjoy the music, and I enjoy bringing it to them. But passion and love are key,” he says.

“I am a people’s person. I love people and believing that I can help, and I love being the first person to help anybody and that is very important,” he says. “It doesn’t matter what car you drive or how much money you have in your pocket or how big your house is. You can be just as miserable in a golden cage.”

Over the past few years, he has also learnt to accept himself. This has helped him become a better performer, he says.

“I have always considered myself a public servant and my job requires me to be exactly what the people want; that makes me happy.

It is my true happiness and there is no shame in that,” says Lewis.

Along with some of the classics, the singers will also bring new material, and something for all ages, Lewis promises.

“Our vocals are on point and our dancing steps are always first class and what stands out is the camaraderie in the group; it is very infectious. There isn’t one individual trying to stand out. We are a group. There is a lot of love on that stage. We pass it on and I believe the audience can feel it too.

“Also it is important to understand that our faith is our basis and this is a blessed opportunity, this was afforded to us as a gift from the Lord and we will deliver what the audience needs. A moment of happiness or a moment of thought.

“We believe in boogying and we will boogy on that stage, but those moments of inspiration is through divine intervention.”

Bringing theatre to community The Bridgetown Theatre Company will produce three 20-minute plays across Cape Town from next month.

The heartfelt, topical plays are collectively called Teach one, teach all and will be performed for free at several venues from Monday 2 October to Thursday 14 December.

High on life is a musical dance drama about gangsterism and drugs. A mother’s love is a drama that tackles sexual abuse, suicide, and racial and religious tolerance at schools. U bully is a physical theatre drama about bullying at schools.

“The objective of Teach one, teach all is to bring our socially relevant message across to the audience in an entertaining, informative and knowledge-driven manner. In so doing the audiences can understand, enjoy and appreciate it. It’s also about bringing good, professionally staged

theatre to the people,” says writer and producer Theo E Davids.

The productions will be performed on Wednesday 4 October at the Imizamo Yethu centre in Hout Bay at 11:00, at the Hangberg centre at 13:00 and at the Bridgetown community centre at 15:30.

The plays will be performed at the Factreton community centre in Maitland on Friday 6 October at 13:30.

They will also perform at high schools in Mitchell’s Plain, Athlone and Wynberg from 6 to 30 November.

The productions will be performed at City of Cape Town community centres as part of the council’s school holiday programme from 4 to 14 December.

I

n the first encounter with this young talent, it is apparent that he is proud of his roots.

At a show in Town Centre last year, following his introduction, his opening line was “Ek is Klein Fortuin en ek is van die Plein”, after which the crowd went wild.

Steven Fortuin (24), the man behind the persona, is best known for his comedic style of Afrikaans rap and energetic live performances. He has been working in the industry for a number of years now, but solidified his Afrikaans rap and hip-hop calling after performing live on radio on the well-known Good Hope FM Ready D Show Live Cypher sessions.

Klein Fortuin draws inspiration from his everyday experiences and effortlessly shares his life in Mitchell’s Plain with audiences far and wide.

“I am a very humble and laid-back person but also very passionate about life and my music,” says Fortuin.

“Some might say I am very comedic but my sense of humour allows me to look positively at a bad situation and also put a smile on the next person’s face who might need it.”

He got his name from a dislike for his identity, but soon enough all that changed.

“I spent a lot of time in Portlands with my more privileged cousins. I was not very proud of my surname, so I called myself Li’l Fortune. After attending the Ready D cypher session in 2009 for the first time, I fell in love with Afrikaans rap and changed my name to Klein Fortuin, which is Li’l Fortune in Afrikaans,” he says.

He recalls the day he realised he was destined to do this.

While at school, he participated in a group activity in which they were tasked with choosing an international song and adding their own lyrics to spice it up.

“When I left my English teacher in tears after my oral presentation, my passion for music grew. The topic for our oral at the time was ‘The effect music has on me’.

“I started actively pursuing my career in 2011 when I found out about park jams. I started performing regularly at these jams from open field events to indoor open mic events,” he says.

He has released a mix tape called Klein begin and a music video called “Kallit mentality”.

Since joining Katalis Productions, he has released a further two singles and featured with Linkris, Amy Brown and Jedi Knight on a collaborative track.

“I love how music allows me to take a few simple words and create something that can entertain and educate people at the same time. The most rewarding feeling about music and performing is seeing the effect my performance has on people. Not only people of a certain age group but people of different ages are enjoying my music,” he says.

A standout moment for him was performing at a club where a foreigner appreciated his music despite the language barrier.

“He said: ‘Yo, I could not understand a single word you said but I felt your performances.’ That is what keeps me coming back to the stage, just that feeling of seeing how my music affects people,” he says.

His lyrics are what make him stand out.

“I pride myself on originality, so I write my own lyrics. These lyrics are sparked by the truth and the day-to-day things that I experience,” he says.

“Sometimes an instrumental takes my mind to places and experiences I never speak about, then I write it all down. I also draw a lot of inspiration from local artists who have done well and made a name for themselves within Cape Town. I see them as healthy competition, which is why I keep on raising the bar lyrically.”

He has worked hard honing his skills and says being signed to Katalis has been a highlight of his career.

“Working with Katalis has not only made me grow as an artist but it also gave me this new outlook on life. It feels like I am on honeymoon the way they have ‘groomed’ me.

Also four of my unreleased tracks have been chosen for a prime-time TV show on Kyknet,” he says.

His unapologetic acceptance of his personality has lent itself to his success, he says.

“My comedic style of rap and energetic performances set me apart from a lot of artists, but what makes me unique is my ability to write and entertain on different types of instruments,” he says. “This ability has landed me gigs like clubs, gospel, birthday parties, staff parties, festivals and more.

What makes my performances stand out is that it is very infectious, it’s like I hypnotise the crowd and they interact with me from the first to the last track.”

He will be performing at the Katalis Productions monthly event, Northern Lights Hip-hop Nights, every last Friday of the month at the Stikland driving range.

His advice to budding musicians is to keep trying.

“My advice to up-and-coming musicians who are trying to get into the industry would be to always put in 100% in whatever you do. Always stay humble and tell your truth through your music. Move in positive circles, don’t back-stab your way to the top, it never ends well. Take your talent as far as you can and always have a plan B,” he says.

Locals to get TV decoders From this month, qualifying South Africans can register at their local post office for a subsidised digital TV decoder.

Households will now need a decoder (a set-top box) to watch television in areas where transmission has switched over to digital television signals. Local contractors will be enlisted to install the

decoder and antenna.

Households who get a joint income of R3200 or less a month can register for a subsidised set-top box. To qualify, the applicant must be a South African citizen and the household must have a working TV. Households that already have a satellite subscription service will

not need a decoder.

Applicants need a copy of their ID, proof of residence, proof of income and an affidavit to confirm that they have a TV when they apply.

Qualifying residents should apply as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.

“I

ask the Almighty every day to forgive me and to give me a second chance in life.

I did not kill my husband intentionally. It just happened. It was an accident.”

These are the words of a victim of domestic abuse from Grassy Park. The 33-year-old mother, who wishes to share her story, says there is light at the end of the tunnel for abuse victims.

In 2006, at the age of 25, Sarah America married the love of her life with friends and family celebrating the occasion. But things started heading south thereafter.

“It was all good in the beginning, but then my husband started using drugs. This caused him to start lifting his hands, developing disturbing behaviour towards me.”

Ignoring the first signs of abuse and being dependent on him, she accepted this life.

“It started off with soft pushes and verbal abuse. As time went by, he started pushing me to the ground, using my face as a punching bag. He even went as low as pissing on my face. I would go to the police station to lay charges and complain about his abuse, but the files always seemed to go missing.

My husband would tell me I was wasting my time as he would have police remove documents again,” she says.

“The morning of his death, he was in a complete zombie-like mood. I knew that something was wrong as he had never behaved this way before. He started arguing about money and demanded my last R54. I refused to give it as he would use our baby’s money to support his addiction.”

Walking out of her bedroom realising what was about to happen next, she sought help from relatives in the front house.

“I left my baby on the floor and went to inform my mother about his abuse. I had had enough and wanted him out of the house. My mom said: ‘No,’ I must go back home. On my way back I could see him standing behind the door waiting for me to enter,” she says.

“Knowing the norm and being completely scared, I could sense him waiting to hit me from the back. But I avoided this and headed back to my mom’s place. He noticed and started chasing me. When I looked again he had a knife in his hand and started punching me in the face. Trying to grab whatever was around me in defence, my hands got hold of a knife which was in a bowl beside me.”

America says with no intention to stab her husband, she used the knife as a shield to scare him off and to keep his hands away.

“He stopped hitting me and looked at me for a while. I asked him why he was still looking at me and that he had to leave. He then pulled his T-shirt collar from his neck and noticed that I had accidentally stabbed him.

I tried to help him but he wouldn’t let me.”

Rushing her husband to hospital, America says she constantly asked the doctors and God to save his life.

“But it was too late, they couldn’t save him. The police who came on the day knew my situation as I had always complained to them about his abuse. They took down questions and prayed for me in a room at the station. They were very supportive.’’

America was charged with her husband’s death. She was released on R300 bail and ordered to do five years of community work.

“It has been a hard journey. I completed my community service and am currently looking for a job to build myself back up. But it is going to be a mission as people don’t want to see criminal records amongst their applications. I am not a murderer, I was an

“Thankfully, for the first time I am able to get the necessary help. I am currently undergoing counselling at the Ukwakha Ithemba Centre to help me deal with the trauma of both my childhood and marriage abuse.”

She is doing a nursing course through the centre located in Grassy Park and is set to graduate this week.

The centre aims to rehabilitate and reintegrate abused women and offenders after serving their sentence.

“I have always wanted to do nursing or as-

sist in an old-age home. I am grateful for the opportunities I am able to get through this organisation and aim to uplift and educate myself for the sake of my children and me.

“To the women out there, believe me, there is always hope. Don’t wait until it is too late.

You should go and report abuse from day one. I know you love your partners, but just pack your bags and leave.

“If you don’t, they will start abusing you in different ways, including physically, emotionally, financially and sexually. Complaining never helped me and family chased me away whenever I was abused by him.”

Museum a seed for contemporary art NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain What was once a humble corn kernel has been transformed into the “heart” of the world’s largest museum dedicated to contemporary African art. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz Mocaa) is officially opening on Friday.

Conceptualised by the V&A Waterfront in consultation with Heatherwick Studio, the museum is housed in a building that had humble beginnings as part of an industrial shipping facility in the Cape Town harbour.

The almost 100-year-old grain silo today has an entirely new purpose: Custodian of some of the most important contemporary artwork on the continent.

At 57m tall, the grain silo building has been a part of Cape Town’s skyline for almost ninety years, and, until the turn of the millennium, has been at the heart of the operational life of the city’s waterfront dock, facilitating the collection, sorting and storing and the exportation of much of the country’s grain.

Completed in 1924 by SA Railways and Harbours, it has processed hundreds of thousands of tons of wheat, maize, soya and sorghum. Its location was driven by its connectivity to the docks and the resultant rail infrastructure.

The R500m project to re-imagine the building has been four years in the making.

At the centre of the museum is a cathedrallike atrium space which has been literally carved from the silo’s dense cellular structure of 42 tubes that pack the building.

Thomas Heatherwick, founder of Heatherwick Studio, says: “When we first visited the building, it was silent, but you could feel the choreography that must have existed. It had only stopped being used about 15 years earlier. There were these tall rubber belts with wooden blocks on them and the workers would grab onto these belts, feet onto these blocks and sort of be catapulted up this building. And there were a series of fireman’s poles in order to very quickly get back down the building and you could have imagined the dynamism of everyone moving through this structure.”

The cut-out in the atrium was modelled off a corn kernel.

Instead of cutting into the tubes horizontally or vertically, Heatherwick chose a more unusual shape to show off the silo’s interior – the digitally mapped shape of one of the kernels that once filled the building.

This “heart” is now home to a dragon created by Nicholas Hlobo, titled “Iimpundulu zonke ziyandilenda”.

The rest of the 6000m² of exhibition space, in 100 galleries, houses work by local and international artists, such as Zimbabwe’s Kudzanai Chuirai, Angola’s Edson Chagas and Nandipha Mntambo from Swaziland.

The museum has a “soul built on a seed”, says Azy Nwagbogu, curator-at-large of photography.

“We all know what happens when you plant a seed. It generates many, many more.

We’re hoping that this museum is a seed for contemporary art on the continent and across the region.”

The museum includes a rooftop sculpture garden, state-of-the-art storage and conservation areas, a bookshop, a restaurant and bar, and various reading rooms.

It also boasts classrooms for school groups, explains executive director and chief curator of the museum, Mark Coetzee.

While two of the nine floors will be dedicated to permanent exhibitions, another two will be devoted to travelling or temporary exhibitions held in partnership with institutions across the world, he says. The museum’s founding art collection, the Zeitz collection, is on long-term loan, and forms the basis of the extensive art on display.

The museum has established different centres and institutes within the overall museum: Centres for a costume institute, photography, curatorial excellence, the moving image, performative practice and art education.

Visitors under the age of 18 get free entrance to the museum all year around, South Africans and other Africans can enter free every Wednesday morning and everyone pays half price on “Late Night Fridays”.

V Entrance to the museum will be free from Friday 22 to Monday 25 September. To avoid overcrowding, visitors need to present a ticket for entry. Tickets are available – for free – from Webtickets and at the door.

The Zeitz Mocaa will be open from 10:00 to 18:00.

Active celebration for club’s 80th NOMZAMO YUKU @Nomzamo Yuku The Pinelands Athletic Club marked its 80th anniversary with a celebration at the clubhouse late last month.

According to the members the celebration was held in the form of a cocktail party.

It was followed by different activities, including an 80 by 1km relay in which each of the 80 participants ran a kilometre around the top and lower ovals in Pinelands. This was followed by a braai for all of the club’s 366 members. Then, 48 members participated in a 10km road race in Khayelitsha.

The president of the club, Kaare James, says the club’s members felt the need to celebrate and be more active to celebrate the long life and growth of the club.

The club has members from various areas in the southern

suburbs, including Pinelands, Thornton, Kensington and Mitchell’s Plain and even some parts of the northern suburbs.

Wendal Smith, chairperson of the club, says he is happy to be part of a successful club that is determined to play a positive role in the lives of many. He says it is important for them to celebrate the milestone and make sure the legacy remains.

He says everyone deserves a healthy lifestyle that can be easily achieved by simple running or exercising.

Smith adds that over the years he has noticed that the club members share the common value of caring for communities, mentioning one programme they ran called the “Couch to 10km” that was initiated by one of the club members, Dion Stevens.

He says the club’s members also gave 50 pairs of shoes to a deserving cause.

Pinelands Athletic Club hosted different events to celebrate its 80th anniversary, including a relay and participation in a road race in Khayelitsha.

Pick up on signs of teen suicide

I

n observing World Suicide Prevention Day, marked annually on 10 September, Western Cape health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo cautioned Capetonians to be more attuned and sensitive to the mental wellbeing of young people due to the strong link between poor mental health and suicide.

According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is the second most common cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds, with about 800 000 young people dying as a result of suicide per year.

“The increased levels of trauma, abuse and violence have seen many young people seek security in gangsterism, alcohol and illegal substances. They become reclusive, displaying aggressive and reckless behaviour, showing an increase in suicidal and self-harm tendencies,” says Mbombo.

The Western Cape Mental Health Review Board, which considers and reviews all admissions of mental healthcare patients under the Mental Health Care Act, has noted a significant increase in mental health admissions of minors, showing suicidal behaviour, since 2015.

“In the past year, 30% of the minors who were admitted under the Mental Health Care Act were recorded as a serious risk to themselves, either due to self-harm behaviours, suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts and intentions. The other significant precipitant for adolescent presentations of mental health symptoms is substance abuse and use. This frequently leads to self-harm and other impulsive, high-risk behaviours,” says Dr Rene Nassen, head of the child and adolescent mental health service at Lentegeur Hospital.

Nassen explains that psychiatric and psychological factors such as the presence of mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, and the use of drugs and alcohol may precipitate suicidal behaviour among teenagers. Other factors, such as bad life events and distress caused by family, physical or sexual abuse, as well as bullying, also may lead to suicidal behaviour.

“More recently, cyber bullying has also been noted as a contributing factor to similar behaviour,” says Nassen.

She explains that teenagers’ suicidal tendencies are also rising among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teenagers.

Echoing these sentiments, the hospital’s Sonja Pasche explains that self-harm, for instance scratching, burning or cutting, is more common in teenage girls, while com-

pleted suicide is more common in teenage boys.

“Overall, women who complete suicide tend to use methods such as self-poisoning, compared to men, who more often use violent methods such as hanging or use of a firearm,” she explains.

Pasche warns that youth who are contemplating suicide frequently give warning signs of their distress.

“Parents, teachers and friends are in a key position to pick up on these signs and get help. If you notice that your loved one is expressing suicidal ideas, threatens suicide or self-harms, seek assistance immediately. A telling sign when young people are suicidal is that they often become withdrawn or isolate themselves from family or friends, and exhibit a depressed mood, agitation or anxiety,” says Pasche.

Nassen stresses that when noticing these trends, family or friends are encouraged to find medical help at a general practitioner (GP), local clinic or district hospital.

“Ensure that there is supervision and an adult to accompany the young person – never leave the young person alone. Every suicide gesture, attempt or ideation should be taken seriously as it may be lethal, even if the intention was not to die.

“Young people with suicidal behaviour can undergo a psychiatric assessment at a community clinic or district hospital, where mental health services are available.

Young people who present with mental illnesses and suicidal behaviours may be referred via their local district hospital or community clinic for further assessment and therapeutic intervention to the child and adolescent mental health services in the city. Hospitalisation in some situations may be needed.

Mbombo says that communities play a critical role in suicide prevention.

“Communities can provide social support to vulnerable individuals and engage in follow-up care, fight stigma and support those bereaved by suicide. Stigma attached to mental disorders and suicide means that many people may feel unable to seek help.

Let us change this and encourage public dialogue, as suicide can affect us all,” says Mbombo.

Entry opens for Cancer Relay for Life The Cancer Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain committee has opened the registration for next year’s relay.

All cancer survivors, family members, residents, companies and extended communities in Mitchell’s Plain and surrounding areas are urged to get involved in the fight against cancer.

The walk will be held at the Stephen Reagan sports field from Friday 2 to Saturday 3 March.

Team captain and survivors’ meetings are held once a month.

Yongama Xolilizwe, a 26-year-old resident of Khayelitsha, is one PERihot griller!

Every year, Nando’s hosts an international grilling competition in search of their hottest griller in order to pay tribute to the passion and pride seen behind the flames.

Xolilizwe will be participating in the International Nando’s Grillers’ Challenge in Lorentzville, Johannesburg, from 16 to 20 October.

He is one of the four South African National Griller Challenge winners competing in the international competition against grillers from 16 other countries from around the world.

Xolilizwe discovered he had a passion for cooking and grilling when he was 14.

He says he was continuously at the forefront when the word “braai” came up in their household and this was a major influence in his decision to start working at Nando’s as a griller.

the beginning I was skeptical because I didn’t see the point of people competing while they are all doing the same thing – grilling. I am still overwhelmed by my current achievements. I did not think that I would be the only one in the province to go through to the next round and this motivated me to do even better.”

Xolilizwe’s achievement spurred him on and kept him motivated to apply his mastery behind the grill, resulting in scrumptious and zesty chicken meals for the judges’ enjoyment.

Now he stands proud as only one of four grillers to represent the country’s grilling talents internationally.

I try to follow each step of the cooking process utterly, as I do not want to skip anything. Above all, you must always show love for what you do; this will make the job much easier.”

According to this flame master, the Nando’s values always remain a crucial part of the grilling process with a focus on family, pride, integrity, courage and passion.

Xolilizwe says his secret lies in following the rules of grilling to a T. “It is important to do what you have been taught, while also putting in just that little extra effort.

From the moment Xolilizwe starting working at Nando’s in 2011, his manager, Karl Basson, says he clearly had potential and he convinced Xolilizwe to enter the competition.

Upsets during chase to finish line T

he Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which took place on Sunday, saw a mass field of just under 8000 entrants taking to the course.

Last year’s winner, Asefa Mengstu Negewu, defended his title.

Running in the lead pack, Negewu went through 10km in 30:18, some 13 seconds behind pace maker Henry Kiplagat. Kiplagat proceeded to pour on the pace and by halfway had extended his lead to 34 seconds.

Kiplagat went through to the half marathon mark in 1:04.29 with the pack clocking 1:05.03. At 35km, Negewu threw down the gauntlet and pulled away from his rivals to cross the line in 2:10.01

The women’s race saw some drama as pace maker Helalia Johannes went out at a blistering pace, dropping the main protagonists by the halfway mark, reached in 1:15.22.

By 35km it was clear that, pacemaking duties fulfilled, Helalia Johannes was going for the win and when she saw the finish line two kilometres out, she must have thought that the win was hers.

But literally within less than a kilometre to go, she was caught by Betelhem Moges who went on to win in 2:30.22, Johannes coming through six seconds adrift (2:30.28).

Thrilling soccer set for semis JOSEPH PILLAY

There’s a tense rivalry between the four semi-finalists in the Safa Cape Town Coca-Cola Cup showdown.

It will potentially be a fascinating contest between the “The Seagulls” of Strandfontein FC and Hanover Park’s “Brasse vanni Park”.

Rygersdal FC’s match against the Silver Spurs has all the attraction of good technique and attractive play. There should also be exciting counter-attack soccer on offer. Fans will see some unforgettable soccer when the Coca-Cola Cup competition takes centre stage at Avonwood Park in Elsies River on Monday.Three of the four semifinalists, namely Rygersdal (2006), Hanover Park (2009 and 2012) and Silver Spurs (2014) have previously won the coveted Coke Cup. Head coaches Franklin Davies (Hanover Park), Morne de Lange (Strandfontein), Brent Raven (Rygersdal) and Victor Tajoodien (Silver Spurs) all proclaim a unique coaching method that has previously brought them success.

Strandfontein supporters believe the Seagulls are playing awesome soccer that will put Brasse vanni Park under pressure. Chad “Flash” Jones, Dale April, Keanan Ford and Seon Gladden of Brasse vanni Park will have to play harder or face endless problems.

However, Hanover Park has a few seasoned campaigners on their side, including midfielder

Alfonso Topley and goalkeeper Marlon Johnson.

Together with their forwards, Clinton “Firgo” Emmanuel, Layro Mamba and Shahied Maloy, prowling the goal area, they could be a threat to Clint Klaassen between the sticks.

Rygersdal’s Jaaber Delport, Yusuf Abrahams, Shamiel Philander, Vaughn Jacobs and Ferial Abrahams can on any given day produce fireworks on the field. The Silver Spurs will have to cover their defence lines with Rashaad du Plooy, Cheslyn Visagie, Cheslyn Tajoodien and Keanan Fisher presently there.

Much will also depend on Nizaam Miller, Wesley Jacobus and Elrico Cornellissen, as these key players will carry the hopes of the Silvertown community.

There will also be women’s clashes between RV United and defending champions UWC and former cup holders Cape Town Roses, who are pitted against Burnley United.

RV United have reached the finals for the last three years, winning once in 2015 when they defeated Spurs Ladies 2-0. UWC engraved their name on the trophy first in 2013 and won it again last year.

Unbeaten high schools knocked down JOSEPH PILLAY Cloetesville and Tafelsig high schools took nose dives in Saturday’s key matches in the Mr Price Foundation high schools league at the Rocklands sports complex against Beacon Hill and Aloe high schools respectively.

Cloetesville High were brought down by the highly energised and equally motivated Beacon Hill High in a 2-1 victory.

Tafelsig High suffered their first defeat, going down 3-0 to Aloe High, who were just as confident in denting the good fortune and run of the opposition.

It was anticipated that under coach Wilbur Beukes, Beacon Hill High stood a good chance of beating the up-beat Cloetesville, ending their unblemished record.

Cloetesville’s Jowayne Manuel showed what a brilliant player in the making he is when he sneaked in the equalising goal two minutes before the break, beating off Beacon Hills custodian Thaaffir Petersen.

After a good run down the centre, Siraaj Williams and Byron Swarts brought Buren Matthews into play. Abdul Sait provided the finish that led to the opening goal for Beacon Hill.

That goal signalled the end of Curthwin Koopman’s clean sheet of nine games without conceding a goal.

In the second half, Beacon Hill put pressure on their opponents with good attack raids. One inci-

dent led to Collegeville’s number five defender, Jaquin Baartman, receiving a red card for a professional foul for obstructing an opponent in a goal-scoring opportunity.

The subsequent free kick from just a metre outside the 18m area produced a goal. Swarts curled his parting shot around the packed wall past the outstretched Koopman into the far corner. It turned out to be the decisive goal (2-1), sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Despite the 2-1 loss, Cloetesville High still top the league table with 31 points after 12 matches. Beacon Hill are in second place with 28 points and Tafelsig are now third with 27 points.

Aloe High were full of confidence in their 3-0 win against Tafelsig High Securo Jooste, Curtly van Beling and Sisonke Wodada shared in the goals.

Meanwhile, Beacon Hill High will be preparing themselves for their next challenge against Westridge High.

A second-half strike by Jamie Brown brought much relief to the Westridge boys, who struggled to come to grips with their play but still managed to beat Oval North High 1-0.

f you are looking for a weekend of family fun and great entertainment on your doorstep, look no further than the annual cubs tournament taking place this weekend.

Hosted by the Mitchell’s Plain Local Football Association (MPLFA), with assistance from Westridge, Strandfontein, Bayview and Milano clubs, the two-day tournament will feature nine teams in the u.6 age group, 32 teams in the u.8 age group and 32 in the u.10 age group.

The clubs from all over Mitchell’s Plain are associated with the MPLFA. Some of the clubs have multiple teams participating. “This is our third event and it is growing every year. We hope to make it one of

the biggest tournaments of its kind in the Western Cape,” says Wayne Carstens, MPLFA president.

Some of the sponsors include 7Stars, Vodacom, Battery Centre, Remax, the social development department, City of Cape Town and the Strandfontein MFMC. People’s Post is the official media partner of the event.

The tournament will take place at the Strandfontein sports field on Saturday and Sunday. Entry costs R5 per car, R5 for children and R10 for adults on both days.

The event will also offer a day of fun for families with games and activities to keep everyone entertained.

UCT fight hard for win ANDRE CRUYWAGEN Milano Ladies United caused a big upset by beating Ikamva FC 2-0 in a Sasol Safa Cape Town regional women’s league second round match at the Grassy Park sports complex on Saturday.

Milano fared better this time around and took the upper hand on home soil. The visitors lacked determination after their strikers wasted several opportunities.

Chelsea Petersen, the hosts’ lethal front striker, scored after 27 minutes when they hammered a powerful volley into the net.

The visitors’ resistance was too weak for Milano. Meshay Paulse, the agile Milano midfielder, strengthened her team’s chances in the second half with a superb goal.

Spurs Ladies defeated Dangerous Heroes 3-1 in their second round match at the Philippi sports field on Friday night. Spurs played with a winning combination which frustrated the inconsistent hosts.

Abigail Petersen, the front striker for Spurs, gave them an early lead with her quick movements. The hosts failed to attack and it allowed the visitors to run amok. Celeste Jansen’s dedication paid off when she boosted her team’s performance with a brilliant goal minutes before half-time. At the start of the second half, Dangerous Heroes bounced back and Sisipho Mlomo scored for

them. Spur soon changed their game strategy and Rhezanne Marinius sealed the victory for Spurs, who are third on the log.

Santos Ladies demolished Maties 4-1 in their second round match at Lentelus sports ground on Saturday. Santos put down their stamp of authority early on in the game when the students couldn’t settle in. Santos were in command of the game and took dominance after Chantay Norris gave them an early advantage. The visitors played with admiration while Maties struggled to get their act together. Thanks to her agile footwork and outstanding composure, Miche Minnies scored in the 46th minute.

With her brace of goals, Lucinda Croy steered the game away from the hosts, while Janice Smith scored for Maties.

RV United beat the lacklustre Manenberg Ladies 13-0 in their encounter at Lingelethu Stadium on Saturday. Manenberg were easy opponents for the visiting team as they crumbled under a skilful attack.
