hey have spent more than two decades working toward making a positive impact in the lives of the youth at risk.

Situated in the heart of Tafelsig, local nonprofit organisation Joining Hands has somehow managed to stay afloat with little to no assistance.

Although the organisation was only registered in 2010, founders Charles and Denise De Long and Jamiela Haliem have been working with children and youth in the area

for the past 25 years.

The NPO, Joining Hands operates from a plot in Voelvlei Street and services the ‘most vulnerable’ residents, including young children, the youth and the elderly.

Some of their projects include a soup kitchen, outreach projects to the elderly and an ECD centre which prepares the children for Grade R. “We started with a soup kitchen on this site with one container and we worked with the youth. That started 25 years ago,” says Charles. “Our youth get lost and go in the wrong direction on a bad path. I am not per-

fect, but I try to make a difference and put a stop to [anti-social behaviour] in our community. Thus far, I have made a success working with our youth,” he says.

He has dedicated his life to the betterment of the youth.

“I don’t work any other job. I dedicate all my time to this. If I don’t do it, what is there for the children? The children are our future and we do this all for them,” he says.

Around five years ago, the organisation opened an ECD centre that services 80 children­.

They have also opened their doors as a safe-house for wayward youth and orphaned children. Joining Hands has partnered with several organisations in the area but are still in need of assistance in upgrading their facilities and continuing in making a difference in the children’s lives.

“The roof is leaking and we need help to fix it. Also our bakkie burnt out and we are not able to collect food for the feeding scheme anymore,” he says.

The City of Cape Town has begun roadworks along Kilimanjaro Street in Tafelsig. After years of complaints and requests from motorists and residents for the road to be repaired, work started on Monday 26 February. “There have been many complaints, but we are glad to see the road is being repaired. The repair work is being funded by the City’s transport department,” says ward councillor Sheval Arendse. The repairs include the resurfacing of the road.

everal areas were left without water last week as a result of a leak in the bulk water main in Philippi.

Residents of Pelican Park, Retreat, Ottery, Wynberg, Plumstead, Southfield, Philippi, Gugulethu and Nyanga were all affected by the interruptions as the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department worked to repair the water main.

The repairs required the shutting off of the 1.2m diameter water main, which feeds the reticulation network for the extended area.

The water supply was rerouted via the Wynberg bulk water mains as far as possible, restoring supply to some areas but leaving others still without water.

Residents confirm that the water supply was shut off for the entire day on Tuesday as repairs were being done, while some parts of the area, including Peacock Close, had low water pressure on Monday.

“Our repair teams worked throughout the night, and early in the morning managed to remove the leaking valve for maintenance.

“A new valve [was inserted on Wednesday and the bulk water main recharged] . This is a slow process due to the immense water pressure in the pipeline,” said Farouk Robertson, spokesperson for the department.

“Once filled, the valves to the remainder of the reticulation network [were opened and the water supply to the affected areas normalised­]­.”

Residents confirm the water has since been restored.

The City has confirmed that the leak was at a valve that is used to drain the pipeline for maintenance purposes. The connecting bolts at the joint with the main pipeline were

badly corroded and could not withstand the water pressure.

“The City apologises for the inconvenience and thanks our residents for their patience during this period. It is imperative that we ensure our water infrastructure is maintained to supply good quality drinking water to citizens at all times,” says Robertson.

The City says the same issue may not be the cause of water interruptions in other areas­.

The City is currently implementing pressure management across its reticulation network as part of their water-saving measures.

“By lowering the water pressure in the mains, the water loss due to leaks and pipe bursts is reduced, as is the flow rate to residential properties. This has greatly aided our water-saving efforts. However, higher lying areas may occasionally experience intermittent outages especially during peak periods,” says Roberston.

While the City’s Water and Sanitation Department is doing all it can to ensure uninterrupted supply, some areas may experience reduced supply, he adds.

“Some outages occur when properties with water management devices installed reach their daily allocation limit – usually 350F per day.

“This is not a service delivery fault, but serves to restrict high water usage. The device resets the next day when an additional allocation of 350F is made available. Larger households need to apply for an increase in the daily allocation quota,” he says.

In the event of sustained outages, residents are asked to log a service request with the City’s call centre.

N2 Express joint venture extended T

he City of Cape Town extended its current contract with the N2 Express Joint Venture Vehicle Operating Company on Wednesday, with the new agreement taking effect on Thursday.

The move signifies a milestone achievement where taxi associations will begin to take charge of the current operations of the four MyCiTi routes in Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha.

The N2 Express Joint Venture (JV) Vehicle Operating Company was formed by Codeta in Khayelitsha, the Route 6 Taxi Association in Mitchell’s Plain, and the Golden Arrow Bus Service (Gabs) prior to the roll-out of the four MyCiTi routes to the Metro South-east in July 2014.

“We have amended the current operating contract which was extended yesterday afternoon. These changes signify an important milestone where the taxi associations that are part of the JV will begin to take over the operations of the N2 Express service from Gabs in an incremental manner. The new agreement is effective as of 1 March. This means that Codeta and the Route 6 Taxi Association will take over the operations of the four N2 Express routes, as well as the management of the MyCiTi fleet serving commuters from Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha,” says Mayco member for transport and

“To date Gabs has fulfilled this function and responsibilities, but the time has come for these two partners who form part of the JV to take over this role. They will be doing so in the coming months as the responsibilities are handed over incrementally,” says Herron.

“While this process is being implemented, the City will commence with negotiations for the signing of long-term operating contracts for the N2 Express service.”

Herron adds that when the N2 Express service was rolled out in 2014, the City started with the mammoth task of bringing decent and affordable public transport to residents living on the periphery of the City.

“The extension of the MyCiTi service to the

Metro South-east, however, also brought new opportunities to the taxi associations in Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha who were affected by the MyCiTi route roll-out at the time,” says Herron.

One of the City’s core objectives is to build an inclusive city where the legacy of the past is undone by linking people with opportunities and by creating an environment conducive to job creation and economic growth, he says.

“Over the past three years the City has empowered the board members of the affected minibus taxi associations to set up and run their own vehicle operating company in a joint venture with Gabs. We have now reached the point where Route 6 and Codeta are eager and willing to take over

the vehicle operations from Gabs. We have also assisted former minibus taxi drivers to receive training to operate and drive the buses that are currently servicing the N2 Express routes. The Gabs Learning and Assessment Centre in Montana facilitated the training of the minibus taxi drivers to upgrade their licences from Code 8 to Code 11.

“We have covered their training costs, as well as the costs of other personnel who did courses in administrative duties. I wish Codeta and Route 6 all of the best with the new challenge. I am eager to see how they perform,” says Herron.

“Our aim is to ensure that we bring taxi associations up to the same level as other major scheduled transport operators. I want to thank Gabs for their assistance, especially for facilitating the training. That is what partnership is all about.”

Mayor Patricia de Lille would, however, like to see the City beef up empowerment in the taxi industry­.

“From the City’s side, we are always willing to facilitate such programmes. Through this process of engagement we have learned that by working together and constantly communicating, we can solve any problem.

I want to thank all those involved for working to ensure that we get to where we are today,” she says.

CRIME WRAP VEastridge: Police arrested a 32-year-old man on Saturday 24 February at 10:00 when officers were doing a routine crime prevention patrol in Zebra Crescent. The officers noticed a suspicious-looking man who was standing in the street and approached him. They found a Norinco 9mm pistol and a CZ 9mm pistol with 18 live rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Street opens up to skate, explore and play Due to popular demand, a major roadway in Mitchell’s Plain is set to go car-free for the third time.

This shows an appetite for a regular programme of Open Streets days in the area, according to Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) managing director Marcela Guerrero Casas.

On Sunday 25 March, a longer stretch of Eisleben Road, between Spine Road and Highlands Drive, will become a space for people to walk, cycle, skate, explore, play, connect and learn.

This follows Open Streets Main Road in Observatory on Sunday 25 February.

The focus will continue to be on building solidarity to tackle the water crisis and will also incorporate an element of play and education for kids. The most powerful way to influence the future is by engaging children at a young age; likewise, growing the Open Streets movement will rely largely on having the new generation lead the way.

Guerrero Casas says: “Our intention was never for Open Streets to be an event, but rather a movement of citizens reimagining their streets together. And that’s why we never refer to it as an event, or even a festival! We took inspiration from Ciclovía, a Colombian programme of weekly car-free days that makes the streets of major cities accessible to pedestrians and non-motorised transport users every Sunday and public holiday.

It’s exciting to see that the concept is catching on in Cape Town.”

Thousands of families come to each Open Streets day, many of them return participants. “We believe there is significant public interest in growing the programme in different parts of the city. Soon we hope Open Streets will become a way of life like it is in Latin America.”

Open Streets Main Road was the clearest indication of this so far. As thousands of pedestrians and non-motorised transport users descended on the space, it began to resemble Ciclovía.

ircumstances surrounding the death of three people who were shot and killed on Thursday last week are still under investigation­.

At 09:00 shots were fired at a home in Begonia Street leaving a 27-year-old and 54year-old woman dead.

It is believed that a 41-year-old police officer stationed at Lentegeur Police Station had an argument with his 27-year-old girlfriend on Wednesday.

He then allegedly held the woman and her parents hostage at the Begonia Street home.

Shots were heard at 09:00 and police and ambulances were called.

It is alleged that the officer shot and killed the woman and her mother before turning the gun on himself.

Claims of a history of domestic violence are also under investigation as part of the inquest into the deaths.

Police were stationed outside the home for hours.

The circumstances surrounding the incident is still unclear and local police and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate are investigating.

n honour of Mandela Day, a local organisation is calling on residents to submit their special memories with the late president.

In celebration of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday later this year, the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) is putting together a Mandela and Children book.

“We are looking to find people who have photographs (or stories) of themselves as a child with Mandela or would like to submit a Mandela-themed drawing.

“We are collecting photographs and short stories from people who met President Mandela when they were young and we are interested in hearing from people about their experience of meeting Mandela as a child and the impact this experience had on their lives,” says programme manager, Bridget Kahts.

“After a successful Mandela Day event that we hosted [last year], we were trying to decide how to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday this year, and to celebrate his legacy in a lasting manner.

“We came up with this initiative and have been working towards it since then.”

The organisation would preferably like to receive photos and stories.

However, if you have a story about meeting Mandela as a child but without a photo, they will gladly accept this too.

“Another aspect of the book that we are collecting from the public is Mandela drawings.

We have approached a number of primary

and high schools to participate so far and we would still like some more schools to come on board,” she says.

Mandela loved children Kahts says the initiative is aimed at honouring Madiba and his values.

“Children were a priority for President Mandela. He showed this consistently through his words and actions.

“The Centre for Early Childhood Development, as an early childhood development non-profit, values children in the same way and as such we want to commemorate Madiba’s contribution to the wellbeing of children in this country. “’The book is aimed at all readers – it is not a children’s book, but refers to and includes stories about children 0-18 years of age,” she says.

Submissions are open to all who may have met Mandela when they were between these ages.

The CECD is currently covering all costs for the book from their resources as part of their contribution to South Africa, its history and the children’s sector.

“The cost at this stage is of the order of R50 000 and we would welcome any support for the publishing and printing of the book.”

The book is due to be available by Wednesday 18 July and will be given away at no cost.

“We are aiming to select about 20 stories and photographs for the book, and about 20 to 30 drawings.

“The entries are open country wide. At

this stage the book is solely a CECD initiative­.

“We welcome partners to join us on this initiative,” she says.

Drawings can be about anything to do with Mandela.

“We have kept it open-ended as we are hoping learners will use their imagination in deciding what they would like to draw.

For example, learners could draw: How they imagine Nelson Mandela; a moment they remember about Mandela; something that reflects or represents Mandela; or something that is special about Mandela,” she says.

Learners are asked to put their name and age on their drawings.

“We are appealing to the public to please assist us in spreading the word about this exciting initiative,” she says.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday 15 March.

The CECD is a non-profit organisation founded in 1994, working in the field of early childhood development nationally.

The organisation provides training, resources and support in early childhood development through various programmes (including family outreach programmes and integrated ECD centre programmes).

Prior to each youth night, the organisation hosts two build-up sessions were they talk about various issues. Linnett says that during these build-up sessions, they remind the youth that change is possible but that it won’t come overnight.

“Our aim is to listen and to be there for the youth. There is so much putting the youth at risk these days, especially with the internet available to almost everyone. We talk about issues currently facing the youth like gang violence and rejection. Our aim is to get to the root cause of all the problems and together find ways of healing and being hopeful while we work on the situation,” he says.

“We will continue having youth nights once a month in different areas. The next areas will be Seawinds and Hillview, and thereafter we will be in Mitchell’s Plain,” concludes Linnett.

he last of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2018 Training and Development Music and Career workshops has been completed.

Spotted in the mix were special guest artists Lara Crowster, Darren English and Donveno Prins, who joined in the fun of an impromptu jam session with some of the future musicians from the participating schools – each of whom took turns at the mic, singing and playing their rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Summertime” before bringing it back home to the motherland with a rendition of Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi’s “Yakhal Inkomo”.

The Music and Career workshops introduced students to the various options and opportunities of employment within the

music industry.

These workshops were presented by industry professionals and mentors, providing training within music industry standards for high school learners who are pursuing music as a career choice.

The participating schools for 2018 are Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy, Bergvliet High School, South Peninsula, Parel Vallei High School, Chris Hani High School, Eerste River High School, Kronnendal Music Academy and Khayelitsha IMAD Music School.

The respective schools are currently running weekly practice sessions that are designed to prepare them for a live performance that will take place at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 18 March.

he Cape of Good Hope SPCA in Grassy Park hosted a Day Zero drill on Wednesday last week to highlight the direct impact such a day could have on the organisation.

The day-long event took place at the centre’s premises in First Avenue and served to highlight the issue for both staff and members of the public as to how the centre will cope without an alternative water source should the taps run dry.

Centre spokesperson, Belinda Abrahams, says the day challenged staff to adapt to a new system and prepare for Day Zero in a real life re-enactment to help ensure staff members are well prepared and equipped to handle the crisis.

“Water is life at the SPCA – not only for hydration for animals, but also for cleaning purposes. We need to clean our facilities to a certain standard every day to prevent the spread of dreaded diseases and we need to be able to prepare to maintain that standard through a water crises,” she says.

“In spite of our preparation, it was not easy at all and even the simplest tasks like cleaning took much longer than usual.

While we managed on the day, it is clear that we must act urgently to provide an alternative source of water for animals – both here at the SPCA and in the wider community.”

Various waterless and water-saving methods were put in place during the drill.

“We had toilets sponsored for the use of both the public and staff. We also had wheelie bins brought in to store and transport water around the premises, as we don’t have boreholes or a rainwater system on site. We found it could be an easy solution to use the bins to fill with water donated to us for cleaning and drinking purposes.’’

“We have 700 animals on site daily that need water. This excludes animals out in the communities, like livestock, horses, etc.

People haven’t really anticipated what Day Zero will be like, not just for themselves but for animals too. People think, ‘if my child is thirsty and my animals are too, who am I going to give the water to?’ And this is where we try to make a difference.”

She says the challenges experienced throughout the day ranged from simple dayto-day tasks like washing hands to cleaning kennels and many more, and they plan to host another Day Zero drill in due course, depending on the status of the water crisis.

“Without an independent water source, each and every SPCA staff member’s work will be made difficult. Energy that should be directed completely towards the animals’ needs will now be severely impacted by the

water crisis as staff focus on collecting water instead of spending time with the animals. Aside from the immediate concerns within our organisation, we also have to worry about the huge number of stray animals that will be desperate for water as the drought continues.

“Our inspectors are already finding some very thirsty free-roaming animals in areas where naturally occurring water sources

have dried up. We can only imagine the worst – that these animals will start dying in their thousands within a few days of Day Zero unless we can equip ourselves with an on-site sustainable water solution to cater not only for our animals but also for those throughout our 11 000km2 area of operation.”

Beware what you post online AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem “I feel embarrassed. I don’t know how to look at my colleagues. I feel like my image has been ruined because of one single post that consists of untrue allegations.” These are the words of an emotional 26-year-old resident of Grassy Park, who is involved in a social media scandal after being accused of sleeping with married men in her workplace.

This young lady, who is forced to face her colleagues every day, has not only lost years of friendships but had also been called in for a serious meeting by her employers. The young lady, who does not want to be identified, says that despite the issue being resolved and an apology received from the person responsible for the post, her reputation remains damaged.

But did you know that posting defamatory allegations against someone on a public platform like Facebook could land you in trouble? This is according to legal expert and attorney, Igsaan Higgans. He took the topic to air during a live radio discussion on Monday, saying Western Cape courts are filling up with cases of defamation.

“It is becoming a big issue in our community with regard to fake news. In this digital age we can get into serious legal trouble

with the click of a button. The courts take these remarks very seriously and people end up paying as much as half a million rand after being sued,” he explains.

“When you post something on social media you have to be very careful. Social media sites like Facebook are now being used more as a form of communication that everyone can see.”

Higgins says defamatory remarks can have a massive impact on a person’s life.

“We have had so many issues where people say things about each other on platforms with the intention that everyone should know about it. There are many people who think there are no consequences to their actions on social media, because of minimal contact with the sites users.

“Nobody sends [defamatory] things on social media without a malicious intention.

Your intention is to defame the individual, knowing the number of people it will reach.

This creation of stigma around someone’s personality and character could spread very fast.”

Attorney Faizal Bardien, who also joined Higgins in the discussion, says defamation cases can start at a point where only one person is present.

“When one shares something with an individual or large group, like an insult or defamatory remark, there could be a case of

defamation against you immediately. This is where it initiates. Normally with these matters, once the judge has satisfied him or herself that a case of defamation has been made, he or she will be faced with the concept of what we called a ‘quantifying value of damages claim’,” he explains.

“More often or not, we will find that the claims range from R35 000 to R40 000 and up.

With regard to the matter to which you made reference, the judge may actually decide that the severity of the defamation that was suffered by the plaintiff in that case warrants the judge awarding them the amount of damages claimed, for damage to the person’s dignity and reputation.”

Bardien says posting pictures without an individual’s consent could also land social media users in hot water.

“Without their permission you could be defaming their character. Some people don’t like being posted on social media because in some cases they might be hiding from abusive partners and so forth. People need to remember that there are possible consequences, and the amount in damages that has been awarded in the past for infringing on people’s rights has been quite high. The courts take it seriously and a criminal charge can also be laid against someone for an insult to another person’s reputation,” he adds.

ansdowne resident Geila Wills is a beacon of hope, an infectious character and driven to use her leadership to improve the lives of others.

Wills is the district governor for Lions Club district 410A (Western Cape, Northern Cape and Namibia), where she manages 46 Lions Clubs with over 900 members.

She started as a Kirstenbosch Leo (leadership through experience and opportunity) in service work in 1983. She moved through the ranks becoming the multiple district president for South Africa and Namibia. She was instrumental in the chartering of the Groote Schuur Lions Club, the first club to have both women and men.

Besides being a district governor, Wills is still an “ordinary Lion”, is on the training team, attends projects and does club visitations. She works full-time and does animal rescue work when able.

Lions Clubs International (LCI) motto, “We Serve”, means that ordinary people, committed to serving people in need, get together and form a Lions Club. The first Lions Club has grown to the largest voluntary humanitarian service organisation in the world, with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries and 45 000 clubs.

“The greatest gift you can give to a community is that of a Lions Club,” says Wills.

She adds that LCI’s core projects are: sight, hunger, environment, diabetes and childhood cancer.

“We also have projects to prevent river blindness and are attempting to eradicate measles. We like to say: ‘Where there is a need there is a Lion or Leo’. Lions projects have provided me with incredible moments – the joy on a child’s face, as a pair of spectacles lets them see clearly for the first time; working with children in homes; raising

funds for SA Guide Dogs; cleaning up the environment and planting trees or a senior who goes on an outing for the first time in years.

“At night I sleep easy, as I know that a Lion somewhere in my district, or in the world made a difference in someone’s life that day.

Lions Alert enables Lions to be the first ones on the ground when there is a disaster,” says Wills.

LCI’s foundation released $10 000 for emergency relief within 48 hours of the Imizamo Yethu fire in last year.

“Lions projects require funding and every cent donated by the public will be used on community projects. As a Lion, you help your community and make an impact on people’s lives, locally and internationally.

You learn to be a leader and network with people in your community and around the world. You’ll grow personally and professionally. And you’ll know that what you do is worthwhile and appreciated. You will energise your life and have fun,” Wills adds.

She says that she has learnt public speaking skills, leadership skills, training and facilitation skills and how to organise projects for a few beneficiaries, to large projects. “I know that in my professional life, I have been appointed to positions, with the extra skills I bring from my Leo and Lions career.”

She attended Governor Elect School and the Centennial Convention in Chicago in July. Geila was one of 20 delegates selected for the Lions faculty development institute in Lomé, Togo in February.

“It was an honour being chosen to become a Lions trainer; to learn new skills and polish older skills up. Meeting delegates from Africa, sharing leadership and project ideas, is something I only ever dreamt about. I was also able to attend the All Africa Conference; an incredible experience and a big thank you to Lions Clubs International, Lions District 410A and the Kirstenbosch Lions Club

for making this trip a reality.

“My goals as district governor are four words: lead, serve, inspire and fun. Lions are leaders in their communities and do take on leadership roles. We serve wherever the need may be. We inspire others and we have fun, while serving those less fortunate. I say to my fellow Lions: ‘If things need to be dif-

hen The Drifters swing by later this year, they promise to bring the house down, and you won’t want to miss out.

The Drifters’ lead singer, Ray Lewis, along with his three bandmates, will be drifting to Cape Town in May and they cannot contain their excitement.

In an exclusive interview with People’s Post last year, Lewis said he was “coming home to the motherland” (“Singers’ love, passion infectious”, 9 September).

With the Drifters earning the respect of other groups of the time, Lewis has always

looked up to them and is honoured to be a part of their legacy.

“As close to perfection as I can get, is what I require from anyone coming into the group,” he says.

It is the art that has kept him on stage for more than four decades now.

Along with some of the classics including “Under the Boardwalk”, “There Goes My First Love” and “More Than a Number”, the singers will also bring new material and something for all ages, Lewis promises.

“Our vocals are on point and our dance steps are always first class, and what stands out is the camaraderie in the group – it is very infectious. There isn’t one individual trying

to stand out. We are a group. There is a lot of love on that stage. We pass it on and I believe the audience can feel it too.

“Also, it is important to understand that our faith is our basis and this is a blessed opportunity. This has been afforded to us as a gift from the Lord and we will deliver what the audience needs – a moment of happiness or a moment of thought.

“We believe in boogying and we will boogie on that stage, but those moments of inspiration are through divine intervention.”

The Drifters will be supported by Nur Abrahams and Emo Adams, with backing from Camillo Lombard and band.

“Come to the concert so that you can have the experience of nostalgia and singing along because you know the lyrics to all of their songs. It is going to be a night to relive all the memories of when you met your loved one or you were on the dance floor dancing to the songs you are going to hear on the night,” says Lombard.

Abrahams also expresses what an honour it is to be sharing the stage with legends.

“I grew up listening to their music. I am pretty excited. It will be hard work but it will be amazing.”

Emerging playwright references modern struggles Kudu – a play tackling some of South Africa’s most vital issues such as land, culture and identity – is currently showing at the Baxter until Saturday 10 March.

Delft-based poet and emerging playwright Lwanda Sindaphi’s visually striking and powerful production Kudu is part of the Baxter Theatre Centre’s exciting new initiative Platform for Special Talent, made possible through funding from the City of Cape Town.

Set in the year 2030, the AmaXhosa nation has taken over the Eastern Cape in an attempt to utilise the land for their prosperity. Three Khoi descendants and their aging cow are migrating to the Eastern Cape. Drama ensues when they come to Intaba KaNdoda, a community once ruled by the Khoi chief Ndoda. The Khoi, having heard stories of how Chief Ndoda was killed in a land dispute, have come to reclaim what they believe to be theirs – they have come to take their land from the AmaXhosa.

“The play is not only about people reclaiming their land, but also about their customs, culture, language and spirituality. Most importantly, it is about people fighting to be acknowledged as existing and not as extinct and forgotten,” explains writer/director Sindaphi.

Sindaphi is an actor,theatre director,published and sought-after poet and playwright, and co-founder and creative director of Lingua Franca Spo- Lwanda Sindaphi ken Word Movement. He studied Physical Theatre and Acting at the Magnet Theatre under Mark Fleishman and Jennie Reznek. He holds a performing Arts Certificate from New Africa Theatre Academy and is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Theatre Making at the University of Cape Town. In 2011 he won the Drama for Life Lover + Another

Poetry Slam and went to compete in the national finals. In 2014 he was named best poet in Africa by Badilisha Poetry.

He has performed in plays like The Heart of Redness, an adaptation of Zakes Mda’s novel, and Running with Goldfish and Gift Wrapping the Sea

by Brink Scholtz.

His own work as writer and director include Achilles Heel, Sins of Others and Death, the Redeemer, all of which were performed at Baxter’s Zabalaza Theatre Festival where he won Best Director and Most Promising Production awards for Death, the Redeemer. Two plays directed by a local have hit the stage at the annual Woordfees in Stellenbosch, and you have one last chance to see them.

The plays, titled Cindershoeler and In die Woud, are being performed at the festival between Friday 2 and Sunday 11 March.

Chenal Kock from Beacon Valley, who until recently was studying at Stellenbosch University, presented the plays at the KKNK Festival in Oudtshoorn.

This is where In die Woud last year received a Kanna Award for the best children’s theatre at the festival.

The play is about a man on his journey to discovery and includes elements of object theatre, soundscape and physical theatre.

The play features three performers, Caleb Petersen, Jurgen McEwan and Kurt Jonas.

“We were asked to convert the play along children’s theatre and that was challenging, but that is when I found a love for children’s theatre,” says Kock.

The other play, Cindershoeler, is about a shoe-curious little girl called Cindershoeler who has been warned to Jurgen McEwan, Caleb Petersen and Kurt Jonas during a rehearsal stay away from Shoeto- for “In die Woud”.

Meet the ‘Me-You-Zic’ man SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121

H

e has been working hard at making and building his brand and has now become a force to be reckoned with in the music industry­.

Local producer and songwriter Gershwin Koen (36) from Beacon Valley grew up in a musical home and started his music journey on the production side around 10 years ago.

“I started off making beats for rappers and making some backtracks for singers. I think that was around 2006 or 2007,” says Koen.

“I come from a musical family and also played in church for most of my life and I loved how music made me feel. Somehow I knew that I would end up doing something on the music scene and in the industry.”

Although he has not studied music formally, he has been growing his knowledge in other ways.

“I am not formally trained but I always have this hunger for more knowledge, so you will always find me reading, attending workshops and listening to weird music when I not busy working,” he says.

He wanted to walk his own path in the industry and was inspired to start his own brand to own his journey. This led Koen to recently register his brand and he now trades under the name “Gershwin and the Music”.

“You always hear these sad stories about some artists and major record labels. I wanted to own all my work, rights and ideas so it was a no-brainer to start Gershwin and the Music in April 2017,” he says.

His sound is a process and he focuses on not only creating a product but putting some of himself into the craft, thus creating a personalised end result.

“I wouldn’t know how to [describe my sound]. I would call it Me-You-Zic, from me to you, and I love all [genres]”.

He has written and produced music for many big names in the industry and is inspired by God, his wife, and his everyday surroundings – good or bad.

“I have produced and or written for artists like Blaqpearl, Jean Carlo, Keziah Petersen, Jason Pretorius, Chad Saaiman, Varonica Meyer, Elton Jansen and Jonathan Rubain to name a few,” he says.

He describes himself as a simple guy who is “a person first, before a musician or producer”.

Growing up in Beacon Valley, Koen has used his childhood to help shape and mould him as a producer and songwriter and it has helped motivate his passion and zeal to succeed in the industry.

“I am very proud of where I come from and my surroundings force me to a better person and a harder worker, and motivate me to make beautiful music and hopefully be an inspiration to someone,” he

says. He is constantly developing more music, with his latest song, “Biggest Fan”, being with Keziah Petersen Music.

“It is a gospel song that is playing on quite a few radio stations around the country and abroad,” says Koen. “Most days I work from home but I also work from other studios and rehearsal venues depending on the need.”

Overall, he aspires to see a well-rounded industry with musicians putting out stellar entertainment.

He adds that artists should get a great support system when starting out in the industry­.

“Finding the right people to work with, mentor and guide you [will help you be a better artist].

This was a challenge for me,” says Koen.

Some of his other challenges when starting out were sleeping too late, and thinking talent alone would be enough to make it in the industry.

Koen also offers music lessons, live band entertainment, events, songwriting, production and music administration under his brand.

antos were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Glendene in an ABC Motsepe Derby game played in Manenberg on Saturday.

Santos were determined not go down in this grudge match, bearing in mind that they lost to their nemesis in the first round of fixtures.

This meant that Glendene had a psychological advantage over them, but Santos wouldn’t give up with their positive attitude and were determined to overturn their fortunes.

Both teams produced extremely highquality ball skills in the midfield area, with Santos briefly outmanoeuvring their counterparts, but Glendene steadied their ship with a spirited defensive display and counter-attack.

Minenhle Mwape netted for Glendene while Modou Jatta did it for the People’s Team.

The Magic narrowly beat Grassy Park 1-0 in their nail-biting thriller played at Old Mutual Sports Grounds on Friday night.

The visiting team had room for improvement, but failed to capitalise on The Magic’s early struggles.

Lethal Magic striker Damian Warley used his blistering pace to escape Grassy Park’s defence to net the winning goal.

New MTB route a hit in race S

am Gaze out-sprinted defending champion Howard Grotts and Mathieu van der Poel to win the Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge at Uitspan Farm in a time of 02:11:50, from a stacked field.

This year’s route was extended to 60km with an extra five added to the existing skeleton designed by Meurant Botha.

While dry and dusty, the trails rode blisteringly fast.

Gaze managed to work his way back, and a bunch including him, Van der Poel and Gert Heyns were together with 20km to go.

In the women’s race Jennie Stenerhag absolutely dominated, spending most of the morning riding alone.

She led from start to finish to successfully defend her title to win her third in a row.

The routes – 20km, 40km and 60km – were consolidated into one day this year, all at a new start/finish venue at Uitspan.

“The 2018 instalment has been a great success,” says David Bellairs, marketing, sponsorship and communications director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

“Despite the very warm weather and the Western Cape being in such a dire drought, I think the riders had a fantastic time,” he says.

“With everything in one place and on one day, we really are covering all aspects and ability of riding – the 20km on some jeep track and then the 40km and 60km routes on some of Simonsberg’s most spectacular single-track on farms like Muratie, Kanonkop, Delheim and Uitkyk ... it just doesn’t get any

Reza Ebrahim, chairperson of Central Athletics and also the owner of NFC, is the person responsible for securing the sponsorship deal with the national car finance company.

“NFC has decided to commit to the race for three years. I am extremely excited about the partnership between NFC and Central. NFC is a market leader in the rentto-buy car industry. Thousands of South Africans who have had difficulty obtaining finance have turned to them for help in order to get back behind the steering wheel. They (NFC) understand the importance of ploughing back into the development of communities though the medium of sport,” explains Ebrahim.

Race director, Wafeeq Williams, believes the cash injection from NFC will definitely go a long way towards easing the tremendous costs involved in staging a road race under the auspices of Western Province Athletics (WPA).

“Organising a race of this magnitude is not an easy task. It is virtually impossible to host a WPA race without the backing of a company like NFC. A lot of work goes into the planning of the race. We are faced with unique challenges every year. And this year is no different.

“We are currently experiencing a water crisis in the Western Cape. It is for this reason that we will be sourcing our water for our race off the grid. That means the water

will not be supplied by the City of Cape Town but will rather come from alternative sources.

“In memory of two of our members who tragically passed on last year, we will be awarding special gold medals to the first 200 men and 200 women to cross the finish line.

The medal for the males will be called the Ridwaan Bardien medal and for females it will be called the Rifqah Lutta-Keraan medal.

This will add a distinctive air of nostalgia to the race. Both Ridwaan and Rifqah played a huge role in the success of this race in the past. We can proudly say that our race was one of only three races in WPA nominated for the prestigious Race of the Year Award last year. “This year we are expecting around 5000 participants. We are confident that the race will be bigger and better and once again exceed all expectations,” adds Williams.
