ore than 900 families have benefited from a food parcel donation by the Community Chest. The parcels were distributed to needy families and feeding schemes across Mitchell’s Plain by ward 78 councillor Eddie Andrews and Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre’s Ashley Potts who applied to the Community Chest for their food relief project. While Potts and Andrews applied for the relief parcels separately, they each received 450 parcels and decided to distribute it from a single point at Dagbreek Hall in Westridge. Potts says as the Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF) deputy chair, he linked up with his counterparts from various subforum to gather a list of neighbourhood watch and safety structure volunteers who were unemployed and in need. “They are tirelessly serving the communities and there is such a need and we wanted

to make them a first priority,” says Potts. Some of the parcels were also distributed to families who reached out to Potts. “We currently have more than 2 000 names on a database waiting for food but we can only work with what the donor gave,” says Potts. Potts says the need in Mitchell’s Plain, like in other areas, is great. “There are so many unemployed and even those who are employed live one paycheck from bankruptcy.” The lockdown did not help this, as many were told they would be put on short time or not receive any income at all. Some do not have a job to go back to, Potts says. Andrews has been busy collecting and distributing food relief parcels since the beginning of the lockdown. “I put out a call for those who need food relief in the ward and we were overwhelmed at the responses,” says Andrews. “We have put ourselves out there to try and connect beneficiaries to food parcels.” Andrews says they received more than 800 in the first day, with that number increasing significantly daily. “We realise the need is great and we will not be able to assist everyone but we will soldier

on and try to reach as many as possible,” says Andrews. The parcels will feed a family of five for up to a month. A total of 2 000 food parcels were assembled and donated to Hanover Park, Lavender Hill and other communities and have fed around 10 000 individuals. The Community Chest initially distributed hygiene packs but expanded its relief programme after the announcement that the lockdown would be extended. It soon became clear that food security would increasingly become the greatest concern with people unable to generate income says Community Chest chief executive officer, Lorenzo Davids. “Our founding document, in 1928, states that the organisation would be formed ‘to serve the destitute’ and the Covid-19 pandemic exposes that need nearly a century later,” says Davids. Each box contained food to the value of R400 that can help sustain a family of five for a month. Groceries included rice, pasta, milk, tinned fish, fruit and vegetables. Strict regulations and protocol were observed throughout delivery, packing and the distribution processes with monitoring and

audits in place to ensure that the donations reach those who it claims to serve. Leanne Reid, Learning in Reach founder and director, emphasises that the need for food security always existed. “At this critical time all our early childhood development centres have been closed and parents are unable to pay school fees and teachers effectively not earning any income this month. This donation is a welcome relief in Lavender Hill because they will enable us to support the women who support the community,” she says. Desiré Goliath, Community Chest spokesperson, agrees. “The Covid-19 crisis has merely heightened an ongoing challenge that our township communities face on a daily basis. With the added pressure of delayed social grant payouts in May, it places a severe burden on already compromised communities. Community Chest will continue to seek partnerships, collaboration and donations for ongoing food relief during the lockdown period,” she says. V To help feed a family, donate to the Community Chest National Emergency Covid-19 Fund.
