wo unrelated families, united by the tragedy of losing a teenage son, have taken a stand in a call for justice.

The Basson and Arendse families took to the corners of Spine Road and Merrydale Avenue on Saturday, holding posters of their sons.

Motorists hooted in support as they passed.

While both cases are unrelated, they share striking and unfortunate similarities.

Both were 19, went to Portland High School, were shot coming from a 21st birthday party and were hailed as heroes.

They also shared the same name: Chad.

Chad Basson was shot and killed last year on Saturday 28 July at 05:15.

“Lentegeur police received a complaint of a shooting in Marigold Street. On arrival at the

scene, police found a 19-year-old who had been shot multiple times in his head. The deceased had passed away on the scene,” said police spokesperson, Cpt Ian Williams­.

Basson was hailed a hero after he used his body to shield others during a drive-by shooting.

Chad Arendse from Beacon Valley was shot and killed on Youth Day. He was shot in Beaufort Street, Rocklands, at 01:30.

Arendse was shot 14 times in the face and head. He was a drum major for the Western Province Drilling Squad and well-loved in his community.

His mother Natasha Arendse says they want justice.

“The suspects are walking free, out on bail,” said Natasha.

Chad Basson’s father, Cornelius Basson, says the march was arranged by a Portland High School learner.

“This is to commemorate all the youngsters who lost their

lives through gun and gang violence.

“We believe that this is a way to keep their memory alive,” says Cornelius.

He says they had invited more families of slain youth.

“We want to show them that we have not forgotten about them and also show the criminals that we as a community will not just sit back.

“Anyone wanting to do this must think twice because we are not happy about this,” he says.

The families are also calling for a faster turnaround time on investigations.

“It is a year and a half since my son was killed and we have nothing yet. We have given them everything,” says Cornelius.

Natasha says she is still heartbroken “I would not wish anyone to go through what we are going through. Especially when you are struggling to get answers,” she says.

he City of Cape Town has extended the application period for public benefit organisations (PBOs) and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to apply for grants-inaid until 20 January 2020.

By applying for this financial assistance these organisations can continue to receive assistance for the current financial year after changes to national legislation limited the options available to the City to give rates rebates. The City has thus found a way to help these organisations despite the nationally mandated amendments. Amendments to the local government: municipal property rates act necessitated a substantial change to the City’s Rates Policy to bring it in line with the amendments. Swift action from officers attached to the Mitchell’s Plain police station stopped robbers in their tracks following a business robbery that was perpetrated at a cellphone shop. The officers went to the store and saw the robbers leaving the store. A shoot-out between police and the robbers occurred and two suspects were shot and injured.

The suspects were transported to a hospital and are under police guard.

Seven suspects aged between 20 and 40 were arrested and two firearms were recovered. Once charged, the suspects are due to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain magistrate’s court. The property stolen from the store was recovered at the scene.

Ticket prices to the Robben Island Museum (RIM) are set to go up in June next year.

As of Monday 1 June 2020, RIM will apply a R50 increase on international tour prices and only a R20 increase on local tour prices.

This means South Africans will pay R400, while non-South Africans will pay R600.

South African children aged between two and 18 will pay R210, and non-South African elderly people will pay R300.

Robben Island’s standard tour comprises of a ferry return trip, transport on the island, a guided island tour and a guided prison tour. Tickets are only sold at Robben Island Museum, Nelson Mandela Gateway, V&A waterfront or through Webtickets as a RIM approved online ticketing platform.

Passengers must arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled times of departure, failure to do so could result in the forfeit of the ticket. Boarding gates close 10 minutes before departure time.

Tickets are not transferable.

Unfortunately, how the rates rebates for these organisations was traditionally assessed and granted is no longer permitted due to the changes in legislation. . The City has, therefore, identified the grant-in-aid process as a mechanism to continue providing financial relief to the affected organisations. A dedicated amount has been budgeted for additional grants-in-aid.

PBOs and NPOs within the City’s boundaries are encouraged to take advantage of the extension and to apply, irrespective of whether they fall within the new properties owned by PBO and used for specified public benefit activities property category or not.

Vandalism at Rocklands library has resulted in delays in the rollout of a digital literacy programme.

“The computers are limited, but for someone who does not have their own computer, it is helpful. The library is not only for books and reading,” he says.

The City is trying to obtain internet access from service providers that will not be affected by cable theft.

Since January, there were 58 insurance claims for incidents at 30 City libraries, totaling nearly R578 000.

“That is half a million Rand that could have been spent on more computers or reading materials or other critical community services. It also places a huge burden on taxpayers.

Libraries are the heart of communities and offer a safe space for learning, relaxation and knowledge-sharing,” says Badroodien.

It is further their hope to expand the SmartCape footprint, which has been aided by the donation of 123 computers from the provincial library services for installation at 22 city libraries.

Libraries are identified based on several factors. “Area managers identified libraries in communities where there is a high demand for more access points in the library.

They specifically looked at libraries in these communities that only had the minimum of five computers and so targeted them to receive more computers if they had the space to accommodate more. The maximum number was also specified by IS&T who had to confirm if their Telkom line has enough capacity to allow for more computers to be added to the network,” says Badroodien.

he roll-out of a digital literacy initiative at Rocklands Library has been completed, despite delays as a result of vandalism.

The City of Cape Town’s planned installation of six computers was set for completion in May but was delayed following the vandalism that occurred.

“Vandalism resulted in broken cables while thieves made off with plugs and ducts,” says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health.

Rocklands now joins four others in offering the service to residents.

Mitchell’s Plain library has 15 computers, Westridge library has 10 computers and Lentegeur has five computers.

Tafelsig library currently has five computers.

Badroodien says the Tafelsig library was also affected by the delays as a result of vandalism and that an additional six computers will be installed at the library closer to the end of November.

“Apart from their core mandate, libraries also offer a gateway to the digital space for learners, jobseekers, entrepreneurs and the public in general through our SmartCape system. However, the service is under serious threat due to ongoing cable theft and vandalism,” says Badroodien in a statement.

Library user Michael Hayes, says having access to the internet close to home, without needing to pay sometimes high rates at internet cafes is beneficial and encourages youth to make use of the platforms.

Learner firefighters earn their badges

lose to 16 000 voters in Tafelsig will head to their nearest polling station tomorrow (Wednesday 13 November) to cast their vote in a by-election for a new ward 82 councillor.

The polling stations will be open from 07:00 to 19:00. These stations are Tafelsig, Hugenot, Perserverance, Yellowwood and Cascade primary schools and the Nelson Mandela Youth and Family Centre. The election will be contested by 10 candidates. These candidates are made up of seven political party representatives and three independent candidates.

The candidates are Phila van der Heever from the Cape Party, Daniel Peter Petersen from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Washiela Harris from The Democratic Alliance (DA), Grant Jeremy Claasen from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Sandra Shirley Poleman from the Democratic Independent Party (DI), Marie Jeanette Olifant from the African National Congress (ANC), Paul Anthony Daniels from the Good Party and independent candidates Chester Arendse, Jaques Brinkhuys and Mogamat Sedick Gabier.

Only registered voters from ward 82 will be eligible to vote.

A total of 51 firefighters will join the ranks of the City’s fire and rescue services following the completion of their eight-month training recently.

“Firefighters must undergo hours of training and prove their proficiency, which is by no means easy. Our new firefighters can be very proud of their achievements and for joining the fire and rescue service,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

Firefighters control and extinguish fires, respond to emergency situations and primarily protect people, the environment and property from accidents and emergencies.

“Our firefighters work closely with the local community to increase fire safety awareness in order to help prevent fires and accidents from happening in the first place,” says Smith.

The group had to pass a tough physical assessment, followed by interviews and then eight months of training in various modules including Firefighter 1, Hazardous Materials Awareness and First-Aid Level 3.

At their graduation ceremony in Epping, the new firefighters were presented with their rank and badge, with the former pinned to the corners of their shirt collars and the badge above the left shirt pocket. They are now permanent members of staff and will be deployed to various fire stations across the metropole.

Dane Smidt was a seasonal firefighter for five years before becoming a learner firefighter.

“I became a firefighter mainly to serve my community and show care for others,” he says.

The summer season is traditionally the service’s busiest time of year and will put the new firefighters through their paces and test their newly-acquired skills. The fire and rescue service noted a near 9% increase in vege-

tation fires year-on-year, between 2018 and 2019. This, in turn, increased the overall number of fires that firefighters responded to – just over 70% of all fires are vegetation fires.

“Summer is the fun, holiday season and at the same time, we want to urge residents to act responsibly as it’s also the time there are high demands on our firefighters. Saving lives and property are their priority and I am confident our firefighters are able to step up to the plate. Added to our efforts is that we’ll soon deploy our team of seasonal firefighters,” says Smith.

T

he Cape Town Society of Model and Experimental Engineers will be hosting its open day from Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 November.

The club is situated in Rondebosch on the corners of Erin, Duke and Campground roads in Croquet Lane behind the Rondebosch Croquet Club. The club has members from areas including Fish Hoek, Tafelsig, Bothasig, Vredehoek, Parow, Milnerton and the broader Cape Town area. The club offers members an opportunity to learn basic engineering skills including basic electronics, track construction and soldering techniques.

Andre van Breda, club chair, says the club has grown considerably in the last few years.

“This used to be a hobby for older people, now we see a lot more youngsters joining.

We have one boy who joined us after visiting last year’s open day. He and his mother came to see what the club was about. He is 14-years-old and he comes to meetings every Wednesday,” says Van Breda.

There are also members in their early 20s.

“The workshop is a hive of activity. We gained so many members in the last four to five years that we needed to buy more equipment,” he says. “I am a firm believer in getting the youngsters involved because when

I am no longer here, I need to have passed my knowledge on.”

The club will be open to the public from 09:00 to 16:00. Entrance fees are R20 per adult and R10 per child. Children under the age of six enter free. The money raised will be used for maintenance of the clubhouse and to fund the various sections of the club with their projects.

“We also support some of the pensioners who are part of the club and can’t afford their subs.

With the fundraisers we subsidise their membership fees. Because we are leasing a building from the municipality, we need to maintain it.

Other funds raised go toward projects at the club,” says Van Breda.

One of the biggest attractions each year is

the model train rides. Children will be able to ride the 5inch gauge live steam engine and parents are welcome to join in. Tickets will cost R5 per child. The rides will be available from 09:00 to 12:00, then 13:30 to 15:30. This allows for maintenance of the locomotives.

Model trains and cars will also be on display at the event with several locomotives and tracks in operation. There will also be a display on how toy soldiers and cannons are made which will be available for sale. Club magazines and books on display will be sold at bargain prices. Refreshments will also be sold on site.

#TSHISA-NYAMA BRAAI CHALLENGE

hree teams battled it out to be named the champions of the Tshisa-Nyama – the first People’s Post/City Vision Braai Challenge – held in partnership with Suidooster and WaterGate Centre.

Brights Hardware, Elgin Free-range Chicken, Willard Batteries and Vodacom also sponsored the event.

The challenge was held on Saturday 9 November. Two reader teams of three each and a combined team made up of People’s Post and Brights Hardware officials competed.

The reader teams were Rick Ross – comprising Andre van der Vent from Mitchell’s Plain, Luxolo Qwalana from Eerste River and Whealer Heyns from Kuils River – and The Mitchell’s Plain Eatables – comprising of Ricardo and Bronwyn Dass and Gavilon Basson.

Teams were judged on creativity, presentation, flavour, theme and gees.

Each team had to prepare a chicken dish using a secret ingredient: coconut milk.

The chicken, wood, spices and braai equipment was sponsored. Teams needed only to bring their gees.

The event took the form of a scavenger hunt where a team member was tasked to answer questions relating to Brights Hardware and Elgin Free Range Chicken to receive meat, spices and utensils.

The competition was judged by Suidooster characters Gideon Lombard (Stefan Gerber), Theresa Sedras (Mrs Jacobs) and Jawaahier Petersen (Kaashifa). The MC for the event was Marco Spaumer (Tim du Plooy).

Fuzlin Sinclair of WaterGate says they are excited to be part of an event that gives back to the community.

“That is what we are all about,” Sinclair says.

At the end of the day, Mitchell’s Plain Eatables was named the winner.

Team members could not contain their excitement.

“We are ecstatic. This is the first time we have entered a competition and this is our first time winning something like this,” says Ricardo.

“We are going to enter again next year and other teams must look out for us,” says Basson.

Their excitement was shared by Rick Ross team members.

“The event was great fun and we were glad to be a part of it,” says Van der Vent.

The judges commended the home-made peppadew sauce.

Qwalana, who made the sauce, says, South Africans love to braai and will not stop braaing. “This sauce is healthier and will help with weight,” he says.

Police get gun and drugs off streets Police arrested a Beacon Valley man for drug possession on Saturday 2 November at 21:15.

Officers attached to the Mitchell’s Plain crime prevention unit were doing crime prevention duties in Kennetjie Street when they searched a house.

Police found 130 units of heroin, three whole and five half mandrax tablets and two packets of tik in a plastic bag in the bedroom.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man.

. In an unrelated incident on Friday 1 November at 18:30, Mitchell’s Plain crime prevention unit officers were on patrol in Boeing Street, Rocklands.

Officers stopped and searched a suspicious man and found a Star pistol with a magazine and one 9mm live round in his possession.

Police arrested the 22-year-old man.

In the same street, officers also arrested several other suspects who were caught smoking drugs in the street.

The Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and Greater Blue Downs planning district is one of eight districts identified by the City for this initiative.

The meetings seek to explain the process in preparing the SDFs; how the SDFs affect local developments and how residents can contribute to identify the challenges, needs, and priorities insofar as it relates to planning on a local area level, and be given an opportunity to do so.

The Mitchell’s Plain meeting will take place on Thursday 14 November from 19:00 to 20:30 at the Rocklands civic centre.

The meetings seek to update SDFs with the latest information about the state of the population, their employment levels and income; the state of the urban and natural environment and heritage; state of development; the supply of and demand for housing; local economy; property market; and current services and infrastructure.

All of this information is included in a Baseline and Analysis Report (BaAR) for each district, inclusive of the challenges, needs and opportunities on a local planning level.

The BaAR documents are currently available on the City’s website and the public is requested to provide their comments on or before the closing date of Friday 31 January.

During the College of Cape Town's official launch of the Welding Academy, the heavens opened and blessed the event to mark the beginning of a new era in Welding. The launch was held on Friday, 25 October 2019, the state-of-the-art Welding Academy is at the College's Thornton Campus, this was made possible by an R3.5 million funding from MerSETA. The project took about a year to complete, it is fully equipped with the latest machinery and equipment on par with industry requirements and standards. The College will enrol the first Welding 30 students in 2020, with a planned three intakes a year. The facility is set up with individual working cubicles for each of the 30 students to be enrolled at a given time.

The facility boasts an improved powersaving ventilation system, air suction for each welding station can be individually switched on and off. The welders will be skilled in four different types of welding – gas, normal arc welding, TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding and MIG welding. MIG and TIG welding are both electrical arc welding processes but are used for different materials. MIG welding is used for thicker, heavy-duty welding while TIG welding is used for thinner pieces of metal.

Welding is one of the scarce skills in South Africa, with many qualified welders being imported from outside South Africa. It is envisaged that with this Welding Academy, companies such as Eskom will recruit qualified welders within the Borders of South Africa. This will also help alleviate poverty and decrease unemployment, especially amongst the youth. The Welding Academy will also help bridge the gap, between Institutions of Higher Education and Training and

he Mitchell’s Plain Lions Club hosted a Diabetes Walkathon, starting and ending at the Rehoboth Community Life Centre in Rocklands, on Saturday 9 November.

The walk started at 09:00 with 174 partici-

pants taking on the 3km and 5km routes.

Bevil Lakay, Mitchell’s Plain Lions Club chair, says the walk was arranged to commemorate World Diabetes Awareness Day observed annually on 14 November.

“Lions Club International has various pillars and one of the main focuses is diabetes,” says Lakay. “Diabetes is the second-

biggest killer in South Africa, according to last year’s statistics. It is becoming quite a big thing but it is a controllable disease.”

The club does free blood pressure and blood glucose tests. The money raised from the walk will assist the club in continuing to offer the tests, free of charge.

The walk was preceded by a free Zumba

warm-up session and was followed by testing at the centre.

The walk was well supported by local police and traffic services.

Participants received goodie bags and medals on completion of the walkathon.

Tourism framework gets green light I am pleased to announce that the City of Cape Town’s Draft Tourism Development Framework (TDF) was adopted by council recently after the public participation process.

Cape Town has vast cultural and heritage diversity and this gives us the opportunity to take a new immersive approach to cultural tourism. By taking this approach, with the core focus on creating more community-based offerings, I intend to make tourism a game-changer for our city.

I have been working with my team on this exciting framework since I was appointed as the Mayco member for economic opportunities that includes the tourism portfolio one year ago. My immediate priority is to ensure the efficient implementation of the TDF so that we boost cultural experiences and help diversify tourism products. This will then translate into more involvement from specific communities who will benefit economically from their participation.

The TDF provides a tourism development strategy and implementation framework for the City between 2019 and 2023.

This framework will be the basis for the annual programme of work and for preparing our tourism budget for the next five years. The TDF builds on the previous framework and consists of five key goals which includes ensuring visitor comfort, improving and diversifying products and experiences, stimulating demand, general community involvement, benefits and support and planning and organising for growth.

The newly developed tourist offerings will bring new products and exciting experiences to life in areas that were previously marginalised and excluded from the tourism landscape.

I believe that products, such as the township cultural experience, will show that we are an inclusive city, ready to break barriers with ground-breaking tourism offerings that open up new opportunities.

We are fully committed to the tourism sector and will invest in programmes and initiatives that foster economic growth in this industry. It, therefore, gives me great pleasure to also launch the Tourism Monitor programme, funded by the department of tourism. This programme will promote access to education and training opportunities to 50 school leavers by providing skills and knowledge linked to various local and national tourist sites.

These monitors will be deployed to several areas and attractions throughout the entire metropole including Langa, Khayelitsha, Hout Bay and the CBD. The monitors will be entrusted with enhancing the experience and well-being of local and international tourists. Their tasks will include acting as a point of reference and offering recommendations to tourists visiting various popular sites. They will also assist tourists who have lost their bearings and require directions. These young monitors will also patrol identified tourist hotspots to ensure they are safe, and report any incidents to relevant enforcement agencies. Programmes like these prove that the City is serious about creating job opportunities for our unemployed youth. Safety is a top priority for the City, and we are putting various measures in place to make this city safer for tourists and residents alike, and it will also help promote a healthy tourism ecosystem. Tourism accounts for roughly 300 000 jobs in our city. This makes tourism a sector with great growth and employment potential. The City’s objective is to facilitate sustainable job creation. I want to do this by providing an environment in which “tourism-preneurs” can flourish and by transforming the tourism landscape in Cape Town into a thriving ecosystem.

As a City, we are ready to take tourism to the next level. The TDF and monitors are just some of the steps my department are taking towards realising this vision.

Taxi challenges examined at workshop In an effort to resolve challenges facing the taxi industry, I held an intergovernmental workshop on public transport with the City of Cape Town.

The workshop follows my commitment after a meeting with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) last month where we addressed challenges facing the taxi industry including the issuing of operating licences for minibus taxis, metre taxis and the issue of identification of e-hailing. In preparation for a formal consultation with the taxi industry, the province

and the City clarified processes and procedures around the issuing of operating licences and other related matters.

Considerable progress was made which will enable me to take the matter forward with the taxi industry.

I am committed to finding amicable solutions within the ambit of the law to ensure that people are transported to work safely and improve efficiency in the minibus-taxi industry which contributes massively to our economy.

We can play our part in public safety Crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele recently should serve as a reminder to all South Africans to remain vigilant in their daily lives.

If you study the report issued by the minister, it is clear that we need to be prepared to encounter an element of criminal activity when we leave our homes. The brave men and women of the SAPS are doing their best to arrest criminals and prevent crime, but you and I can also make a positive difference.

Public spaces carry a range of safety challenges that we need to be aware of and prepared for. It is in these public spaces where opportunistic criminals might be looking out for soft, easy targets. This includes parking garages, parks, shopping centres, and other places where large groups of people provide easy cover for would-be criminals. In public spaces you should leave the expensive items such as jewels at home; if you have a daily walking schedule to and from the mall, vary it often so that

your movement does not become predictable, err on the side of caution. If someone stops you to ask for assistance, keep a safe distance away from them and keep an eye on other movement around you.

Avoid drawing money from an ATM late at night, and if it is urgent rather consider going to an ATM in a well-lit space where a security officer is on duty.

Leave the headphones at home. Anything that causes distraction is to be avoided.

There is safety in numbers. Take a friend with you, so that you can look out for each other. No one likes to think about crime and about what it can do to you or a loved one. Sadly, it has become a reality of life that we have to be prepared for, and a subject we must address with our loved ones and our children.

The best gift we can give is to make sure that the people we care about, know how to possibly avoid crime in public spaces.

The reviews and opinions of more than 1 000 travel writers, bloggers and travel agencies from all across the globe form the basis of the list. The only other African city to make the list is Marrakech (Morocco), which comes in at number 46.

Cape Town is also competing in three categories in the World Travel Awards.

Cape Town is currently the holder of the World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination title. Cape Town was again voted Africa’s Leading Festival and Events Destination for the second consecutive time at the recent Africa and Indian Ocean World Travel Awards in June this year. Table Mountain won the title of Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction and Cape Town International Airport won Africa’s Leading Airport.

All three contenders are up for the prestigious world titles at the 2019 World Travel Awards. The voting period closed on Sunday (10 November) and the winners will be announced in Oman (Middle East) on Thursday 28 November.

Musical’s message encourages youth to make positive choices This weekend I took 350 youth from areas across Cape Town to see the David Kramer musical, Danger In The Dark.

The message of this musical has important lessons for the youth of today, especially those living in communities where crime and violence are challenges.

Danger In The Dark remains relevant as it covers themes of domestic violence, gangsterism and drug abuse. There are many city programmes which work to address these challenges and we hope that the youngsters who see this show will be inspired to make positive choices in their life, be aware of the dangers of making the wrong choices, and instead work hard to succeed at their schooling

and life.

David Kramer’s Danger in the Dark is a rework of the hit musical Poison, which he and the late Taliep Petersen wrote in the 1990s.

The story takes place in 1995 on the Cape Flats when Pamela meets up with Juanita, a friend from her school days.

She realises that Juanita is trapped in an abusive relationship with a drug lord and she is determined to help her friend leave. Pamela is drawn into dark and dangerous places and situations, yet she pursues against all odds for the safety and survival of her friend.

Over 790 000 matric learners write this year’s final exams in South Africa.

The youth aged 15 to 24 years are the most vulnerable in the labour market as the unemployment rate among this group was 55.2% in the first quarter of 2019.

The burden is concentrated among the youth (aged 15 to 34 years) as they account for 63.4% of all unemployed.

The Siyakha Youth Assets Study shows 54% of those who had been involved in youth programmes remained unemployed.

The study, released at the University of Johannesburg in June, found only 27% of those who received training were able to find work, and had a 9% advantage over those who had not done so.

The study, published by the Centre for Social Development in Africa, followed youth who went through the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, Lovelife

the Matrix programme. The City has recently opened its eighth clinic in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein. The other sites are Tafelsig; Albow Gardens; Delft South; Town 2, Khayelitsha; Parkwood; Ruimte Road, Manenberg and Eerste River.

For the last financial year, 2 258 screenings were conducted at the City’s matrix sites with the clean drug test rate for clients at 83% during the same period. The treatment is free of charge.

ome the end of this month, the Westridge Gardens will once again be a hive of activity and entertainment as the DStv Mitchell’s Plain Festival returns.

From Friday 29 November to Sunday 1 December, an expected 40 000 people will return to participate in the Western Cape’s biggest community festival.

“The vision [in starting the festival] was to have a professionally organised, accessible and inclusive event, which showcases Mitchell’s Plain and the Cape Flats as a stable location to come and do business in,” says festival director, Rozario Brown.

“Most importantly, we decided to host an event where any form of illegal drugs, substances or alcohol will not be allowed. We genuinely wanted an event where our people could come together once a year to celebrate all the good and positive things coming from within the community.”

The festival has been going strong for the past 10 years with the City of Cape Town renewing its partnership for the next three financial years.

This will include utilising City and event services; namely electricity services, law en-

forcement, metro police services, traffic management services, fire and rescue services, solid waste, disaster risk management as well as the waiver of venue costs for Westridge Gardens.

“The DStv Mitchell’s Plain Festival is one of Cape Town’s biggest annual events, attracting roughly 40 000 people every year and it is one residents always look forward to attending. Entering into a three-year agreement with the festival is a demonstration of our commitment to supporting communitybased events. As the City, we recognise the importance of events such as the Mitchell’s Plain Festival in making positive change and the economic benefits they bring to the community,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith in a statement.

The festival has exceeded all expectations, says Brown.

“We are very grateful for the continued support from the community, the business community, our social partners and the City of Cape Town. This continued support from our various partners enables us to keep the ticket prices affordable and make the event accessible to as many people as possible.

Most importantly, it enables us to continue making the event free of charge for our most valued persons – the most vulnerable people

within our community, the physically disabled, the pensioners and children under the age of six,” says Brown.

Over the last 10 years, around 400 000 people participated in the event with 1 600 local traders and businesses having the opportunity to share their products and services with the community. The event has also provided a space for more than 100 non-government/non-profit organisations and well deserving causes which benefited from lowcost or free trading and exhibition space.

“Four years ago, we adopted Heinz Park Primary School, one of the poorest schools in the Western Cape located in a community with a massive drug and alcohol abuse crisis.

We are the exclusive sponsors of the annual Heinz Park Primary School Prom, which we host in an effort to ensure that all these learners remain in school and at least complete their primary schooling career. The school had a massive drop-out rate of almost 20% among its Grade 6 and 7 learners on our partnership’s commencement. These figures have dropped significantly,” says Brown.

Brown says the event will once again offer the community an exciting line-up of local artists.

“This event counts among the safest, most affordable and inclusive events in South Af-

rica. Residents are definitely missing out on the amazing free gifts, prizes and free medical checks and other offerings,” says Brown.

“More than fifty local artists, DJ’s and entertainers will entertain the audiences.

Some of the top names include Salome, Robin Pieters, Tye Platinum, Candice Thornton, YoungstaCPT and Early B.” There will be the usual air shows on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well as a motor show on the Sunday.

The High School DJ of the Year Competition finals and so much more will also take place over the weekend.

“Our all-new and improved amusement park rides will offer amazing thrills for the young and young at heart,” says Brown.

Smith encourages residents to attend the event.

“Community events are nothing without the support of the community, so we encourage residents and visitors to make their way to Mitchell’s Plain for this event and support the vendors, artists and entertainers who are in the line-up,” says Smith.

V Tickets cost R50 for people over the age of 12, R30 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Pensioners and children under the age of 6 enter free. Tickets are available through Computicket and at the gate. Prebought tickets are advised to avoid long queues.

Free passes cost VOB SEAN CAMPBELL VOB Macaws only have themselves to blame as they were punished 18-1 by Bellville Tygers in five innings after allowing their opponents 22 free bases in their Cape Town Baseball Federation Major League match at Chukker Road Kenwyn on Saturday 9 November.

Three VOB pitchers allowed 14 walks and two hit-by-pitch, while their fielders made six errors.

Tygers took full advantage by scoring five runs in the first and third inning, three runs in the second and fourth innings and two runs in the fifth inning. VOB scored their solitary run in the fifth inning.

Anthony Phillips recorded three of Tygers eight hits, with Jody Burch recording two of VOB’s four.

VOB started with Derrick Bayliss on the mound who pitched 2.1 innings, allowing five hits, eight walks and two hit-by-pitch, while striking out two hitters. He was replaced by Marvin Mahoney for 1.2 innings allowing two hits, three walks and struck out two hitters. Michael Scritten threw the fifth inning for VOB. Tygers started with Kevin Townend who threw the scoreless inning, no hits and was replaced by Lloyd Stevens who pitched two innings.

At Abe Sher sports field, Bothasig Knights beat Athlone A’s 14-4.

After being restricted to a 2-0 lead after four innings, Bothasig took the game away

from A’s with six runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning.

Bothasig scored two runs off Cameron Fortuin in the first inning from two hits, an error and a walk. Fortuin settled down the next three innings keeping the Bothasig scoreless. He was replaced by Mathew Diedericks after conceding three walks and without getting an out in the fifth inning.

Diedericks came straight into the firing line with bases loaded. Benjamin Smith’s sacrifice-fly to center-field allowed a run to be scored, Justin Lazarus’ base hit to left-field to scored another run and Darren Boltman launched one over the left-field fence for a three-run homerun. Diedericks gave up two walks and three in the sixth inning before being replaced by Dean Jacobs who finished the sixth and seventh inning.

Australia-bound Dylan Unsworth pitched five innings conceding a run from six hits, walked one and struck out seven hitters in his pitching stint. He was replaced by Jared Elario who pitched the last two innings conceding three runs from three hits, two walks and struck out five.

Josh Wentzel, Cameron Fortuin and Jason Carelse each grabbed two hits for A’s, while Benjamin Smith and Darren Boltman grabbed three hits each with Bolman’s including the homerun in the fifth inning.

Clever and steady pitching by Kieran Clackett kept Lansdowne at bay. Clackett struck out 15 hitters, allowing two hits and no walks.

here is only a few days left to get your entries in for the 2019 JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans Race.

The race will take place through the streets of Rocklands and along the Mitchell’s Plain coast on Saturday 23 November.

Online entries close on Sunday 17 November with manual entries closing on race day.

The 5, 10 and 21.1km races aim to promote the vibrance and culture of Mitchell’s Plain while promoting community involvement.

Justin Valentine, Mitchell’s Plain Titans chair says the race has been growing from strength to strength.

“Mitchell’s Plain Titans Athletic Club started in 2006 by the vision of

four individuals from different athletic clubs promoting the sport and having a healthier lifestyle, offering people a better option of sport and alternative way for the youth to engage in sport,” says Valentine.

The club represents a true community organisation.

“The club name and club colours was selected by the people of Mitchell’s Plain. The club’s first ever meeting was held at Westridge gardens and thereafter moved over to Morgen’s Village streets before the residential area was built,” says Valentine.

In 2006, starting with only four members and to date there are 160 members.

ed-hot action filled the track at the Killarney International Speedway at the weekend with the final and deciding round of the World Rallycross (World RX) championship.

In the end, Sweden’s Timmy Hansen was crowned as champion on account of a countback of wins over Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud.

Timmy (Peugeot) arrived in Cape Town just a single world championship point clear of title rival Bakkerud (Audi) and younger Hansen brother and teammate Kevin another five points back in third.

After the qualifying rounds and semi-finals, Timmy’s championship lead was only two points, with just the final left to race and eight points on the table.

Timmy started the final from pole position from Bakkerud, Grönholm, Kevin, Timur Timerzianov and Timo Scheider as the top six lined up two-by-two to decide the world championship over six scintillating laps in sweltering heat to the backdrop of Table Mountain.

Bakkerud made a perfect start to lead from a combative Timmy, but the three world championship contenders became embroiled in a controversial incident, when Timmy made a move on Bakkerud and the two tangled and went off as Kevin also went off in avoidance at the bottom hairpin.

The upshot was that Grönholm led the way

Kevin then had a second spectacular incident at the same corner where he, his brother and Bakkerud had collided on the opening lap, as Grönholm led a disgruntled Bakkerud, Timerzianov and a limping Kevin home after Scheider ground to a halt.

“I am super happy for the sport - the last race with everything on the line was nervewrecking, but I kept focussing and delivered a strong performance race by race through the weekend — there was no room for error — not the smallest mistake,” says Timmy.

“This season is the best in my career with four race wins and now the title — it’s a dream come true and I am so happy for the team — we are first and third in the drivers title with Kevin and me and we are makers champions too — the car has been brilliant every race. I still can’t yet take it in!”

South African motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe was also in attendance: “It is wonderful having a world championship in South Africa in motorsport. I think it is the most exciting form of motorsport anyway, because there are so many good drivers,” he said, adding that he wished World RX was around during his competitive racing days, and implored locals to keep supporting the event in the future.
