O
f the R7.6 million budget allocated to the maintenance of cemeteries for the current financial year across the City of Cape Town, R150 000 is earmarked for the Maitland Cemetery. At present, more than five palisades are missing from the cemetery’s fence and parts of the stone wall close to gate four are gone, leaving it accessible to all travelling along
Voortrekker Road in Kensington. Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, says the money needed for the repair of the fence at the cemetery has been requested during this financial year. The Maitland Cemetery fence has reportedly been damaged as a result of three separate car accidents which, Badroodien says, are currently being investigated by the City’s law enforcement department. “In the wake of the damage caused by the
car accidents, security reported that the fencing was being stolen as well and the matter has been reported to the police,” he says. Asked about the role of the security guards at the cemetery, Badroodien explains that the security service at the cemetery is responsible for public safety and safeguarding the perimeter fences, office buildings and fleet. However, he says the recreation and parks department is in consultation with the company to explore various options to imple-
ment stricter security measures at the facility. Badroodien says acts of vandalism are “unfortunately” a frequent occurrence and the cost of continuous repair is unsustainable. He encourages the public to report cases of vandalism to the local police and the City’s law enforcement department. By the time of going to print, Angeline Grill, Kensington police spokesperson, had not yet confirmed if a case had been opened.
