ould this be the end of the road for the historic building at 358 Victoria Road in Salt River?

It seems there are conflicting opinions when it comes to the future of the building.

Authorities want the 60-year-old dilapidated building demolished while residents want it preserved.

According to community activist Jim Hislop they were first alerted to the seriousness

of the matter when the fate of the building was tabled before the Heritage Western Cape (HWC) Impact Assessment Committee on Wednesday 10 July.

“A total demolition was discussed and would have had the committee’s support, which I find unbelievable,” Hislop says. He adds that this is one of the remaining old buildings in the community.

According to residents, the building, with its façade at the top, holds heritage significance for the area and should be preserved.

“How did they come to this decision when

it is one of the finest remaining buildings lining Victoria Road? “The committee should be protecting the few heritage sites that are left in Cape Town, and Victoria Road, specifically,” adds Hislop.

The City of Cape Town confirms the reports but says nothing has been finalised yet.

In July, he says the HWC approved the complete demolition of this building, deeming it not to be conservation worthy.

Nieuwoudt says HWC would have had regard for both the statement of the significance of the building, as well as its current condition.

“The City of Cape Town is currently considering the demolition and building plan cases, but we can confirm that neither has been approved yet,” she says.

he Community Champions Elders Awards ceremony took place at Media24’s rooftop venue, Nasdak on Saturday 12 October.

The awards, now in its fourth year, recognises older citizens who, despite their social circumstances, are actively making a difference in their communities and the lives of others.

The age category 70 to 80 years was won by Minnie and Daniël Hoorn from Capricorn. Danny Brown from Elsies River was the runner-up and Lydia Nogaga from Masiphumelele placed third.

Margaret Voogt from Blomtuin won the 80+ category, with Peter Knight from Maitland in second place and Sarah Dantu from Belhar in third.

Danny Brown also secured the majority of the public vote to take home the People’s Choice Award.

The awards were presented by the People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers.

Each elder took home prizes sponsored by Spec-Savers, Shoprite, Parow Centre, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision.

Tips to keep kids safe In the wake of the kidnappings which have made headlines over the last few months, Fidelity ADT has issued a general alert to all residents.

Teach your children: . They must always walk to or from school with a friend or friends. . If they get picked up at school, they should never leave the premises. . Younger children particularly must never get into a stranger’s car; even if the stranger claims that someone they love is hurt and that they have been sent to pick them up. . Consider using a password system. If the person collecting them from school cannot repeat the password you and your child agreed on, they should not get into the car. . If a stranger approaches your child, they should not talk to them. . If your child does encounter any suspicious activity, encourage them to get a good look and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as their vehicle. . Make sure your children memorise their full names, address and phone number, as well as emergency contacts.

Using a play phone, teach them when and how to dial 10111.

Remind students: . Older children should be reminded to keep their valuables out of sight at all times and not to use headphones because dampens the ability to sense surroundings. . Alter their route: If they are walking home or to public transport they need to alter their route. “If you feel threatened, you can at least knock on someone’s door for help if you’re walking through a familiar neighbourhood.” . If you are using a taxi service, ensure it is a bona fide service provider. . Be extra cautious to go and meet anyone who befriends you on social media. Always meet in a public space with two or three friends as backup. . Be cautious to be lured by people offering you a job or modelling contract.

Creating a market for everyone T

he Good Shepherd Church in Kensington uses market days to unite the community and support small businesses in the Kenfac area.

Church members were speaking during their third “successful” market day on Saturday 5 October.

They had hosted more than 10 stalls and saw hundreds of residents walking into each shop and socialising within the church premises.

Brandon Sylvester, the churchwarden, says the market days are a multi-purpose initiative that was started to raise funds to support the underprivileged denominations in Cape Town. He says the demand has made it clear that local businesses need a space to meet and showcase their products.

Also, Sylvester says the market is not limited to church members as they do not discriminate based on religion or congregations. “After all we are one community praying to one God regardless of the church you belong to,” says Brandon.

The church hosted its first market day earlier this year, and the plan was to host it quarterly, but it is now being hosted monthly. Realising the need for support of the local businesses, Sylvester says the church decided to not focus on generating profit from the market day itself, but rather allowing entrepreneurs to pay a minimal fee and keep their profits for themselves.

The church then embarked on a win a car lucky draw – encouraging the public to buy tickets to the event taking place on Saturday 30 November, where a winner will be announced.

Through this, they hope to raise over a million Rand, and Sylvester says the ticket sales are doing well. He says the church gets positive support from the community.

Crystal Willenburg, one of the educational toy vendors, says it was her first experience at the market. She heard about it from a friend. She says it is nice when a church assists the community, bringing people together and supporting each other. Market days are a source of income for her and her sister, Grizelda Adams.

nce covered in unsightly graffiti, the Station Road subway in Observatory now boasts a rainbow of colours.

Observatory residents teamed up with the Observatory Improvement District (OBSID) and acclaimed artist Tanya Bonello to transform the subway tunnel into a friendly and accessible space over two consecutive weekends in September.

“This is the second completed community arts project. The first one was held at Trill Road Station Subway on 24 and 25 May. The community took ownership of this space and four months later it is still graffiti-free,” says Amanda Kirk, chief executive officer of OBSID. Prior to the makeovers, graffiti artworks and tags were removed from the subway walls, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Straatwerk – a non-profit organisation – and its “Projekt OPHelp (Project Operation Help)”. OBSID continues to fund its work in the public spaces of Observatory.

servatory and uses the subway tunnels to cross from the east to the west side, daily.

In May, she had the idea to turn the formerly dark and somewhat depressing subways at Observatory train station into bright and cheerful spaces.

Pixels (single squares of colour which together form the whole of a digital image) were the inspiration behind the Trill Road design. “It represents the digital age that we are living in,” she says.

The Station Road subway’s design was drawn from rainbows and what they represent. She explains how it also symbolises peace, serenity and hope, and how it too can be broken down into single blocks of colour which are easy to paint.

“We wanted to make the arts project is as accessible as possible. Residents passing through could just pick up a brush, paint a square or two and then move on, or they could spend three hours helping out – it was up to them,” says Bonello.

Both projects enjoyed the support of the community. About 30 residents pitched in at the Station Road subway arts project.

“There was lots of singing, talking and children running around. And every single person passing through expressed their joy

and gratitude,” says Bonello.

Kirk says the makeovers also had a positive effect on the people who work there.

“The cleaning teams take extra care to keep the subways neat. Projects like these help to raise the level of pride they have in their work.”

OBSID funded the materials for the subway activation as part of its arts, sports, heritage and culture portfolio. Six people from its Streetscapes project – a work diversion programme for people living on the streets – also assisted during the Station Road makeover.

Those on the programme are supported by social auxiliary workers and social workers on an individual basis and also learn to work and function in groups.”

Kirk and Bonello say projects like these uplift the community.

“Thank you to OBSID for funding the project, and with gratitude and love to all the people who contributed their time and energy,” says Bonello.

Kirk also thanked George Kiewiets (Metrorail special project manager for the Western Cape region), who picked up a brush and joined in during the arts project. Kiewiets says Prasa appreciates the support.

NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku wo aspiring youth from Cape Town recently launched a limited edition T-shirt designed to promote women’s empowerment and to create awareness around the hate crimes committed against young girls and women.

The launch was at Grade Africa in Salt River on Saturday 28 September.

Salt River-based Zaid Osman, founder of Grade Africa, travelled across the continent learning different cultures and fashion, and Kim Jayde, an influencer, began her career in modelling in Cape Town before travelling around the country.

Jayde is from Johannesburg, but she had spent four years living in Bo-Kaap before returning home.

When the dawn of gender-based violence hit home, the two joined hands to appeal for support to raise funds to help the vulnerable.They launched a limited edition T-shirt.

Proceeds of the sales will be donated to the Home of Hope for girls in Johannesburg.

As a young entrepreneur eager to make an impact, Osman says: “I often feel like our

voices need to be heard.

“It is important to inspire the vulnerable to be able to create solutions and change their current circumstances.”

He says he often hands out food and clothing to the homeless people in Woodstock and the CBD, but decided to open his heart and raise a couple of thousand Rands for women.

“Working with Kim is really about empowering young females across the country and the world through a universal language of fashion,” says Osman.

Jayde says the recent reports of genderbased violence are worrisome. She is glad to be able to work in two parts of the country she calls home to create awareness and say, as young people, they care and want to be part of putting an end to the situation.

Jayde says the launch went well and they have since been receiving a positive response. They are anticipating prolonged campaigns and activations in and outside of Cape Town.

However, she says they do not want to primarily make more sales, but rather send a message against the scourge of violence against women and children.

The City of Cape Town’s customer service team will be at Kensington Civic Centre on Tuesday 15 October from 09:30 to 13:30.

o how many homeless people are there in Cape Town? With World Homeless Day marked around the world on Thursday 10 October, this conundrum was again under the spotlight.

An answer, provided by an enumeration study conducted in November 2018, has been drawn into question by service providers who work with the homeless.

According to the Western Cape government’s 2019 statistics, released to the press in June, there are about 4 862 homeless people in the greater Cape Town area, with more than 700 living in the central business district (CBD).

This constitutes a 16% decrease when compared to the findings of a study done four years earlier. The study released by the City’s then Mayco member for social development and early childhood development (SDECD) Suzette Little ’s directorate, “Street People Research 2014/15”, found there were 7 383 homeless people in Cape Town at that time.

Jon Hopkins, chief operations officer (COO) of U-turn, a registered Christian non-governmental organisation (NGO), says the reality experienced by U-turn or any of its NGO partners across the City is the exact opposite. The SDECD also entered into a dialogue with street people and the street people sector at a World Homeless Day event held at Bellville South Civic Centre, Bellville South, last Thursday.

Several service providers attended the event, including City health, the Matrix clinic for substance abuse rehabilitation support, Sassa and the department of home affairs.

The engagement aimed to determine the needs and provide an opportunity for closing the gaps in responding to people living on the street.

Badroodien was a speaker at the event.

He says the City hopes to develop an improved interface model between it and organisations that provide services to street people.

“We know that there is no current silver bullet to solve this and we will look to working with partners who are able to support our positive social intervention programmes,” Badroodien says.

The dialogue will inform a larger engagement with the sector in November to strengthen the interface between the City and the street people sector.

The event will be attended by 240 street people and will include a pop-up clothing stall, dignity station and hair grooming.

Music festival planned for Kenfac NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

wo Kenfac residents are on a mission to establish a Youth Music Festival provisionally planned for December this year.

The founders – Colonel James Jonas, a cluster detective co-ordinator, and Ikey Gamba, Ikey Gamba Dance Band owner – are both passionate about music and want to share their skills by uplifting youth in their community.

The duo will run auditions at St John’s RC Primary every Saturday between 12:00 and 17:00.

They invite youth from Kensington and Factreton areas to participate in the initia-

tive. They hope to showcase 20 artists on the day. A variety of music genres will be represented and dance groups will also be welcome.

Currently, there is no funding for the project. Jonas says, instead of donating funds, residents and local business people are encouraged to consider sponsoring anything that can be used at the festival.

This could be instruments, sound systems, stage equipment or even time.

Jonas and Gamba hope the event will help to keep the youth in their community off the streets and safe from social ills.

Born and bred in the area, they say it is sad to see so many of the youth being lost to gangsterism. They want to show them

there are alternatives to gangsterism.

They say everyone in the community must play a part to restore hope and to uplift the youth.

Even though the festival is a new initiative, it is important to hold auditions first, say Jonas and Gamba, because they do not want to see participants making “fools of themselves”.

Jonas says their long-term goal is to discover talent and to provide a platform to nurture it.

“Who knows, one day someone could spot the talent and end up sponsoring that child, helping him or her make a career of it,” adds Gamba.

Gamba started doing outreach work in

the community as an unqualified music teacher seven months ago.

He has since identified the need for a bigger platform.

Gamba says they did not want to turn it into a competition but rather wanted to create an opportunity for the youth to show off their talents.

Since one of the festival’s objectives it to combat crime, the two say they have approached the police to come on board and to be part of driving the initiative.

Sergeant Angeline Grill, the spokesperson for the Kensington police station, confirmed having been approached and says they look forward to being part of the initiative.

FUTURE SOCCER STARS COME TOGETHER: The City of Cape Town applauds all those that participated in the four-day-long Lucky Star Cup at Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory. The ninth annual tournament kicked off on Thursday 3 October and ended on Sunday 6 October. It saw 128 local teams playing against each other, with up to 1 500 junior players showcasing their skills.

They were joined by the development teams from Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Kaizer Chiefs and the KwaZulu-Natal Football Academy. Mayor Dan Plato says events like these showcase and provide a platform for future stars of this country while bringing diverse groups of people together. he start of the Cape Town Baseball Federation’s new season kicked off this past weekend which included a new league structure for the Major League and Promotion League teams.

The Major League has reverted to an eight-team league with last season’s top six, Bothasig Knights, Bellville Tygers, Athlone A’s, Maitland Giants, VOB Macaws and Durbanville Villains joined by the top two from last season’s Major League B: Van der Stel and Grassy Park Crusaders.

The Promotional League now consists of Westridge Yankees, Helderberg Pirates, Thistle, Battswood, Milnerton Mavericks, Lansdowne Eagles and Silvertree Titans.

The Major League opening fixtures saw VOB Macaws capitalise on Athlone A’s six errors to run out 9-7 winners at Vangate Sports Complex on Saturday 12 October.

A’s out hit VOB 7-4 leaving nine runners on base compared to VOB’s eight.

National team pitcher Dean Jacobs started the pitching for A’s and was let down by his defence to allow three runs in the first inning from two hits.
