“Y

our circumstances and the community you come from shouldn’t determine what you can achieve in life.”

These are the words of a proud 35-year-old resident of Hanover Park.

Renshia Manuel, a single mother of four, has walked off with third prize for her local business, “GrowBox”, at this year’s Engen Pitch and Polish entrepreneurial workshop and competition.

The six-week workshop was hosted by Engen Petroleum Ltd and Nedbank, powered by Raizcorp and supported by national media partner, Caxton Local Media.

Manuel says the exciting programme was based on teaching entrepreneurs from across the country to present a winning pitch that is clear and focused and to give local communities access to professional guidance. The finals were held in Johannesburg last month where the winners were announced.

Manuel’s win comes from manu-

facturing and supplying fully stocked vegetable boxes for the individual with a small or limited land space, giving them the opportunity to grow their own food within small spaces. Her boxes come fully stocked with the grow-medium and vegetable seedlings in a hassle-free veggie garden setup.

The shy local says she worked as a librarian for six years before losing her job in 2015.

“The school could no longer afford to keep us due to an increase of kids who could not afford school fees. This was a really hard time

for me and my kids, having to survive with support from my family and friends. During this time I had to knock on doors with CVs that were never answered,” she says.

She says being unemployed was frustrating and during her time at home she started growing her own food. This is where her nursery idea came to life. She started taking it further by growing all sorts of vegetables in her backyard, a space which few have in the area due to structures being erected for accommodation.

As the festive season is upon us, and as the work year closes, it is commonplace to reminisce and look back on the year that was.

An overall tragic year with 61 children murdered in a mere few months carried in all major headlines and the drought crisis being the talk of the town for months now.

On a positive note talent in the Western Cape shone locally and on the world stage as the province is home to Miss Universe, Demi-Leigh Nel Peters, Miss SA Adè Van Heerden, Idols SA winner Paxton Fielies, The Voice SA winner Craig Lucas, SA’s Got Talent winner Anecnote and more recently SA Hip Hop Awards Lyricist of the Year Youngsta CPT, among others.

And as we put the 49th and final edition for the year on the streets today, I am reminded of many amazing events, initiatives and stories that we have covered and been a part of this year.

This was the first year that People’s Post took on a year-long charity drive, focusing on various topics every month. We also brought home some awards.

And while we all take a break from print, be sure that we will continue to serve the communities in the new year, bringing you hyper-local news, exciting content and telling it as it is.

FROM PAGE 1 “I always had a passion for gardening, especially growing my own food. In 2016, when I saw an advertisement in the paper looking for unemployed youth who had business ideas and who could possibly empower the community, I immediately took the opportunity to take my nursery idea and enter the competition,” she says.

“This was my first competition entered and my idea was selected. I came in third place in #YouthStartCT, a City of Cape Town programme. At this time my business was just an idea and then I transformed the idea into reality by using the award to register my business and get the necessary start-up stock with the R5000 cash prize.”

She never stopped wanting to enter other competitions and go bigger. Manuel says she excitedly entered this year’s Pitch and Polish competition.

“It was my first time competing in an event like this and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my family and me. This was now something different to the norm as I now had to think bigger and brighter,” she says.

She says the programme is designed to give smaller communities input on how to polish their business pitches. It is also an opportunity to have their ideas brainstormed and tested, while learning valuable business skills to

create a well-informed investor-ready pitch.

“It was also a great opportunity for me to get the experience needed to grow my business. They gave us workshops throughout the competition and educated us with various skills. I thought to myself, how can I use this nursery to empower the community of Hanover Park? This was the initiative coming from me after being unemployed and my aim now was to grow it with the hopes of teaching others.”

Manuel says that her achievement in bringing home another third-place trophy to her community proves that any unemployed and single mother can achieve their goals.

“Our mothers and unemployed people in Hanover Park need to believe in themselves. With enough determination and effort you can achieve anything. This was a huge learning curve that your circumstances should not define you,” she says.

“GrowBox is a legacy from me to my children and if we work together we can make a success out of this. I want to empower others and so I want to give them the opportunity to grow their own food no matter where they live.”

She says her local company has a good relationship with The Ark, the organisation that makes the boxes for her.

“From here I then grow the vegetable seedlings and do it according to what the customers like. I give them the boxes fully stocked with grow-medium and seedlings in an easy veggie garden setup,” explains Manuel.

“I already have a number of customers and hope to grow my business. I am the only person in the household that brings bread to the table and I depend on my GrowBox income. There is still a lot that I need to learn. I spoke to my mentor last week and we looked at my goals towards 2018. I would like to get more training and additional support to grow bigger. I would also like to empower and grow my own community, especially unemployed mothers. I want to extend a helping hand.”

hose who take chances with driving under the influence of alcohol this festive season are in for a big surprise.

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works, in partnership with the police and the Directorate for Public Prosecutions, unveiled its state-of-the-art mobile alcohol evidentiary unit in Athlone on Friday.

The unit will be able to conduct checks on site without having to take motorists and officers away from the scene.

The mobile unit, which cost R400 000 to repurpose, is a duplicate of the existing infrastructure found at the Vangate Alcohol Evidence Centre, which is usually used when administering evidentiary breath alcohol testing.

Doors open for three families T

he City of Cape Town made the dreams of three families come true recently with the handover of a set of keys and two title deeds.

Safia Moos is 72 years old and has been on the housing database for 27 years. She previously lived in Manenberg.

Moos was handed the keys to her rental unit, which she will occupy with her son and two grandchildren.

Moosa, a pensioner, welcomes the opportunity to take occupation of the rental unit in Albow Gardens.

The unit was previously occupied by the City’s Home Ownership, Transfers and Tenancy Management Department and was used as a local housing office.

The unit was underutilised, as it was only operational on certain days of the week.

Mayco member for assets and facilities management, Stuart Diamond, requested that the unit be upgraded and prepared for occupancy.

“The City’s rental units are in high demand and allocations are made in order of the date of application.

“The handover is testament to the City’s commitment to empowering some of our

most vulnerable residents by providing them with shelter or turning them into firsttime property owners,” says Diamond.

Those interested in applying for the City’s rental units must register at their nearest housing office for their names to be added to the central housing database, as this is the only way to access the various housing opportunities.

Tenants who are interested in taking ownership of their rental units can also enquire at their nearest housing office to find out if they qualify.

David and Verona Stoffels and Cathrina Thyssen were also grateful to receive the title deeds to their properties in Belhar ahead of the festive season.

“The handover of keys and title deeds is an indication of our commitment to bring about redress for our vulnerable residents.

We will continue to make every effort to ensure that beneficiaries receive their keys and title deeds to the rental units where applicable.

“We trust that our housing beneficiaries will maintain their properties to the highest standard and preserve them as a valuable asset for their children,” adds Diamond.

Beware festive scam artists City of Cape Town policy prohibits staff from asking for “Christmas boxes”; however residents are free to give a voluntary donation.

Residents should also be aware of scam artists posing as Solid Waste Management staff over the festive season, warns the City.

The City’s Mayco member for informal settlements, water, waste services and energy, Xanthea Limberg, says residents should note that there is a policy in place that strictly forbids its staff from asking residents for socalled “Christmas boxes” and from soliciting donations.

“City staff are appropriately remunerated and should not under any circumstances be asking residents for donations. If residents believe that excellent service has been pro-

vided, they are of course at liberty to give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill.”

Residents are urged to report any contraventions to the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089. Apart from the date, time and place, a vehicle registration number should be provided so that the alleged culprits can be identified. Residents can also report this to Wastewise.User@capetown.gov.za.

Such reports will be investigated immediately.

Where residents are willing to testify, the City will be able to prosecute offenders. Residents should also be aware that certain opportunists attempt to pose as City staff at this time of the year.

t was a memorable day for members of the Lansdowne Civic Centre when they received the keys to a newly renovated community hall on Thursday morning.

The Civic Centre in Church Street received an upgrade after almost 50 years. The auspicious occasion was celebrated among role players of the project during an official handover by ward councillor Mark Kleinschmidt on the day.

Kleinschmidt says the “grand old lady” of Lansdowne required an upgrade after many years of service. “The community of Lansdowne has grown and there was a need to increase the entire space and library presinct to accommodate the growth in the area, which has also become a popular residential suburb. This centre has and still plays host to a myriad of community functions and events including special celebratory occasions, meetings, weddings and community skills empowerment training programmes,” he explains.

He says the City of Cape Town implemented the renovations, which lasted for a period of six months, at a cost of R800 000. It included the upgrade of the ablutions and the sanding and varnishing of the parquet tiled floors, the establishment of the councillor’s ward 60 offices, rehabilitation of the front facade and upgrading of the paved area. The hall and stage area have also been redecorated and repainted and the curtains cleaned.

Kleinschmidt says guests who plan to book the hall in the new year will walk into a brand new kitchen and toilet space with a modern finish. “Brand new cupboards were installed in the kitchen and the toilets

The centre also received a brand new shower for the use of City staff, and all councillors’ offices have been painted and cleaned. The bathrooms also accommodate disabled visitors. Kleinschmidt thanked the

Lining up to join in safety pilot NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

F

ive southern suburbs policing precincts are in line to be included in the City of Cape Town’s Neighbourhood Safety Team initiative, should a pilot project be successful.

The first Neighbourhood Safety Team (NST) was deployed in Delft last week and the City has identified the 10 policing precincts with the highest crime rates to roll out the initiative. These include Steenberg, Grassy Park, Philippi East, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Khayalisha, Nyanga and Kraaifontein.

Between 90 and 120 personnel will be deployed in each precinct over this term of office, explains Mayco member for safety, security and social development, JP Smith.

“The aim is to expand the existing enforcement interventions while also enhancing the City’s social investments through social development projects. Delft is the first of these 10 police precincts where this initiative will be deployed and will serve as the proof of concept test case before the initiative is expanded,” he says.

“Over the years, the City has explored various interventions to address crime in the most vulnerable communities. These include the Stabilisation Unit, school resource

officers, neighbourhood safety officers, the Gang and Drug Task Team and a violence interruption intervention. The NST initiative combines all of these into an integrated intervention that will be sustained for at least three years.”

There will be continual assessment of the impact that the initiative has on crime in the area. In a parallel process, recruitment, training and the acquisition of resources for the next group will continue in preparation of their deployment, he explains.

This is planned for July next year, depending on the availability of budget.

“The fight against crime doesn’t rest with enforcement alone. In fact, many crimes are

but by-products of deeper social issues that cannot and should not be solved through enforcement only. We have pulled in other crucial services and programmes to be part of this initiative and it will be interesting to see the impact that this has on crime levels. The NST will be a constant presence in the area of deployment, which means that the team members will over time develop a good understanding of the dynamics in the area that will in turn aid and inform their approach,” says Smith.

The NSTs will be deployed on a shift basis in Delft. The format for deployment in the other nine precincts will be determined by the lessons from the deployment in Delft.

More than 60 children were treated to a Christmas party at Vangate Mall on Tuesday.

More than 60 children with their caregivers gathered to have a three-course meal with their favourite man in a red suit – Father Christmas.

The spokesperson of Vangate Mall, Gouwa Waja-Stemmet, says the church’s orphans were bright-eyed and excited for the day.

“We were really happy to be able to host them on the day. It is always an eye-opener to all of us to see these things. We take for granted spending R20 on a cooldrink or something like that. It is really heart-warming and we can see the need, because we need to make sure that we give back,” she says.

She adds that the children rely on the church’s soup kitchen for their daily meal.

“We decided that we want to help them out and make sure that they have a good Christmas. We understand that they will not be receiving any Christmas gifts, so we wanted to make sure of that as well,” adds WajaStemmet.

Meanwhile ward 44 councillor, Anthony Moses, welcomes the spirit of giving being shown over the festive period.

“This is a very good initiative and partnership between Vangate Mall management, as well as the various community stakeholders and also Panarottis and all the other companies who have given towards these kids,” says Moses.

He adds that he is in contact with the church and the children on a regular basis.

“When I saw these kids a month ago I visited some of their homes, and with some of the challenges they are facing I was quite amazed. That is how it came about that Van-

gate Mall took the initiative to have a Christmas party for the kids. For me it is something very good. It is something very inspiring to our kids. It is also a way of showing the community that Vangate Mall is not only about making business and money, but also the social upliftment of the community and we start with our kids. That is something great to have as a start within our community, with Vangate Mall giving back to our community,” says Moses.

Vangate Mall will continue to carry out more CSI projects directed at the local community in the new year.

The centre ran a summer market this past weekend, which gave the community a chance to sell their goods. “We [even did] advertising for them to bring people in to buy the goods,” says Waja-Stemmet.

“We also have a kiddies’ campaign where we want to bring beach activities to Vangate Mall. We won’t have water, but we will have a gigantic sandpit and beach activities like volleyball, badminton and sandcastle building, and we want to see if we can give away some nice goodies. Coca-Cola will come on board and give away some free cooldrinks,” she adds.

Moses also calls for more organisations to get involved in giving to the less fortunate, especially this time of the year.

“This is one of the ways that we look after our communities in the festive season period. This is also a crime preventative method in how we can take our children off the streets and put them into a safe space. I just want to say thank you very much to all the residents who will be helping during the festive season. Our communities should be safe out there and look after themselves. I just want to say a happy festive season to everybody as well.”

Tears of joy at old age home AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem There were tears of joy and happiness when gifts were distributed to over 80 residents at Erica Place, Home for the Aged in Silvertown on Tuesday. The surprise visit by members of the Natural Health Ladies Workshop (NHLW) was headed by founder member Shanaaz Parker.

Prior to handing out the presents, Parker and her team entertained the residents with a lively performance of “I will follow you” one of the songs from the movie Sister Act. This rendition was thoroughly enjoyed by both residents and staff, with many joining

“What a joy to see them smile. I chose the residents of Erica Place to be recipients of the gifts after one of my members, who lives in the area, told me about the good work being done there. Erica Place is also multi-denominational which fits into the ethos of the NHLW which is open to all, regardless of race, creed or religion,” Parker says.

She says many members of the NHLW were moved to tears of sadness and humility at the joy and happiness the gifts and entertainment brought to the elderly, many frail.

Parker and her ladies left Erica Place feeling satisfied that the NHLW motto of “Fitness with a cause” had been put into action.

New home for dumped baby AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem Christmas could come early for a local paramedic after being called out to oversee an abandoned baby boy found in the Lansdowne area last week (“Baby boy abandoned”, Peoples Post, 12 December).

The boy was found alive in St Joseph’s Road in the early hours of the morning by local community members.

The baby, believed to be a few weeks old and dumped by his mother, has been named after Alexander the Great and has hopefully already been blessed with a new mother. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) worker Mercia Esterhuizen, who responded to the call and checked the baby’s vital signs, is unable to conceive and now hopes to make him her own.

A woman was caught on CCTV footage dumping her baby in front of a house in Lansdowne. Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka of the Lansdowne Police Station says: “There are no new developments in the case at this stage. The baby’s mother has not been located anywhere. We would like to call upon people to come forward with information – if you know of someone who had a baby and suddenly you

don’t see the baby, please report it to the Lansdowne police or call 021 700 9000 or 082 576 2804.”

Ward councillor Mark Kleinschmidt says: “This is a feel-good story. Ironically the story of the abandoned baby Alexander has turned out to be a good one. The paramedic who attended to him intends on adopting him. Alexander’s story, like those of baby Moses and baby Jesus, is a good news story to be cherished this Christmas season,” he says.

“We anticipate greatness for Alexander. He is currently being cared for at a place of safety, which is confidential due to the sensitivity of the case. The social worker has been to court and the case has been heard. The process will now begin in terms of him being a foster child of the state.”

“But I would implore the State to heed the request and I will support the request for the paramedic to be given the opportunity to be screened and tested, without fear or favour, so that she has the opportunity to adopt him.

“She has already made preparations with prams and baby clothing and more.

She has fallen in love with baby Alexander and we support her in getting this opportunity to adopt.”

January . Manenberg police confiscated R100 000 worth of drugs in Johanna Court. A 48-yearold man and two women, aged 25 and 35, were arrested and appeared in the Athlone Court on charges of possession of drugs. . Hanif Loonat was removed as chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster Community Policing Forum (CPF). This was not the first time that Loonat has been removed. He was suspended as the chairperson of the Western Cape CPF in 2013 before being reinstated. He was also ousted as Lansdowne CPF chairperson in 2015.

February . People’s Post photographer Rashied Isaacs launched his safer sports fields’ initiative.

Isaacs started investigating the issue around 18 months previously when he started his research, which he says combines his two favourite things, emergency preparedness and photography. . A new lab at York Road Primary School was officially opened by UWC’s Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA) to improve the teaching and learning of science and mathematics. It looks to facilitate learning by improving school infrastructure.

March . The public release of the top 100 water users in Cape Town caused mixed reaction amongst resident. The highest recorded water user is reported to live in Haywood Road, Crawford. . The Civic Association of Rondebosch East

elected new members to represent them.

April . Traffic-calming measures were implemented along Turfhall Road after several accidents resulting in injury and death at the crossing. . A 52-year-old man was arrested in Turflyn Walk, Hanover Park. Police confiscated various pieces of ammunition from him including shotgun rounds and 9mm rounds.

May . Subcouncil 11 rejects an application to grant Jumbo Cash and Carry in Govern Beki Road liquor license. . Various neighbourhood watches in Lansdowne received new safety gear from the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate, as part of the ward’s allocation funding.

June . Six men were arrested after a man was stabbed in Wetton. A scuffle broke out after the men were involved in a car accident with the victim. The men fled to a local club where they were arrested. . Lansdowne police investigated a robbery at a flower shop in Old Strandfontein Road after four armed men took cash and cellphones from customers.

July . A six-year-old girl from Silvertown inspired her family to raise awareness of the difficult disease she has to live with. They established Brave Little Hearts South Africa, in honour of Thaakirah Matthews who was born with congenital heart disease in 2009. . Hundreds of people made their way to

Regina Coeli Catholic Church in Belgravia on 27 June to pay their last respects for a local community hero Hilda Paulsen. The 83-year-old community and political activist played an active role in various communities since the early 1980s.

More fun for little bugs From a small hotdog stand and pony rides in 2007, Bugz Playpark has grown into a destination that sparks the imagination and develops core skills in growing children.

Bugz party-goers celebrating the playpark’s 10th birthday on Saturday 9 December were treated to fun-filled activities including a mime artist, a giant bubble corner, a magic show by Regardt Laubscher, a performance by Limited Edition Drum Corps SA, a character parade and so much more.

To add to the exclusive birthday celebrations, Bugz Playpark displayed a spectacular birthday cake, which was shared with the 1000 attendees on the day.

“Bugz Playpark was created so that we

would preserve the magic of being a child for all children, including those with disabilities. We are truly humbled by the massive turnout of loyal Bugz supporters who attended our birthday bash. We believe that Bugz Playpark would not be the success it is today without each and every one of them,” says founder, Lise Liebenberg.

Liebenberg’s five-year goal is to improve the park’s offering by developing a more extensive toddler section.

Twenty new traffic officers will be watching the city’s streets with hawk eyes this festive season.

The new recruits received their certificates at a graduation ceremony on Friday 15 December after completing their studies and practical assessments.

These rookies are the latest group of recruits to have completed the programme, six months after 30 others graduated.

A selection process to whittle down the thousands of applications meant candidates had to complete written and physical assessments.

This was followed by a round of interviews, medical examinations, criminal checks and reference checks.

The group of 20 that was left standing after the rigours of the assessment then completed a 12-month Further Education and Training course in Road Traffic Law Enforcement, offered in partnership with the Metro Police Training Academy.

The course also included training in handling firearms, conducting roadblocks and point duty, and restraining techniques.

“The learnership programme has made it possible for us to replenish staff numbers where officers have retired or resigned, but it is also an opportunity to increase the number of traffic officers in Cape Town. Road safety continues to be one of our biggest headaches and so these new recruits will have their work cut out for them,” said JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security.

“I also caution the public not to underestimate the rookies. At our recent annual awards, one of the 2016 graduates was a nominee for officer of the year after generating nearly 6000 cases, confiscating 168 cellphones and making 49 arrests in his first year on the job.

“That is the calibre of officer who is donning the uniform and is indicative of the passion and enthusiasm that these graduates bring.”

fter two days of auditions, the top 20 in a local talent competition have been selected.

After several weeks, the Cape Town Super Talent Search Competition judges have selected the best of the best in the various categories including singing, dancing and poetry (“Mother of a contest”, People’s Post, 3 October).

The Plain Media and Performing Arts Foundation, founded during the filming of Mitchell’s Plain: The Movie, established the competition in October.

CHLOE RAUBENHEIMER (14):

“My passion for singing started when I was six-years-old. Seeing people’s faces light up made me feel better about myself. I tend to see the good in everything I do. I tend to put other people ahead of myself and I try to do it for the younger generation to help uplift the community,” she says.

DANIELLE JONATHAN (18): She describes herself as shy and quiet.

“My hobbies are singing, dancing, and writing. These little hobbies have gotten me through most tough times I have had to face growing up, especially around the violence with gangsterism. My goal in life is just to be successful enough to provide for my parents and give back to them and my community as they have supported me all these years.”

There is a cash prize of R10 000 and additional prizes to the value of R40 000.

Robin Van der Byl, founder of the organisation, says the contest was set up to create a platform for Cape Town talent. The organisation is the host and the judges are industry professionals.

The hope is to have several months of training before a road show in the various parts of the Western Cape.

JESSE VISAGIE (20): “I’ve always been driven from a young age to become someone that has a stable life and knows what they want in life,” she says. “As hobbies, I exercise at home or gym. I find it important to keep in shape and look good because presentation of oneself is very important especially when singing.”

My life fell apart when my mother passed away. At that point I was forced to spend a life on the streets. This is where I met someone who loved music the same way I did, and we spent our time trying our best, with the little that we had to continue practicing music and singing.”

ISLAMIC RELIEF SOUTH AFRICA

Top comedians take to the stage A

cademia Auditorium in Lansdowne is set to host a selection of South Africa’s top comedians for two nights later this month.

They have joined forces with Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA) to help 2000 orphans and vulnerable children get ready for the 2018 school year.

A Lekker Comedy Show will run for two nights – Friday 29 and Saturday 30 December – at the auditorium.

Comedian Yaaseen Barnes leads a line-up that includes Loyiso Gola, Joey Rasdien, Rob van Vuuren, Carl Weber, Robby Collins and KG Mogadi.

Barnes says the comedy show aims to raise funds for Islamic Relief’s 2018 Back 2 School campaign.

“I have been working with Islamic Relief for the past two years. They are a family that helps other families and that’s why I love them. There are so many children who need school uniforms, stationery, backpacks, etc. and for me these items are essential. Education is key, and if a child has the necessary educational tools, they will learn and excel [academically and socially],” he says According to UNICEF, there are 3.7 million orphans in South Africa. IRSA has made it a priority to protect them and ensure their welfare.

Statistics South Africa (2010) reports that nearly one fifth of South Africa’s child population has lost one or both parents. These numbers are increasing daily, with minors

facing a life of abject poverty.

IRSA’s orphans’ sponsorship programme aims to alleviate these struggles and remains a core function of our South African operations.

According to IRSA chief executive officer, Yusuf Mohamed, addressing the lack of access to quality primary education is cited as one of the ways to address structural poverty.

“Our educational support project, Back 2 School, caters for the basic needs for our primary and secondary school-going rights holders [beneficiaries] on an annual basis. We are coming together for the sake of these children who are in need of love, care and support. I am appealing to mem-

bers of the public to support this initiative.

We intend to distribute the Back 2 School items in January 2018.”

Mohamed is overwhelmed by the support received from these talented and muchloved comedians.

“The show promises to be highly entertaining ... so we look forward to playing host to this event and call upon the community to book their tickets early to avoid disappointment,” concludes Mohamed.

A woman rapper, hailing from the streets of Mitchell’s Plain, has put her emotions and experiences on display after releasing her first mixtape.

Christal Van Der Vent (20) from Portlands known by her stage name Crissy, started writing when she was 13-years-old.

“I always wrote poems, just always trying to make things rhyme, until I wrote music.

Then a school friend told me I should make something out of my music,” she says.

“When I was in high school my school friend thought I had the potential to make something out of my music.

“Today I have music videos on YouTube, songs on radio, I have appeared on TV numerous times and now have a mixtape available,” she says.

The mixtape, The Practise Run, consists of 14 tracks.

All the songs were written by Crissy.

“I like to inspire my listeners, motivate them, and also want them to relate to something when listening to my music,” she says.

Since leaving school, she has been hard at work making this her full time job.

“Making music is my full time career, I would be in meetings a lot with my management team, I would be in studio recording, doing performances at different events,” she says.

The mixtape features other local artists Ben Caesar, Jarrod De Cock, Damian Roman and Martum.

“This mixtape is one for the people, it’s the type of music you would listen to driving in your car, while at the gym or even chilling with friends.

“There are different types of genres on this mixtape, it is a very relatable mixtape and so far I have only received positive responses from those who already bought the mixtape,” she says.

The mixtape costs R100 and is being sold in hardcopy and can be delivered.

“I would like to thank my management team, and my parents for always supporting my dream and vision,” she says.

Solomons as legende vereer AVRIL FILLIES

n die apartheidsjare het sportlui aan ’n winter- en somersport deelgeneem en nie almal was bevoorreg om in albei sportsoorte hul provinsiale kleure te verwerf nie. Fagmie Solomons van die Bo-Kaap was nie net ’n kranige rugbyspeler nie, maar kon ook goed die wilgerlat inlê en het die Westelike Provinsie in albei verteenwoordig.

Hy is onlangs by ’n gala-geleentheid in die hoofsaal van die College of Cape Town, voorheen die Hewat-opleidingskollege, in Athlone vereer. Die geleentheid is bygewoon deur spelers wat saam of teen hom in sy speeldae op die rugby- of krieketveld gedraf het. Hy was die voorlaaste kaptein van die destydse Suid-Afrikaanse Rugbyunie (Saru) wat onder die vaandel van Sacos, die Suid-Afrikaanse Raad oor Sport, rugby gespeel het, voordat hy die leisels aan Allister Coetzee, die huidige Bok-breier, oorhandig het.

Shamil Jassiem van die Bo-Kaap en Jamiel Alexander van Kensington het onderskeidelik in krieket en rugby gesien hoe die jong Fagmie se sportloopbaan by die krieketklub Ottomans in die Kaap en die rugbyklub Young Stars in Kensington gestalte kry.

“Ek was destyds die president van Young Stars toe hy sy junior en senior rugby by die klub begin het. Fluffy [soos hy onder sportlui bekend is] was ’n losskakel en skrumskakel en hy het die vermoë gehad om die spelers rondom hom, goed te laat lyk, want hy was ’n voetballer. Hy het hande, voete en ’n rugbybrein gehad, wie se gelyke ek nog nie weer in Suid-Afrika gesien het nie. As ek hom moet vergelyk met iemand wat oor dieselfde eienskappe as hy beskik het, sal dit Dan Carter, die Nieu-Seelandse losskakel wees, maar hy staan tweede in die ry agter Fagmie,” het Alexander gesê.

“Fagmie het soos ons dit in streekstaal noem, albei voete gehad, met ander woorde hy

Sy krieketloopbaan was egter nie minder glansryk nie, en volgens Jassiem was hy ’n “stylish” krieketspeler. “Fagmie het vir Ottomans in die toporde (1 tot 3) vanaf junior tot senior vlak gekolf. Hy was ’n natuurlike

talent en allrounder in krieket en rugby.

Beresford Williams, president van WPKrieketunie en ’n voormalige spanmaat en teenstander, het Fagmie as ’n uitstekende krieketspeler en ambassadeur van albei sportsoorte beskryf. “In die verlede is ons op grond van ons ras en geloof verdeel en het ons op talle geleenthede om ons land te verteenwoordig, uitgemis. Fagmie sou in albei sportsoorte SA met trots kon verteenwoordig, maar hy is nie die kans gegun om dit te doen nie, weens apartheid. Hy was nie net ’n uitstaande sportman nie, maar het ook ’n hart van goud gehad. As ek hom moet beskryf, sal dit in drie woorde wees, naamlik: vasberade, toegewyd en gedissiplineerd,” het Williams gesê.

“Groenpunt-baan was sy tuisveld in krieket en hy was vir al die kannetjies in die Bokaap en die res van die WP ’n rolmodel, want hy het leierskapvaardighede en leierseienskappe gehad. Op die rugbyveld het hy WP drie keer in die eindstryd om die SA Beker verteenwoordig, waarvan hy twee keer as kaptein gewen het. In 1979 het hy teen Kwaru, met Cheeky Watson in sy geledere, die SA Bekereindstryd verloor, maar die beker in 1985 en 1986 gewen. In 1987 was hy die kaptein van die Saru-span wat in Namibië gespeel het en het in 1989 sy stewels opgehang,” het Williams gesê.

Van 1979 tot 1989 het hy vier wedstryde vir Saru gespeel, en was kaptein van die WP Rugbyunie in 1980 en City and Suburban in 1983.

Kids treated to Christmas party at Vygieskraal Hewat Athletic Club members swapped their running gear for aprons as they hosted 60 youngsters from the Vygieskraal informal settlement at a Christmas party held at the Central Hockey Club on Monday evening.

The event was the culmination of their outreach programme where they coach the youngsters on a weekly basis at the Vygieskraal Stadium in basic techniques of track and field athletics.

Anthony Liederman, vice-chairperson of the club based in Athlone, is confident they have struck the right note with the programme.

“In September, we started focusing on developing the athletic skills of the kids between the ages of eight and 14.

“We had over 200 kids at our first session, but we had to scale the numbers

down to make it more manageable for the coaches. Two weeks ago we hosted educational programmes for them, highlighting personal hygiene for girls and speaking to the boys about anti-bullying, so we are looking at a holistic approach for them,” he said.

The programme has already delivered a rough diamond on the track, with 14year-old Shane Sass showing promise in the sprint events.

“I love what the club is doing for us and I regard Wayde van Niekerk as my role model,” says Sass.

The evening ended with each child receiving a specially wrapped Christmas gift from the coaches and their very own training sweater to be worn when the programme commences on Monday 5 February.

estridge Yankees inflicted another defeat on their hosts, beating VOB Macaws by 14-8 at Chukker Road in Kenwyn on Saturday.

This was VOB’s third consecutive loss after being on a seven-game winning streak.

Yankees came from a 4-1 deficit to score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and a further seven in the last three innings to complete a dominant performance.

Yankees player/coach, Luwayne du Plessis, took the new ball and threw eight innings.

Jayson Ripepi threw the last inning. Yankees also registered two double plays.

VOB started with Michael Scritten who was replaced by Kieran Moore after five innings. Moore was then replaced by Josh Rich for the last two innings.

Yankees recorded 16 hits compared to VOB’s 10.

Both teams made three errors.

Bellville Tygers remained unbeaten and two points clear of nearest rivals Bothasig Knights at the festive break.

On Saturday five runs on two outs in the eighth inning helped Tygers secure a 9-5 victory over Athlone A’s.

In a closely contested game against Bothasig, Tygers held a slender 4-3 going into the eighth inning.

They scored their five runs from two hits, one walk and three errors.

Kevin Townsend pitched well for Tygers, throwing eight innings, conceding three runs from eight hits and four walks. He was replaced by Jonathan Phillips who conceded two runs in the last innings.
