ith three decades of experience under his belt, the new cop in the top seat at Philippi police station is ready to tackle crime. Col Jacobus Fredericks took reins as acting station commander in September following the retirement of his predecessor, Col Dennis Abels, in August. “I am almost 33 years in the service now
and becoming a policeman was always my dream,” says Fredericks. The Philippi police station precinct covers Hanover Park, the Philippi Horticultural area (farms), Schaapkraal (bordering Grassy Park, Strandfontein and Mitchell’s Plain), Isiqalo informal settlement, Newfields, Pinathi Estate, Induland Industrial, Highlands Estate and Springfield Industrial area. Fredericks says his main objective is to work hand in hand with the community to make a difference. He has served as the acting station com-
mander at Ravensmead police station from June to November 2017 before being promoted to the rank of Colonel in 2018. His most recent appointment was as Vispol (visible policing) head at the Mitchell’s Plain police station for the past two years. Fredericks admits some challenges exist, but his aim is to continually boost officer morale and improve community involvement in crime prevention. “Improving of service delivery to the community and engagement with other stakeholders (is of importance). (I want) to give my utmost best,” he says.
Fredericks is calling on all residents to come forward and assist the police in fulfilling their mandate. “Come forward with any information regarding crime and illegal activities,” he urges the community. “(Also) report any corruption of any police officer stationed at the police station.” Fredericks says he will maintain an open door policy for resident who would like to lay a complaint. He calls on residents who would like offer information towards service delivery improvements to come forward.
