rom singing at his crèche’s graduation concert to performing on the Maak My Famous stage, Daylin Sass is making his dreams a reality from the streets of Hanover Park. Sass is currently in the Top 5 of Maak My Famous season 2, a talent competition which airs on kykNET. The winner will walk away with R100 000 in cash, a performance management contract and a new car, among other prizes. Growing up admiring his sister was what developed his love for performing from a young age. “I performed at my crèche graduation concert for the very first time when I was four or five years old. I always sang in church choirs and that’s where my love for music grew. I always watched my older sister sing and I wanted to be like her,” says Sass. The 22-year-old has since studied at the Cape Music Institute in Athlone and graduated with a distinction in Ensemble Practice from the London College Of Music. His genres of choice are classical and pop. “That’s where I started. Josh Groban was my go-to for every single performance I did. I tapped into so much more genres (since then), making me the artist that I am today.” Maak My Famous was created by Emo Adams and is described as “a talent competition like no other”. With 8 000 entries over four categories – singers (men), singers (women), groups and rap, and speciality – Sass and his fellow Top 5 have beat out more than 40 other finalists. With Covid-19 throwing a spanner in the works, the usual show format needed to be revamped. In season 1 and at the beginning of season 2, a live audience could save their favourite or boot a contestant off the stage. Now this power lies with at-home viewers who can vote during the live show. Sass says when he entered, he didn’t expect to make it this far in the competition. “I was supposed to enter last season, but I was between jobs at the time and I gave up on that idea. I was begged by my supporters to enter because they felt it was my time. I sent my audition tape on the deadline date. I didn’t realise that I’d make it this far because I didn’t put my heart on it,” he says. His journey could have ended at the Top 20 round when each contestant was offered R20 000 to walk away. “Getting offered money on the one side – and you’re basically just surviving – and an oppor-

tunity to build your career on the other is not easy. I thought about everything in that few seconds and I really wanted to take the opportunity, no matter my circumstances, because I worked very hard to be where I am right now. I’m living with my mom, worked three call centre jobs to support her as well, but I needed to make a decision for me, to make me happy too,” he says. A decision which he does not regret. “I’ve grown so much on Maak My Famous. Looking back to my performances from Top 48 to Top 7, all I see is growth in my performances and comfortability on stage. My best performance thus far would be my Top 7 performance of Craig Lucas’s Smother. There were so much fire and passion throughout the performance,” he says. Growing up on the Cape Flats is not easy, but Sass hopes to use his time on stage to inspire others to step up and make a difference. “I mentioned just before my performance in the Top 8 that, no matter your circumstances, you can get out of it by working hard. Keep fighting for your dreams because there’s always a better place ‘somewhere over the rainbow’,” he says. He hopes to expose his community to the arts. “I would like to open a school for arts or even just have an after-school programme for arts so that I can get all the kids off the street and not falling into the trap of gangsterism and drugs,” he says. The Maak My Famous stage has already helped Sass gain a strong social media following and he has promised new music after the show ends. In the meantime, his debut single Take It Slow – Daylin Sass ft. Philly is available on all digital platforms. “A lot of people are seeing me for who I am and finally accepting my talent,” he says. “To my loyal supporters, thank you all for your support and love throughout the competition. All of my performances are dedicated to each of you. I love you all so much.” V Follow Daylin’s journey on Maak My Famous, Saturday’s at 20:00 on kykNET.
