tudents who want a career in information technology can now apply for bursaries to study at Lux Mundi Training in Grassy Park, a community college. “The idea of a community college was started, managed and supported by communities from the Cape Flats and sounded like an impossible dream back in 2012. It was an uphill battle to make this dream a reality and in 2014 Lux Mundi Training was accredited with the Media, Information Communication Technologies (MICT) Seta and a few courses were registered at the Seta,” says reverend Rodney van Wyk, the CEO of Lux Mundi Training. The motivation for the college came to Van Wyk, who has served at the Reformed

Church Grassy Park for 36 years. He saw the deterioration on the Cape Flats and decided that something must be done. “My parents’ parents were teachers, and I served as the education representative of the Mitchell’s Plain ministers fraternal during the troubled years of school uprisings in 1984.” Years later church colleagues complained to him about talented young people that could not study further due to financial difficulties. “I also saw statistics that showed a decline in the number of young people from the Cape Flats that enrolled in universities and colleges since 2008. Apart from the campuses at 76 5th Avenue

Grassy Park and 21 Vredendal Street in Portland Mitchell’s Plain, the college has six accredited assessors/facilitators and moderators registered at the MICT Seta. The college focuses on Information Technology, to equip students with qualifications that are more in demand, but also enable students to create their own income. The latest qualifications that were approved by the accreditations body QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) for Lux Mundi Training are FETC: IT Telecommunication Network Operations NQF Level 4 and National Certificate: IT; Systems Support NQF Level 5. These courses are available at a special price of R22 000 and R26 000 respectively. Over the years the college developed partnerships with non-governmental organisa-
