Dance keeps kids safe

A

young dancer from Ottery is on her feet to ensure that children in her community are kept busy with beneficial activities throughout the week.

Tiana Arends, a 25-year-old dance instructor from Isaac Way, says she started her community project “Dance with Purpose” with the aim of steering children away from the gang-infested lifestyle growing within her community.

Her initiative uses the art of dance to promote holistic wellbeing, healthy lifestyle choices and empowerment.

“Many of these children look up to gangsters as their role models and sooner or later they end up joining these gangs themselves.

Dance with Purpose was my dream project started a few years ago, specifically with the aim of steering them away from this lifestyle,” says Arends.

“I host my programmes, which include dancing and educational activities, at a little centre situated in the heart of where it all occurs. The flats surrounding the centre are packed with gangs from different groups, often making it difficult for kids to walk in the area. But when children come to the centre it’s a whole new world for them and they enjoy each and every bit of it.”

passion, but she was only recently able to fulfil her dance dreams after dropping out of university.

“When I was at school, performing arts were not an option at the time. My parents didn’t have the money for extra dance classes, so I just left it. I went to study journalism years later but my parents could no longer afford the fees and I was forced to drop out.

This was when I met a group of dancers who encouraged me join them,” she explains.

“I got inspired at this stage and started entering dance competitions and various community events. Soon after, I found myself starting my own group with my friends, who together helped to make this project a reality, basically with the aim of accommodating kids whose parents can’t afford dance classes. Today I offer my services to them free of charge so they can fulfil their dreams.”

She says the aim of her group is to train as many young people as possible to become extraordinary dancers by having multiple sustainable dance training programmes that allow the dancers to reach their full potential in life and perhaps go on to become professional dancers, qualified dance teachers and choreographers.

Arends’s other achievements since establishing Dance with Purpose include hosting the Ward 66 Talent Show in partnership with the City of Cape Town.

Safe haven patient death queried

Constantia family say they are disappointed in police for “trying to sweep [a relative’s] murder case under the carpet”.

Herman de Wet, a 55-year-old patient at Grassy Park Fisher Centre, was killed inside his bedroom in December last year.

De Wet was a resident patient at the enclosed home for the mentally and physically challenged for the past eight years.

According to his brother, Richard de Wet, he was “viciously attacked” by a 36-year-old patient inside his locked room with no supervision at hand on Wednesday 6 December.

He sustained a massive head injury and lost consciousness. He was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital where he remained on life support for more than a week. The man finally succumbed to his injuries on Saturday 16 December.

Fayrooz Johnson from Willow Way says she is in the final stages of her budget to accommodate all participants on set. The drama, which is set to be filmed in Bo-Kaap, will look into various religions trying to find their common humanity. The drama tells the story of a young Muslim boy who goes to Islamic classes without his religious headwear. His teacher denies him entry into the classroom unless he returns with his kufiya. “The angry boy goes home and seeks answers from his parents as to why he cannot go to school without the kufiya. The parents, not knowing what to say, call on the imaam, who says he is too busy to answer the question,” she explains.

“The imaam then calls on a rabbi to ask

why Jews wear the yarmulke. He too cannot explain and calls on a bishop to ask about Christian headgear. And so the drama continues, with the boy discovering the true meaning of each religious tradition. On his journey he discovers that many children are being killed in the Middle East, particularly in Palestine, for wearing the kufiya.”

Johnson says the drama is set to feature various religious sites in the city, including churches, mosques and synagogues. “It’s a beautiful story, also looking at how a child in Palestine walks in parallel with a child of South Africa. In the discovery made along the way, Christians, Jews and Muslims all discover the true meaning under the hats they wear,” she says. “This story was written a very long time ago and I am finally able to put it out there with the hopes of using it as a way forward to educate the public. I am calling on schools and interested individuals, including camera operators and actors, to come forward in this regard.”

Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith of Grassy Park Police Station confirms that a case of murder is currently under investigation.

“The suspect in the case has been a patient at Valkenberg Hospital ever since the murder happened. The detective is awaiting the autopsy result to establish the cause of death,” she says.

Meanwhile, Thomas Blake, the chairperson of the centre, told People’s Post to make direct contact with the parties investigating the case.

“We have already opened up ourselves and made direct contact by giving statements to both the Department of Health and the police who are doing further investigations, and we herewith wish to refrain from any further statements in this regard.”

Cape Town Art Fair plans sixth year The sixth edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF) will take place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

This time they have added a new section called Solo. This section is said to be aimed at focusing on the production of female artists, offering different perspectives of the widespread socio-political issues faced by women in both the public and private spheres, while also highlighting their contributions.

It is reported that for this edition, ICT-

AF has worked closely with a number of local and international galleries that support the artistic practices of emerging and established artists from around the world.

Local artist Lhola Amira from Woodstock is among many artists from around the world who will be showcasing their work at the fair.

The internationally recognised Nontobeko Ntombela will curate the fair alongside local curator, Tumelo Mosaka.

hat does a cake, a dress and a minister have in common? Well a wedding of course.

And this was no different, except different in everyway. With an aunt giving their niece away to marry their godmother, it became a bit complicated, but it was all in the name of fun. The group of women from the yet to be named grocery club hosted a weddingthemed party at the Westridge Gardens on Saturday.

It is a monthly initiative with a variety of themes. Last year, the women hosted month-

ly parties based on countries, with the native attire and cuisine on offer for the day.

Sunita Clayton, chairperson of the club, says the theme was chosen by one of the women.

“The ages of women in the club range from late 20s to early 70s. Every month we have themed parties and it was one of the ladies suggestions that we do a wedding. We chose Westridge Gardens with streetwise two’s [as our wedding lunch] and it is all in the name of fun,” she says.

Each woman was assigned a character to play. The event was complete with a wedding cake and cake topper, garden reception, flowers, lapel pins and even a bride kitted

The club is made up of friends and family from Mitchell’s Plain, Primrose Park, Athlone, Zeekoevlei, Goodwood and Monta Vista.

Founder Chantal Titus says the club has been around for many years and it is a breakaway for the mothers.

“As moms we are very busy and this is a social gathering and opportunity for us to have ‘me time’,” she says.

The group was created in the name of savings and the women share savings tips, buy and sell meat stamps, cooldrink stamps, and vouchers that can be used by the end of the year.

Cycle to raise funds

M

embers of Zip Zap Academy are calling on the public to support their upcoming fundraiser in aid of children living in underprivileged areas across the city.

Zip Zap co-founder, Laurence Esteve, says the non-profit organisation’s cycling fundraiser at this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour will benefit 2000 children from various communities including Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Mitchell’s Plain, among others.

The Zip Zap cycling team aims to accomplish their R100 000 goal through the help of

“We work with children from different communities and provide them with the resources to develop skills through the medium of circus arts, which will develop them as young leaders, contributing citizens and ambassadors for South Africa, and make them eminently employable,” she says.

Esteve says the school was established in 1992 and now has two homes: the Zip Zap Academy in Salt River and the Zip Zap Dome in the Cape Town City Centre.

“Zip Zap has a total of nine programmes, including four youth programmes, four out-

with kids by showing them a new meaning to life through the art of circus. This has kept my children off the streets and developed them into respectable and goal-driven individuals.”

Zip Zap continues to work with a diverse community of children by inspiring and helping them to build a new culture of peaceful coexistence in the country. Let’s make every drop count I sat down in a coffee shop last week where my coffee and lunch were served in a paper cup and plate – just a little bit of effort from their side to save water on not having to wash dishes.

Amid all the political mud-slinging and panic about Day Zero, it was nice to see how small effort by one restaurant can ultimately save thousands of litres of water, especially if other restaurants would follow suit – and I’ve heard of many others that already have.

At my children’s school, the learners are encouraged to attend school in their sports clothes on days they have practice after school. And while one or two less uniforms in your load of laundry seems like a drop

in the ocean, one needs keep the bigger picture – the amount of children in the school – in mind.

At the same time waterless hand sanitiser has become almost as scarce as water on the shelves. If you take into account that the Global Hygiene Council advises you wash your hands at least six times a day, this is another small effort that can go a long way.

While water is flying off the shelves faster than the trucks can offload it, as Capetonians have gone into panic over Day Zero, many industries that rely heavily on water to keep their businesses afloat are also dreading the day taps run dry. As my hairdresser put it (and yes, they have already

Day Zero volunteer platform launched Volunteers able to donate time or goods to assist officials tasked with managing the Cape water crisis can pledge their support online.

The initiative is hosted by the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA), a registered non-profit organisation established in 1987.

WISA aims to support water sector professionals.

The platform is a simple tool that allows volunteers to submit their contact and donation details.

WISA will collate the information and use its existing communication channels within the water sector to share relevant details with official task teams deployed by national and local government.

Board game aims to teach water saving AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem

s Day Zero draws closer, locals within various communities are doing all they can to save as much water as possible.

Grassy Park resident Fayrooz Johnson says she has been saving water and preparing for Day Zero for many years. This water warrior, who shares water-saving tips with her community daily, has now also introduced the latest addition to her Play It Safe board game collection, titled #DayZero.

People’s Post first spoke to Johnson last year when she released her two educational board games promoting child safety at various schools across the City (“Safety is child’s play”, People’s Post, 19 December 2017 ). She says that both adults and children are able to use her new board game as an educational and practical method to save water within the family household.

“Day Zero is where I was in the 1980s. We were out of water and I didn’t like the water quality on the Cape Flats. I then decided to catch rainwater. I would collect it in big barrels and my mother would say I was crazy for doing this. I lived off rainwater in BoKaap at the time, and seeing all this coming to hand makes me realise that we have been waiting for this day to arrive for quite some time. There has been a lot of aggression on the issue for the past few years because of fear that water is going to run out. I have witnessed this during water-shedding workshops and public meetings. But I have a different take on this. We need to first learn to know and understand the spirituality and the science of water, and how to save and augment the water cycle. This is all part of the game.”

She says that after learning how to save water through the game, families would then need to start augmenting this knowledge. “One example is digging up paving and replacing it with pebbles, thus creating a rechargeable zone, as explained in the game. If rain comes down it will now go into

the aquifer. If we continue to have all the paved areas, rain will run away in storm channels and the ocean, not benefiting us properly,” she says.

“You can go outside and make a borehole and you will be able to be a part of that water cycle, but you can’t do it if you are not aware of it. We are also killing the soil at the same time by drying up the aquifer with paving.

If we are going to be dependent on boreholes we must see to it that we remove the paving and we must educate ourselves on it.”

Past and current historical events and campaigns also form part of the game.

“There is also cultural information in the game like how Bushmen and many others survived and saved water back then. It was very hard for them but it was their survival,” says Johnston.

“The game comes with plant seeds, as well as passes to attend educational campaigns as a reward system. Kids will be able to nurture a plant to see how it grows and surviv-

es. The main aim of this game is also for us to have perspective to where we are with this issue – we are zooming out on this whole scenario. We also need to keep in mind that companies, as mentioned in the game, are taking our precious water and mixing alcohol with it, making people sick and alcoholics. This angers me ...”

She says locals need to thank their Creator for what water really is and once communities have understood this, they will start respecting it. “People will be more protective over water once they realise how treasured it is. If water doesn’t give you a feeling of belonging, nothing else will. If water is gone then the universe is gone and if people know this they will not take it for granted anymore,” she explains.

Meanwhile Johnston says she is still using the same water she collected during last July’s rainstorm.

Programmers to find water solutions Computer programmers and relevant experts will join hands to try and find solutions to save the City from Day Zero.

The two-day hackathon Startupbootcamp (SBC) Cape Town, titled H2O (Hack Two Day Zero), is set to take place at Mowbray Golf Park on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 February.

It will be held in partnership with the RCS Group. Participants will have two days to pitch their ideas, form teams and create prototypes under the guidance of corporate sponsors. It is said that anyone who comes up with a winning tech-based idea or solution to solve the problems being caused by the water crisis will receive assistance

through the hackathon. There is also a prize to be won.

Paul Nel, chief partnership officer and CFO of Startupbootcamp Cape Town, says: “By creating an environment to collectively pool ideas together, we believe this hackathon can ensure that both short-term and long-term solutions can be designed to deal with the crisis. We encourage everyone who has a desire to make an impact to join. By bringing ideas and skills together, we can make a difference.” According to the statement, the event will host executives from Old Mutual, Nedbank, RCS, Woolworths Financial Services and PwC to engage with

entrepreneurs, students, concerned citizens and local government.

Regan Adams, CEO of the RCS Group, says: “We are in the midst of a water crisis in the Western Cape and with the implications of Day Zero fast approaching there will be widespread impacts. The onus is not only on the individual to conserve water, but as corporates we have a responsibility to collectively apply our minds to this challenge facing the society in which we operate. Hosting a hackathon purely focusing on the water crisis is the perfect opportunity for RCS to show both support and desire to address this issue.”

‘Biggest’ show heads to city STEHAN SCHOEMAN

t is being dubbed the biggest bodybuilding and fitness development show South Africa has ever seen and not for nothing, with free tan-free division entry and free photography on Saturday 3 March.

The show is the brainchild of Physical Culture Association (PCA) South Africa president, Kevin Schwartz from Bellville.

“This show is aimed at first timers who’ve never competed and who have not placed in the top three at any show no matter which federation they competed in,” says Schwartz.

The show, which will take place at the Durbanville High School auditorium, aims to attract new talent and groom the champions of the future.

The show will cater for juniors, different ladies’ beach bikini and fitness divisions, as well as the men’s beach model, physique muscle model, classic bodybuilding and various weight divisions for the senior bodybuilding line-ups.

Damian Schechter from Sea Point is one

of the most well-known faces in the industry and the newly appointed PCA Western Province chairperson.

“Having the vote of confidence from my PCA WP team, to work with and lead the brand within the province, is honestly one of my greatest career achievements and I couldn’t be any more excited for this opportunity,” says Schechter.

“I started getting involved in bodybuilding and fitness in late 2013 as an athlete. Taking it a step further and becoming a judge soon after was one of the highest accolades of my career. What an absolute privilege it is to be trusted to place, nominate and reward athletes, credibly, for their hard work and support. Skip another year or two and here I am. Honestly, I couldn’t be any more grateful and humbled.

“The development show is going to rock South Africa’s socks off! What an exciting time to be a part of South African bodybuilding and fitness culture,” he says.

“The show will be something new, fresh, interactive and exciting. What makes this a special show is that it has been specifically

designed for first timers and novices.

“It is known that competing in competitions can be costly, and for many of the athletes it is very hard to fund the preparations.

Our athletes will experience free tan-free division entry (one only) and free photography. This initiative is a first in the South African market and we hope that many athletes will flourish through the initiative to grow the sport.

Judging by the calibre of previous PCA WP events, we sure are in for a great experience with this one. South Africa has given birth to some of the world’s greatest athletes, from all over the country, and word on the street for this year is that they are all coming out in full force,” says Schechter.

Cape Town is known for hosting some of the very best shows in the country like the Conrad Nagel Xtreme Classic (24 March), Battle of the Titans VI (23 June) and MS Diva Extravaganza (28 July), all held at the Durbanville High School auditorium.

ocal rugby teams seem to be ready for the start of their season as they impressively displayed their early-season form with numerous tries being scored at the Tens inaugural tournament held at Vygieskraal on Saturday 3 February.

Six local teams participated in a Hamediehs Tens rugby tournament, with Primrose Club from Claremont taking the shine.

The team beat Collegians 12-5 in the final inaugural trophy, defeating teams such as Hamediehs, Vineyards, Collegians, Primroses, Surrey Estate and Manenberg. This competition sees teams of 10 members par-

Hamediehs chairperson Ashraf Joseph says: “As a club we are focusing on the community aspect of the competition, thus we are calling it the Community Tens Cup, to revive the spirit among the clubs competing in the tournament.”

He says they also want to claim back their place in WP rugby as clubs, and in an attempt to achieve this, his team has appointed well-known local coach, Taariq van der Ross, as the head coach for this year’s season.

Pirates managed to score one run in the third inning and two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and another one in the eighth inning to complete the come-from-behind victory. Kieran Clacket threw all nine innings for Pirates.

Brad de Waal (2/5), Daryn Chalmers (3/5), Jared Uys (2/5), Garth Uys (2/4) and Justin Smith (2/3) all hit well for Pirates.

This is only Pirates’ third win after beating Athlone A’s and Westridge Yankees earlier in the season.

Thistle, despite out-hitting Grassy Park Crusaders, went down 12-6 in Grassy Park.

It was the nine walks and eight errors that hurt Thistle in the end. They recorded 10 hits compared to Crusaders’ seven.

Top hitters for Thistle were Spencer Diedericks (2/4), with Brent Frans (2/3) and Warren Adams (2/5) doing well for Crusaders. Oudshoorn-born Revan Plaatjies pitched all nine innings for Thistle. He conceded seven hits, 12 runs, nine walks while striking out five hitters.
