afety structures in the Grassy Park policing precinct have joined hands to launch a sanitary pad drive that will eventually benefit all 24 schools in the area. Initiated by New Horizon Neighbourhood Watch and Grassy Park community policing forum (CPF) treasurer Saadiqah Ganief, the initiative is backed by a partnership between the CPF, Grassy Park police, New Horizon Neighbourhood Watch, Grassy Park Precinct neighbourhood watches and the Grassy Park Empowerment Forum. “During the lockdown period, we saw the need to assist with necessities other than feeding. We focused on our ladies in aid of Women’s Month and the gender-based violence sadly occurring oh so often. Working together, we collected sanitary toiletries for two months beginning in July. We see the

need for sanitary toiletries as it’s a basic necessity but an expensive one. Menstruation stigma and taboos are stereotypes that are still very vocal within our communities,” says Ganief. The drive saw the collection of soap, sanitary towels and other toiletries to put together emergency packs and care packs. The first emergency packs were distributed on Monday 31 August when representatives visited Fairmount, Grassdale and Grassy Park high schools – the visits also marked the launch of the initiative. Ganief says the school emergency packs consist of three packs of jumbo pads. A total of 10 emergency packs are given to the high schools with five emergency packs given to primary schools. Ganief says other community organisations are also benefiting. “Our theme is to stop period poverty. Menstruation is not a choice and advocating for sanitary towel dispensers should be the new norm. Female hygiene rights are
very important,” says Ganief. Other than the school emergency packs, care packs –consisting of sanitary towels, a facecloth and a bar of soap – were given to the Grassy Park police station Victim Support Unit and active community organisations. Sanitary bulk packs, containing six packets of pads and 20 tampons, were also provided to the police station. Emergency packs distributed to the neighbourhood watches consist of three bulk pads and 10 tampons per structure. “We wanted to ensure that each of the 24 schools in the precinct benefits. Support organisations for women and active community structures within the precinct were chosen,” says Ganief. Station Commander Col Dawood Laing and his team were at the event, together with CPF chair Melvin Jonkers, deputy chair Nicole Jacobus and Ganief who addressed the schools. Laing says to People’s Post: “(The Grassy

Park police) is there to show that we are not the enemy of the youth. We want to instil a relationship between the police and the community. We know how important the youth is. We know that so many kids do hate what is natural to all women.” Laing says the police will remain closer to the communities they serve. “We know our communities are suffering financially and this is just a small contribution from our side to show we do care. When the CPF asked (us) to get involved, we grabbed at the opportunity to help as we know the struggles of the youth, especially during this time of Covid-19 (and) the new normal.” The CPF plans to continue the drive up to the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign on 25 November. Residents are urged to donate soap, facecloths, sanitary towels or tampons.
