he clearing of the bush in New Horizon has assisted crime fighters in keeping crime at bay. This after neighbourhood watch volunteers took it upon themselves to trim and maintain a bushy area on an open piece of land on the corners of Lark and Oystercatcher roads. This area has been problematic for some time now, with the thick vegetation aiding in early morning robberies. It has also been a meeting place to use drugs and a haven for homeless people who sleep there, residents say. “The bushy area has always presented a problem as, prior to the neighbourhood watch cutting it down, the residents residing that side had cut it down themselves,” says New Horizon Neighbourhood Watch treasurer, Saadiqah Ganief.
Residents have experienced an increase in burglaries, which they say is linked to the bushy area. “The norm in New Horizon, Pelican Park, is for criminals to hide in bushes, awaiting an opportunity to break in. “The bush was fenced with barbed wire but it became so overgrown and dangerous that something urgently needed to be done. With time, the barbed wire was broken down, which made it easier for those prone to committing crime to hide inside of it,” continues Ganief. This is not a unique site. Several other bushy areas dot New Horizon, with the biggest problem being illegal dumping on these unoccupied and overgrown plots. “The neighbourhood watch has taken it upon ourselves to each month tackle a spot in the community that needs cleaning, whether it means cutting down overgrown bushes or picking up the dumping and taking the bags of dirt to the skip in Strandfontein,” she says. “We will no longer wait for something to

dumping. A release fee will be charged, over-and-above the fine issued for dumping. What prompted the action was a recent patrol where three people were found taking drugs in the bush at 02:00. “We do not want to have a case – God forbid – where a child or young lady ends up being raped because no one can see nor hear what happens inside of that bush. Hence why we cut it down. We want to create a safer community in all aspects. Therefore, we strive to continue to assist, continue to serve and uplift our community,” says Ganief. “The area is (now) much safer because at first one could see absolutely nothing because of how high and thick the bush had grown. At this moment, the field is clear so it’s quick to spot when illicit activity is taking place and the residents feel at ease knowing it is cut down. “When walking to the clinic or past the field, they don’t need to worry if someone is waiting inside.”

be done but be proactive and do something to contribute to the solution. If it means clearing up the same spot numerous times, this is our community, our environment and health and safety is an important priority always.” Illegal dumping on parcels of vacant land is a City-wide problem. In a recent statement, Cape Town mayor Dan Plato said there were close to 3 000 dumping hotspots in the city. “Efforts to clear illegal dumping are under way throughout the year, city-wide. With around 2 900 dumping hotspots, it is simply not possible to visit the same location each day. The only way in which a meaningful change can happen is for residents and the City to work together. We all deserve to live and work in clean, tidy environments,” he said. Illegal dumping is harmful and against the law. Penalties for illegal dumping can be in excess of R20 000, including a R5 000 fine issued for dumping, as well as the confiscation of the vehicle used in illegal
