leanliness and hygiene protocols have been key in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. And this has made linen management services a chief priority at all Covid-19 hospitals. At Groote Schuur Hospital, one of the flagship Covid-19 facilities in the Western Cape, Jacques Vosloo of Lotus River is charged with keeping the ball rolling in this department. The 53-year-old father of two is the principal linen supervisor at Groote Schuur. During the national lockdown, his already important job became even more vital. Vosloo – who has worked at the hospital for four years – and his team must ensure linen arrives in hospital areas on time. “We need to ensure that the correct quantities are distributed. Different areas have different needs. Since Covid-19, the needs in areas have changed. We now have Covid wards which all need personal protective equipment (PPE). “There has been an increase of 70% in linen usage in the hospital. When patients move in-

to different areas or even for an X-ray, they need new linen. Some patients would use about three sets of linen per day. The same quantity can apply to staff because they move between wards and would need new PPE in another area,” he says. Vosloo started his career in health at a primary health community day centre (CDC). “At the CDC, I saw the need for good, clean linen. Then a post in linen management at Groote Schuur Hospital came along. I applied and got the post,” says Vosloo. “I saw the importance of linen in the service we render to the community. A doctor must have clean linen in the consultation room before seeing the patient and, apart from everything, a patient feels good when he or she puts their head down in a bed with clean linen so that the healing process is speedy and positive. “It is also rewarding (to receive) the feedback from patients when they leave the hospital and fill in the survey form about how their stay was. They say the linen was good and clean.” Being able to make a difference and the support and camaraderie among the staff are what keeps Vosloo motivated. “Nothing can be a success without team-
work; from the bottom to the top, this linen team is the best. At the start, I had to work through the difficulty to understand Covid-19. I lost a close friend and a relative (due) to Covid-19,” he says. Vosloo says being part of decision making assisted in the smooth process for linen management at the hospital during this time. Vosloo was recognised as part of the health department’s appreciation Wednesday campaign which seeks to acknowledge unsung heroes in the hospitals fighting on the front lines. “The feeling was tremendous and I applaud all – from the moment that the dirty linen gets collected in the wards, sorted in the linen bank soil area and sent off to the laundry, then returning to the hospital to be counted and redistributed back to the wards. It is rewarding to see a team working to satisfy the public,” says Vosloo. Alaric Jacobs, a spokesperson for the health department, says Groote Schuur hospital has a 975-bed capacity. “We were able to accommodate in terms of what the needs were so that we can still cater for all our patients,” says Jacobs. “On average we have 4 200 inpatients per month (serving)

the South and Metro West (areas).” Groote Schuur, along with Tygerberg Hospital, has been at the forefront of the Western Cape government’s Covid-19 strategy. On Monday 8 June, the Covid-19 testing centre was opened at Groote Schuur which provides a space where patients can be screened and tested separately from those who do not require testing. As the Covid-19 infection numbers have decreased significantly in the Western Cape, Jacobs confirms the hospital is also seeing fewer patients in its Covid-19 ward. According to the most recent statistics released on Sunday 13 September, in the Western Cape there are 107 687 confirmed cases with 100 715 recoveries, 4058 deaths and 2914 active cases. In the Metro subdistricts serviced by the hospital, there are 9 692 confirmed cases in the Southern district and 9 429 cases in the Western subdistrict. Vosloo says it is important to understand that not everyone can afford a mask, but encourages everyone to keep safe. “It is important that we don’t just say stay safe, we need to practise it and have faith in everything that we do. Faith is what will carry us through this period.”
