he Zeekoevlei Tennis Club, established in the late 1970s, is described as being in a phase of active revival by its newly appointed executive committee. “Tennis isn’t soccer – and even though those who play it, love it, it’s not as popular as something like soccer. So most tennis clubs are fairly small but we probably have more members now than we have had in a long time,” says Emma Oliver, the club’s secretary. “When I joined last year, we had approximately 12 to 15 people – half of whom were active. We’ve now grown to 47, based on the number of cards I’ve issued recently,” says Wayne du Plessis, the chair at the club. Olivier believes the national lockdown fa-

cilitated the growth in numbers. “People walked down here and down Peninsula Road (for exercise during lockdown) and people saw the tennis courts; so, in a way, lockdown helped us. It was partly because people were walking past but also partly because people’s sporting activity changed,” she says. With tennis being one of the few sports that allowed for social distancing, it gained popularity during level three of lockdown. As the club’s numbers grow, however, the exco is looking to tackle some of its challenges. The property leased by the club comprises of three tennis courts, a tennis-court-turnedbasketball-court and a clubhouse. The exco members say the entire premises is in need of repairs. “Two of the courts are in dire need; they’re the original courts. They’re beginning to undulate and break up,” Du Plessis says.

He adds that only one of the three courts has been resurfaced (back in 2013) but even it is in need of repair after moles began to pop through the hard court surface and tunnel below. “When you bounce the ball on that side, you can actually hear the hollow sound underneath. So you’re at risk of falling through there because they create a pathway underneath,” says Du Plessis. The next item on the exco’s agenda is expanding the clubhouse “for the growth we’ve experienced”. Antisocial behaviour which sometimes rears its head at the basketball court has presented the exco with a safety and security challenge. A hole was made in the court’s fence in order for people to gain entry. “There is vandalism by the youth because they think this is a non-functioning club but we are actually a structured club. Because we can’t afford security to look after it 24/7,

this is what has happened. The court was used to play football towards the end of last year and we didn’t want that because there is a field especially for that. So we locked the gate. And, as a result, the youth vandalised the fence to get onto the court and then substance abuse happened. We’ve had that problem ever since.” To engage the youth in constructive activities, Du Plessis says they are looking to repair the holes made in the fence and to establish a basketball club. Before the implementation of lockdown, Pelican Park High School learners used the courts for their tennis league competition and training. In the upcoming year, the club intends to further its development portfolio. Development officer Linda van Reenen of The Cape Town Tennis Association intends to assist on this front.
