HANOVER PARK
UCT alumni empower learners AVRIL FILLIES
T
he Athwood Primary School library in Hanover Park was funded mostly by the University of Cape (UCT) Town Medical School Class of 1993 reunion and private donors. Named after the late dean of the faculty of health sciences at UCT, Professor Bongani Mayosi, the library was launched just over a year ago. “At the school we are privileged to have Christine Adams as the librarian. Every day in her classes she shows that the child in her is still very active. The learners enjoy the library period and when you walk around the school you can hear the laughter and giggles coming from the library,” says Evan Petersen, principal of Athwood. The library is one of three projects administered by the non-profit organisation (NPO) Good Deeds Charity Group. The other two are the refurbished computer lab and multimedia centre at Heideveld Primary School, named the Carol Thomas Computer Lab and launched in May last year, and the Roger Mason Freedom 1994 Library at the York Road Primary School in Lansdowne – also a library and multimedia facility – funded by the UCT Class of 1994 reunion late last year. “The Good Deeds Charity Group unites friends, colleagues and other like-minded individuals who wish to empower underprivileged scholars by giving them access to tools we had and that our kids enjoy. This will allow them to excel at school and make further studies an option,” says Dr Azgher Karjiker, one of the trustees of the organisation. The tools and further studies will better prepare kids for future employment. “Through our good deeds, they will prosper and be able to fend for themselves and their families. The NPO has partnered with Breadline RSA, the Bookery, Cape Winds Construction (project managers), EPC computer supplies and some private donors whose aim is to promote basic education by providing reading material and computers to schools in underprivileged areas,” he says. The NPO is currently building a kitchen to the value of R163 243 at Athwood. The project comprises a prefab structure, ventilation and electrical installation. One of the top retailers pledged to fit out the kitchen. “The computer lab upgrade for Heideveld will cost R88 032 and we are also donating books to the library at the school. The bookery is a managing project on its own. The Med School Class of 1995 reunion will help Vuyani Primary School in Gugulethu during this year. We also cover the ongoing monthly costs of the librarians who staff the libraries. “Should any other classes or friends wish to help fund these initiatives, please email me on drk@drk-ent.com,” Karjiker says.
