ina Cal-lee Rossouw, an Ocean View local, will show off her skills at the Red Bull Shay’ iMoto car spinning competition taking place this weekend. The 24-year-old says seeing her father, Gary, and brother, Riaan, behind the wheel for as long as she can remember inspired her to start her spinning career at the age of 16. “My father used to do drag racing and spinning back in the day, so I grew up around cars,” she says. Having spent so much time watching them on the street, she says she was destined to end up behind the wheel too. “I am quite small, so a lot of people think I’m very young. While some parents might fear for their children’s safety, Rossouw says this isn’t the case in her household. “My mother, Cherildene, and my father are my biggest supporters. My mother is used to it because my father used to spin, and she was always the one sitting next to him with me on her lap.” Rossouw has been based in Pretoria since 2016, working as a diesel mechanic for the South African National Defence Force, but she still finds time to pursue her passion. Growing up in Ocean View, she says life was not always easy. That is why she hopes to be a pioneer in promoting the spinning and drag racing sport in the community. “Because I started spinning there, a lot of kids look up to me and they are inspired by me. I’m a role model. I’m hoping it (spinning) will grow (in Cape Town) after this event. What I want is a future – when everything is going good – I would like to have my own school of spinning and teach people – especially girls – to spin.” She says in Cape Town, the sport is still developing and she hopes to grow it to be inclusive. “When I started, I felt inferior and intimidated by the guys, but I told myself, ‘If you put your mind to something, you can do anything’. And I can even do it better.” At the time of the interview, she was on
