ive days. That is how long it took to clear the debris left on the Dontse Yake and Ibhayi areas of Imizamo Yethu when a fire broke out on Sunday 6 September, destroying hundreds of structures. While the clearing of debris began on Monday 7 September, the City’s Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, says the terrain where the affected structures stood is very steep and rocky, making it difficult to work in. As a result, the debris had to be removed by hand, carried down the mountain and loaded onto trucks which carted it away. “City teams continued to clear the site from debris by hand until the work was completed

on (Friday) 11 September,” says Booi. The City says the delivery of large components of its enhanced fire kits also began on Monday following the completion of the verification of the fire-affected areas. Each fire kit consists of 25 zinc sheets, 14 wooden poles which are fire-treated, three packets of nails, a door, door hinges, a window frame and a window. “We delivered 262 enhanced kits in total. The last 12 enhanced kits were issued on (Saturday) 12 September,” he adds. Booi confirms that the electricity infrastructure in the area where the fire broke out was damaged. “City staff members came out to assess the damaged infrastructure after the fire. The City will ensure this is attended to,” he says. Joanne Chemaly, the founder of Thula Thula Hout Bay, a non-governmental oganisation

which proactively prepares for disaster relief in the area confirms many families have rebuilt their structures and have moved in. However, Chemaly says, it is difficult to rebuild items of worth such as furniture and appliances. She says, for certain residents, this is the third of fourth time they have received support from Thula Thula after having lost everything in previous fires. Chemaly says they have experienced a much higher level of trauma among those affected by the most recent fire. She says having to rebuild their lives again and again has taken its toll on residents. Rob Quintas, the councillor for ward 74, says the City’s informal settlements and electricity departments are still engaged with those affected by the fire. “I’ll engage individuals who have specific needs and queries as they request and ap-

proach me with them,” Quintas adds. According to the City, 263 structures were destroyed and five others were partially damaged in the fire on Sunday 6 September. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The blaze, which broke out in Molokoane Street at 02:18 on Sunday, was doused at 11:48. Booi says there is only one access road through Imizamo Yethu. “Access is very challenging for the City’s emergency and basic services,” Booi says. He asks residents to not to allow the erection of structures without access ways and firebreaks. “Structures are not supposed to be erected less than 1.5m apart to reduce the risk and rate of fire and its spread,” Booi says. V Donations of non-perishable goods and essential personal items for adults and babies may be dropped off at Roeland Street Fire Station, Gardens, or Hout Bay Fire Station, Hout Bay.
