R
esidents living in a small pocket of Claremont can breathe a little easier knowing that a neighbourhood watch group is now active in their area. The newly founded Claremont Watch operates within the borders of Bowwood Road up towards the M3, along the M3 towards Paradise Circle, down Protea Road towards the Main Road and along the Main Road back to Bowwood Road. Toni Snow, a resident and the spokesperson for Claremont Watch, says the areas surrounding these borders have had

neighbourhood watch groups running successfully for many years, however, their section of Claremont was not covered by any watch group – until recently, that is. Snow says, spurred on by a rise in crime in their area, a group of concerned residents got together late last year to discuss the way forward for community safety. “Preparations began early this year but were delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. As lockdown restrictions were eased, we were able to roll up our sleeves and (began) the development process,” she explains. Snow shares that a constitution, a code of conduct, and terms and conditions have been formulated and submitted to the department
of community safety (DOCS) for accreditation. “We have been informed it is being processed and should be completed by mid-November,” she adds. According to Snow, the most prevalent crime in the area is theft out of motor vehicles with a few house break-ins and muggings also having been reported. Taking note of the hotspots, Snow says the watch group has increased patrols in these roads. She says the group is fortunate to have Compass Towing on board when it comes to patrolling the area. “They are on our Claremont Watch patrollers WhatsApp group and make every effort to attend to safety concerns in the area,” Snow says.

Claremont Watch is also in the process of developing partnerships with local security service providers such as Fidelity ADT and Princeton. Both providers are members of the watch’s WhatsApp groups. In time to come, the Claremont Watch aims to have a designated vehicle that focuses solely on the area within its borders. “We have also had conversations with and the support of the surrounding watch groups. These relationships will be developed further in the coming months,” she adds. Another item on the group’s immediate todo list is a drive to increase its membership numbers.
