espite trying times for Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) during the 2018/2019 financial year, it maintained a clean audit for the 19th year. This was reported by Rob Kane, the CCID’s chair, at the annual general meeting at SunSquare in the CBD on Monday 18 November. Kane says the CCID faced difficult times and he challenged all stakeholders to retain the clean audit status.

He says they had to deal with the drought, load shedding, growing homelessness and a tough economy still putting strain on their finances. According to him, these resulted in social ills like aggressive begging and opportunistic crime. “We had to deal with increased demands on services in the critical areas of safety and security, social development and urban management due to unprecedented growth in the CBD. That said, we have shown to be a resilient downtown,” Kane says. He attributes the clean audit to a collective

effort. Tasso Evangelinos, the CCID’s chief executive officer, said other issues they had to deal with include the lack of public services such as toilets to accommodate the influx of people to the city and the “ever-increasing graffiti problem”. Evangelinos, however, says there is a lot to celebrate as several projects run by the CCID have been successful. He says they managed to: . Increase the number of public safety officer from 230 to 300; . Establish an ATM fraud project with
graduates from Chrysalis Academy; . Monitor hotspots; . Collaborate with the City of Cape Town’s solid waste management department to ensure there are enough bins in the CBD and for the Khulisa CCID Bin Project; . Find a new home at the Company’s Garden for the CCID’s Straatwerk and . Prevent floods through a stormwater drainage system. Evangelinos says they are confident that 2020 will be much better and that they will once again be ready to serve the city, ensuring growing economic value.
