amps Bay police station opened its new victim support room on Friday 27 November ahead of the festive season. The three-roomed building located at the back of the station will serve as a safe environment for people that have endured trauma. The facility, which is adult- and childfriendly, boasts a cosy lounge area and two consulting rooms. It will be operational 24/7. Capt Keith Chandler, station commander at Camps Bay police station, says the facility will serve as a haven for victims of crime, sexual assault or missing children. Chandler says 10 community members have opted to become volunteers which he welcomes as he explains police resources are often limited. He says the volunteers will go through a training process to equip them on how to deal with emotional or traumatised victims. Theresa Massaglia, founder of Community Who Cares, says when the call was sent out for victim support volunteers, there was an immediate reaction from community members. Community Who Cares is a community Facebook page which serves as a one-stop

hub where any issue pertaining to the community is solved through the various stakeholders attached to it. Massaglia says: “This was a joint effort from the police and the community, and we want to thank the police for providing this much-needed service.” Massaglia, who is also one of the volunteers, says this is her way of ploughing back into the community. “This facility will serve as a reminder to victims that they are not alone. As a volunteer, I want victims to feel comfortable in knowing that there is someone who cares. Trauma can make or break you; no one should have to go through it alone.” Chandler explains that although the area does not experience frequent violent or heinous crimes, the festive season does bring about an influx of visitors to the beachfront. “During the big days, which is between 16 and 26 December, we normally see an increase in visitor numbers. That is between 26 000 and 28 000 visitors on the beach per day.” Chandler says what is alarming is that, for the past two years, they have seen an increase in toddlers going missing on beaches and ending up at the station. “Last year, officers found 33 toddlers that wandered off from their family; parents
