N
azareth House has been serving vulnerable children and the elderly for the past 138 years, but, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Vredehoek, is facing a financial crisis. The NPO has paved the way for caring for the community’s needs by looking after both children and the elderly since 1882. Nina Grobler, communications officer at the house, says their usual donors simply do not have funds available, leaving their most vulnerable beneficiaries at risk. “We desperately need financial support as the economy has taken a massive knock due to Covid-19. We need your support to ensure that we are able to continue our good work. Nazareth Care is reliant on donations to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the organisation.” She says they have eight facilities in South Africa. These are based in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Port Elizabeth. Grobler says, countrywide, they have 71 children and 595 vulnerable elderly people in their care. She adds that Nazareth House also has 43 international facilities located in the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. In 1881, a small group of Sisters arrived in South Africa at the invitation of the Bishop of Cape Town. Their mission was to care for indigent elderly and orphaned children. Today, more than a hundred years later, Nazareth House South Africa still provides a caring and compassionate haven for the most vulnerable members of society. Grobler says: “Assisted by lay administrative and nursing staff, and a small army of volunteers, the Sisters of Nazareth continue to uphold the core values of Victoire Larmenier, which are as timeless as humanity: justice, patience, love, respect, compassion, and hospitality.” Grobler adds that Nazareth House provides accommodation and care for the aged, specialised dementia care homes, care for
children whose ages range from birth to 18 years of age, accommodation and care for severely disabled children as well as a last resting place for children with terminal conditions. She adds that they also provide a clinic and a hospice for the treatment of TB and HIV patients, and a crèche. Grobler says Nazareth House is reliant on the income of donations, legacies and “goods in kind” to continue the mission. “All donations, grants and other incomes are a necessity to fulfil the shortfall and to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the organisation.”
She says the elderly they care for in Elsies River, Cape Town and in Johannesburg come from the poorest communities and are often previously disadvantaged. She says the Child and Youth Care Centres (CYCC) are based in Cape Town and Johannesburg and are home to approximately 60 babies, toddlers, and youth. Grobler says the operational cost for this year for the CYCC is more than R6.5 million. She adds that they are also in need of funds to fix their tennis court and general maintenance around the building. She says people can assist by supporting their 20K Campaign. It forms part of Nazar-
eth Care’s individual fundraising and is a challenge to get 20 000 individuals to sign up and donate on either a monthly or annual recurring basis to Nazareth Care, committing their belief to the work done through Nazareth House. The 20K Campaign will aid in reducing the monthly shortfall. These funds will be used across the organisation, Nazareth Care Africa. For as little as R50, you can be a part of a campaign that changes lives. V To sign up for a recurring payment, visit nazarethcare.co.za/20kcampaign.
