DISTRICT SIX:

Plea to keep museum’s doors open

T

he District Six Museum, launched in 1994, stands at a crossroads. Having operated for 26 years, the museum faces the possibility of permanent closure. Just like many other tourist attractions, the museum suffered a huge financial blow due to the national lockdown. Having closed its doors to the public just under six months ago, the museum tentatively again opens today (Tuesday). The management, concerned with the facility’s future, is appealing to citizens to “prevent history from disappearing” by donating money to help the museum navigate

its way back to where it was prior to the lockdown. The museum’s operational costs include salaries for at least 15 employees and administrative expenses. “We went from hosting over 69 000 selfguided visits and over 7 500 guided visits to zero visitors to the museum after the announcement of the lockdown in March. We understood the need to do this and recognised the part we had to play in protecting communities, our friends and family,” says Chrischené Julius, the museum’s acting director. Based in the heart of District Six, the museum was established to keep alive the memories of the area. “It came into being as a vehicle for advocating social justice, as a space for reflection and contemplation, and as an

institution for challenging the distortions and half-truths which propped up the history of Cape Town and South Africa,” explains Julius. Julius says the Covid-19 pandemic presented a new set of challenges. She adds that, even though lockdown was downgraded to level two, they do not foresee the number of visitors to the museum increasing anytime soon – at least not for the next six months – meaning there will be little to no income to cover the museum’s costs. Julius says profit was also generated from educational programmes and other activities that took place at the facility, all of which came to a halt at the end of March. “Our biggest challenge is not only ensuring the safety of our 15 staff members, but also ensuring the sustainability of our orga-

nisation. We urgently need your support and solidarity,” she says. Julius explains that there are three options as to how donations can be made. “People can make a monthly donation of R50. This is the value of an entrance fee. Or a once-off donation of R110. This is the value of a guided visit. Or larger once-off donations are welcome,” she says. Julius thanked supporters who have already contributed and says it is encouraging to see how people are doing their bit to keep the doors open. The museum will be open from Tuesdays to Thursdays. Visitors are required to book in advance. V Donations can be made via eft at Standard Bank. Account no: 070 293 686, branch code: 020 909, Swift code: SBZ AZA JJ.
