A Sea Point police officer has been hailed for his alertness and swift response to bring criminals to book. On Monday 13 July, Sgt Heinrich Pretorius was on patrol in Rhine Road, Sea Point, when he spotted a man suspiciously walking towards Main Road, with three flat screen TV-sets wrapped

in a blanket. Pretorius immediately questioned the man. The suspect then took the officer to Embassy Court, High Level, where it was discovered that the flat was broken in to. The suspect tried to evade arrest, but the officer gave chase and caught him. The 34-year-old suspect was detained at Sea Point

police station. He faces charges of being in possession of stolen property and the possession of car breaking implements. The acting station commander, Lt Col Christo Engelbrecht, expressed his gratitude toward Pretorius, and says it shows how effective an extra pair of eyes and ears on the street can be.

Store closes first time in 226 years KAYLYNNE BANTOM @bantomkaylynne The controversial ban on the sale of tobacco in the country has now forced a Cape Town-based tobacco store to close its doors for the first time in 226 years. Sturk’s Tobocconists in Greenmarket Square first opened its doors in August 1793 supplying customers with cigarettes and other tobacco products. But with the sale of tobacco still prohibited under level three of the lockdown, the store is feeling the pinch. Owner Diane Bravo says the government does not realise the impact the ban has on businesses. “I fear our government does not have our best interests at heart. Many livelihoods are being compromised, many people are losing their jobs or their businesses but, more importantly, the crooks are getting richer benefiting from their unscrupulous greed; and we, the man on the street, are suffering.” She says this is not just about the smoker or the shop owner. “This is about an industry that employs thousands of people, from the tobacco farmer to the factories to the cigarette companies and, finally, after going through many more channels, to the consumer.” Bravo has strongly criticised government’s initial decision to lift the ban on alcohol sales saying it makes no sense that alcohol can be sold but not cigarettes. Bravo has had to share the news

of the closure with her loyal customers who have been supporting the business for over two centuries. Some took to Facebook to express their disappointment. Michele Papen says: I have such fond memories of the shop from my youth. The eighties and nineties, it was an institution and such a very beautiful shop, an asset to our city. It reminded me of a time when Cape Town central was a great

place to hang ... your closing will be a loss to the city.” Derek Baker says: I have been buying my cigarettes from Sturk’s Tobacconists for 27 years; now they will need us to help them.” Bravo has urged people not to support those selling tobacco illegally. “I know it is hard to be without your smokes, but, please, do not support the illegal trade,” she says.
