on the women already battling to come to terms with this. And all in a bid to make small talk.

I was raised with the phrase, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

And now I am telling you, asking “when” is not a conversation starter, it is not a topic up for discussion and if you ask me again, just one more time, I might slap you with a “WHEN are you going to stop being an insensitive prick and mind your own business”?

And on top of that we should stop accepting that older generations should be allowed to say and do as they please, based purely on their age. We smile and shrug it off when in fact this is completely unacceptable.

If you really are desperate to start a conversation with someone, ask them how they are doing, talk about the weather or ask them what exciting things are happening in their lives.

Leave the “when” and the “you-got-fat” conversation starters for the bottom of the barrel . . . but that’s another story for another time.

As a society, it seems we are incapable of minding our own business.

And at this stage I’m not sure what to say in response anymore. Most often I resort to a humorous or sarcastic reply. “Don’t plan my womb” is usually the go-to.

But then I started thinking about it a bit more and realised that while I am not sure if I am even able to have children or not, there are many women out there who have been confirmed infertile.

And naturally also some who simply do not want to procreate due to family history, personal preference, crime, careers or whatever other reason they have. Side note, yes, they are entitled to this choice.

Now think about this: a woman who longs for a child, who is incapable of conceiving her own and cannot afford the process of adoption. I am sure this is a heartbreaking realisation for any person. Then you, busybody, come in hot with that stupid, insensitive and quite frankly inappropriate question of “when?”

Some would never admit this is their situation and to be honest, it in any case is none of your business. I mention this because should this happen to you – and the likelihood of this happening is very probable – apologising and standing with egg on your face will not remove the hurt you inflicted

Pandemic halts this year’s carnival A group of 40 learners from Strandfontein Secondary School meant to participate in this year’s Cape Town Carnival will have to wait a little bit longer to showcase their skills following the cancellation of the annual event.

The carnival was scheduled to take place on Human Rights Day, Saturday 21 March, on the Green Point Fan Walk.

However, following president Cyril Ram-

aphosa’s address to the nation over the COVID-19 virus pandemic and measures that have been introduced to curb its spread, organisers have decided to call the carnival off.

“In consultation with our stakeholders, the trustees and management of the Cape Town Carnival resolved to cancel the carnival parade in the best interests of the health and welfare of all people and particularly

the communities we serve,” a statement from the organisers read.

“We would like to thank the 44 community groups, the individuals performers, and the carnival staff that have worked tirelessly to prepare for this event.”

Prof Rachel Jafta, chair of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, said: “My heart goes out to the carnival communities and management tea that have worked so hard to make this year’s parade extra special. Don’t lose hope; we will be back.

“We thank our sponsors and suppliers for their understanding in these uncertain times.”

Jean Prinsloo, principal at Strandfontein Secondary, says the school is the only high school in the Strandfontein community and “is a beacon of hope for a mixed community that has a few informal settlements such as 7de Laan and Plasie.”

The group, featuring 40 learners from Strandfontein and suburbs like Pelican Heights, Pelican Park, Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and Nyanga, was meant to showcase their parade, Umswenko: Move to Your Own Beat.

Umswenko was originally expressed by miners as a way of celebrating life beyond the hardships of day-to-day work, using song, dance and fashion as a way out of their grim reality.

In its new incarnation, it is once again enlivening a group of people in difficult circumstances, giving them a sense of purpose, joy and unity.

“We’ve been practising rigorously for about a month now, sacrificing intervals, practising after school, and even doing three-hour sessions on a Saturday,” says Judith Simmers, one of the choreographers.

Led and choreographed by Simmers, Fadley Hamsa and Merissa Schrikker, the group had evolved quickly into a safe place of fun, friendship, laughter and brilliance.

Keeble-Mercuur, who would have been a participant, says there’s a buzz among the learners that wasn’t there before. Learners agree that the many hours of practising and togetherness have enabled the children to build new friendships, keep them out of harm’s way, and open their minds to new possibilities.

he Table Bay Harbour police say there has been a crime spike in the Waterfront precinct and asks that tourists and shoppers be vigilant.

Station commander Lt Col Henry Heydenrych says theft out of motor vehicles and theft from restaurants are often being reported.

Heydenrych says: “Motorists need to make sure that they lock their vehicles and close all the windows. If they do leave valuable things behind, this must be locked away in the boot.”

He says motorists need to be especially vigilant of signal

jammers. “Don’t walk away from the vehicle and then activate the alarm. Do it while you are standing next to your car and make sure the doors are locked.”

Heydenrych added that there has been cases reported where motorists returned to their vehicle to find that their valuables have been stolen because the car was not locked.

Sgt Shanaaz Filander, sector manager, says: “Often we do patrols on the Waterfront and we find that people are leaving their bags, cell phones or other valuables unattended. Criminals are always lurking around, so they need to take more caution.”

Filander says people tend to be in a relaxed mode and forget to keep things like their handbags, cell phones, laptops and camera’s close by.

Heydenrych has a stern warning for people making use of cyberspace to buy items. “If you are buying or selling an item on Gumtree, when you are the seller make sure that the money is reflected in your bank account first before you do the hand-over. The same rule should apply to those buying things.”

The officer added that crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

The owner of Fight for Fit Gym in the heart of the Cape Town (CBD) says his aim is to teach his clients more than being fit but valuable life lessons as well.

Jacques Portelli (37) believes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), a self-defence system that focuses on ground fighting or grappling, can help people cope with life’s challenges.

Portelli says he has always had a passion for martial arts and started training Judo when he was 8 years old. He competed in several local and national competitions.

However, in 2011 Portelli was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a congenital disorder (one present at birth) of blood vessels in the brain.

After he was diagnosed and waiting to undergo surgery, he was forced to take a break from his passion.

He underwent brain surgery and was out of the game for six months.

He says: “It was terrible for me to not be able to partake or teach people Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I had opened a gym in Camps Bay at the time and business was not going well, because I could not train anymore.”

He started working as a security guard at a night club and did other work to earn an income. But he was not happy, he missed being on the mat.

In 2015 Portelli returned to the gym, which has since been opened at Tulbagh Centre in the CBD. He started doing light BJJ training.

When asked what it is about BJJ that has him so hooked he simply says: “It is focused on ground fighting and takedowns are part of the syllabus. You use joint locks and chokeholds to defeat an opponent bigger and stronger than you.

Proven over and over to be one of the most effective forms of martial arts.”

Portelli is now back at the gym full time. He says BJJ helped him cope and come to terms with his medical condition. “It taught me patience and that sometimes in life, just like in BJJ, you fall down, but getting back up is what is most important,” says Portelli.

He says BJJ is a stress reliever as well and added that most of his clients come to the gym either before or after a hectic work day. He added that both children and parents have signed up.

The father of twin girls says: “The practice of BJJ teaches students self-defence, confidence, fitness, conditioning, stamina, and self-awareness.

“Most importantly it teaches you to cope with failure and persevere through tough situations.”

He says they don’t only offer BJJ classes but also fitness classes that concentrate on using your own body weight to lessen injuries.

“I like using BJJ movements in fitness classes. The only form of weights we use are kettlebells and that’s to build core strength, power and balance while also sculpting, toning.”

His wife Kirsty says due to a traumatic experience she used to suffer from anxiety but according to her this has subsided after she started with BJJ. “Living in South Africa, women always walk around with anxiety if walking alone. But I’ve learnt even if I can’t beat a man up, I at least have the skills to defend myself.”

Portelli’s advice to a client is always: “It’s important to know that if things didn’t go your way, you can try again and not give up on your efforts to achieve your goals.”

matric learner from Reddam House College in Green Point is on a mission to have animals sterilised. Willow Collins started an animal welfare club at her school.

The energetic teen also founded Bark in the Park, a family friendly charity event to raise funds for the sterilisation of township dogs and cats.

Willow says: “Unfortunately most shelters in Cape Town are filled and are having to turn away stray and abandoned animals.

The problem is backyard breeding. Everyone loves a puppy but once that puppy grows up, sadly people lose interest and those animals are left to fend for themselves.”

Willow, who has always had a passion for animals, says that if there were by-laws in place to prevent breeding, there would be no need for animal shelters.

Willow says with the previous Bark in the Park last year, they raised enough funds to sterilise dogs and cats in Elim near Caledon.

On Saturday 14 March Willow successfully had her third Bark in the Park event at Green Point Urban Park.

Event goers were treated to dog shows, food stalls and entertainment. People could also have their pets micro-chipped or have a professional portrait taken with their favourite furry friend.

Willow says proceeds will go to Enviro Vet, a satellite community veterinary clinic in Joostenbergvlakte. A mass sterilisation will initiative takes place at Enviro Vet today (Tuesday 17 March).

Willow hopes learners at Reddam would carry on with her legacy when she leaves the school.

The organising committee took the decision during the third round of matches on Sunday 15 March, which were abandoned after the first innings.

“It is a public health risk decision,” said the head of the tournament’s medical committee,” Dr Parag Pandya.

“The decision was taken for the protection of the players, given their age demographic, but also for the local population given that 95% of known cases in South African have come from travellers.”

Seven of the 11 visiting teams have been staying in the same Cape Town hotel where appropriate precautions have been taken and they will remain there until arrangements can be made for their departure.

“The decision was taken by the organising and medical committees but it is fully endorsed by the sponsors,” said Evergreen Lifestyle spokesman Arthur Case.

“There was a great desire to continue but, in the end, it became apparent that cancellation was the right thing to do.”

Former Western Province and Proteas all rounder, Alan Dawson, was the match-winner for the second game in succession, as South Africa’s veterans clinched a two-run win in a nail-biting finish against England at Wynberg Boys High School on Friday – although another former international all rounder, Pieter Strydom, contributed most to set up the victory.

Strydom had earlier held South Africa’s stuttering innings together with a robust 40 from 43 balls with Dave Callaghan’s 21 and Dawson’s 19 the next highest scorers in a modest total of 173 all out.

In other results on Friday: Pakistan (197-6) beat India (193-7) by 4-wickets. Australia (169-7) beat West Indies (168 all out) by three wickets.

Zimbabwe (207 all out) beat Sri Lanka (198 all out) by 9-runs. Wales (162-2) beat Namibia (161-8) by 8-wickets.

SA was drawn in Pool B and competed against England, Pakistan, India, Wales and Namibia.

In Pool A the defending champions, Australia, competed against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Canada.

Following president Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration placing the country in a state of disaster in response to the Covid-19 outbreak on Sunday 15 March, major sporting bodies have cancelled their fixtures.

The Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC), which oversees multiple sporting codes and reports to the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), have released a statement saying they have taken heed of the recommendation that encourages social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus. “We request that all members in the sporting fraternity begin the immediate practice of social distancing,” read the statement by WCPSC president JP Naudé.

The statement further outlines that all sport in the province is postponed or cancelled with immediate effect for the next two weeks (14 days), which includes:

. Clubs, district, provincial and national activity and includes junior and senior sports activities. . Amateur and professional sports gatherings. . Formal and informal sport gatherings . Private and institutional sports gatherings. . Practice and competition.

“Although the first action is a suspension of 14 days, this could change or be extended on further notice. We will continue to engage with our partners and the health authorities so that we, in turn, may advise you with accurate and timeous information so that you are in a position to make informed decisions.

“If ever there was a time for the sport to contribute to the nation, this is it.”
