Breaking records to feed more KAYLYNNE BANTOM KAYLYNNE.BANTOM@MEDIA24.COM
T
heir aim was to make 125 000 sandwiches in one hour to feed the needy on Mandela Day (Saturday 18 July). But the team at Ladles of Love together with Capetonians outdid themselves and set a world record when they made over 300 000 sandwiches. “A total of 304 583 jam sarmies to be exact,” says an elated Danny Diliberto, founder of Ladles of Love, a non-profit, volunteer soup kitchen for the homeless. Diliberto says the non-profit organisation (NPO) has expanded extensively during the national lockdown period, serving thousands of those in need across Cape Town. He says over 50 tons of food parcels are distributed weekly. According to Diliberto, the sandwich drive takes place each week but they wanted to do something special on Mandela Day. “We called on Capetonians to help us break the world record for the most sandwiches made in an hour. “People were asked to register on our website where after they would receive a free sandwich-making kit, consisting of five loaves of bread and one tin of jam,” explains Diliberto. He thanked their sponsors, Sasko and Rhodes, who provided 14 000 loaves of bread and 2 500 tins of jam, respectively. Diliberto jokingly says: “Some retailers
complained that they were running out of bread.” According to Diliberto they received an overwhelming response, with people from all over the Cape Peninsula registering to take part. He says various depots, where sandwiches could be dropped off, were established. “Thousands of people came together, in spirit, to make sandwiches for people in need. For one hour, we worked as one with one goal only: to feed as many people as we possibly could and set a world record in the process,” explains Diliberto. According to Diliberto, the Guinness World Record for most sandwiches made in an hour stood at just over 57 000, while the South African record for most sandwiches made, which was set in 2019, stands at 107 418. On Saturday 18 July just after 14:00, Diliberto took to social media to reveal their final tally, which was almost double their original target. “The Mandela Day World Record Challenge revealed the caring heart that beats in the Mother City. We made history together. What an incredible way to honour Madiba’s legacy,” expressed Diliberto. He encouraged people to keep the same momentum and spirit by continuing to support the organisation. “We are always in need of donations. But people can also support us in any way they can. Help us to make every day a Mandela Day,” says Diliberto. V People who wish to donate can visit http://ladlesoflove.org.za/.
