2 Showing the love by feeding Woes of wearing protective masks

The Ladles of Love, a soup kitchen and feeding programme run by volunteers, has gone from feeding hundreds of vulnerable people per month to now preparing more than 100 000 meals per week for people from across Cape Town. The group currently operates from the Cape Town International Convention Centre where 80 volunteers help prepare meals, pack and distribute parcels. RIGHTS

Ready to serve children KAYLYNNE BANTOM KAYLYNNE.BANTOM@MEDIA24.COM

“M

y vision is for children to enjoy better childhoods and realise the full extent of their rights.” This is the society envisioned by Christina Nomdo, the newly appointed Western Cape Children’s Commissioner. Monday 1 June will not only see the country move to alert level four of the national lockdown and Grade 7 and Grade 12 learners returning to school after a two-month hiatus, but will also mark a historical event for the Western Cape as Nomdo takes office as the first Children’s Commissioner. Alan Winde, provincial premier announced on Monday 18 May that the appointment process has been finalised with Nomdo formally accepting the position.

Nomdo’s mountainous task is to “monitor, investigate, research, and educate the public about, lobby for and advise on matters pertaining to children in the Western Cape,” explained Winde. Winde added: “As a province and as a country, we face a number of challenges which impact children in various ways. Having a dedicated Children’s Commissioner, who is a watchdog for their rights, is an important step in protecting them.” The veteran children’s rights advocate says she is ready to serve: “Much appreciation to the premier for acknowledging the value of the particular skills and experience I bring to this role. I look forward to serve the children of the Western Cape, and support families and communities to care for them.” Born and bred in Belhar, Nomdo draws on three decades of experience in the children’s sector. She says it was in her home town that

she was given the opportunity to develop models of practice, “first, in children’s librarianship as a local government civil servant then in youth development with a nonprofit initiative focused on the training of health professionals,” says Nomdo. Asked what she would like to achieve during her tenure, she answered: “I will work with the departments of education, social development, health, cultural affairs and sports to advance children’s rights. Children must be able to play freely. They must be able to attain optimal health and be educated to reach their full potential.” Nomdo says she is concerned about how the lockdown is affecting vulnerable children. “This lockdown, a necessary measure to keep us all safe, can also be a dangerous time for children.” She says unlike adults, they may not be able to report gender-based

violence during the lockdown while they are cut off from their support system. “It does not mean children are not crying out, it just means they are crying alone,” she explained. Nomdo says she is ready to work with government in the fight against Covid-19. “In order to contribute child rights insights to the responses to the pandemic, I will need to engage with children. Children need to know that they can share their experiences and raise their concerns with decision-makers especially during this pandemic and lockdown.” Nomdo, a mother herself, says she knows the position does not come without challenges but that will not deter her. “I am uniquely capable of connecting with children authentically. Insights from their lived realities are translated into development practice models and policy instruments,” she says.
