P
lans are now underway to help youth from ward 49 to learn important skills that could result in the saving of lives or future employment opportunities. This follows what was meant to be a day workshop at the Alpha Lifesaving Club in BlueWaters, Strandfontein, on Saturday 13 February. A total of 15 youths between the ages of 15 and 18 attended the workshop and with interest from the community and parents,
the opportunity presented itself to develop a lifesaving and water awareness programme in the ward. “In my experience, I noticed that the young children in Athlone have a strong attachment to the water. This is why we had a problem when the pools were closed,” says ward 49 councillor, Rashid Adams. Adams says they plan to make use of the Athlone Swimming Pool to take the programme forward and in the next few weeks meetings will take place to get the ball rolling. Adams says using the pools is more centrally situated, instead of travelling to Strandfontein.
“The City spent a lot of money revamping the Athlone pool, making sure it is up and running and put to good use. I said to the community to take ownership of this pool. Other than just for recreation purposes, what else can we do there?” The programme will focus on teaching youth about how to swim properly, selfawareness, marine life, environmental awareness and what to do in case of drowning, someone having an injury or heart attack and other emergencies. It also aims to expose youth to other water activities, such as water polo. “Teaching them to swim properly creates safety around swimming and takes it one
step further,” says Adams. The training will also allow the youth to learn skills that may allow them to apply as seasonal lifeguards during the summer season, says Adams. “This will encourage children to do something positive and use that as a deterrent to what is currently happening on the streets and the attraction of the streets is not healthy for our young people at all,” says Adams. The programme will be run in conjunction with Alpha Lifesaving Club and other individuals with knowledge in the field. Once the programme is up and running, youth will be invited to sign up.
