SINKHOLE: Residents in Sea Point experienced water disruptions after a burst pipe caused a huge sinkhole in St John’s Road on Tuesday 3 November. One car was caught in the sinkhole, which occurred between Main and Beach roads. According to, Nicola Jowell, the councillor for ward 54, the water leak caused the displacement of the soil under the road and resulted in the weakness of the surface which caused a sinkhole. Jowell says no injuries were reported and adds that repairs to the road was completed later that evening. PHOTO: NICOLA JOWELL| FACEBOOK
BO-KAAP
Claims rock community KAYLYNNE BANTOM KAYLYNNE.BANTOM@MEDIA24.COM
“I
mams are not equipped to deal with sexual assault cases.” So says Sheikh Riad Fataar, second deputy president at the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC). The question was raised following a second Youtube video released by a young woman who alleges that she was sexually abused for several years by her paternal grandfather who resides in the Bo-Kaap. In the latest video the woman, who now lives in Jordan in the Middle East, claims that last year her brother informed the Imam in Bo-Kaap about what happened to her. But she says nothing was done about her complaint. According to Fataar, the MJC first learnt about the allegations through the media. “Imams are not professionally equipped in dealing with not only sexual abuse cases, but also incidences of rape or gender-based violence. An Imam can only refer someone to
the police.” On Tuesday 20 October the Bo-Kaap community was rocked by sexual abuse allegations implicating prominent Bo-Kaap twin brothers. The 85-year-old brothers were identified in the video titled, Exposing Paedophilia by Community Leaders in Cape Town. In the 15-minute clip, the woman who doesn’t reveal her face identifies herself as the granddaughter of one of the twins. She explicitly details how her grandfather sexually molested her from the age of five until she was 11 years old. “I was five when the abuse started and at the time, I thought that I was the only one being abused,” claims the woman, adding that someone close to her and similar in age was abused by the other twin. She also says she spoke to several other women, some family members, who were also abused by the pair. The woman explains that the video was the only way to get the perpetrators, who served as educators and principals at local schools, to be held accountable.
“Whenever I used to talk about it, I was told to get over it and that it’s in the past: that they’re old and going to die soon. It’s been decades and nothing has ever been done.” The woman’s brother says in a Facebook post, the reason that his sister took these measures was a last resort to stop the sexual abuse by these perpetrators. “The first step we took was to reach out to some family members to make them aware, but it did not result in a solution. My sister then asked a family lawyer what could be done from the legal aspect of things and she was told nothing, which was untrue. I then spoke to an Imam which also resulted in no solution.” In the latest video titled Message to the Community + Legalities on Child Sexual Abuse, the woman thanked everyone who has shown her support. She also shares details of organisations that deal with sexual abuse cases and legal advice for victims. The MJC said in a statement that one of the twins, who served on the education board of the MJC, has been suspended.
Osman Shaboodien, chair of Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association (BKCRA), says they support the victim. He adds that the alleged perpetrators were removed from all positions that they were serving. Masturah Adams, a community leader, says she was shocked by the allegations as the men are well respected in the community. “The allegations of paedophilia and childabuse has shaken our community and now, more than ever, we need to stand together and call out this type of behaviour. It is our women and families that go through the trauma of abuse and have to live with it.” Adams says it imperative that community members put their differences aside and do what is right to ensure similar incidences do not occur. WO Rowan Andrews, the investigating officer, says the police’s hands are tied if victims do not come forward. According to Andrews, because the victim lives abroad, she would have to send a signed affidavit after which police can then react. V Andrews also encouraged other victims to contact his office on 021 590 1001 or 082 729 8155.
