omen from Vrygrond and the surrounding areas are being given a new lease on life through projects they are running.

These women are doing all they can to conquer their challenges.

The women are part of the Siyazenzela sewing and beading project of the Where Rainbows Meet organisation.

The project is aimed at women who face many social challenges and try to rise above them. The programmes have become a beacon of hope to many disadvantaged women, whether they are unemployed, destitute or abused.

“We welcome everyone with open arms. It is very good to see how the women embrace life after the training and how they rise above their circumstances. Women are being taught how to say: ‘No,’ and how to say: ‘Enough is enough.’

“Those who attend the projects have been through a lot of challenges. However, they told themselves that they would not stay down. Through the project they have learnt to love themselves again. The project has helped them pull themselves out of the deep hole they thought they were in and given them a second chance in life. They get together and teach each other a lot of different things and have taken it upon themselves to hold a women’s empowerment workshop once a week in order to have fun and strengthen the relationship between the

women,” he says.

The beading and sewing project is open to anyone who wants to learn something new.

The participants meet every Tuesday.

Whatever they make is sold to sustain the project and to be given to the participants as a stipend.

Last week Thursday they took a trip to the beach as part of the workshop.

“When they got to the beach, all the women kicked off their shoes and went frolicking in the water with one another. It was a great opportunity for the women to get out of their normal work environment and experience something different, for example bringing out their inner child.

“In addition to playing in the ocean, the women gathered shells to proudly display ‘Siyazenzela’, the name of their workplace.

project. This art project will be a big painting that embodies all the work and passion of the women in the sewing and beading project,” says Cupido.

Building up to the 16 Days of Activism campaign these women will be running several workshops on time management, resilience, conflict resolution and communication, among other topics.

Cupido says the objective of the workshops is to grow.

“We could clearly see how they appreciated just connecting with themselves and each other as women. We are hoping to engage with other organisations for our women to connect with other women and learn from them, and know that, as women, they are stronger than a rock,” he says.

Having competed locally and represented South Africa on the world stage, athletes of the Boxer Superstores Athletics Club will be lacing up their running shoes to join the race day action at the 10th annual JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans Race later this month.

Along with them, residents, avid runners and families alike will run the 5km, 10km or 21.1km races on Saturday 25 November.

All the races will start at Glendale High School and end at Rocklands sports field.

Proteas cricketerJP Duminy, founder of the JP21 Project, is also set to run the 5km race.

The theme for next year’s Cape Town Carnival has been announced and spectators can expect to be blown away by a celebration of the city’s natural beauty.

The theme for the carnival next year is “Mother City, Mother Nature”.

In March next year the carnival will showcase the diversity of the Cape floral kingdom, as well as the diverse people of the Mother City.

Spectators can expect to be impressed by massive floats, ranging from a depiction of Mother Nature with the seed of life in her hands and indigenous flowers of the region to the “tree of life” that connects citizens.

Brad Baard, creative director of the carnival, says: “Next year’s carnival theme emphasises the unique identity of Cape Town and its cultural diversity, plus what we create together: A welcoming, inclusive, creative city, consciously connected to nature and each other.”

Mayor Patricia de Lille adds: “The carnival celebrates our vibrant, dynamic city bringing people from all over Cape Town together and enhances our efforts of building an inclusive city. We’re proud to be part of an event that attracts visitors to our city and contributes to job creation and economic growth.”

Precious nature The critical state of Cape Town’s municipal water supply will also be highlighted during the carnival, premier Helen Zille explains.

“The Western Cape government runs numerous awareness campaigns to address the severe drought that the city of Cape Town is enduring, and the ‘Mother City, Mother Nature’ theme ties in perfectly with this, highlighting our dependence on nature. All South Africans need to be aware of this precious natural resource and support water-

saving initiatives.”

The carnival’s environmental awareness extends beyond the theme, with the float builders and costume makers making extensive use of recycled and repurposed materials to craft the unforgettable parade art-

works every year, and harvesting rainwater to sustain the carnival workshop.

This year’s carnival was attended by more than 45 000 spectators. The carnival supports entrepreneurs and small businesses, and generated work for 1172 people this year.

The theme for the Cape Town Carnival next year is “Mother City, Mother Nature”.

ORGAN DONATION

Transplant numbers drop F

ifty years ago, a Cape Town doctor held the heart that would change modern medicine.

Next month will mark the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant, performed

by Prof Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur Hospital on 3 December 1967.

But today, doctors face an alarming shortage of a key ingredient in these surgeries – hearts donated by organ donors.

While South Africa boasts world-class heart surgeons and facilities, these operations are taking place less frequently in South Africa. Heart transplants in South Africa have almost halved over the last 17 years.

The drop in heart transplants equates to much less growth than other emerging countries. In comparison, Brazil (which faces similar socioeconomic and political challenges to South Africa) experienced a tripling of the number of heart transplants performed since 2000, the Organ Donor Foundation explains in a statement.

The drop has been attributed to one simple factor: Too few South Africans are willing to give consent to donate their own or a loved one’s organs.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in 10 people suffer from chronic kidney disease and 10 000 South African

men and women, young and old, will die of kidney disease or kidney failure every year.

“The enormous task of public awareness and education in South Africa is of crucial importance because the number of 4300 children and adults awaiting lifesaving organ and cornea transplants is increasing every month and we can anticipate that in the not so distant future these numbers might become pandemic. This is exacerbated by the poor lifestyle choices of many South Africans, which results in an increase in diabetes and hypertension, which can lead to chronic kidney disease and ultimately kidney failure.”

Last year, surveys by the foundation showed that more than 70% of the South Africans interviewed would accept an organ if they needed it. However, three-quarters of the same people said they were not prepared to donate their organs.

“The problem in South Africa is apparent and despite the fact that these surveys indicate that most South Africans know about transplantation, the majority of our citizens do not have enough knowledge to make an informed decision about organ donation,” the foundation says.

“Our call to all South Africans is to encourage them to register as organ donors.

These registered individuals will receive

education and be empowered with more intensified knowledge of organ donation. The more registered organ donors there are, the more South Africans can be mobilised to help further educate our population. The ultimate goal is for all families to give consent for their loved ones’ organs to be donated at that time when approached by medical professionals.”

The foundation is calling on all South Africans to register as organ donors ahead of the 50th anniversary next month.

“Your heart, liver and pancreas can save three lives and your kidneys and lungs can help up to four people. You can save seven lives. You can help up to 50 people by donating your corneas, skin, bone and heart valves. Often family members will donate one of their kidneys to a relative in need,” the foundation says.

“The foundation believes organ donors give people who have suffered a long-term illness hope for a healthy and dramatically improved quality of life. By registering to become an organ donor, you could give an only living parent another chance to look after their children, give a future to a child and added years with family to a sister or brother.”

Local kids have their wishes granted Some 6000 learners from poor areas in the city recently compiled wish lists, hoping that someone would notice and respond to their requests.

The children’s wish lists formed part of a competition by TraceOnline.

Laeeqah Robyn and Mishay Bartlett of Rio Grande Primary School in Manenberg, Christina van Notshokvu, Abasia Williams and Misa Mathanga of Hillwood Primary School in Retreat, Kathan Anthony of Woodville Primary School in Woodlands, Salatha Koba and Imange Madyolo of Siyabulela Primary School in Langa and Cayden Sampson and Donisha Richards of Parkdene Primary School in Kraaifontein each got their wishes in part or in full. Siyabulela Primary also won stationery worth R1000.

Most requests were heartbreakingly simple, says Anneri Coetzer, TraceOnline project manager.

This has once again emphasised how many people struggle to make ends meet and just how little it takes to bring joy to a child, she says.

“Hearing primary school children’s desperate longing for a blanket or a bed, just to have a comfortable and warm sleep at night, had our staff in tears,” says Coetzer.

For the past seven years, TraceOnline has been contracted by the City of Cape Town to help residents who rent or buy City housing with information on housing and grants, and to collect housing payments.

“Our staff have worked through thousands of requests reflecting destitute conditions and desperate needs,” Coetzer says.

“We are out and about in these areas every day and experience people’s suffering and heartache. But it’s a different story when you read a note in a young child’s unsteady handwriting, baring his little heart about not having enough food at home, having to share a bed and a single blanket with multiple siblings, or the Grade 1 girl just wanting something to eat every day.

“Being present in these areas on a daily basis, we see a lot of heartache and many

needs. For this reason, we decided to turn a few of the children’s dreams into reality.

But the little ones’ pain, sadness and desires truly caught us off guard.”

Many of the children said they were living in dire conditions and urgently needed food, clothing, blankets, beds and mattresses.

One Grade 2 boy simply wanted a twoplate stove, as his unemployed mother cooked their food at his aunt’s house every day because they did not have any cooking facilities of their own. Some children asked for improved security, because they felt unsafe.

MANDRAX HAUL: Three people from Hillview were arrested with R54 000 worth of mandrax following a a tip-off to police on Wednesday that sent police officers to a residence in Potberg Road, Hillview. Muizenberg police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp says two men were immediately arrested trying to flee the premises. They were found with 100 mandrax tablets each. “A thorough search of the premises was then conducted and the officers found another 700 mandrax tablets. The two men, aged 29 and 41, both residents of Hillview, were arrested on the scene and charged with possession of drugs. The owner of the residence, a 35-year-old man, was arrested and detained on charges of dealing in drugs,” he says.

BAG OF BULLETS: A 28-year-old man

from Lavender Hill was detained by Steenberg police after he was found with five 9mm rounds of ammunition and one box of dagga in a blue bag on Wednesday. Metro Police acted on information about illegal ammunition at a house in Fawley Court, leading to the arrest.

City gives R2m to bring arts closer A

rtscape’s audience development and education programme has received a R2m funding boost from the City of Cape Town.

The theatre and City signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday as part of the grant-in-aid that the City is giving the theatre.

The funding will be used to support specific programmes, which focus on the youth, gender, vulnerable groups, heritage and culture, and the resource centre.

The City is supporting projects that aim to bring the arts closer to audiences who would not otherwise have the opportunity.

“The City decided to partner with Artscape as part of our efforts to take arts and culture programmes to

the most vulnerable residents in the city. Artscape is already taking arts to communities who may not have had the chance to see a dance, theatre or performance piece.

“With our assistance, they are able to reach a much wider audience. This grant-in-aid will enable them to continue the good work that they are doing in audience development and education,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

An example of this is the arts development programme at the Guga S’Thebe cultural centre in Langa, where participants are taught to craft indigenous instruments. They are then brought to Artscape to be exposed to the arts performed in a

The closing date for donations is Friday 24 November to allow time for sorting before the handover. The Grandparent Giftathon (also known as Grand Gift) needs 2500 gift boxes for elderly people of 19 Ikamva Labantu senior clubs around Cape Town.

Organiser Alison Wills says the project has brought smiles to thousands of vulnerable senior citizens across Cape Town over the years. Ikamva Labantu’s spokesperson, Gemma Cowan, asks the public to support this collection drive to give back to those elderly who contributed to the Struggle, and who are now raising future generations with no acknowledgement or appreciation. She says this is a way to show appreciation for the elders’ contribution to society and to

professional environment.

“There is no doubt that the arts strengthen the economy and spark creativity and innovation. The arts also have a social impact, exposing communities to a variety of genres and skills. This helps to preserve our culture and heritage and is an investment that the City of Cape Town is honoured to make,” says Smith.

“Through the arts, we are compelled to challenge what we think about issues and the world around us. To that end, everyone should see a theatre performance every now and again. We are proud of the work done by Artscape thus far and look forward to our partnership having an even greater impact.”

Gifts needed for elders make them feel loved and acknowledged.

“Many seniors are surviving on their monthly pension of just R1600. Many care for and support large families with this money, often putting the needs of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren before their own needs. Many seniors are also isolated and seen as a burden to their families and communities, they are also vulnerable to abuse and neglect. For many elderly, this care package will be the only gift they receive at Christmas,” Cowan says.

The Grand Gift project was found in 2012.

Wills adds: “To visit the Ikamva Labantu senior clubs and see the delight on the faces of the seniors reinforces the reason that we do this.”

Lulama Sigasana, head of seniors at Ikamva Labantu, says the organisation runs vari-

ous programmes for the elderly on weekdays and support from projects like Grand Gift are the reason the clubs have grown from strength to strength and continue to help members. She says the clubs accommodate members from 55 years old upwards.

The general value of a gift package is R100 and items should be able to fit into an icecream container or similarly sized box.

A gift package can include toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, facecloth, small chocolate or packet of sweets, small packet of biscuits, a packet of tissues or a handkerchief, unisex pair of socks, small notebook and pen, small tube of hand or body lotion and a deck of cards or dominoes.

He has also produced a local version of Hanover Park’s Got Talent, and has sold more than 10 000 copies of his first album and DVD. The 33-year-old is set to pay tribute and celebrate the country’s legends of the jazz industry during his five-week run, which includes Robbie Jansen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Basil Coetzee and Zayn Adam.

“Cape jazz has a unique sound which can only be heard in Cape Town and is best played by musicians from the city. It is a festive Hanover Park-born jazz musician Jonathan Rubain.

Powerful story of simplicity Amee Lekas’s Die dans van die watermeid (“The dance of the water maiden”), which was chosen for development at Kunste Onbeperk’s inaugural Teksmark (script market) initiative in Cape Town last year is on at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio.

It will continue until Saturday 25 November at 20:15 or 20:30.

Lekas’s debut script was selected out of 14 entries at a presentation of short extracts by the Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-inisiatief (NATi) and the Baxter Theatre Centre.

It was lifted from the page and brought to the stage as a full-scale production, directed

by Jason Jacobs with a stellar cast.

Rehane Abrahams (Womb of fire, The real people) leads the ensemble alongside Abduragman Adams (Suidooster, Noem my Skollie), Elton Landrew (Kat and the Kings, Boesman en Lena), Ephraim Gordon (Die laaste karretjiegraf, Blood brothers), Gretchen Ramsden (Portret, Agamemnon) and Celeste Matthews-Wannenburgh (Suip!, District Six: The musical).

Cornelia Faasen, executive director of NATi, says Lekas has a unique voice.

“Talking and listening to her gave me the sense of an artist who is equally blessed with a beautiful innocence and the wisdom and language ability of someone who is a thousand years old, such is her impact as a young writer. It felt as if the work called out to be staged, to be performed and to give a voice

to many of the voiceless in our communities,” she says.

Die dans van die watermeid is a heartbreaking story set against the backdrop of Willowmore in the Klein Karoo where Lekas grew up. It offers a unique look at the people from the region in a script that is powerful, without undermining the inherent simplicity.

The story revolves around how they hold on to their superstitions in spite of the influence of the church. It also addresses social issues, such as today’s young people who struggle without the prospect of a job or a better life, while these communities sweep things under the carpet. And all this, right under the nose of the church. Meanwhile, the rhythm of the water nymph’s dance reverberates with the promise of deliverance when the rain comes.

Lekas (26), a Stellenbosch University Drama graduate, completed the text under the mentorship of playwright Saartjie Botha.

Lekas says: “Through the grace of telling the story of Die dans van die watermeid I had the opportunity to create something from my own distress in the hope that people will become aware of the pain of those around them.”

The most downloaded classical musician is performing at two concerts in Cape Town this week.

Valentina Lisitsa held a masterclass concert and will perform in the Cape Town Concert series with young pianists Odern Blaauw (13), Victoria Fokkens (17) and Mike Wang (10) and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO).

The masterclass for learners took place on the Opera House stage at Artscape last Saturday.

Comedian returns to town from US TV debut Two-time Emmy-nominated and Comics’ Choice Award winner Loyiso Gola is one of South Africa’s most loved comedians.

Capetonians will get to experience him in person next month.

Returning to his home town with his brand-new show, Unlearning, Cape Town-born Gola challenges societal norms in his latest comedy offering on stage at the Baxter Theatre on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 December.

In this show Gola will allow audiences to question everything they thought they knew about politics, race, history and more – all delivered with his signature satirical wit.

Gola has just returned from making his TV debut in the United States on the late night TV show 50 Central, a show produced by rapper and actor 50 Cent.

He says he is looking forward to dazzling the Cape Town audience.

“It’s a very introspective show that deals with a lot of issues. It’s very personal, which means I draw a lot from my personal life,”

he says.

The Gugulethu-born host, coproducer and writer of Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola is no stranger to making audiences laugh on TV and on stage.

Gola, who performed Unlearning at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earlier this year, says he is currently going through “a process of personal unlearning”, which he gets to share with the audience.

“I talk about unlearning sexism, masculinity and how I view myself as a black person.”

Gola, who heads to Durban in mid-December with the show after its run in the Mother City, admits that his Cape Town audiences are always a thrill to entertain on stage.

“I enjoy performing in Cape Town because I know the city so well. I dig the city’s culture and vibe – from a steak gatsby to the taxis.”

A

plan to improve the safety of those who come to the rescue of residents was announced at the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) base in Pinelands on Friday.

Provincial health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo described the safety plan following the death of an eight-year-old boy after another attack on an ambulance on Wednesday morning.

The injured boy’s ambulance was robbed at gunpoint en route to hospital on the N2 near Borcherds Quarry.

The boy died later at the hospital.

Paramedics Sithembiso Solomon and Chantal Beesley say they are still shocked and are having nightmares about the ordeal.

Beesley says they are glad the authorities have prioritised their safety before something even more tragic happens to other emergency services workers. She says it is becoming common to have EMS paramedics attacked while helping patients.

Mbombo said on Friday the issue of the emergency workers’ safety could not be dealt with by only the health department, but needed collaborative intervention by all stakeholders.

She said while it was clear that paramedics’ lives were at risk they could not turn a blind eye to the fact that residents were also affected.

She said working with the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement and police could guarantee a safer environment.

“The safety of our health professionals requires a whole-of-society approach to end this scourge and to continue delivering quality healthcare to those who need it most,” she said.

The plan includes increasing police visibility in hotspots and improving their availability when paramedics have to go to patients.

Paramedics will now be required to use a “pick-and-drop strategy” and not first stabilise patients in their homes or at the pickup spots. They will stabilise patients during transportation inside the ambulance.

The department of safety and Law Enforcement will increase cameras in hotspots and on major routes, namely the N1, N2 and N7.

All EMS vehicles will get a 24-hour working panic button linked to other safety stakeholders to make sure prompt response is provided.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social development, said the City would prioritise the linkup of EMS vehicles to the City’s emergency response to make sure they received fast response if they were attacked or needed help.

He said the City had faith in the success of CCTV cameras, so they would be working closely with Law Enforcement to install them in the identified areas.

Robbie Roberts, the City’s director of Law Enforcement, said they were prepared to work harder to enforce security systems in public spaces and help government to enforce safety measures and track down criminals and suspicious people through the use of technology and the City’s manpower.

Gideon Morris, head of the provincial community safety department, also gave the assurance that his department supported the collaboration.

He said they planned to increase the visibility of law enforcers and create a working relationship with the health department by helping paramedics in attending to emergencies and providing backup where needed.

He said police were prioritising the investigation of the recent ambulance attack.

He explained that the footage used to trace the three men who had been arrested was critically evaluated and police were trying to find links between these men and the robbers.

Morris said: “The footage has revealed that about a week ago three men were arrested for conspiracy to commit a crime.

“Those suspects were seen on the footage placing rocks on the road in an attempt to stop their targets, which was also the case in the recent incident. We cannot say whether it is a syndicate until the case has been finalised.”

ore than 27 000 people descended on Killarney this weekend to witness the local leg of the World Rallycross (RX) championships.

The world’s best RX drivers entertained Capetonians with fastpaced action and highly skilled handling of their supercars at the last stop on the World RX championship season this year.

Despite receiving overwhelming support for their World RX debut season, home favourites Mark Cronje and Ashley Haigh-Smith could not reach the semi-finals.

World champion Johan Kristoffersson from Sweden walked away with top weekend honours.

“It’s fantastic to wrap up the teams and drivers’ championship and to also take the win at the final round of the season,” says Kristoffersson who won seven of the 12 events this season.

“I think we’ve won over a lot of new support during our time in South Africa and the crowd really helped make this weekend a memorable event,” says Paul Bellamy,

SEAN CAMPBELL The unbeaten Milnerton Mavericks recorded their fifth consecutive win of the season in a comefrom-behind victory of 9-7 against Battswood on Saturday.

The lead changed hands four times before Mavericks recorded three runs in the eight inning to secure the win, handing Battswood their first defeat of the season.

estridge Yankees continued their revival with a 4-0 victory against Lavender Hill at Turfhall Softball Stadium on Saturday.

Megan Cable played a pivotal role in the Yankees team, giving up a single hit by Kelly Thompson, while striking out seven of the eighteen batters she faced.

Yankees got off to a flying start, scoring two runs in their first turn at bat. Glynis Koopman (2-3) and Charmelle Witbooi (2-2) both hit triples off pitcher Chesternay Fortune, who gave up a total of four hits.

Kenfac Phillies got a staggering thirteen hits off Falcons pitcher Nicolene Jones to record an unexpected 12-0 victory in Pinelands. Phillies’ batting prowess was clear with eight batters getting hits. Leading the onslaught were Carla Swanepoel, Chelsea Cohen and Faith Beukes, all batting 2-3.

Cohen also performed admirably on the pitching rubber, striking out six and giving up only two scattered singles from the fourteen batters she faced.

Cohen will be tested this coming week when she faces the big hitting champions, Glenthorn A’s, at Turfhall.

Tantasport kept their sights on a good finish this season with another convincing victory against VOB (11-4).

Nawaal Nacerodien (3-3, including a triple) Roxanne Albertyn (2-3) and Danielle Pienaar (2-3, including two triples) were the pick of the Tanta batters.

Albertyn and Shanine Groepies shared the pitching duties for Tanta and gave up a total of six hits.
