are you doing round this way?” “I’m working on the building site across the road,” Explains the duck. “I’m a plasterer.” The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it. So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens for two weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town. The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him “You’re with the circus, aren’t you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!” “Sounds marvelous,” says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. “Get him to give me a call.” So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says, “Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money.” “I’m always looking for the next job,” Says the duck.. “Where is it?” “At the circus,” Says the barman. “The circus?” Repeats the duck. “That’s right,” Replies the barman. “The circus?” The duck

RECOGNIZED AS THE ONLY GREEN CLEANER IN SW FLORIDA! Page 7

Well folks it’s finally happened,

I’ve been ask to throw the gonzo hat into the political arena and while I’m no stranger to politics, I figure they must be running out of fools for fodder. My earliest childhood memories of being raised in the Deep South centers around Election Day. Nary a Sunday would go by that the family wouldn’t gather under the shade of the granddaddy oaks by the shore of the magnificent Mississippi Gulf Coast for hot boiled crawfish, cool jazz, cold Dixie Beer and steamy Southern politics. At the age of two I made my political speech debut from the back of an American flag-draped flatbed tractor trailer where I was skillful in the cute kid routine while asking for votes. It was truly the good ole days when a man’s handshake was his word and kissing a baby and the gift of a quart of fine shine was politics 101. Originally from New Orleans my family was the first of three families to settle the coastal French community of Pass Christian [pass chris-chan], Mississippi – the Kennebunkport of the South. While attempting to escape the city’s filth and disease it wasn’t long before a mass exodus out of New Orleans engulfed the tiny town. Pass Christian boomed and moonshine and murder fueled the economy. The first chief of police ever to be elected in “the Pass” was the legendary moonshiner of the Deep South, Bravo Woodcock. During the days of prohibition a moratorium was placed on sugar and when a load crossed into Mississippi from the sugarcane fields of Louisiana, Bravos’ posse of good ole boys armed with rifles and badges would confiscate it. The sugar was then transported to the Kiln [kill], an even smaller community in the backwoods where large quantities of Grade-A Moonshine was produced and shipped out in 18-wheelers bound for the speakeasies of Chicago. Until this day it has remained a closed secret that Al Capone lived a very comfortable and lavish lifestyle on the Mississippi Coast. Protected by the law, the elusive mobster and Bravo were partners in business. Many years later the Kiln would be known as birthplace

Page 8

Moonshine And Murder: Fear And Loathing In The Deep South By Mayor Gonzo Mays

and training ground for legendary quarterback Brett Favre but for this era, it was long-armed lawman Bravo Woodcock and his unrivaled brew that were legend. A man’s man and politicians’ politician, Bravo was a respected charismatic ladies man. However, the ladies man part of his charm didn’t sit so well with his passionate wife, Clara Belle. As the overseer of Audrey’s, the family’s racetrack and adult arcade, Clara literally could get away with murder –and some say she did. Being a kid I pretty well remember the fat days when the Mississippi Coast was family owned and operated. My mother Audrey had been elected to the all important county seat of election commissioner. Her commitment to the family was to make sure they retained control of the coast –and she did, undaunted by the threat of a 30-year prison term for doctoring ballots. My uncle was the sheriff, another uncle the county supervisor, my cousin was the mayor, another cousin the medical examiner, another cousin the coroner; we were a tight-knit, well-placed Southern family. It was from the whispers of children my own age that I first heard my family referred to as Dixie Mafia. Once during Sunday school the teacher asked the class ‘Who makes the sun shine?’ Hands went up and the kids collectively answered, God! The teacher then asked ‘Who makes the moon shine?’ Hands went up and the kids collectively answered, Bravo Woodcock! On numerous occasions I witnessed my grandfather Bravo mixing business with New Orleans Sicilian Mafioso Carlos Marcello – the man conspiracy theororists suggest may have or-

dered the hit on JFK. The suicide rate in my small hometown was nothing short of a phenomenon – at the time the largest per capita throughout the United States, so, between you, me and the lamppost there was this unspoken code that if you reneged on your agreement with the family you were given 48 hours to tidy up your business, write a loving note to the wife and kids and kiss your ass goodbye. The manner in which you decided to take yourself out was strictly up to you, besides there was too much paperwork involved in murder, and, well, too many murders the feds showed up. Bravo and the good ol’ boys had other business to attend to. They were smart to avoid the attention. Momma, having inherited the family’s late night business, on Sunday morning would sleep late and Bravo would sometimes stop by the house and take me to the Harbor Restaurant for breakfast. Back then I was taught that a kid was seen and not heard, so while townsfolk stopped by the table to shake Bravo’s hand, I’d just sit and listen and wile away the time watching shrimp boats unload the night’s catch. In my mind it appeared that Bravo had the tape worm, for it would be no less than an hour later of just having finished breakfast that he and I would be bellied-up to yet another table having breakfast again. Another hour later we’d climb back into the old Ford pickup and stop and again to eat, and then again, and then again, and again. The same scenario would play out a half dozen times in a single morning at six different locations. It struck me as odd that the ladies would have already prepared Biloxi bacon (fried mullet) and grits, which curiously happened to be Bravo’s favorite.

June 2010

I mean where were the beignets? After I couldn’t possibly eat another bite and as Bravo and I would be getting ready to leave, something else unusual would occur. Each time the men shook hands money would be discretely passed with Bravo always the beneficiary. As we drove along the scenic beach highway to our next meal Bravo would adamantly say to me “the only thing that gets a duck in trouble is its bill.” In some peculiar way I felt as if I was being trained for something but for what I did not know. It was a lot to digest for a kid. To this very day I carry the breakfast lesson with me. Jimmy Buffett once got sideways with a Biloxi nightclub owner and member of the Dixie Mafia when he began dating the incarcerated Dixie Don’s Darling. I guess what Buffett didn’t realized was that just because one goes off to “college” they can still reach out and touch a certain someone. Fortunately for Buffett the family wasn’t all that big into forcing lowly musicians into suicide so they just put the word out on the Strip not to hire him anymore and for a musician that pretty much takes the wag out of the tail. (Refer to Buffett’s song: You’ll Never Work in Dis Bidness Again) In the old days of the Great Mississippi Gulf Coast people who were lucky enough to catch a break were allowed to slip out under the radar. Word was that Buffet skedaddled for Texas. We all know that was then and this is now. The days of those colorful characters are all but gone while the great Mississippi coast booms as an international destination for fun and legal gambling. As for me I think I’ll just stick with enjoying the spoils of being the Honorary Mayor of Key West, but as flattered as I am to have been asked to run for public office, I’ve lived and learned my lesson in politics. However, if I were foolish enough to stick my neck out on the campaign choppin’ block I think my political platform would have to be “a lobster in every pot, a mojito in each hand, a three day paid weekend every weekend and affordable beach house living for all.” And please, you don’t have to use the lead on me ‘cause I’ll take the silver.

It leads to more honest communications. 4. It reduces complaints about low pay. 5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover. 6. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear. 7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter. 8. It encourages carpooling. 9. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don’t care. 10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.

Dad-isms...

Dadisms are dad’s favourite lines said in typical style and tone to teach us basics of life. • You’re gonna like it, whether you like it or not! • Hey, did you hear me talking to you? • “Here I taught you everything I know and you still don’t know nothing!” • If I didn’t love you so much I wouldn’t punish you... I would let you do whatever you wanted. • A little pain never hurt anybody. • If ifs and buts were candy and nuts then we’d all have a merry Christmas. • If you’re gonna be dumb, you’ve gotta be tough. • Worrying about things you can’t change is like a rocking chair... it gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere. • We’re not lost. I’m just not sure where we are. • I don’t care what other people are doing! I’m not everybody else’s father! • I’ll tell you why. Because I said so. That’s why. • Hurt much? I didn’t feel a thing. • Don’t worry. It’s only blood. • So you think you’re smart, do you? • What’s so funny? Wipe that smile off your face.

Hey Charlotte Harbor Parrotheads, what tiiiiiime is it? It’s time to start planning for our 3rd Birthday Party over Labor Day weekend. Though not totally finalized (as of this writing) we do know that the host hotel will again be the Holiday Inn Express. Call 941-764-0056 for reservations and look for upcoming e-mails about this “don’t miss” event. There will be great music, food, drinks, pool

like yours truly needed those Go to www. finsup.com and click on the “photos” link to see hundreds of pictures. And though I know there were lots of helpers, here’s a big team

party, Nav-a-gator afternoon, and the shuttle will be back again this year so no drinking and driving!! All right, let’s start with a concert by some guy named Jimmy Buffett. Held on 4/24, the five local clubs came together for one grand tailgate party. There was a big top tent with the musicians and DJ Albert underneath, and a midway of all kinds of games and giveaways. There was a huge raffle with a one kick ass prize donated per club. There was a meet & greet with four of the Coral Reefers and lots & lots of food and drinks. Thanks, Matt, for all the margaritas…

At our meeting on 5/11 we had the pleasure of Tall Paul and his pal Quincy, with special guest John Patti, the hottest man in Trop Rock (well, according to yours truly, anyway). Fig Newton put on a Flower Power theme and winners of the contest were Ron Richards, Gail Phillips and Doris Trabant. Way to go! We also collected lots of cans, pop-tops, pill bottles and items to send over to the troops. A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who took time at the meeting to help out and to the folks who get the collected items to their final destination. Lastly, the new Harbor Lady out of Fisherman’s Village gave the club members a free cruise on 4/29. I heard nothing but good things, and the captain told us that parrotheads can cruise free with their club badge (not valid on all cruises). Call 941-639-0969 for more details being sure to mention CHPHC. OK, that’s it for now. Our website is www. chphc.com. If you want to join this crazy club you can print out an app and mail it or join us at the next meeting, the second Tuesday of the month at the Coral Rock Tiki Bar (NE corner of Kings Hwy & US41). Some folks start getting there around 5:30 - the “official stuff” starts around 6:30. And remember, “Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been”. Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau Keeping Cool in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands this Summer Jennifer Huber Some say the kiss of Florida summer humidity is good for the skin. I say it’s bad for my hair. Rather than fight the warm temperatures and sticky days of Southwest Florida, summer is ideal for checking out cool things to do in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands. Following is a sampling of activities to check out over the next few months. Tag a Tarpon. Hire a fishing guide to catch one of the world’s most challenging game fish, the tarpon. And get this, the best place in the world for tarpon fishing is right here in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands. How do we know? Because Sport Fishing magazine recently named Boca Grande the number one place for tarpon fishing. Cheer on the Boys of Summer. Catch affordable baseball action when spending an evening at the Charlotte Sports Park with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. As a bonus, shake the hand (or is it a paw or claw?) of a United States Senate candidate, Stoney, the team’s mascot! (For those not in the

Walk on the Artsy Side. Summer evenings are ideal for enjoying tropical breezes and the second Saturday of the month in Englewood is the place to be. Between 6 and 9 p.m., historic Dearborn Street is the location for Saturday Night Live where galleries and shops stay open a little later and music pours onto the streets. There are plenty of restaurants to enjoy a cool adult beverage and grab a bite. It’s a great opportunity to check out the beautiful

art benches along Dearborn Street which were recently installed.

know, Stoney announced his run for the Senate as an Independent candidate in April.)

The third Thursday of the month is Punta Gorda’s Gallery Walk with live entertainment on the streets of downtown and boutiques and galleries stay open a little later with some offering tasty bites and refreshing beverages. Shallow Water Wading Trips. Grab a dip net and bucket and wear clothing that can get wet when joining the good folks of the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (CHEC) for a free shallow water wading adventure in Lemon Bay. The marine environment serves as the nursery for a host of sea life such as seahorses, sea stars and tulip shells, just to name a few. Participants gather up the critters then a naturalist reviews what was found in a show, tell and touch format. While wading is refreshing, don’t forget the sunscreen.

and celebrate independence with a swim across the Peace River alongside hundreds of other patriotic aqua babies. The event begins at 9 a.m. from the southbound U.S. 41 bridge and swimmers will cross 1.5 miles to Fishermen’s Village. This isn’t a race but a leisure swim (or float) across the brackish water where fishermen have pulled black tip sharks. There are no rules (except for common sense), no registration and no one in charge. As to how far you’d like to express your freedom, that’s between you and the fish. ECOnomical Summer Escape. Troy Allan came from humble roots in the farmlands of Illinois. “Out there in the cornfields, there anin’t much to do, and everything’s so far away... Being a kid, I didn’t have a vehicle, so I begged and begged for a guitar, and it became my best friend”. Troy spent many hours with his newfound friend emulating many of his idols, “Back then, Willie and Waylon were on the radio, so all I did was sit and learn how to play all their songs”. In the early 80’s, Troy reluctantly moved to Beaumont, Texas with his mother. Although he missed his childhood home, it wasn’t long before he realized the move had opened up a whole new world of possibilities. The Texas music scene was ripe and infused with new talent, and established icons, that are now considered legends in the industry. Musicians flocked to the area to be part of it. “Up there (in Illinois), there wasn’t a single sole anywhere around that played any kind of instrument, I was on my own. Down here (in Texas), you couldn’t turn around in a convenience store without bumping into a drummer, or a base player, or somebody… I was in heaven!” It didn’t take long before Troy had embraced the Texas music scene and lifestyle. Troy picked up with the Classic Rock scene in the 80’s. “I was really into Van Halen. That’s when I started writing songs… But the funny thing was, all my songs were coming out Country. Even when I was playing Classic Rock, all my songs sounded Country. I should have know then that’s where I should be…” Throughout the 90’s he migrated to playing a mix of Country, with some Classic Rock tossed in to shake it up a bit… In 2005, Troy became the bass player for Hanna’s Reef, a “Trop Rock” band with a Texas Coastal Sound. “Once I got into the band, I thought this is pretty cool… And the people are just so incredible! They’re so, so, different than Country... I’ve found that people in Country, I’ll say, liked to listen to music… In the Trop Rock genre, now those people are fanatics! It’s everything all about the music! You could be the rodie, and be treated like a star!” “One thing lead to another, and things started coming out more tropical. I started playing my own songs on break, and people kept asking me for a copy or a CD. I didn’t have any money for that. Then finally in 2007 somebody approached me and said they had a plan. That they’d show me how to get a CD made… We took acoustic versions of

Page 18

An Interview With Troy Allan my songs, and recorded it as a presale. Then went ahead and sold 400 copies at $20! I took that money turned around and went into the studio and put together a full-blown CD ‘Just South of Corpus’…” Troy has already enjoyed much success with this first studio CD release. At the 2008 Texas Music Awards he finished Top 5 Finalist for Male Vocalist, and Song of the Year for his Title Track. It seems that Trop Rockers and Parrotheads have truly embraced Troy, and his music. More evidence of Troy’s acceptance to the Trop Rock scene, was evident when www.MargaritaMafia.com, a website dedicated to the Trop Rock genre, allowed Troy to use their name for the title of one of his songs. Then liked it so much, they appropriately made it the background music on their website. Things really seemed to be humming right along nicely in Troy’s world. He found a great band, with some awesome fans; his own stuff was being well received, and the day job as the Lottery Sales Representative for Beaumont, TX was knocking down some big bucks… Well maybe not like winning the lottery, but it was paying the bills… Life was good! Until the day that would change his life forever… June 16th 2009, after an ownership change and some cutbacks, Troy was let go from his day job he had held with the lottery for many years. “I’d been so busy between my solo stuff, booking with the band, family stuff, and then working 50hrs a week, I said ‘well now that I have the time, I might as well use the insurance that I’ve never used, before it runs out at the end of the month. I’m going to get checked out’…” “Believe it or not, they came back and found that I was the ‘healthiest person they had ever seen’. My Dr. was kidding around like ‘Get out of my office and come back when you have a runny nose or a cold or something’… So,

June 2010

on my way home, I stopped to do some shopping and decided to buy a Slotsky Personal Pan Pizza to celebrate. I started woofin’ this pizza down cause it was so good… But, I began to get a sharp pain in my sternum… I didn’t pay much attention to it; I just kept cramming this pizza in… The more I did, the more I hurt. I finally made it to the house and crawled in the living room where I passed out… That’s all I remember till next morning… I called my Dr. back first thing and said ‘Dr. you might see me as the healthiest person in the world, but we’ve got a major problem here’…”

Before the end of the month, Troy would learn he had the early stages of the most aggressive and deadly types of cancer there is, Linitis Plastica… Troy would find that there are no symptoms with this form of stomach cancer, except the restriction of the stomach entryway, which Troy aggravated by packing in too much pizza, too fast. “It was like pushing a golf ball through a garden hose”… On January 19th of this year, Troy had his stomach and lymph nodes removed. He is now on his 4th round of chemo, and won’t be done till July. He admits it’s tough staying focused and motivated while going through treatment, but Troy continues to tour and do gigs. “The toughest part is traveling, and being hooked up to the pump. I’m walking on the airplane with this battery-operated machine all hooked up to me with wires... I

The Parrot

have to show all kinds of documentation to board the flight. It’s a lot of extra work. I also schedule my shows so I have a few days between to relax, polish the bike, and take a little vacation”... It was the fear of the treatment, more than the disease itself that really unsettled Troy. “When they told me about the cancer it was blah, blah, blah… I thought that’s crap. I’m going to beat this, I won’t event loose an eyelash. I was right on both accounts... It wasn’t the cancer so much as the chemo and radiation. That is what scared me”… So, he went online and found all kinds of information about the cancer, but couldn’t find any real good explanation of what to expect from the treatment. He wanted to know what it was like, not only for himself, but also to explain it to his family who couldn’t be there with him. He also wanted to show them what he was going through during the processes of receiving his treatments… His father-in-law followed him throughout the entire process with a camcorder. Then posted the segments on YouTube. “The videos became all about cancer awareness, what chemo is, what the machines are, and how simple it is. I had my nurses go through and explain it… Kind of like this is what you are going to go though, but it’s not bad… That took off pretty huge!” Then last fall while still touring with the band, Troy had an epiphany on the way to a gig in Key West. “I kept having this nagging feeling that I was missing something, like I left the stove on, or did I forget to turn off the water or something???” While contemplating this notion, spanning one of the Key’s miles of bridges as the sun was setting, it suddenly hit him, “I felt like there was a tap on my shoulder, and a whisper in my ear telling me to ‘quit Hanna’s Reef and do a nationwide tour telling people about this cancer you have’... “ “I didn’t want to quit the band, I’ve never really been on my own doing a tour. So I wrestled with it for about a month... Then on December 22nd I went over to the band

leader Jerry’s house and told him this is what I need to do… It was kind of a cheerful breakup for me. I love being with the guys but this is what I needed to be doing... He was so helpful, and helped me get booked at some places he’s played at to get me going…”

literally from all over the country, to donate their time for this benefit… You want to talk about humbling, I never knew so many people knew who I was, and then all a sudden wham, they’re coming out of the woodwork to help with this benefit.”

“I have this song called ‘I Can’ which is a song I wrote for my real Dad when he had lung cancer. It was an inspirational piece; I didn’t want to make him cry I wanted to make it motivational. When I put it on TV it just turned into this wonderful huge thing, bigger than I could ever have imagined. Then people started gravitating toward it… I started singing it, especially now that I have cancer. It’s become my anthem…”

To attend this event, you must make a reservation. Tickets are just $25. Contact Shelly at 239-222-4384 for registration information, or get the form online at: www. beachfrontradio.com, check under the BeachBum tab and click Troy’s Benefit info and downloadable form are there.

Troy’s strength and conviction are evident in his message. “I’m telling people ‘Here I am, I just got done playing two hours for ya. I never missed a note, and never missed a chord, and you don’t even know that I’m going through chemotherapy right now!’ Then I roll my fanny pack around and show them where it goes into my chest and they’re just blown away... You can do anything you want to do on chemotherapy now, it doesn’t tie you down, and it’s not a death sentence anymore… Then I play them the ‘I Can” song, and the message really hits home”. That’s the message on all Troy’s t-shirts, coolies and other merchandising. “I am all about the ‘I Can Survive Cancer’ program, bringing cancer awareness to everyone”. “Now, what’s happening with the Parrotheads?!? That’s kind of a funny thing… Ya know, life puts you in the right place, whether you know your supposed to be there, or not... I get in with the band, playing for all these ‘fundraisers’ for all kinds of charities… Then I find out I have cancer, and the next thing you know they’re all putting together fundraisers for me!” Troy then explained how he had just received the latest bill (one of many in the last six months) for the cost of just the room alone, in the amount of $88,000. That’s after the insurance had covered their part. “I’ve been trying to pay as they go. I have insurance, but it doesn’t pay the full amount… So I end up getting what’s left… It’s crazy what’s left… So now all these Parrothead groups are putting benefits together for me, and this one (Carnival of Life) is really turning into a huge one!” Troy Allan will be appearing locally at the Carnival of Life for his benefit, at Laishley Park Marina, in Punta Gorda, Florida on June 5th, 2010. Music starts at Noon and lasts till 8pm! “There’s 25 artists coming in,

More info on the Margaritaville Beach Hotel The Gulf Breeze News has an article with more details on the Margaritaville Beach Hotel that will is scheduled to open in Pensacola Beach in June: “Buffett, hotel deal rock Hess’ world” Marilyn Hess feels as if she won the lottery. As head of Little Sabine, Inc., she was finalizing the details to open a Gulf-front hotel on Pensacola Beach, replacing the Holiday Inn that Hurricane Ivan washed away in 2004 … But now the real work begins. To meet the target opening in mid to late June for the Margaritaville Beach Hotel, workers are retrofitting the kitchen to accommodate “Frank and Lola’s” restaurant inside the hotel so it can serve signature Margaritaville Café dishes such as the “cheeseburger in paradise.” A pool bar is being constructed as well as an outdoor bar and entertainment area tentatively named “Land Shark Landing.” The Margaritaville Café is scheduled to open on a parcel adjacent to the hotel in Spring of 2011. “Frank and Lola’s” is a reference to the 1982 Buffett song about a couple on their second honeymoon in Pensacola, a reference most fans will recognize. Room rates will range from $195 to $450 per night depending on the season and accommodations. Margaritaville Beach Hotel will offer meeting space, a board room and a spectacular view of the Gulf of Mexico through massive glass windows. “It will have the most beautiful bar area you can imagine,” Hess said. Reservations will be taken at www.margaritavillehotel.com within a few days, and it is expected to be a hit, especially with the national press the venture is getting

Backstage with Buffett in Houston Most concert tickets insist “No photography or recording devices allowed.” A Jimmy Buffett concert is different. For the past 10 years, Buffett has been broadcasting every one of his concerts live and complete on his own Radio Margaritaville station. And this year, he’s been streaming video, from the opening song through his second encore, on the Internet, including that afternoon’s sound check and rehearsal. “We’ve been streaming every concert live, for free, for 10 or 11 years now on our radio station. This year, we started putting live video on ustream.com. I don’t know of any other artist who would even consider doing this,” said Coleman Sisson, Woodlands resident and general manager of Radio Margaritaville on Sirius radio and www.margaritaville. com. Before the show, the mood backstage was calm. Band members talked with friends, relatives and local big shots. Peter Mayer gave away guitar picks to children. Mac MacAnally, who stands next to Buffett onstage and sings Alan Jackson’s part on It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere, said, “I don’t know, but for some reason, this is a really good time and place for the band. Things are real happy. The ball just keeps rolling.” Buffett and others honor Michael Douglas Jimmy Buffett performed for Michael Douglas as he collected a Chaplin Award at the Alice Tully Hall

Lincoln Centre. A special music performance will be provided by singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, a longtime friend of Douglas, who also performed at the actor’s wedding to Catherine Zeta Jones

An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who Shared offices with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the receptionist’s desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler. He gave her his name. In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, “YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?” All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man. He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, ’NO, I’VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX

Peace River Clean-up The Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club is organizing a Peace River Clean-Up on June 5 & 6 2010. They are now supported by the Navigator Boat Club, Mosaic Co, and the Nav-A-Gator Grill and are looking for other organizations and individuals that would like to add their support. 8 canoes and/or kayaks are being donated to the Parrot Head Club by the Nav-A-Gator Grill for use during the clean-up. “Your”Chamber By John Wright

“Your” Chamber of Commerce in Punta Gorda In recent days, we welcomed a new business to Punta Gorda that really underscored what the Chamber and the entire city has been striving towards for many years now. When Michael Saunders & Company selected our city to open up a new real estate office in a period when many real estate offices are closing, we were both thrilled and curious as to why we have been honored. So we invited the founder and namesake of the company to address a recent Chamber meeting to get our answers. Michael spoke of the early beginnings of her own empire and how she started out with a vision, a strategic plan and a list of values to which she and her firm would strictly adhere. She then pointed out that that is exactly what Punta Gorda has also done over the last five years and that our vision was clearly visible for all to see. A reborn city has emerged and one that Michael Saunders recognizes as being a success story. Her sense of familiarity and warmth and friendliness of the people is clear to understand. By winning her heart, we have been rewarded with the desired result – a new business that will attract even more businesses to realize their own Punta Gorda dreams. As Punta Gorda strengthens and maintains its steady growth, we will hopefully be an added benefit to surrounding areas. It’s amazing to see how our own Chamber has grown so rapidly in the last few years and how, in breaking through the 1000 member barrier, we have achieved a second place standing across the State of Florida for sustained membership growth – something else we can all be very proud of. Pride in our community is something instantly noticeable to visitors to our city. In the streets, locals will regale their stories of what to see and where to go. We have an abundance of special events and promotions every single week that can easily match Mount Dora as a destination. We offer a sincerity and charm to match Savannah and

we have year-round perfect weather to equal anywhere in Florida, so pleased feel welcome to our hidden treasure of a city! On Saturday, June 26th, the Chamber is presenting our 4th Annual Charlotte County Appreciation Day (at the Rays - Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg). The Chamber has negotiated four specially priced packages for you, ranging from VIP Club Seats at $155 to lower-level outfield tickets at $22. Tickets are now available for purchase on a firstcome-first-serve basis in our online payment center of our website www. puntagordachamber.com Tickets will be mailed out to you on the next business

day (time permitting) or can be collected from our office, conveniently located in downtown Punta Gorda at the corner of Marion Avenue and Sullivan Street. For additional information on these tickets, please call us on 941 639 3720 during regular office hours. You will require your own transportation to St. Petersburg, but, at the time of going to print, we are investigating the possibility of laying on a coach from Punta Gorda as well, as a small extra charge. On June 5th, please support the ABWA Golf Tournament with your hole sign sponsorship, foursome, door prizes, and goodie bag give-a-ways. All proceeds benefit residents of Charlotte County. All are invited to participate in the

Flooding is not covered by normal home-owners insurance. You can protect your home and its contents from flood loss through the National Flood Insurance Program. Charlotte County Flood History Hurricanes and Tropical Storms are the greatest source of flooding in Charlotte County. Coastal areas of Charlotte County have been exposed to more than 50 hurricanes / tropical storms since 1886. Since October, 1959, 17 of these weather events impacted the county population. Tropical storms in September 2001, October 1996, November 1988, June 1992, and Hurricane Elena in August 1985 were sources of multiple insurance claims for flood damage suffered in Charlotte County.

Road Trip: Ybor City Ybor City: Music, Music, Music! Ybor City has music to fit anyone’s taste. Our eldest daughter Nicole was visiting from NorCal (as opposed to SoCal) a couple of week’s ago and we took her to see one of her favorite groups from her college days, Sister Hazel. We had a wonderful time, the music was great, the Ritz was packed with 30/40-somethings and the “refreshments” were flowing. This band from “hog town” still has it! Last week, “M” and I went to the Ybor City Rotary Club’s Café Con Leche, their Annual Gala. The Ritz had been transformed from a concert hall to an up-scale dining and dancing establishment, due in large part to the hard work of Kristen Fuente and her Gala Committee.

The Black & White theme was I was very pleased to see all of carried-out with style and flair and our 8th Avenue live-music venues Steve the Mainstream Band had folks of participating this year! all-ages rock’n to the music of the Blues Brothers, Aretha Franklin and the Temptations (can’t beat My Girl for a slow dance). If one band on one stage is not enough to keep you entertained, how about 46 bands on 8 Stages? Last Saturday night, Tropical Heatwave brought to Ybor City the most hippies I have seen since my college days. The music at the Cuban Club and the El Pasaje Plaza was outstanding. I took a real liking to Ruthie Foster who mixed a lot of blues with a little bit of gospel – Amen sister!

The Parrot Spring Your Business Into Action Advertise In The Parrot

opened at New World Brewery with the Jim Morey Band – a mix of jazz, swing and ragtime. Twice we cruised by Orpheum, but they always had a line (never been much for lines). Tom at Crowbar was ecstatic to have a full-house from Heatwave down at his place to hear Peter Baldwin doing some incredible scat-singing. If you’re looking for “live music” Ybor is the place to be. Strolling La Setima you can hear authentic Cuban music streaming from the cigar bars, blues emanating from the Blue Shark, jazz coming from Gook Luck Café and alternative rock wafting out the doors of JJ’s Café & Bar. – Tom Keating

Hey Tampa Bay Parrotheads, what tiiiiiiiime is it? It’s time to welcome in summer, and unfortunately, hurricane season. Let’s hope we won’t have to go “Surfing in a hurricane”. Let’s start with unfinished business. We had a great time at Whiskey Joe’s on 4/23 for our last preconcert party, raising $160 in a 50/50 raffle. After all is said and done we raised well over $1000 for Save the Manatee Club with the proceeds from all our pre-concert events. The tailgate party on 4/24, which included all five local parrothead clubs, was phenomenal. Great job, everyone! I heard rumors that perhaps $1000 was raised for Florida Parrot Rescue. Oh yeah, and the Buffett concert was pretty good, too. Hey, yours truly will go to concerts all day long for $36! Read more in the CHPHC article.

Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise Club Written by Charlotte Lanier aka Charlie Rose Dude! As the picture shows, he had a good time. We also collected items for Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary to help if any animals get oil coated, and with only a couple days notice before the meeting our great club still managed to donate one cage, a case of paper towels, three huge bags of towels and sheets, and three large boxes of Dawn, bandages and rubber gloves. Nice job, folks! Let’s just hope BP gets their shit together and maybe they won’t have to use it…or at least not on our coast. Don’t forget the Palm Harbor Streetfest on June 5th, the raft up on the 26th & our 5th Wed mtg on 6/26 at Rapscallions. Also, thanks go out to Dorothy for writing the April article for me while I was on the Atlanta PHCruise, during which we raised $60,000 for Breast Cancer Research. Yay us!! On a more somber note, our good friend Joe(y) Bukowski unexpected passed away in February. He was at the regular

meeting on a Wed night and died Thursday morning. He loved being a parrothead and loved doing the beach clean ups. We had one two days later and his wife Karen, their daughter Amanda and her family actually came to that clean up so we had a nice little ceremony for him, putting a flower wreath in the water off Parrothead Island, then a celebration of life the following Wednesday. At the concert on 4/24 Buffett closed with “Tin Cup Chalice” so a few of us sang it Joe(y)’s way; “With a tin cup for a chalice, fill it up with CHEAP red wine”...Sail on dude. We miss ya! That’s it for now. In the meantime you need to join us at our next Parrothead meeting. You can find us at Gasoline Alley (on 66th St N in Clearwater, just north of Ulmerton) on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Check out our website at www.finsup.com for more details about the club or any of our upcoming events (click on the “Events” surfboard and go to the month in which you need info). Beating, and Enjoying, The Heat in Tampa Bay To all you sunbathers, fishermen, outdoor enthusiasts and just general sunshine lovers…welcome to paradise! This is the time of year that each and every Floridian looks forward to – SUMMER!

So, in honor of having the Sunshine State’s biggest asset back (and in full force), we are going to give you some great ways to get out, get some color back, and enjoy the Rays (and we aren’t talking about the first place Tampa Bay Rays).

for a romantic evening. It’s at Second Avenue & Bayshore Drive on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront, and with even more transportation options to get you to the pier, it’s easier than ever to get

out and enjoy it. Visit www. stpetepier.com to get the full scoop.

Or, if white sand and huge shade umbrellas aren’t your thing, you can still get out and enjoy Tampa Bay’s great outdoors! Three scenic rivers, the Alafia, Hillsborough, and First, you need to actually get the Little Manatee, with tidal out to the beaches. Of course, inlets leading out to open bay we have some of the best water will provide endless beaches in the world here in Tampa Bay, so take your pick. But, make sure you do visit one of the area’s most recognized waterfront landmarks - The Pier in St. Pete.

enjoyment for everyone. Try a canoe trip, wildlife included, with Alligator Bob’s Ecotours or Canoe Escape. Or get out in to the Bay, and away from the white sand, with a boat charter service. Whether you are looking to cruise the Bay or do some fishing, inshore or offshore, there’s an option for you. Or if you feel like enjoy the water from the sidewalk, we have options for you as well. One of Tampa’s newest treasures, City Bike Tampa, has your bicycle tuned up and ready to ride. But it’s not just bicycles; you can rent baby seats, trailers, Trail-A-Bikes, longboards with big sticks, jogging strollers and kayaks. So as you can see, they have something for everyone. Plus, they offer scenic tours, history tours, weekly group rides, parts, accessories and service. I’ve personally been on one of their tours, and did a private ride as well, and it’s one of the best ways to enjoy Tampa’s urban core! They are located in downtown Tampa, so head over to http://citybiketampa. com to get more details.

There’s plenty that’s new to enjoy, including a dramatic LED lights display, a concierge service to answer all of your frequently asked questions, Pier Aquarium Summer Marine Adventures, promotion and tour packages, and much more. And you can even enjoy sit-down, waterfront restaurants with the family or

And let’s not forget one of the true pastimes of Tampa Bay – GOLF! With about a hundred golf courses in the area, your choices of where to play are pretty wide open (unlike some of the fairways)! From

Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club and Saddlebrook Resort to Emerald Greens Golf Resort and Country Club and TPC Tampa Bay, and everything in between, there is a course to fit every skill level, and budget, out there. Believe me, if I can get out there and play, anyone can! These are just a few of the amazing summertime experiences that are awaiting you in Tampa Bay. There are deals out there to be had and enjoy, so visit www. VisitTampaBay.com to see some of those deals. And while you are there, surf the site a little bit to really get your summer experience started. Until next time, start planning on ways to beat the heat this summer.
