Buying a green home Aspect The way a house is positioned on a block of land will also play a role in how much energy it consumes. For example, if the longest part of the house faces the afternoon summer sun, this could boost energy costs in cooling your new home. If you’ve found an otherwise perfect house, this issue can be mitigated by planting deciduous trees around affected areas that will block sunlight over summer, but allow it through over winter. Solar power A grid connected solar power system is a great feature, but even if the home doesn’t have solar power, as long as it has the right aspect and sufficient roof space for solar panels; one can be added later. Renewable energy rebates are making solar power systems so much more affordable these days. However, if you are considering adding solar power at a later point, if you are in the northern hemisphere there should be sufficient roof space with an unshaded southerly aspect and in the southern hemisphere, a north facing roof is best. Also check to see when rebate programs expire, so you know if you’ll have enough time to benefit. Unfortunately though, governments often quote an intended end date, but the program finishes sooner due to popularity. Construction materials and carpets Some houses are constructed with materials that make them toxic or present future potential health hazards. For example, older homes may have asbestos present in roofing material. While it’s not such a problem while it is in good repair, once work needs to be done on it, or it needs to be removed, it can get quite expensive due to special processes required and disposal of the waste. New carpeting, depending on its type, may be off-gassing formaldehyde (a carcinogen). Formaldehyde may also be present in high levels due to glues, particle board and other plastics. Formaldehyde can be hard to avoid in modern homes, but some are worse than others.

Page 6

by The Greener Cleaner

Rain water harvesting The supply of water is another energy intense aspect of modern living. With climate change also shifting rainfall patterns, there’s no way to be sure if an area that receives high rainfall historically won’t face a water crunch in the future. The presence of rain barrels or large rainwater tanks can help provide you with some water security, plus lessen the strain on mains infrastructure. Lawns and garden A large lawn can be pleasing to the eye, but it’s usually a bear to maintain. Lawns are energy and resource suckers, requiring regular mowing (time, emissions and noise), watering and weeding. When considering buying a green home, ensure the garden and lawn is local climate compatible and is constructed in a way to keep the need for maintenance and the application of chemicals such as weed killers to a minimum. Small lawn areas, mulch, native plants are all positive indicators that some thought has been put into this aspect. If there is a lawn area and you don’t yet have a mower, consider buying an emissions-free alternative; a reel mower. Making money from your green home I mentioned earlier in the article that there is a way to generate income from a green home. Here’s how - feed in tariffs. Feed in tariff programs are in place in many parts of the world. It’s where owners of grid connected solar power systems are paid a premium rate for all the electricity produced by their system - and it’s usually far higher than the going market rate.

July 2010

An important thing to determine aside from the availability of a feed in tariff is to establish what kind of program it is. They usually come in one of two flavors - net and gross. A gross feed in tariff pays you the premium rate for every single kilowatt your system generates. A net feed in tariff only pays for electricity exported to the mains grid that is surplus to your own consumption. In most cases, a gross feed in tariff is far more financially beneficial Buying a green home doesn’t just help lighten your housing related environmental impact; it’s a sound investment too!

Shiver me timbers! Thar real

pirates in them thar Florida Keys! And while they’re not nearly as good lookin’ as Capt. Jack Sparrow, the pirate population is indeed alive and thriving… An encroaching squall thwarted my Sunday morning snorkel trip to the Hens and Chickens Reef and sent me fleeing for shelter. Through the fierce downpour and white thunderbolts, I managed to spot a small dock in the distance. Carefully weaving my ‘66 Boston Whaler through the watery graveyard of sunken vessels, I quickly tied off at the rickety pier.

A wild pig trail through a shore of mangroves led me to a den of honest-to-God real live pirates. I paused briefly and ask myself if I should continue into their lair, when a bolt of lightning answered the question for me. Trying not to show fear, my wobbly legs walked me back into a bygone area. Crusty ol’ saltwater hooligans bellied up at the bar acted as if I were invisible…throwin’ back mugs of grog and up to their gunwales in shenanigans. As

Page 8

“That’s all you got! You must be kidding me! I mean that’s not very pirate-like at all!”

ON THE RUM: THE PIRATE CHRONICLE

By Mayor Gonzo Mays

“Mama’s, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” blasted from the jukebox, I grabbed a low profile stool at the end of the bar and hailed the brew master. “Whatever they’re having!” I barked (trying to be cool) tossing my head towards the scurvy dogs across the way. And that’s when I spotted Ol’ Cap’n One Eye: a patch-less, one-eyed pirate huddled alone in a dim-lit corner. Two ales later, using my peripheral vision, I found myself studying the anti-social behavior of the one-eyed pirate. Weirdly enough I felt sorry for the ugly guy - figuring he must be some kind of lonely misfit pirate in dire need of some attention. I mean who in their right mind would go out in public with a cloudy, oozing, dripping eyeball hanging from its socket, unless of course, he be the real deal - the real McCoy! Face it you’d have to be a real pirate not to give a damn…right? Right! So at the bottom of the third ale I thought I’d converse with Ol’ Cap’n One Eye. In my buzzed state his oozing eyeball seemed like a good a conversation opener as any, so I said, “What happened to your eye and why the hell don‘t you cover that thing up?” Call me crazy but the damn

July 2010

eyeball was so hideous that I felt it needed to be addressed for everyone’s sake…but on second thought maybe not! The other pirates broke into a collective gasp and then fell silent. It was the first time all morning that the posse

The frog-strangling rain passed and for the first time Ol’ One Eye cracked a smile - but not at me. He and the rest of the pirates turned to pay homage to an extralarge broad-shouldered man coming through the door. It be the fearless self-proclaimed NFL “Has Been” and two-time Super Bowl Champ Gary Dunn - the owner of the pirate’s treasured safe-haven: the Ocean View Inn and Sports Pub at Mile Marker 84.5 located on Windley Key in Islamorada [aisle-a-more-ah-dah] better known as the small drinkin’ village with a big fishin’ problem. The O.V. is steeped in pirate history and was once a haven for smugglers and pirates. To this day it’s still a favorite haunt of modern day pirates and Mayor Gonzo. Why it even holds the very first liquor license ever issued in the American Caribbean and that alone is good enough for me!

of pirates took notice to me. All eyes were fixed on Ol’ Cap’n One Eye waiting to see if he would respond. I was sort of hopin’ that he wouldn’t. Ol’ One Eye took a gulp of his grog, slammed down the empty mug and let out a belch rivaling Homer Simpson. Beer foam clung to his wiry handle bar moustache and a menacing curled lip appeared from under his Z Z Top-like beard which gave him an even more sinister look. I kind of smiled but quickly realized the cute girl routine wasn’t gonna work. “Nobody asks me about my eye!” he bellowed pausing to signal another round. Seemed like a good time as any to sneak out the back way but One Eye stopped me in my tracks. “You really want to know what happened to my eye?” he growled. “Well, yeah,” I said, “Now that you ask.” “I was petting my cat and stuck my finger in my eye and it got infected.” Huh? “That’s it?!? I exclaimed,

So let me raise a mug o’ grog to my chum Gary Dunn, Ol’ Cap’n One Eye and the rest of the pirates throughout Key West and the Florida Keys…

“Here’s to it. Down to it. Here’s to the man who can’t do it. He should be tied to it. Made to do it. Drag his nose through it. Lead me to it. I can do it. I’m use to it!”

money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small , so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him. 5. DID I SAY THAT??? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo)! 8. THE GRAND FINALE!!! Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high des-

ert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they put it into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer! Social Security Sex Two men were talking. “So, how’s your sex life?” “Oh, nothing special. I’m having Social Security sex.” “Social Security sex?” “Yeah, you know; I get a little each month, but not enough to live on!”

Twisted Humor Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after crossing into the United States , wandering aimlessly and starving. They are about to just lie down and wait for death, when all of a sudden Luis says.........”Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell. Ees bacon, I theenk.” “Si, Luis, eet sure smells like bacon. “ With renewed hope they struggle up the next sand dune, & there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon. There’s raw bacon, there’s fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon ... every imaginable kind of cured pork. “Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved. Ees a bacon tree.” “Luis, maybe ees a meerage? We ees in the desert don’t forget.” “Pepe, since when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smell like bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree.” And with that, Luis staggers towards the tree. He gets to within 5 metres, Pepe crawling close behind, when suddenly a machine gun opens up, and Luis drops like a wet sock. Mortally wounded, he warns Pepe with his dying breath, “Pepe... go back man, you was right, ees not a bacon tree!” “Luis, Luis mi amigo... what ees it? “ “Pepe.. ees not a bacon tree. Ees Ees Ees Ees Ees a ham bush....”

An atheist was walking through the woods. “What majestic trees!” “What powerful rivers!” “What beautiful animals!” He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charging towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, “Oh my God!” Time Stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist, and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?” The atheist looked directly into the light and said, “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a CHRISTIAN?”

Written by Charlotte Lanier aka Charlie Rose 4th of July Cookout

This is *not* the best way to avoid getting caught by the police for illegal fireworks. One year, Johnny’s family was having an “extended family” 4th of July cookout at their home. One of the special treats that year was the lighting of the fireworks (Roman candles, bottle rockets, missile batteries, etc.) that they had bought out of state (they’re illegal in Johnny’s home state). Just before they were to arrive, a cousin called, saying their neighbor’s plans had just fallen through, and could they bring them along to the picnic—they even had extra food to bring. “Sure, the more the merrier!” Upon arrival and meeting of their cousin’s neighbor, it is discovered that he’s a police officer. The father turns as innocently as he can to Johnny, and whispers to him to grab the paper bag of fireworks sitting in the kitchen and hide them somewhere quickly. Johnny disappears, and the father changes the topic to food for the day. This family had brought some chicken to grill, so the father tells them the gas grill is all set to use out back - just turn on the gas and push the ignition button with the lid still closed. They head out to the back as Johnny comes back in through the front door. The father hurries to him and says “Whew, that was close! That man’s a police officer, and he almost saw the fireworks. Did you hide them really well?” Johnny replied, “Yes, Dad, nobody will ever think to look in the grill!”

Oh, prior to this meeting there was a 2 day clean up on June 5th & 6th at the Peace River and 36 Parrotheads came out to support the Nav-a-gator and Mosaic in their efforts. Thanks to each one of you for getting off your butts and doing something for the club. I know not everyone can attend every function, but this wasn’t even a 10% turnout (we have 450 or so members). Sad! Ok, yours truly will get off her soapbox now.

If you couldn’t do the clean up, how about some comedy while you eat and drink? The club is inviting you to attend the show at Visani’s on July 28th for $10, with all proceeds benefiting our BDParty. Please contact Tracy at 941-380-7969 to purchase tickets. OK, that’s it for now. Our website is www. chphc.com. If you want to join this crazy club you can print out an app and mail it or join us at the next meeting, the second Tuesday of the month at the Coral Rock Tiki Bar (NE corner of Kings Hwy & US41). Some folks start getting there around 5:30 - the “official stuff” starts around 6:30. And remember, “Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been”. Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau Unspoiled Shorelines of Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands Key, there remains mixed in among the untold number of shells a plethora of fossilized shark’s teeth, attesting to the fact that the Gulf of Mexico is as ancient and mysterious as ever. Take a stroll along a nature trail ideal for wildlife viewing and seeing native plants such as indigo berry and bay cedar.

Jennifer A. Huber Without a doubt, summer is here and like most residents, I have a love of our beautiful beaches. Unfortunately that darn Deepwater Horizon oil spill out in the Gulf of Mexico is influencing people’s decisions on where to spend their summer vacations. At publication time, we are fortunate there is no physical evidence of oil on our beaches but we are seeing an intangible impact of the spill in the way of reduced accommodation and attraction bookings, reduced call volume, and some summer vacation cancelations. While this means more parking spaces available at area beaches, it means fewer people are spending their money and supporting jobs in the community. This is not a good thing.

Englewood Beach

Charlotte County businesses and residents to do the same: • Currently, there is no local impact from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; • Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands is open for business and the shoreline and beaches are beautiful and ready for enjoyment; • We do not know if our area will be affected, but it is in no imminent danger. The Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau is utilizing Twitter (@chgiflorida) and Facebook to update visitors on the status of beaches. We encourage residents and visitors to share their real-time beach photos on our Facebook page www.facebook. com/CharlotteHarbor and VISIT FLORIDA’s www.FloridaLive. com website. This provides the opportunity to show potential visitors our waters and beaches are beautiful and ready for their arrival. Beachy Keen! So what’s your beach personality? With 28 miles of beaches, Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands offers access to pristine stretches of sand, sun and surf. The

beaches hold a cache of natural treasures and while all beaches welcome everyone, here are some recommendations in several favorite categories: Romantic Beach – Englewood Beach on Manasota Key Enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby, and then watch the sun melt away into the Gulf of Mexico for a romantic evening. Daytime brings sandier pursuits as the wide shorelines of Englewood Beach are perfect for building sandcastles, bird watching, or simply strolling hand-in-hand along the Gulf. Family Beach - Port Charlotte Beach Port Charlotte Beach Park boasts both harbor-side and beach-side fun. Families and athletes love its heated swimming pool, basketball, tennis, beach volleyball, bocce, horseshoe courts and playground. There are picnic shelters, a fishing pier, as well as access ramps for boating, canoeing and kayaking.

Island Beach – Don Pedro Island State Park Accessible only by boat, Don Pedro Island, one of Charlotte Harbor’s barrier islands and state park, is the ultimate Florida escape. There are plenty of shells and few people to compete for them! Although far removed from civilization, Don Pedro Island State Park still boasts modern-day amenities including restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic pavilions, and barbecue grills. Unlike what some reporters, journalists, and/or correspondents may do when putting together a story on an exciting new business in the area that is catching the eye of so many people and talk about only the things that the business is doing and has to offer. I have had the pleasure of not only visiting one of those new and exciting businesses, but in the process, have had the pleasure of meeting one of the most dynamic, energetic and resilient business owners on the planet! Therefore, I would like to introduce to you Nancy Kelly, the proud owner of the Key West Casino in Port Charlotte, FL and the Key West Casino Too in the Historic Downtown District of Punta Gorda, FL, first and then I’ll get to the casinos! As you read further, I hope that you’ll understand why I have chosen to and hopefully you are happy

that I did! Nancy Kelly has lived a life that many could only dream of! As I sat and listened in “awe” with her recently, I had the feeling that I was speaking with a movie star! Nancy is a beautiful, sharp and very compassionate 75 years young business woman here in Southwest Florida that has overcome death, the removal of one lung and two ‘bouts with throat cancer. She has unfortunately had the love of her life pass away, “Dougie” as she refers to her late husband, and the passing of her son too. But through it all, she loves to reminisce on all of the good times, all of the great people that she has met over the years and looks forward to being able to provide places of entertainment for individuals like herself, to be able to escape their day-to-day lives, and do so without having to spend a lot of money doing so! So how did Nancy comeup with the idea of opening casinos on the West Coast of Florida and how did she gain the business know-how of doing so? Nancy’s life in Florida began when she

Page 18

had graduated from college, got married to “Dougie” at the age of 20 and moved from Chicago, Illinois to Miami in 1955. “Dougie” had been the Maître d’ at the famous nightclub in New York City, The Copa. Upon moving to Miami, he then became the Maître d’ at the world-renowned Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach. Being the Maître d’ created life-long relationships for him and Nancy with the likes of the late Frank Sinatra, or “Mr. S.” as Nancy refers to him, who was a special friend and even had “Dougie” perform in some of his movies, one of which, was the movie, “A Hole In The Head.” “Dougie’s” best friend, was the late Joe E. “Joey” Lewis, singer and later comedian that performed in Nancy’s private club that she opened on Miami Beach in 1976, the “Top Draw.” They had the pleasure of meeting Elvis Presley at the Fontainebleau when he first got out of the service and says that he was such a nice and polite young man, someone that you’d want your own son to be like! Nancy would go and see him every time he was at the Fontainebleau! She met Elizabeth Taylor and to this day can’t get over how purple her eyes were, she had never met anyone with purple eyes. “The whites of her eyes were violet…you’d just sit and stare at her…oh, she was gorgeous” says Nancy. Not only did she open her private club the “Top Draw” on Miami Beach in 1976 that could seat 750 people, had the “Rat Pack” visit all the time and even had a “Joe E. Lewis Room,” she then opened “Disco 79” in 1979 right across the street from it that sported six bars, 25,000 sq/ft and had the “first disco wedding on

July 2010

roller-skates” that NBC came down to cover in 1979. She also opened a Canadian Style Bar-B-Que Restaurant out on 163rd Street in Miami that catered to the barbeque style of the local population, which were mostly of Canadian descent. Now there’s a little business know-how! For the idea to start the casinos here on the West Coast of Florida, that came after the passing of “Dougie” and her son and her operations. In 1980, her and “Dougie” had purchased 68 acres in Naples, away from the fast-paced world of Miami, where they had a beautiful house and over the years filled the acreage with over 500 animals that were a passion and source of relaxation for Nancy. Her big dream for the property was to have a lot of animals and create a petting zoo for children! The animals ranged from a water buffalo that could be rode, to pigmy monkeys all the way to fenec foxes! Unfortunately after her surgeries, her physician told her that due to the her reactions to animal dander,

which I can relate to personally, and the related physical stress of the day-to-day up-keep of the ranch and the animals that she loved so much, that it would be best for her and her daughter to part with the animals. This was a very hard thing for Nancy to do, especially since

The Parrot

Nancy Kelly, An American Original by Michael Vasher by that time, her daughter and the ranch were all that she had to keep from dwelling on the fact that her “Dougie” and son were both no longer with her. But she did what was in her and the animals’ best interest and sold off a large portion of the ranch to, as she refers to him, “The Vitamin Guru,” Gary Null. It was a little later on,

that her physician and his wife took Nancy on a trip to Palm Beach, where they took her to and likewise exposed her to the “casino business!” They went to four or five locations while visiting Palm Beach on that trip and that is when Nancy found her new way of not only staying busy, but being able to provide a means for those like herself, to meet new people and share stories with, and provide a means of entertainment for those individuals who couldn’t afford the country clubs back in the Naples area or weren’t able to play golf or tennis any longer because of their age. Against her physician’s and daughter’s recommendation not to even think about opening a high-stress business like a casino, the entrepreneurial spirit and fire in Nancy couldn’t be stopped! She opened her first casino in Bonita Springs, the Palace Games and then her second one later on in Naples, the Palace Games Too. Both had thousands of members and kept the restless Nancy Kelly busy! She sold the both of them in June of 2009 and started looking north on the Southwest

The Parrot

Coast to open yet another casino and find a place to live that wasn’t as big and busy as Naples had become over the years. That’s when she happened upon Port Charlotte and likewise found the current location of what would become, the Key West Casino! Now, I have to stop for a second, because this is the point of our conversation that I just about fell out of my chair! While Nancy is starting to get things ready in Port Charlotte, she got very ill and had to be admitted to the hospital in July 2009, where the last thing she remembers hearing across the P.A. system is “code blue” and miraculously comes back from the dead, to say the least, then beats and recovers from, after 45-days of shots and antibiotics, “Mercer” which she caught while in the hospital and a chemical burn on her hand. Now most individuals at that point would say, “All right, it’s time to just take it easy for now on.” Nope! Not for the driven Nancy Kelly! She managed, through it all, to open the Key West Casino located at 24430 Sandhill Blvd in Port Charlotte on October 1st, 2009. WOW! The Key West Casino is the only one of two casinos in the area with a full-kitchen with a State License, so that whether it’s the free lunch or dinner you take advantage of having served at your machine, it is fresh and not just ordered-in and set on a counter for who knows how long before you have a bite. She also keeps bowls of Little Debbie’s treats and baskets with snacks around the casino to snack on and doesn’t allow the use of cellphones or smoking inside of the casino. It’s just you and others who you may strike-up a conversation with and become friends with and the ringing of casino machines as folks win jackpots! Now, Nancy just didn’t stop with the Key West Casino, shortly after opening it, she looked into a suitable location for a casino in the Historic Downtown District of Punta Gorda and landed on a portion of the building at 502 King Street that The Loft Restaurant and Bar also resides in. There, as of one month ago, she opened the Key West Casino Too! Between the two locations and less than a year in business between the two of them, she already has thousands of members, with many from the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda areas, but many coming in from areas like Venice, Arcadia, Englewood and even as far south as Fort Myers! How and why would folks travel such a distance? I won’t expose all of Nancy’s casino business secrets, but one thing she does, is she keeps her different games and contests beyond the machines ever-changing and fresh! One example would be her monthly raffle contest that she has at both locations, were one lucky winner from each location receives a chauffeured limousine ride to and

July 2010

from the casino to the Visani’s Comedy Club and Dinner Theatre, where they are treated to a dinner and comedy act for the night! The real neat part of that night out, is that you are driven in a limousine that was owned by the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas that Nancy just recently purchased! Her machines aren’t like the typical slot machines one may think of from Vegas, they look similar, however they have games on them that individuals play to win jackpots from, that per Florida Law, are awarded in the form of gift cards to local merchants and restaurants. And even though you can bet as much as you choose to, you don’t have to have a lot of money to have fun, since the majority of her machines are penny or nickel machines! She also has “Progressive” slot machines that are connected to a statewide network of other casino machines that payout a $250 jackpot five times a day and a larger jackpot once a day. The largest jackpot that one of

her patrons won from the progressive machines was $5,600! She also keeps her locations staffed with friendly and courteous individuals that are on-hand to make sure you are having a great time, one thing that is a must have for Nancy, and they are open 24 hours a day! For the rest of the really neat things that Nancy has going on at her locations, like bingo every hour, a no cost contest and live music to name a few things, you’ll have to get on out and see for yourself! Even though there are a lot of gift cards handed out monthly to lucky winners, the real prize at these two businesses is Nancy Kelly! If you’re lucky enough to have a chat with her like I did and like she does with so many customers, you’ll know why! P.S. Be sure to ask her about her “The Joker Is Wild” ring!

Margaritaville Hotel coming to Pensacola Beach FL Jimmy Buffett’s mythical Margaritaville is about to become a reality on Pensacola Beach. The legendary singer-songwriter has reached an agreement with Pensacola developer Marilyn Woodbury-Hess to launch the first Margaritaville Beach Hotel in a $50 million, 162-room Gulf-front hotel expected to open in late May or early June. Buffett’s Orlando-based development partner, Jim Wiseman, announced the deal during the Santa Rosa Island Authority’s regular board meeting Wednesday evening. Wiseman said the decision to launch the hotel brand in Pensacola was the result of three weeks of rapid-fire meetings he and Buffett held with Woodbury-Hess’ Little Sabine Inc., developers of the property owned by American Fidelity Life Insurance Co. “Up until three weeks ago, our plans were to locate the first Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Hollywood, Fla.,” Wiseman told Island Authority members. “It’s really providential how this all came about. It was meant to be at Pensacola Beach.” Wiseman noted that Buffett, a Mobile native, “grew up on Pensacola Beach” and his strong affinity for the area factored heavily into the decision to locate the first hotel there. The Northwest Florida Daily News. Boston Globe Interview with Buffett Q. You have the public image of a free-for-all party guy and surfer, but weren’t you just down in Haiti helping out earthquake victims? And you’re going down to the Gulf Coast to lend a hand; what are your thoughts on the oil spill? A. You have to figure out what to do instead of just bitching about it. One thing is that we have partnered with a little boat company and we’re building these small skimmer boats that can go into shallow water and actually help with the cleanup. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast, I don’t do this for headlines, but just because I want to give back. . . . We’re about to open our [Margaritaville Hotel] in Pen-

Page 22

sacola Beach, which is right at ground zero. We had a job fair there for 40 jobs — and 1,000 people showed up. Q. You also just put out the double-CD “Encores,’’ taken from the acoustic encores you’ve done the last two years. It gave you a way to revisit some of your more obscure tunes and to show your roots by covering songs by Jesse Winchester, John Prine, and Bob Dylan. A. On tour we have a 17-piece band that works people into a frenzy, but as big as this thing has gotten, I never want to forget being a folk singer, because that’s what I grew out of. I want to keep the roots alive of just me and a guitar since I spent so many years doing that. By ending the shows that way feels like a nightcap. It feels good. Q. One of the songs is Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,’’ pulled from your Newport Folk Festival appearance a couple of years ago. Would you play Newport again? A. Yes, I loved it. I loved the surroundings. I would do it again. Q. Any other recording projects? A. Twenty years ago I ran away to Tahiti and wrote the song “One Particular Harbor.’’ I went back to Tahiti not long ago and did an acoustic version of the whole “One Particular Harbor’’ album in a bar called Bloody Mary’s where I first played — it fits about 80 people. So we’ll put that out. by Steve Morse

This month I want to introduce you to a real dynamic duo, Beau & Becca Davis. I caught them at Lock and Key Restaurant one fine Friday evening in the middle of June. As I arrived, Beau’s gentle voice coupled with the sweet sound of Becca singing some Patsy Cline, were radiating throughout the patio, cutting through the warm evening breezes that blew off the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to this fantastic venue, Beau & Becca play at many fabulous waterfront watering holes throughout the Englewood/ Cape Haze area including; Waterside Grill in Placida, Stump Pass Grille in Grove City, Eagle Grill on Boca Grande, as well as many others…

Featured Band By Jack Gray

right at me and said, ‘I’m going on break’, pushed the microphone out of the way and goes ‘Who the hell are you???’ That was it, end of story… That was 4 years ago…” Beau & Becca stay pretty busy. “We’ve been blessed, we’re busy doing 4-5 gigs a week now”. They are also available for special

Beau & Becca

I first met Becca when she was singing with the band Vertigo a few years back. I remember how her radiance was so captivating, and her smile warm and inviting. She is just as captivating today… Then about a year later, when she joined up with Beau, they made a cameo appearance together during a Parrot Party at Leverock’s Seafood House in Placida and just blew everyone away… I’ve wanted to catch their full set ever since. So, I was so happy to finally do it this month, and take some time to get to know a little more about them… Besides entertaining in the evenings, Beau is a boat captain for Captain Jack’s Charters in Englewood, and a licensed contractor. Becca is a full time student, and a full time musician too. Between them, there is over 40 years of combined music and entertainment experience. Their performance is uplifting, entertaining, and I guarantee sometime during the evening, you will catch yourself offering spontaneous “Wow’s” as you admire the talent that these two artists have put together. Becca is from Ohio. Two weeks after graduating HS, she move away and spent some time in Southern Alabama, and Germany before coming to this tropical paradise we call home… Beau, on the other hand, is an original Florida Cracker. “I was born here in Venice. My whole family was born here, Dad in Englewood, and my Mom in Punta Gorda. My Grandparents were either born in the Keys, Gainesville, or Coco Beach. We’re 5 - 6 generations of Floridians here.” Beau has been playing music and has been on the road practically all his life. “I’ve opened for just about all my heroes; Waylon Jennings, Willey Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, you name it”. Beau broke into the business after winning the Colgate County Showdown. “Soon as I won that contest I was working constantly. That’s what catapulted me, and at least kept me making a living at it”. Besides touring, Beau played in Las Vegas 14 wks a year for 12-13 years. “I turned 44 and I was done. That’s when I decided to come back home to Englewood”. It’s been a little over six years since he decided leave life on the road and settle down some... Beau’s family members were some of the original inhabitants in this area. His whole

The Parrot

family still lives here. “One of my uncles started Englewood Bank, and another was the president of the Englewood Historical Society for at least 10 years…I wanted to be home! Of all the places I’ve lived, (as he pauses to acknowledges the crowd who has assembled to view the sunset and listen them play), I liked all of this the most!” Becca met Beau on a “girls night out” with local Women’s Outlook Publisher Dianna Donalon. “After begging me for weeks, I finally broke down and we went out to Jam’s Restaurant in Placida, now Trattoria’s Restaurant, for a few martini’s. Beau was playing that night. After his break, he came back on and said, ‘Hell, I’m bored who wants to come up and sing with me???’ I raised my hand, and said, ’I’ll come on up’!”

events and private parties. They play mostly covers form artists like; Sugarland, Sarah Evans, Faith Hill, Fleetwood Mac, and they’ll even toss in some Hank Williams Jr., and a little Janice Joplin now and then for us rowdy folks! Oh, and of course, you’d be Crazy to miss Becca’s rendition of Patsy Cline… “We do have a few original songs. Beau has some fun tunes that he’ll do in the last set. Beau also has a serious song that he wrote about 7-8 years ago One of These Days that was never recorded”. You can find out more about Beau & Becca Davis, check their schedule, and view some pictures online at: www.BeaunBeccaD.com.

“He asked what I wanted to sing? From listening to his set, I knew he was into country, so I said, ‘how about Patsy Cline?’ He replied, ‘anything but that’… (He explained) It wasn’t that he doesn’t like her, or that he doesn’t know any of her music, it’s just that every women who has ever come up to sing with him wants to sing Patsy Cline!” Reluctantly though, he settled on I Fall To Pieces, but a slower, acoustic version… Becca has been singing with a full band, so she was thinking to herself ‘this might be a little awkward’, but when Beau started playing she picked it right up and they fit together perfectly. “When the chorus came in, he started harmonizing with me, and our harmonies just blended! So, we’re both looking at eachother like yeah that was good… When the song was over, he’s there with the microphone in front of his face. He looked

“Your”Chamber By John Wright

“Your” Chamber of Commerce in Punta Gorda I just returned from my annual trip to Europe and, being away, really does give you the time to reflect on just how far Punta Gorda as a city has come and the direction it is surely taking for even more future sustained growth. I am convinced that the recent decisions taken by Florida Gulf Coast University to open up an academic center in the heart of Punta Gorda can only lead to even bigger and brighter things for us in the city. With FGCU’s commitment to commence classes in the downtown Herald Court Centre in the fall of this year, we can look forward to growth and opportunity for the entire community. This is a first step to the development of a full-blown university right in our back door. If Punta Gorda can prove its viability to FGCU’s management as a cost-effective, academicf r i e n d l y location, we can look forward to more attention and more opportunity coming from these humble beginnings. To coincide with the openings of FGCU’s new facility, the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce is introducing the inception of its very own entrepreneurial academy, in conjunction with the City of Punta Gorda and our sponsors. What is an Entrepreneurial Academy, I hear you shout! Well, in a nutshell, it is a fast-track training program for future business owners to develop their business ideas and learn very quickly how to develop their initial ideas into a workable business plan that will lead to the opening of your doors as a Punta Gorda business owner. It is a plan to teach you all the fundamental basics of business management and to eliminate as many pitfalls as possible to allow you to succeed with your business ideas. Starting in October (date to be confirmed), the class of 2010 will meet.

Page 26

But in the interim, over the summer months, we are starting the recruitment of applicants for the academy. If you have a business idea and long to start working for yourself, please feel free to contact us on 941-6393720 and we’ll get you the simple application forms for the academy, which will be reviewed by a vetting panel and processed as to the veritable opportunity that your idea presents. The cost of the new businessowner training is vastly reduced thanks to the City of Punta Gorda’s, the Chamber’s and our many member sponsors financial support. The total cost to applicants is a mere $150. It is estimated that the

training that you will receive during the course of the academy would value in excess of $5000! What a bargain! You will get the opportunity to interface with lawyers, accountants, payroll specialists, investment specialists, mentors and many more people – plus, with graduation you’ll receive a free sixmonth Chamber membership to get you on the right track. So, now’s the time to get your creative juices flowing and to get in touch with us to get you started on the path to independence! Taking “independence” leads straight into our plans for Punta Gorda’s

July 4th celebrations, which are well underway. We invite everyone to enjoy the fun at Laishley Park Punta Gorda, where “it’s happening on the harbor”. Full details of the day’s festivities are available on www. puntagordafireworks. com It’s been almost a year since thousands of people filled Laishley Park to continue Punta Gorda’s long-standing tradition of old-fashioned family fun and fireworks on the Fourth of July. For 2010, Smuggler’s Enterprises, Inc. has partnered with Florida Weekly, Grande Aire Services, Pinnacle Employee Leasing and the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce to bring you 4th Fest 2010! This year’s event features K-9 dog demonstrations courtesy of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Punta Gorda Police Department, FREE kids area with face painters and clowns, food, cold beer, and an awesome Fourth of July fireworks display shot right off the Laishley Pier. We are expecting a great and full day, so make Punta Gorda part of your plans for this holiday! As always, Punta Gorda is a great place to plan a day out, a weekend just relaxing or a lifetime of tranquility and quality of life. A full list of our events is available in our online calendar of events on www.puntagordachamber.com Remember to click the link from our homepage to our weekly e-news bulletin – the Friday Facts. A drunk was staggering down the main street of town. Somehow he managed to make it up the stairs to the cathedral and into the building, where he crashed from pew to pew, finally making his way to a side aisle and into a confessional. A priest had been observing the man’s sorry progress and figuring that the fellow was in need of some assistance, proceeded to enter his side of the confessional. But his attention was rewarded only by a lengthy silence. Finally he asked, “May I help you, my son?” “I dunno....” came the drunk’s voice from behind the partition. “You got any toilet paper on your side?” An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who Shared offices with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the receptionist’s desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler. He gave her his name. In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, “YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?” All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man. He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, ’NO, I’VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON’T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS.’

Historical Humor for 4th July

Some Amusing, Funny and Thought Provoking Quotations of Benjamin Franklin [1705-1790] In the great tradition of American humor, the title of “First American Humorist” rightfully belongs to Benjamin Franklin. He was the beginning of a long line of writers who created a uniquely American form of humor filled with clever wit, folksy wisdom, and a generous portion of irreverence. In his Poor Richard’s Almanac, Franklin wrote many clever sayings which are still part of our culture today. At 26, Franklin published the first edition of Poor Richard’s Almanac under the pseudonym Richard Saunders. • Remember that time is money. • A little neglect may breed mischief: for want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for want of a horse the rider was lost. • A penny saved is a penny earned. • Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do. • Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. • Fish and visitors smell in 3 days. • Genius without education is like silver in the mine. • God helps them that help themselves. • Haste makes waste. • Hide not your talents. They for use were made. What’s a sundial in the shade? • It is hard for an empty bag to stand upright. • Little strokes fell great oaks. • Never leave that till to-morrow which you can do to-day. • Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead. • Well done is better than well said. • In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. • There never was a good war nor a bad peace.

Hey Tampa Bay Parrotheads, what tiiiiiiiime is it? It’s time for a busy summer. There is a beach clean up on 7/10… meet in the parking lot of the Rusty Pelican around 9:30. The after party is at Quaker Steak and Lube (yum-mee!!). Be sure you RSVP to TBPHevents@verizon.net if you plan on attending the Ichetucknee Tubing Trip on 7/23 & 24 or the Shark Tooth Hunt on 7/30 & 31. These are both fun, CHEAP little weekend get-aways. There is also a bar stroll being planned for Saturday, 8/21 and there is a raft up planned for Saturday, 8/28 so listen up at the meetings or check the events calendar on the website for more details as they are finalized. Our meeting on 6/2 was a good one, with lots of reminiscing of past events. We held our Pig Roast on 5/15 at Kahuna’s and raised money for Tampa Bay Watch. The raffle itself took in $300, with 12 Volt Man Jerry winning the grand prize bar mirror, and the cookbooks Pheeding the Phlock we have been selling have netted over $700, so with these numbers and proceeds from Kahuna’s we will be sending them a check for way over $1000. Very nice! And a big thanks to Flip Flop Dave and Tropical Brain Freeze for the great music and to Jimmy and the Kahuna’s staff for a great night.

Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise Club Written by Charlotte Lanier aka Charlie Rose on material, I’d like to thank Mark & Sharon Leverett for hosting all the fabulous house concerts at “The Yard”. We finally got Jack Mosley in the tiki hut on 6/13 and it was a great time. He played all the songs from the new CD Headin’ South and then left on a two week tour heading north. Don’t worry, he’ll be back.

Lots of pholks headed out to Tropicana Field for tailgating and the Rays game on 5/29. Yours truly wasn’t able to attend but I heard a great time was had by all. They won 8-5, and if one recalls correctly they have never lost a game during Parrothead night. Hmmm. Maybe they should invite us to more games?? Lots of pholks also headed up to Palm Harbor on June 5th for the Parrothead Street Festival. Hot, hot, hot!! And that describes

the day, the food and the music! They again had the Caribbean Chillers as the main entertainment. Love that band. Speaking of great music, and since I’m short

That’s it for now. In the meantime you need to join us at our next Parrothead meeting. Create Sparks in Tampa Bay for the Fourth of July For our loyal readers, this is not your first Fourth of July in Tampa Bay, and I’m sure it won’t be your last. And for our first time readers (at least if it’s your first July with us), then there are some really cool events in store, all of which will ignite some sparks of entertainment for you.

free admission to the Tampa Bay History Center and more. Channelside Bay Plaza will also be hosting live music, fun and food. To cap things off, there will be a twentyminute long fireworks display launched from a barge in the Garrison Channel, which begins at 9pm, so be there!

display, a craft show, children’s activities, and of course plenty of food and drink options. The gates open at 4pm, entertainment begins at 7:30pm, and the fireworks start at 9:30pm. Looking for more information, just call 727-5624700! And let me end this brief recap with a brand new event the weekend after the Fourth. Sail Tampa Bay will be arriving in Tampa from July 10-14, bringing the area’s rich maritime history to life. Some of the most impressive international Sailing Ships of the World will arrive in Tampa Bay, including the Capitan Miranda from Uruguay, the Eagle from the United States of America, and the Gloria from Colombia.

Let me start by saying Tampa Bay knows how to celebrate one of the United States’ most beloved holidays – the Fourth of July! From bodacious BBQs and celebrations to amazing firework exhibitions, the entire area stretches the imaginations of onlookers each and every year with tons of excitement. Now, there are tons of things to do, so we’ll hit a couple of the highlights for you –

The celebration begins with a spectacular “Parade of Sail” as the ships enter the Port of Tampa with thousands of spectators lining the shoreline. The five-day festival will feature live music and dockside tours of the ships, which will be located at the Tampa Convention Center and Channelside. Just head over to www.SailTampaBay2010. com for more info.

We’ll kick this off with an annual event that Tampa Bay residents look forward to each and every year. It’s the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration in downtown Tampa. The Tampa Attractions Association will be hosting this for the ninth time, and invites everyone to experience the excitement with a front row view of the spectacular fireworks from Channelside Bay Plaza, The Florida Aquarium, American Victory Ship, Yacht Starship, Cotanchobee Park, the Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina, Harbor Island, the St. Pete Times Forum, and Bayshore Boulevard.

And there’s plenty more to do for the 4th of July and throughout the summer in Tampa Bay. Stay tuned here each month as we bring you more updates on what to do and where to do it, or you can head over to www.VisitTampaBay.com to get the scoop on the latest and greatest Tampa Bay area events.

And there’ll be plenty to do, including $10 admission to the Florida Aquarium after 3pm, Family Funfest and Dragon Boat races aboard the American Victory Ship,

Page 34

Next, we’ll head across the bridge for Clearwater Celebrates America, the city’s annual Independence Day celebration, which takes place in Coachman Park. The festival is free and will feature the Mostly Pops Orchestra (with John and Mary K. Wilson), an amazing fireworks
